2018 Summer Camps, Events, and Adventures for girls 1

A Letter from the CEO Dear GSNI Friends, Welcome to Little Book 2018! Here you will find adventures for girls who want to have fun, make new friends and learn new skills throughout the summer. Did you know that of the girls who attended Girl Scout Resident or Day Camp: • 71% improved an outdoor skill • 48% helped other girls do an outdoor activity • 71% tried an outdoor activity for the first time • Girl Scouts who spend time outdoors are twice as likely to connect with and care for the environment than non-Girl Scouts So what better reason to get outdoors this summer?! We offer a variety of camp sessions, from high adventures to family camp, resident camp to day camp. And we have lots of other exciting activities planned this year, including a Boundary Water Canoe Trip in Ely, MN, and a weekender trip to Mackinac Island, MI! Our camps are designed so girls get to experience at least one of our Four Focus Areas – Career & Interest Exploration, Travel & the Global Community, Practical Life Skills, and Outdoor Activities & Adventures. We can’t wait to see all the fun you have this summer!

Warmest Regards,

Summer 2018! What’s NEW ? • We’ve added an It’s All Relative Family Camp session at Camp Dean! •D ue to the popularity of Ponytails camp at Camp Dean, we’ve added Equestrian Camps at both Camp McCormick and Camp Far Horizons! • All resident and day camps now have weekly themes! •C amp CEO is being revamped, so keep an eye on our website for details!

Flexible Pricing Camp program opportunities for girls are subsidized, meaning the cost of providing camp programs and operating camp is greater than the fees paid to participate. Our flexible pricing system offers families the opportunity to help cover more of the true cost of the camp programs, if they are financially able. For each session, you will see three prices: • Level 1: is the most subsidized rate we can offer for camp. This covers approximately 60% of the direct costs of operating the camp program • Level 2: covers some of the direct costs associated with your camper’s experience, but is still a subsidized rate. • Level 3: is closer to the true cost of operating the camp program. It includes direct costs such as food, program supplies, living supplies, and summer staff salaries. It does not include things like building and ground maintenance. Select the fee you feel is affordable and appropriate for your family. Flexible pricing choice is always kept confidential and does not affect the quality of your child’s experience as all fees are for exactly the same program. The goal of offering flexible pricing options is to provide the highest quality programs possible to serve all community income levels and to preserve camp for generations to come. If you are requesting financial assistance, you will be requesting assistance to cover the Level 1 fee.

Camperships If you have a girl that would love to attend camp as a camper or counselor-in-training (CIT) but doesn’t have the resources to do so, we may be able to help! Families can apply for camperships by paying the initial $50 deposit for camp and submitting a campership application. Campership applications are due by April 1 and awards are granted after April 15. For more information and to apply for a campership, please visit www.girlscoutsni.org/camperships.

Bring a Friend! Is your Girl Scout thinking about coming to camp but is hesitant because she doesn’t know anyone or has not been away from home overnight? She can bring a non-Girl Scout friend! All her friend has to do is signup to be an Individually Registered Member (IRM) and she can join your Girl Scout at camp. They can even request to be in the same cabin or tent. Current non-Girl Scouts can register as IRMs by going to www.girlscoutsni.org and clicking “Girls Join!” and “Join Today.” Fill out all information and at the “Ways to Participate” screen, search the word “camp” in the Troop # field, and select “Individually Registered Member.” If the friend is outside of GSNI’s council jurisdiction, or if registration assistance is needed, please contact Customer Care at 844-476-4463 or customercare@girlscoutsni.org.

Camp Staff Are you looking for an opportunity to have fun all summer long while helping girls learn more about the outdoors? Join our fun, enthusiastic, and professional camp staff! If you or anyone you know might be interested in being part of our seasonal staff, please visit www.girlscoutsni.org/summerstaff to learn more. Staff must be 18 years old prior to the first day of training.

Camp Volunteers

We are excited to offer an innovative summer program to your family and troop! Due to the addition of added themes at all of our resident camps and transportation for field trips or special guest experts at Camp Dean, the prices of resident camp programs at Camp Dean have increased by $10 at Tier 1, $23 at Tier 2, and $30 at Tier 3 from last year’s prices. Keep in mind, if you register by May 1, you can save $25 on your camp registration!

Volunteers help us provide girls with an exceptional camp experience. Whether it’s painting new signs for the cabins, helping in the greenhouse, assisting with programming, or being a guest speaker, GSNI volunteers are critically important to the success of summer camp. Volunteer opportunities are flexible from a couple hours to a few days - you can help as little or as much as you’d like. If you would like more information about volunteering at camp, please contact us at 844-476-4463 or customercare@girlscoutsni.org, or visit us online at www.girlscoutsni. org/campvolunteer.

2018 Camp Themes NEW in 2018! All day and resident camp session (aside from Ponytails and Equestrian) activities will focus on a central theme aligned with our four focus areas. In addition to each session’s theme, girls will still have the opportunity to participate in popular camp activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, nature exploration, campfires, outdoor cooking, and more. All girls will go home with a personalized list of badge requirements she’s achieved during her time at camp!

Artistic Expressions Foster your girl’s creative side at our Artistic Expressions camp! She’ll have the opportunity to either create amazing art pieces using painting, sculpture, or drawing techniques, or she can participate in a variety of performing arts, such as acting, dancing, and music. Girls can choose to create an art gallery for display, or put on a performance the last day of camp. What a great way to wrap up a week of creativity! Guests of the campers are welcome to attend the performance and art gallery at the end of camp.

Culinary Creativity Does your camper have a taste for the culinary arts? Here is her chance to create and cook some delicious food, not only in the kitchen and on a grill, but also over a campfire. She can build her own recipes and even practice decorating pastries. After camp, she will go home and amaze her family and friends with what she can cook up. Camp never tasted so good!

Do It Yourself (D.I.Y.) D.I.Y. camp is for the Girl Scout who loves to design and create art, clothing, furniture, or animal homes with items from nature or around the house. At these camp sessions, she will have the opportunity to design, reimagine, and upcycle common materials into truly unique creations. She will even have a chance to practice wood carving and woodworking using a variety of tools! Her imagination will run wild with possibilities!

Extreme Adventures Let’s put her sense of adventure to the test! At Extreme Adventures, she will participate in high adventure activities, such as rappelling, wall climbing, orienteering and night hikes. This session also includes a canoe trip! In addition to the extreme adventures, she will have the opportunity to kick back, relax, and hang out with her friends around a campfire. Popular camp activities such as arts and crafts, nature exploration, crate stacking,* and archery* will also be offered. Additional details on camp activities will be available at online registration. *Age restrictions apply

Fantasy Frenzy Does your Girl Scout’s imagination run wild? Is she a girl that can’t get enough of Dungeons and Dragons, Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, or Alice in Wonderland? If so, she would love a week of friends, fun, and fantasy at camp! She will have a chance to create a character, build a costume, and join in on an all-camp game so fantastic that it's like nothing we've ever done before!

Globetrotters Bonjour, Ciao, Ahoj, and Hello! In today’s ever connecting world, it is even more important to become a global citizen. Your girl will expand her horizons and learn about the amazing cultures, languages, places and food from around the world. She’ll also learn about how culture affects her perceptions, views, and attitudes. She will have a wide variety of activities to choose from, including culturally-focused games, languages, stories, and cuisine.

Innovative Engineers Innovative Engineers is for the girl who loves to tinker. She will have a chance to build a crane, craft a balloon launcher, and design her own slingshot. She’ll even learn that making slime and flub are fun ways to understand chemical engineering. This camp is a perfect place for her to get started on her engineering journey. She will leave camp with a desire to engineer even bigger, better, and slimier creations! Registration will fill fast as the girls will work together to create a SeaPerch underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV)!

Nature Explorer Girls will explore the natural beauty of the land and all of its little critters, as well as discover ways to create a more sustainable environment. From hiking in the prairie to find the important milkweed butterflies need to survive, to searching for tadpoles in the pond, to starting a compost bin – this camp is all about discovering the natural world and understanding how important the environment is, not only for people, but the other living creatures above and below the soil. Girls will even have the opportunity to use our camp greenhouse to grow plants!

Night Owls Whooo's ready for a party? Girls attending Night Owls get to stay up late, eat s’mores over a bonfire, go on nighttime scavenger hunts and view the night sky. They’ll even get to play games such as volleyball and soccer in the dark. We’ll have an ample supply of glowing objects to help light up the night. As a special treat for these night owls, they can even sleep in! Girls will have a blast with their friends, all while working toward their Night Owl badge (Cadette Outdoor Journey).

Outdoor Skills This is her opportunity to participate in outdoor activities that work toward earning some of the incredible outdoor badges Girl Scouts has to offer. She will have a chance to learn about hiking, first aid, bugs, camping, letterboxing and more! As she explores nature, she will complete steps towards a take action award. She might even have a chance to start her project at camp!

Secrets of Survival (S.O.S.) Does your camper like survivor shows? Does she think she can make it on her own in the outdoors? This is her chance to put her skills to the test! She will master her outdoor skills to include , building a shelter, starting a fire, collecting drinkable water, navigating by the stars, trailblazing, and using a compass to find her way. And along with all of that, she will have the opportunity to target shoot with BB guns and learn how to use a bow and arrow and attempt a bullseye!

Water Wonderland From playing water games in the camp pool and creating a slip and slide, to finding little critters along the Rock River, this camp is a wonderland for the girl who loves water! We love water so much that we are even offering arts and crafts that are water-based such as water coloring, lava lamps and even slime! So pack her swimsuit and send her out to camp for an amazing week of water-based fun and adventure. 5

Camp Leadership Camp is a perfect opportunity to take on a leadership role and be a role model for younger girls! Girl Scouts is the premiere leadership organization for girls, and camp provides unlimited options to hone leadership skills. The Counselor-inTraining (CIT) program is a great way to learn about leadership, group dynamics, and program planning. Our CIT program is a stepping stone to develop the skills it takes to lead others or even to become a future camp counselor. Girls will be able to enjoy camp and be a mentor, teaching younger girls about how to have fun in the outdoors. The CIT program is designed so girls will participate in leadership training each day then have the opportunity to apply those skills with younger campers the same week. All interactions with younger campers will be alongside our trained camp staff. Girls can also complete more than one CIT session per summer. Activities during the CIT program will go toward earning the CIT I or CIT II award. If girls want to earn the CIT awards, they must attend and complete CIT I before CIT II. Sessions can be attended without the earning of the award.

CIT Apprentice (CITA) Girls’ Getaway

Camp Dean, Big Rock and Camp McCormick, Stillman Valley

Camp Dean, Big Rock Female adults, age 18+ Family event - must include one Girl Scout under the age of 18 (at least one adult 18+)

Is she ready to take her camp experience up a notch? Becoming a CIT Apprentice (CITA) allows her to be a camper and take a leadership role at the same time! During this overnight camp, she will take the first step in her camping career by completing the Program Aide Basic and Outdoor trainings with professional Girl Scout staff. After developing her leadership skills, she will still have time to enjoy her favorite camp activities such as hiking, making s’mores by the campfire, and swimming.

Who is your Girl Scout’s superhero? Is it a mother, grandmother, aunt, other treasured family member or friend? This getaway offers girls and their favorite female role models the opportunity to bond during a weekend at camp! We’re ready for her and female superhero to go swimming, hiking, cooking, crafting and exploring. All food and organized fun will be provided. Space is limited. Counselor-in-Training II (CIT II)

Counselor-in-Training Service Week

Camp McCormick, Stillman Valley

Camp Dean, Big Rock and Camp McCormick, Stillman Valley

She’s almost there! Now’s the time to pull together all the camp development and leadership skills she has developed over the years. At this two-week session (including the weekend of July 14-15), she will challenge herself to be the best she can be as she’s put in the spotlight to handle real life camper experiences when working with younger campers, navigate obstacles any camp counselor can encounter, and develop a specialty skill. This is excellent experience and enhances a college application or resume – especially if she wants to work at one of GSNI’s camps once she turns 18.

Girls who have completed Council Approved PA Basic and Outdoor training, CITA, CIT1 or CIT2 will practice the skills they learned and give back at camp! During service week, they choose where they want to focus their efforts – whether it’s programming, teambuilding or general topics. Along with our CIT Director, they will plan the week to ensure they focus on their interests in addition to camp needs. They will be positive role models for younger campers while fine-tuning their leadership, communication and team-building skills. Ongoing mentoring and guidance will be provided by trained staff during the week in order to refine their skills and performance. This is an excellent path to becoming a camp counselor.

Volunteer-led Camps Volunteer-Led Day and Twilight Camps Are you looking for more outdoor adventures this summer? Check out our volunteer-led day camps! Our trained GSNI volunteers have created GSNI approved day and twilight camps throughout our Council. Activities could include forest exploration, outdoor cooking, archery, swimming and more! The day camps listed below are open to all girls, regardless of what troop or service unit they are in. Girls that are not registered Girl Scouts can attend as well – they just need to sign up to be a Girl Scout prior to registering for camp. Additional service units are planning to add day camps for the girls, so keep an eye on our website at www.girlscoutsni.org for more opportunities. You can also check with your service unit manager or troop leader to see if there will be a day camp in your area. Adult volunteers are often needed, so check with the Camp Director at the email addresses below. Volunteer-Led Day Camps are NOT Adventure Allowance eligible.

Many Volunteer-led Day Camps are opportunities for Program Aides to help out. Please contact each camp to see if you can serve. For more information on Program Aides, see page 11.

Camp Information Campers with Disabilities

The goal of our camps is to provide a successful experience for all girls. Please communicate with our Customer Care team at customercare@girlscoutni.org or 844-476-4463, about campers with any special needs or disabilities. This enables our camps to make every effort to accommodate those needs in each facility with appropriate staff.

Transportation

Transportation is only available for Camp McCormick Day Camp at an additional fee. Families are responsible for providing all other transportation to and from camp.

Health and Safety

All Girl Scout camps in this brochure are licensed by their state and uphold state and federal health and safety codes, as well as Girl Scouts of the USA policies and standards. Camp Dean and Camp McCormick are also accredited by the American Camp Association. All camps meet industry standards for health and site safety, food service management, human resources, program design, and activities. Health centers are staffed by a resident health supervisor. Unit counselors are first-aid/ CPR trained. For all camps, emergency care is available at a nearby clinic or hospital. No camper—child or adult—is admitted to camp without proper health forms being completed and signed. Each camp has procedures in place to monitor and respond to emergencies, including weather conditions, to ensure the health and safety of campers.

Visitors

Families are encouraged to visit camp during their scheduled Open House, prior to the start of summer camp sessions. To ensure safety and security, no visitors are allowed on site during camp sessions.

Program Changes

Although rare, the Girl Scout council, for a variety of reasons, may occasionally cancel a camp session. If this occurs, you can expect the entire camp fee, including the deposit, to be refunded. Other times, certain activities described in the camp sessions must be suspended or changed due to circumstances beyond our control, such as inclement weather, equipment availability, and staffing. In these situations, we adapt by offering alternate program options. Under circumstances of this type, refunds should not be expected.

Camp Registration Information

Registration for all summer camps will be on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning February 14, 2018.

Register:

• Online at www.girlscoutsni.org/activities • By mail to GSNI Rockford Resource Center, 2820 McFarland Road, Rockford, IL 61107 • By fax to 847-741-5667 • In person at any GSNI Resource Center • Scanning and emailing to customercare@girlscoutsni.org

Deposit

A $50 deposit is REQUIRED for EACH session/person registered. Deposits may be cash, check, or charge. Financial Assistance or Cookie Dough/S’more Dough/Cashew Cash cannot be used as deposits. Family camps and extra adventures must be paid in full at time of registration.

Balance Due/Required Paperwork

All balances are due to a GSNI Resource Center by June 1, 2018. Camper paperwork will be due at check-in at the beginning of each camp session.

Buddy Preference

An important part of camp is making new friends. However, we understand that your camper may feel more comfortable coming to camp with a friend. Two girls who would like to attend camp together should fill in the buddy preference section during online registration, or, if registering by paper form, on the registration form and mail the two registration forms together in the same envelope to guarantee both are registered for the program. Buddy requests must be mutual and for the same camp and session. Both campers must satisfy prerequisites.

Refunds

Deposits, extra adventure fees, and Family Camp fees are non-refundable. A full refund, including deposit, is made only if a camper cannot be placed in a program or if it is necessary to cancel the program. At the end of the summer, partial refunds will be considered on a case-by-case basis and only in the case of extenuating family circumstances or medical reasons supported by a doctor’s statement. No refunds will be made for campers arriving late, leaving early, attending only part of the program, or for those who fail to attend. Contact Customer Care at customercare@girlscoutsni. org or 844-476-4463, for a refund request form.

Financial Assistance

To apply for Financial Assistance, complete the Campership Application available at www.girlscoutsni.org. The application must be submitted with $50 deposit and registration form. The application deadline is April 1, 2018, with notice of initial award sent after April 15, 2018. Financial assistance is available only to registered members of GSNI. Applications will not be processed without the deposit and registration form. Extra Adventure fees are not covered by campership.

Cookie Dough/S’more Dough/Cashew Cash

These certificates, earned by Girl Scouts through participation in GSNI product programs, may be used toward the balance of a girl’s camp fee. They may not be used for the deposit or adult camp fees.

Program Aides Program Aides (PAs) are Girl Scout Cadettes and older who lead and assist with activities at council events, service units events – including Volunteer Led Day Camps, and/or troop meetings. Program Aide Basic training is a required step in earning the Cadette Program Aide award. As a Program Aide, she’ll learn how to work with younger Girl Scouts, develop her teaching and communication skills, and become a role model and leader. 4 Camp Challenge Pa tc h P r o g r a m Any GSNI troop can participate in the 4 Camp Challenge Patch Program. Girls can earn this unique fun patch and flames for spending at least one night as a troop camping at any of our four camps! Get started with the campfire base patch available at any of our GSNI stores. During camp check-out, the Ranger will help any leader purchase flame patches ($.50/patch) on behalf of the girls who attended. Patch fees can be paid directly to the Ranger at the time of check-out (checks are preferred). Don’t wait! Make your troop’s reservation now! New this year: Troop Camping Flame Patch and Service Rocker Patch The troop camping flame patch is earned when girls camp outdoors at a non-GSNI property (such as a county campground, state park, etc.) with their troop. This patch can be earned in the same experience as earning a new Troop Camping badge. Troop camping flame patches can be purchased in the GSNI store. The Service Rocker Patch is earned when girls complete a 12 hour service project at a GSNI property with the preapproval of a Ranger. Service rocker patches can be purchased from the Ranger.
