2022 Volunteer Awards

GSEP is always proud of and grateful for its amazing volunteers! In November, we were back in-person at Camp Laughing Waters for our annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony. 76 volunteers, seven Service Units and one community organization were recognized for going above and beyond.

The Gertrude K. McGonigle Award recognizes one individual a year who has been a registered Girl Scout for a minimum of ten years, has proven to be a positive role model while working directly with girls, and has exemplified the values and traditions of Girl Scouting. This year, the award was presented to Beth Gutierrez. Beth’s commitment to Girl Scouts was made especially clear during the pandemic, as she maintained close connections with girls and their families. An endorser spoke of her daughter’s struggle with mental health and shared that Beth helped her daughter pull through this pandemic with ease and confidence. Beth was thanked for keeping her Girl Scouts engaged with each other, despite being virtual and for arranging activities like cookie decorating. GSEP was honored to present a 90-year Numeral Guard to Berks County Girl Scout Ronnie Backenstoe. A Numeral Guard recognizes an individual’s total years of registered membership, including years as a girl and as an adult member. Although she was not able to attend in person, a small ceremony was later held in Ronnie’s honor. Now 100-years-old, Ronnie is the former director of Camp Mosey Wood and is proud to share that she has been selling Girl Scout Cookies since 1932. Ronnie continues to show us what “proud to be a Girl Scout” is all about.
