Camp Hoover General Program Descriptions

Resident Camp General Programs are designed for girls entering Grades: 1-12 and provide a broad camp experience, with varied activities and waterfront time daily. These programs are great if you want to experience all that Camp Hoover has to offer.

A Little Camp Fun

Sessions: July 14–16; Aug 4–6 Cost: $210 Entering Grades: 1–3 Badge: B Outdoor Adventurer

Arrive at camp on Thursday morning and enjoy a sampler of activities including swimming, boating, arts and crafts, games, hiking and more! A first camp experience in a nutshell.

Mini Camp

Sessions: July 10–13, July 31–Aug 3, Aug 14–17 Cost: $380 Entering Grades: 2–5

Badge: B Outdoor Adventurer This three-night experience is for a firsttime camper, or for someone who wants a shorter stay at Camp Hoover. Daily waterfront fun, hiking, arts and crafts, a picnic lunch and more will keep the campers busy during their stay. Please note: Campers must be picked up at camp at the end of the camp’s session on Wednesday afternoon.

Grand Tour

Sessions: 1, 3, 5, 6 Cost: $575 Entering Grades: 2–6 Badge: J Camper

Sample all that Camp Hoover has to offer! Try the Ropes Course, archery, a pond study, swimming, boating, hiking Hoover’s hills, cooking out, and arts and crafts. Learn about the world around you and how to take care of the environment. Whether you’re a newcomer to Hoover or an experienced camper, Grand Tour is perfect for you! Resident Camp Specialty Programs are designed for girls entering Grades: 3-12. Activities are grouped according to program, age and interest level. Part of your day will be spent with your unit swimming, boating, participating in arts and crafts, hiking and more! The remainder of your day will be spent on your specialty program choice.

Silly Science

Sessions 2, 5 Cost $575 Badge B Home Scientist, B Math in Nature 1: Shapes in Nature

Science can be super fun in the outdoors! Come experiment as you make your own silly putty, launch rockets, build a spider web with symmetry, explore tessellations in nature and explode soda! This is sure to be a fun-filled week exploring science!

Entering Grades 2–6

Wet and Wild

Sessions 2, 4 Cost $575

Enjoy a world of water fun! Water balloon volleyball, a splash contest, water aerobics and more! Spend each day swimming, boating, funyaking, exploring the lake, and learning about water safety. Discover the mysteries of Swartswood Lake - what wildlife is present and how to help maintain a healthy lake.

Hoover Who Dunnit?

Sessions 2, 3 Cost $575 Badge J Detective

Intrigue and mystery - unearth the mystery at camp? Lead the investigation by searching for clues, unraveling the codes, interviewing suspects, and more! Learn Morse code, finger printing and visit with a law enforcement personnel!

Excursions

Sessions 3, 5 Cost $575 Badge B Hiker, J Geocacher

Take day trips outside of Camp Hoover exploring waterfalls, taking hikes, and discovering the beauty of Northern New Jersey. Visit Franklin Mineral Mines, Pequest Fish Hatchery, and our local state parks. Back at camp go on a geocaching scavenger hunt, and explore Camp Hoover.

Survivor Girl

Sessions 2, 6 Cost $625 Badge B Outdoor Adventurer J Eco Camper

Learn how to survive in the outdoors— orienteering, knife safety, emergency signals, and hiking. Learn how to survive on edible plants and a sleep out in a tent you pitched yourself.

Forest Friends

Sessions 1, 3 Cost $575 Badge J Math in Nature 1: Shapes in Nature

Explore nature with a math twist at Camp Hoover. Learn to identify the common flowers, trees, birds, and insects in Northern New Jersey. Use your new knowledge to identify symmetry and fractals in nature too. Take part in an international biodiversity survey, create nature-based art projects, go mothing, check out bugs, go on a biology scavenger hunt, learn about animal tracks.

Session 5 Cost $650 Badge J Playing the Past

Here’s your chance to live like a true pioneer. Learn to make butter, bake bread, cookout, dip candles, make natural dyes, prepare homemade apple cider, work on pioneer crafts, participate in archery and enjoy a day trip to the Sussex County Farm and Horse Show.

Outdoor Odyssey

Session 5 Cost $625 Badge J Trail Adventure

Practice your hiking and canoeing skills while enjoying Hoover’s general program including the challenge course and archery. Plan and participate in a one-day hiking trip at the Delaware Water Gap and a oneday trip canoeing on the Delaware River.

S’mores and Outdoors

Sessions 1, 4 Cost $575 Badge J Simple Meals

Spend your days exploring various outdoor and campy desserts! From s’mores to banana boats to campfire cookies you will learn the basics of outdoor cooking and have fun creating and decorating in an outdoorsy theme. Perfect your fire building skills, practice leave no trace and decorate your own cake to share with others!

Entering Grades 4–10

Creation Studio

Sessions 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 Cost $575

Recognize your full artistic potential! Try something new or expand your existing talents! Activities include painting, leatherwork, weaving, dipping candles, tiedye, jewelry making and more.

Gymnastics

Sessions 1, 3 Cost $575

Cartwheel into camp! Gymnastics instruction is for all skill levels and includes practice in tumbling, dance, balance beam, vault, and floor exercises. You’ll have a chance to showcase your newly-acquired skills in an end-of-the-week performance! Experienced counselors will instruct at each level.

Sessions 1, 2, 5 Cost $900 Badge J Horseback Ricing

Progress at your own pace as you spend three hours each day at nearby Spring Valley Farms riding and learning about tack. Ride Western saddle in the outdoor and indoor rings and enjoy a special trail ride. Spend time learning more about horses and horse care.

Pajama Drama

Sessions 2, 4, 6 Cost $575 Badge J Horseback Ricing

Develop your theatrical skills. Work on group drama activities, design costumes and scenery, and hone your acting skills. Put your skills to the test while performing for your camp friends in an end-of-theweek performance!

Entering Grades 6–8

Beach Party

Session 1 Cost $575

Sun and fun on the lake! Spend your days swimming, paddle boarding and relaxing on the lake. Learn basic water rescue skills and spend the majority of the day at the Hoover waterfront.

Build It

Session 5 Cost $625 Badge C Woodworker

Use your engineering skills to build a bridge and see how much weight it can hold. Be creative as you craft your own nail art by hammering your own design into a wooden plank and finally build and decorate your own bird house.

Saddles, Paddles, and Arrows

Sessions 3, 4, 6 Cost $700

Spend the week enjoying archery, canoeing and riding horses. Learn the fundamentals of canoeing and take a day trip around Swartswood Lake. Take a trip to the stables to spend time with the horses and go on a trail ride for one day. Spend time at the archery range working on scoring a bullseye.

Session 4 Cost $625 Badge C Eating for Beauty

Come to camp to relax and get away from it all. Start your day with yoga, learn about aromatherapy, make your own bath and beauty products like sugar scrubs, cleansing masks and fizzing bath bombs. You’ll also get to participate in group walks/jogs or spend extra time journaling, reading, hula hooping or lounging by the lake.

Entering Grades 7–10

Everynight Live

Sessions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Cost $575 Badge C Night Owl

Sleep through breakfast and wake up late. Fill the nights with: stargazing, s’mores over a campfire, twilight swim or boat, arts and crafts by moonlight, archery, games or a midnight snack. Spend your afternoons swimming, boating, playing games on the playfield, relaxing with friends and more.

Summer Getaway

Session 1 (Hike), 5 (Canoe) Cost $625

Spend two days and one night either canoeing on the Delaware River or hiking and backpacking on the Appalachian Trail. While at camp help to plan the trip, practice your camping skills, strengthen your hiking or canoeing proficiency and learn about leave no trace camping as your prepare for your adventure.

What’s Cooking?

Sessions 3, 6 Cost $550

Spend your days exploring various forms of outdoor cooking from Dutch ovens to pie irons to reflector ovens. Learn how to cook over a fire and prepare fun appetizers or a full meal to share with another unit!

Adventurer

Sessions 5, 6 Cost $1,250 Badge S Adventure Camper

Push yourself to the limit! Try rock climbing, white water rafting on the Lehigh River, challenge the high ropes course and more! Each day will be a new challenge for you and your friends.

Create IT!

Session 2, 5 Cost $625

Imagination is the thing! Your days will be spent creating using various mediums. Start the week by making and playing with clay, craft a simple pot and then make it special using paint and glaze! Paint from the waterfront dock, photograph from the top of Hoover’s Hills and create some “art”chery!

Hoover Escapades

Session 4 Cost $950

Set off on a trip to explore, see the sights and take in some of the local attractions of Northern New Jersey. Enjoy trips to Tomahawk Lake Waterpark, Tree Tops Adventure Course at Camelback, tubing on the Delaware River, and much more!

Middies

Sessions 1 and 2 (July 10–23) Cost $1,600 Badge S Paddling

Canoeing down the Delaware River can be a thrill… After a few days of canoeing and camping training at Camp Hoover (including an overnight by the lake), set out for a canoe adventure on the Delaware River. Experience magnificent scenery, physical challenge, and the rewards of teamwork. Girls participating in this trip should have previous experience canoeing. Note: Two week program, no additional stayover fee.

Session 3 Cost $700 Badge C Primitive Camper S Adventure Camper

Live primitively while learning the basics of camping including fire building and outdoor cooking methods, survival techniques, water purification and more. Spend one day rock climbing at Rick’s Rocks.

Pack and Paddle

Session 3 and 4 (July 24–Aug. 6) Cost $1600 Badge S Trailblazing

Two-week challenge! Spend your first week, canoeing, camping, preparing for your trip and taking day-long hikes in and around Camp Hoover. In the second week, spend two days hiking the Appalachian Trail and then two days canoeing down the Delaware River. Note: Two week program, no additional stayover fee.

Set Sail

Session 1, 2, 4, 5 Cost $575

Tack away and try your hands at gliding across Swartswood Lake in a Sunfish sailboat. Spend several hours each day receiving instruction from our trained staff and testing your skills on the water! Note: All campers participating in boating activities prepare by learning lifejacket and water safety, which includes a deep-water test.

Super Summer Baskets

Session 2 Cost $575

Weaving baskets, whether you are a beginner or returning weaver, is a perfect way to express yourself. Bright color reeds, cool textures, fabrics, naturals, and great designs will enhance the traditional basket styles you’ll make: market basket, ribbed melon basket, bird’s nest, & treasure basket are just a few you might make. The sky’s the limit!

What’s SUP?

Sessions 3, 6 Cost $625

Stand-up paddling boarding that’s what’s up! Spend the week practicing your paddling skills, on team-building activities, having a relay race, play tag and learn skills - all while riding a SUP. There will be plenty of time for your other favorite camp activities as well!

Counselor in Training (CIT) I

Sessions 3 and 4 (July 24–Aug. 6) Cost $900 Award Counselor in Training Award I

Experience camp while developing your leadership and counseling skills! Discover your own personal leadership style as you work to identify and build on the strengths that you already possess. The CIT I theme is SISTERHOOD, so be prepared to build connections, make memories, learn and laugh with your sister campers, as well as be a role model. Lead the way for younger campers and work on a service project to help improve the Hoover site. Note: Stayover fee is additional.

Counselor in Training (CIT) II

Sessions 5 and 6 (August 7–20) Cost $900 Award Counselor in Training Award II

Take your leadership and counselor skills to the next level! All girls in this program must have earned the CIT I Award. Spend the first week of your stay at Camp Hoover exploring your strengths and passions, discovering your personal values and developing activities for younger girls! Then spend a week focused on increasing your skills in a specific camp program by working with the girls in it! Note: Stayover fee is additional.
