Now & Then
Opinion Three weeks, they thought, if we just hunker down… Three months, they hoped, if summer came and warmer weather could perhaps help eradicate the virus. Then we could get back to “normal” – however that might look. Nearly eight months into the global COVID-19 pandemic, in October 2020, we started our new Girl Scout membership year and things were still far from normal. Eight long months. We were still masked, but we were back to work and our children were back to school. Inperson, hybrid, completely online— this was our new chapter in the unending “new normal.” At Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways, staff worked mostly from home, troops met via the internet or in person, and we all anxiously awaited a medical miracle that would rid us of the tiny, invisible enemy that shredded the comfort of our daily routines. Ever vigilant, ever hopeful, we pressed on despite the challenges of working and living our lives in this strange hybrid world. “Zoom” became a word and a destination. And even though some of us did enjoy more time at home, we were also eager for face-to-face and human contact. Those cherished “before covid” days… Communication was key, as we celebrated small wins together and brainstormed ways to support each other through ever-changing conditions. Our Girl Scouts relied on us to protect them while still supplying enriching leadership experiences. Our families, friends, and neighbors formed “bubbles” to minimize contact. Many of our members are essential workers and had no choice but to head out to work as healthcare providers, teachers, first responders, and utility workers. Grocery stores, drugstores, and restaurants were open and needed to be staffed. Our children learned resiliency as they navigated the pandemic with us. Not only did we have
to accept that our plans might change in an instant, but we had to find ways to work around unforeseen obstacles. And work around they did! Many more girls earned avatar badges by creating personalized videos and posting them online with their links during our annual Treats, Reads & More product program in the fall of 2020. Our Service Units and troops fashioned concepts for new drive-thru cookie booths, much to the delight of cookie lovers across our council, during the early winter months of our 2021 cookie season. Our community partners continued to help us by allowing girls to run their cookie businesses from their essential service locations. We even tried a new cookie season partnership with GrubHub, so our girls could experience delivery service behind the scenes. Our staff continued holding trainings, programs, and events whenever possible. Our volunteers continued to surprise and delight their troops with creative experiences, supplying a lifeline to many whose families were deeply affected by the virus. Safety first meant that we had to hold our annual springtime volunteer awards online as we shared our gratitude and pride virtually. As the snow melted and the days got longer, we were thrilled to offer summer camp after canceling our 2020 season. We took extra care to minimize risks and our girls had experiences they will long remember. We offered Family Camp to get our members outside again and will continue to find ways for all members to enjoy our properties.

Life Contactless Sales, Virtual and Drive-Thru Booths, Grubhub: How Girl Scouts Sold Cookies Creatively in 2021 Community Partners Once Again Stepped Up to Assist Local Cookie Entrepreneurs GSNYPENN Girl Scouts flexed creativity, innovation, and leadership during the 2021 cookie season to overcome challenges to more traditional face-to-face and walk-up sales due to the ongoing pandemic. Efforts included increased contactless sales, new takes on traditional booths, and a national partnership with Grubhub. The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girl-led entrepreneurial program in the world and powers activities, community service, experiences, programming, and more. All funds stay local as girls develop important life and leadership skills—goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics—for a lifetime of success. Digital & Contactless Sales Girl Scouts used personal Digital Cookie order links to connect with friends, family, and neighbors. Cookies were delivered no-contact or shipped for a fee. Many girls also used platforms like FaceTime and Zoom to host virtual booths. New troop ordering links were searchable by zip code on the Cookie Finder site and app to order cookies from local troops for shipment. Drive-Thru Booths & Community Partners Cookie Finder allowed cookie fans to use their zip code to locate drive-thru booths. Girl Scouts also worked with a host of community partners like businesses and organizations for drive-thrus. Many partners also hosted cookie sales through their locations with proceeds returning to the girl or troop. GSNYPENN also partnered with the New York State Fairgrounds to host weekend drivethrus for troops in the Central New York area. Grubhub Delivery Thanks to a new national collaboration, Grubhub delivery was available in select GSNYPENN areas in New York state during the 2021 season. Service locations included Auburn, Binghamton, Canandaigua, Cicero, Fayetteville, Horseheads, Ithaca, Syracuse, Utica, Victor, and Watertown.

How Girl Scouts Helped Their Communities While the new troop year looked different, Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways actively formed virtual troops to mirror traditional troop experiences but where girls participated from the comfort of home. Most virtual troops were staff-led, and girls continued to earn badges, participate in engaging activities and no-contact community service (like writing letters to nursing home residents sequestered from loved ones due to the pandemic), and even sold cookies to help raise funds for a variety of projects and endeavors. Some girls opted to go solo as Juliettes, or individually registered members. As an individual, girls participated in all Girl Scout activities that were age/grade-level-appropriate, earned highest awards, sold cookies, and more. Others continued through a hybrid model of inperson and virtual troop meetings and activities. “Studies show that Girl Scouts improves girls’ confidence and makes them better prepared for life’s challenges. Our program helped girls become leaders during the challenging days of 2020-21 as they discovered new interests, strengths, and abilities, and formed new ways to make their communities better through Girl Scouting despite the pandemic,” says GSNYPENN CEO Julie Dale.
Isabel (Izzy) Fingerman of Troop 10520 in Liverpool, N.Y., whose quick thinking and resourcefulness helped her save her four-yearold cousin from a potential drowning in the Seneca River and earned her Girl Scouts of the USA’s National Medal of Honor for valiant efforts. The Medal of Honor is one of the highest national honors the Movement can bestow and is given to a girl who displays a heroic act beyond her degree of maturity and training for saving a life or attempting to save a life.
Adult volunteer Amy Chilson from Sayre, Pa., earned Silver-level by helping with local service unit events, making masks and sewing blankets for foster care children. Girl Scout Emily Chilson from Sayre earned Bronze-level by running a dinner at her local YMCA, making masks, sewing blankets, and running a troop meeting. Girl Scout Ella Chilson from Sayre earned Silver-level by making masks, sewing blankets, running an ice cream social and running a troop meeting.
Highlights from around the council of Girl Scouts in action in their communities include: Meghan Cumber of Troop 10752 in Cicero, N.Y., whose love of baking discovered during quarantine alongside her loyal canine taste tester—rescue dog Lola—led her to create Megalicious Dog Treats. Meghan and two of her Girl Scout sisters were working on their Silver Award and it was a natural fit to tie the treats to their community service project component. Meghan led a group of 5-8th graders in making dog blankets (virtually) that were donated—along with her treats and proceeds from sales—to local animal shelters.
Girl Scouts from New York and Pennsylvania earned the President’s Volunteer Service Award for volunteer hours in 2020. The award recognizes outstanding volunteers within certifying organizations who earn distinction through community service, either in a 12-month period or over the course of a lifetime. Troop 40408 from Red Creek School District in Wolcott, N.Y., earned the Gold-level award for group volunteering which included helping with the Rescue Mission’s FreezeOut 5K to End Homelessness, holding a beach cleanup, organizing a Pumpkin Walk and donating holiday poinsettias to local senior citizens.
The opening of Extraordinary Acres Playground at Van Lieu Park in Central Square, N.Y., the community’s first all-inclusive playground. The project was initially developed by Central Square Girl Scouts Molly Giblin, Angilee Haberer, Rachael Fonger and Sophia Jurenko of Troop 10871 for their Silver Award. They, together with 17 members of the Central Square Service Unit took the project even further with the help and support of their community.

Fun & Games Ask Juliette Dear Juliette, I made good friends at Girl Scout camp in the 1970s, but we’ve lost touch. Now I’m retiring and would love to give back to the Movement that shaped me and reconnect with my campmates. What can I do?
Dear Juliette,
Dear Alum,
I’ve been a Girl Scout since I was a Brownie. Now I’m in 9th grade and feel I’m too busy. Plus, half my troop quit. Am I too old? How do I stay involved?
There are many ways to stay connected to the Movement that has meant so much to you!
Dear Undecided, You’re NEVER too “old” for Girl Scouts! We have adult and Lifetime members who remain part of our Movement well past their girl years. Girl Scouts is girl-led. Talk with your troop. Older girls may meet less frequently but concentrate on community projects and travel. Make memories during camp adventures and trips you plan using funds raised through activities like the cookie program. If your troop disbands, renew your membership and participate in special interest ones like Travel, Mariners, Trailblazers and more! Or keep your journey going as a “Juliette” – an independent member who continues on an individual basis. Staying in our leadership program has many advantages! We’re a service organization that can help complete your school’s or honor society’s required volunteer hours. In high school, work on your Gold Award. This honor is earned by less than 6 percent of girls annually and is impressive to colleges, universities, and the military—which advances Gold Award Girl Scouts a full rank! There’s a place for every girl in our Movement. I hope you continue.
Become a volunteer and be the girl champion she’ll remember. Volunteering is flexible and fun, plus you help girls develop skills and confidence. Imagine the smiles, excitement, and memories—those are the moments you share at Girl Scouts just as you did as a girl!

Girl Scouts has been a force for positive change since 1912. As an alum, there’s no stopping what you can do for girls as you invest in this next generation!

Dear Juliette, My granddaughter wants to be a Girl Scout but there are no nearby troops. What can I do? I was a Girl Scout, my daughter was a Girl Scout, and we know my granddaughter would benefit from the program. Signed, Forever a Girl Scout in the Finger Lakes Dear Forever a Girl Scout, You know the saying—once a Girl Scout, always a Girl Scout! You can lead her troop and split responsibilities with other caregivers from the school or community. We have many fathers and grandfathers who run troops, too! Your local council offers volunteers training and support, so reach out and get started today at gsnypenn.org/volunteer. Thanks for continuing the family tradition! Forever Green, Juliette
I don’t like the troop I joined. We don’t do anything I want to try. Why do some troops camp and others don’t? I want to take more adventures!
Does she bake?
Get involved with your council’s alum activities to start receiving newsletters and event invitations. There are even travel trips planned to destinations like The Birthplace (my home) in Savannah, Georgia, and London, Paris, and more. Check out gsnypenn.org/alum for more information.

Dear Juliette,
Does she road trip?
Support our mission by donating to your council to help girls experience Girl Scouting. Sponsor a whole troop or help an individual with membership, uniform, badges, etc. Offer space at your business for troops to hold meetings or cookie booths. Classified Your Donations Make A Difference Your support of our council stays local and has a direct impact on the lives of GSNYPENN members across our footprint. Did you know a donation to our Financial Assistance fund helps cover the cost of opportunities like summer camp, annual membership, uniforms, patches, and travel? We’re deeply appreciative of our annual support from corporations, foundations, individuals, community chests, and the United Way. Thanks to gifts made from October 1, 2020, to September 30, 2021, we supported girls in so many ways! 1,179 girls and 28 adult volunteers were given the gift of an annual membership—a $25 value. This allowed for new troops to form and more girls to participate in Girl Scout programming, no matter their financial burden. We also helped 59 troops with program supplies and assistance. Along with memberships and program supplies, your donations also give girls the chance to attend camp. We awarded more than 59 camperships for summer 2021—which was even more exciting for girls to return to camp after canceling our 2020 season due to the pandemic!

Juliette Gordon Low National Society Through planned giving, you become part of the Juliette Gordon Low National Society and are honored with this beautiful pin. If you haven’t made a planned gift, it’s easy to leave any amount or percentage of your life insurance or estate to Girl Scouts. A small bequest makes a huge difference for girls and their future! Plus, society membership ensures you always stay connected to us. GSUSA and Dianne Belk, founding chair of the society, raised a challenge in 2018 for each council across the nation to acquire 4 planned gifts. In return, each council received a planned gift of $10,000 from Belk and Lawrence Calder. We’re very proud that we accepted and met the challenge! MY2020-2021 JGL Society Members from our council area: Join these members through your planned gift—contact us to discuss your options! The process takes less than 5 minutes, but your gift helps girls develop leadership skills to last a LIFETIME! Reach out to our Development team at 315.698.9400 today. Why Girl Scouts? Girl Scouts are confident—even in the face of challenges. They’re kind, even when others aren’t. They’re problem solvers who see opportunity where others get stuck. Essentially, a Girl Scout is your kid at their best. We’re here with your family to support:
Her Dreams
Her Growth
Her Success
Girl Scouts are learning about robots, hiking, dancing, painting murals, feeding the hungry, and even writing laws to change the world. If she can dream it, we’ll help her do it.
Girl Scouts focus on their potential rather than perfection. They try new things, knowing they’ll be accepted by their sister Girl Scouts for exactly who they are today and who they can be tomorrow.
Girl Scouts are all about collaboration, not competition. Meeting goals and celebrating wins as a team doesn’t just feel great, it teaches them to work well with others, which will take them far in life.
Best of all, when she becomes a Girl Scout, you become a Girl Scout family— creating special memories, bonding over challenges, and growing stronger together every day.
Visit gsnypenn.org/join to start her adventure today!
