A Message from our CEO
Welcome, Girl Scouts, to the first edition of our new quarterly newsletter - TPQ (The Promise Quarterly)! We are so pleased to introduce this new publication to you here at the beginning of an amazing new Girl Scout year!
Going forward, you'll find TPQ in your email inbox every November, February, May, and August. Chock full of timely information about everything the council, our girls, our volunteers, and our Community Partners have been up to during that quarter, TPQ will also let you know all about what's on the immediate horizon for Girl Scouts councilwide!
This quarter, we had the pleasure of hosting our first Women of Distinction event in the Lafayette-OxfordUniversity area since 2019, and we were pleased to host regional Volunteer Leadership Summit events to educate and honor our volunteers in Memphis, Jackson and Tupelo. You can find out more about all of these honorees in this edition of TPQ!
I also want to take a moment to thank our outstanding Community Partner Organizations for their continued support of Girl Scouts Heart of the South, not only for the financial support they provide but also for the hard work and dedication their staff and volunteers bring to each of their inspiring program events. We are so grateful to the wonderful staff members of ABB, AutoZone, and City of Memphis Fire Department not only for staging fun, creative, and engaging events for our girls but also for the time and talents they provide to make these events so meaningful for girls. You can learn more about our recent Community Partner Organization-sponsored events in this issue of TPQ.
And to all our supporters and to all of our amazing volunteers, thank you to each and every one of you for all the time and talents YOU bring to Girl Scouts and to our girls every day. Girl Scouts would not be Girl Scouts without the love and dedication of our volunteers. I look forward to sharing another wonderful year of Girl Scouts with you and to seeing what you and your girls do next!

On Wednesday, September 25, 2024, GSHS was proud to once again host the Women of Distinction Luncheon to honor outstanding women in the Lafayette-Oxford-University area. This year's distinguished nominees included Jenny Addy, Julia Aubrey, Laurie Beth Ellis, Suzanne Helveston, Kylie Scott, Sheritha Blackmon Williams and Meridith Wulff. The event was brilliantly emceed by longtime LOU-Area Women of Distinction committee member and former Women of Distinction nominee Katie Naron, and after an inspiring talk from keynote speaker Camie Bianco (also a former Women of Distinction nominee), Julia Aubrey was named the 2024 LOU Woman of Distinction. Associate Professor of Music at the University of Mississippi and Girl Scout alum, Julia has served as the director of the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts since 2016. During her tenure, she has worked to use the arts as a bridge between the campus and community. In 2017, she brought the Youth Music Theatre Workshop to the Ford Center. The YMTW is a project she and her husband Bob have collaborated on since 1997 to provide area children with professional quality instruction in musical theatre.
Of her Girl Scout experience, Julia said, “I can clearly recall the impact the Girl Scouts had on my personal development as a young woman. I was able to join the Girl Scouts at age 11. One of our activities was cookie sales and at that time the cost was $1 a box. I was very shy, but I was encouraged to try ‘sales’ on behalf of my troop. I gained confidence by going door-to-door and speaking to adults about our goals and aspirations as Girl Scouts. I got better and better at my presentation and ended up selling quite a few boxes! It takes courage to put oneself in front of others, but if you believe in what you are passionate about, people will listen. You may not always be successful, but it all starts with one “box” at a time. Thank you, Girl Scouts, for helping me find confidence that grew and resonated throughout my career.”
You can learn more about Julia and all of our amazing 2024 Women of Distinction Nominees by viewing the Event Program found HERE . Thank you to all of these wonderful women for their unwavering commitment to service and to their community.
This fall, Girl Scouts Heart of the South Community Partner Organizations ABB, AutoZone, and City of Memphis Fire Services sponsored outstanding program events for our girls!
On Saturday, November 16, our friends at ABB sponsored "The City She Built" where girls learned about sustainability and the role of technology in shaping ecofriendly communities by getting hands-on experience building their own smart city model (pictured above)
Our friends at AutoZone once again generously sponsored our exciting Totally Trefoil event at the Landers Center on September 14. With almost 1,000 girls in attendance, this year's Totally Trefoil expo (pictured opposite left and immediate lower right) was the best one yet! Girls got the opportunity to learn CPR, walk through an inflatable colon, ride a mechanical bull and MORE!
On September 21, our partners at City of Memphis Fire Services hosted their annual HERo Day. Over 150 girls had the opportunity to have fun and learn about the various careers within a fire department. Attendees learned first aid skills, handled powerful fire hoses, rappelled from the training tower, interacted with fire and rescue dogs and more! HERo Day (pictured opposite right) is real proof that, "If she can SEE it! She can BE it!"
Thank you to all of our Community Partners for your commitment to helping bring quality, inspiring programming to our girls!
GirlScouts Heart oftheSouth COMMUNITY TROOPS
Girl Scout Community Troops are designed to reach girls in schools and communities where traditional troops may not be available. Our goal is to provide all girls with the opportunity to experience Girl Scouting, regardless of location or other barriers. Community Troops offer a supportive space where girls can connect, learn new skills, build confidence, and grow into leaders through hands-on activities, service projects, and badge-earning opportunities.
This fall, our Girl Scout Community Troops have also been working hard on several badges that build their creativity, community awareness, and leadership skills. In September, the girls earned the Outdoor Art Maker badge, exploring nature-inspired art projects, from skies to bird songs. October brought the Citizen badge, where girls learned the value of good citizenship and even got to vote on issues that matter to them. In November, our focus is shifting to the Cookie Goal Setter badge. Girls will learn about cookie sales, set goals, and share their goals with real customers as they prepare for the 2025 Girl Scout Cookie season.
With the addition of our Mobile STEAM Lab, we've been able to bring unique and enriching STEAM experiences directly to girls in our schools and community spaces. The Mobile STEAM Lab offers an interactive approach to exploring science, technology, engineering, arts,
and math, sparking curiosity and enthusiasm in every participant. Each experience is paired with activities that align with STEAM badges, allowing the girls to earn achievements as they engage.
We're also excited to introduce SOAR - our middle school experience tailored specifically for girls in grades 6–8 - to Community Troops. SOAR combines age-appropriate activities with Girl Scouts’ renowned curriculum and is designed to build confidence, leadership, and community engagement. Key features include leadership development through student-led projects, community service opportunities, and activities focused on personal growth, such as self-awareness and goal-setting. SOAR provides a space for middle schoolers to connect, grow, and explore their potential.
Lastly, we're excited to announce a new partnership with Playhouse on the Square! Thanks to a generous donor, our schools will host a production of Freedom Train, The Story of Harriet Tubman. This powerful performance, filled with dance, music, and storytelling, will inspire and educate the girls about resilience and the human spirit.
Stay tuned for more adventures and achievements as we continue to provide enriching experiences for our Community Troop-member Girl Scouts!

Your donation empowers girls to become tomorrow’s leaders who will continue to break down barriers, close gender gaps, and step into roles of influence to shape a better future for everyone.
Give to Girl Scouts Heart of the South today and give a girl, and her community, a better tommorrow.
Women, especially women of color, are continually underrepresented in leadership positions, even though research shows when women and girls are supported, companies and countries do better financially, people are healthier, there is more creative innovation, and social welfare is improved. Investing in women and girls creates long-term social and economic benefits across generations and throughout communities. However, U.S. charitable giving to women’s and girls’ organizations represents only 1.9% of all philanthropic dollars – a percentage that has basically gone unchanged for five years. We need to do better for our girls.
You can make a difference.
By investing in Girl Scouts Heart of the South, you are helping prepare the next generation of leaders - leaders of families, companies, and communities.
Through Girl Scout activities, girls are building confidence, forming values, finding their voices, learning to overcome obstacles, exploring places and ideas, developing life skills, and working together. And the best part is they are doing it while having fun with their friends.
• Camping builds independence, confidence, and environmental appreciation.
• Earning badges inspires collaboration and the desire to learn new things.
• The Girl Scout Cookie Program teaches financial and business skills and encourages entrepreneurship.
• Planning and taking trips show girls the larger world and how to accomplish goals.
• Conducting community service teaches girls leadership and how they make the world a better place.
• Attending Girl Scout program events is an opportunity to explore interests and meet girls from different communities.
• Meeting and learning from women provides role models, supportive adults, and mentors.

Through activities in science and technology, business and economic literacy, and outdoor and environmental awareness, Girl Scouting provides girls with opportunities for fun and friendship while fostering the development of leadership skills and self-esteem.
Girl Scouts Heart of the South serves over 5,100 girls in grades K-12, and over 2,100 adults in 59 counties in West Tennessee, North Mississippi, and Crittenden County, Arkansas with 30+ dedicated full-time staff members, three camping facilities and three owned or leased leadership centers. The headquarters are located at our leadership center in Memphis, Tennessee at 825 Valleybrook Drive. Girl Scouts Heart of the South’s two other leadership centers are located in Tupelo, MS (1140 West Main Street) and Jackson, TN (1007 Old Humboldt Road).
Youth who develop these outcomes are happier, healthier, and more engaged in school, are less likely to engage in problem behaviors, are stronger job applicants, and are more likely to pursue a college education.

Girl Scouts offers girls and young women the world’s premier personal growth and leadership development experience. Programs and girl-led community service opportunities engage girls in discovering their talents, connecting with others, and taking action to make the world a better place.
In Girl Scouts, girls participate in programs that are age-appropriate, girl-driven, teach life skills, and reflect the interests and needs of today’s girls. Through enriching experiences, girls grow courageous and strong. Girl Scouts helps girls develop their full potential; relate to others with increased understanding and respect; develop values to guide their actions; and contribute to the improvement of society.
In addition to supporting and providing resources for the full complement of Girl Scout experiences such as badge earning opportunities and Girl Scout Journeys, Girl Scouts Heart of the South partners with other local businesses and organizations throughout the year to offer unique programming and events for our girls.
