What is cookiewow!? cookieWOW! is Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways’ official exclusive kickoff to the 2019 Girl Scout Cookie Season. Each year in January, girls gather to refresh their entrepreneurial skills through interactive games hosted in partnership with businesses who serve our community. This year, we’re excited to be at Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome. GSNYPENN Pathways is chartered by Girl Scouts of the USA to administer the most well-known, successful, (and fun!) leadership development program for girls in 24 counties across New York and two in northern Pennsylvania.

Where Does the Money Go? Girl Scouts is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide incredible, life-changing experiences for girls and young women to help them empower themselves to be successful in life. Girl Scouts, volunteers and members (and Girl Scout staff, too) pay membership fees to Girl Scouts of the USA to be part of the Movement. These fees and royalties from the use of our trademarked names and flavors are used by the national organization to provide insurance and support. The Girl Scout Cookie Program is one way that troops and local councils work together to raise funds to create and support the ongoing infrastructure needed to run a program this size. Monies raised are used to improve and maintain four Adventure Centers across
the region (Trefoil, Hoover, Amahami and Comstock) for summer camp, day camp and troop adventures at subsidized prices.
Full-time staff provide training and support for volunteers and girls year-round; plan and promote programs, and the council develops and maintains relationships with community partners across the 26-county region. Troops receive up to $1.00 per package and they decide how to spend their cookie money.
During cookie season, council staff are hyper focused on sharing a broader message to the public to help troops raise monies for their individual and group goals. Over the rest of the year, our team looks for opportunities to provide new experiences to teach life lessons in a fun and safe environment.

Skills & Community Partners
Goal Setting Girls set cookie sales goals and, with their team, create a plan to reach them. This matters because girls need to know how to set and reach goals to succeed in school, on the job and in life. According to the Girl Scout Research Institute, 85% of girls surveyed in 2016 learned how to set goals and meet deadlines, make a plan for how to achieve a goal, change actions when needed to keep on track with their goal and work with others to achieve goals set together.
Community Partner WonderWorks, a science-focused indoor amusement park, combines both education and entertainment into one venue. With over 100 hands-on exhibits, there is something unique and challenging for all ages! Feel the power of 71 mile per hour hurricane-force winds in the Hurricane Shack. Make huge, life-sized bubbles in the Bubble Lab. Get the NASA treatment and experience zero gravity in the Astronaut Training Gyro. Nail it by lying on the death–defying Bed of Nails. WonderWorks is also home to two indoor ropes courses—Canyon Climb, the world’s largest suspended indoor ropes course, and Sky Tykes, a confidence booster climb for small children. WonderWorks also hosts birthday parties and special events. WonderWorks is located in the canyon section of Destiny USA in Syracuse, N.Y. Learn more at wonderworksdestiny.com.

Decision Making Girls decide where and when to sell cookies, how to market their sale and what to do with their earnings. This matters because girls must make many decisions, big and small, in their lives. Learning this skill at a young age helps them to understand the benefits and reproductions decisions making, which of course is an essential life skill. According to the Girl Scout Research Institute, 88% of girls surveyed in 2016 learned how to think through different choices, explain the reasons why they made a decision, decide between multiple choices and listen to everyone’s thoughts when making group decisions.
Community Partner Redhouse is a nonprofit, multi-arts organization, located in Syracuse N.Y., dedicated to the production and presentation of interdisciplinary works, theatre, music, and visual art. Redhouse is a regional provider of community-based arts education, with an emphasis on providing artistic experience for youth at risk and individuals with disabilities. Redhouse empowers youth in the community to become independent, citizen-artists by providing process-oriented, pre-professional training via their RedEd Programming. Through public programs and community engagement initiatives, Redhouse aims to stimulate cultural activities and contribute to community development through the arts. Learn more at theredhouse.org.

Money Management Girls develop their own budgets, take cookie orders, and handle customers’ money, in essence the essential three steps to basic money management. This matters because girls need to know how to handle money: from their lunch money, to their allowance, to (someday) their paycheck. According to the Girl Scout Research Institute, 88% of girls surveyed in 2016 learned how to count money and make change, create a plan to save their money, track their money so they know how much they have, and distinguish the difference between wants and needs.
Community Partner At M&T Bank, understanding what’s important means realizing the role a bank plays in people’s lives. And then living up to those responsibilities, by helping families, businesses and communities thrive. It’s what they’ve been doing for more than 160 years. Learn more at mtb.com.

BUSINESS ETHICS Girls act honestly and responsibly during every step of the cookie sale. Girls with integrity value others principles, are honest, respectful, take personal responsibility, show compassion, and act dependability. This matters because employers want to hire ethical employees — and the world needs ethical leaders in every field. According to the Girl Scout Research Institute, 94% of girls surveyed in 2016 learned how to be respectful of others, take responsibility for what they say and do, keep their promises, and not lie to get out of trouble.
Community Partner Nexamp is a solar company building community shared solar farms across New York state. Nexamp allows homeowners, renters, small businesses, organizations and towns to join the solar movement. Through Nexamp’s program, people sign up for a share of a local community solar farm and save money on annual electricity costs — an alternative to rooftop solar panels and an easy way for everyone to participate in solar, while supporting a cleaner planet and saving money. Like the Girl Scouts, Nexamp believes everyone has a responsibility to practice good business ethics — whether they are selling cookies or helping a family join a local solar farm — and that using clean energy resources and protecting the natural environment is the ethical thing to do when making decisions about how to power homes, businesses and towns. Ethical business practices also means promoting equality — everyone should have the ability to save money on electricity costs and support clean energy, and cleaner communities. Community shared solar allows everyone to benefit. New York state has a goal of being powered by 50% renewable energy by the year 2030 and helping people all over the state and from all different backgrounds join community shared solar farms is a big step toward meeting this goal! 7 Learn more at 1.800.945.5124 or solarize@nexamp.com.
PEOPLE SKILLS Girls learn how to talk (and listen!) to their customers, as well as learning how to work as a team with other girls. An effective communicator is an invaluable asset as it decreases the possibility of miscommunication. This will teach your girl the value of listening, understanding and communicating. This matters because it helps them do better in school (on group projects, on sports teams, and on the playground) and, later, at work. According to the Girl Scout Research Institute, 85% of girls surveyed in 2016 learned how to be comfortable talking to and being around new people, determine the best way to get their message across when talking with people, and tell people what they hope to achieve when working toward a goal.
Community Partner Water Safari Resort is a family fun Adirondack vacation destination located in Old Forge, N.Y. Properties include Enchanted Forest Water Safari (New York’s largest water theme park), Calypso’s Cove Family Fun Park (featuring arcade, mini-golf, go karts and more), Old Forge Camping Resort (year-round campground featuring heated cabins and cottages, RV and tent sites) and Water’s Edge Inn (lakefront hotel with guest rooms and luxury suites). Tips from Local Cookie Pros Lydia: Madison: Set a high goal and don’t give up until you achieve it!
Mackenzie: I set a goal and I go out and do what it takes to get to my goal and I don’t give up until I achieve it.
Miranda: My number one cookie selling tip is, ask everyone. One man walked by my booth and when he was almost by me, I asked if he would like to by Girl Scout Cookies. He politely said, “I would love to, but I wouldn’t have if you hadn’t asked me.”
You have to work extra hard, and go on as many walkabouts as possible. It is a good idea to go to the same houses when cookies arrive and again at the end of the sale as a “last chance” for cookies.
Kaylee: Cookie success comes from being positive and friendly to customers, being active and helpful in the community, and making sure safety is a priority. I always leave thank you notes to all customers, and go out of my way to run and work cookie booths. I always pass along customer input to my leader to pass onto council to make Girl Scout Cookie season more successful! Girl power!
Callie Jo: Always have cookies available and ready when someone requests them. Keeping a stock means people will turn to you first. No one wants to wait!
Jayda: 1. Set a goal and stick with it even if people try and talk you out of it. 2. Be organized using notebooks, highlighters, and/or Post-it notes. 3. Figure out how much you want to sell daily by dividing your goal by the number of selling days.
Ella: Always be polite and say thank you, even if a customer doesn’t buy cookies. It’s always best to show how amazing Girl Scouts are. It’s always good to set a goal so you can push yourself to it.

3ways to Get Girl Scout Cookies Each year, millions of people satisfy their sweet tooth by purchasing genuine Girl Scout Cookies – but how do they do it? It helps to know a Girl Scout! Council staff members cannot sell or order cookies (unless they have a daughter enrolled in the program). Cookies are not available for purchase at Girl Scout Boutiques or local stores. Orders obtained via Amazon, e-Bay and other online retailers are expressly prohibited. The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girl-led business and entrepreneurial program for girls in the world – so, it makes sense that genuine Girl Scout Cookies are only allowed to be sold by genuine Girl Scouts! You can get them directly through an in-person order or community booth sale, or through the Digital Cookie online ordering.
1
Order In-Person Have cookies delivered to you! A Girl Scout can take your order on her paper order card or through a link she sends you using Digital Cookie, our online ordering system. Girls and their parents often bring paper order forms everywhere they go! They may post videos and pitches on social media to let everyone know they’re selling cookies and to share her Digital Cookie link. (Note: Girl Delivery is available when placing an online order prior to February 7 and costs you nothing for shipment if you live near the Girl Scout. Orders made on Digital Cookie after February 7 or out-of-area are shipped directly to customers and incur a shipping cost.)

The Girl Scout Cookie Program You already know the Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girl-led entrepreneurial program in the world—but you may not realize all of the skills girls develop in the process. Girls participate in programs to help them develop five essential business skills: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. It is very possible one of the patches your young entrepreneur is wearing on her sash is a badge for one of these five essential life skills. Will her troop assist the local animal rescue center, help the homeless or plant a community garden? Travel across the country to hike the Rocky Mountains, or cross an ocean to visit London? Will she attend one of our amazing summer camps, or earn one of Girl Scouting’s highest awards? It’s up to her and her troop to plan their next adventure! When girls take part in the Girl Scout Cookie Program, they get so much more than amazing experiences and adventures.
