Like Barbara J. Teal, formerly of Binghamton, NY. We know she enjoyed bird watching and playing bridge. Recently, we were reminded that in her youth, Barbara was a member of our legacy council, Girl Scouts of Indian Hills. She honored her Girl Scout leadership experience with a generous legacy bequest for the preservation and development of our Amahami (“little hills”) Adventure Center in Deposit, NY. Barbara’s gift allows us to share her love of nature and the outdoors with hundreds of girls each summer. (As no electronics are allowed, we imagine quite a few are bonding over card games in their cabins, too!) Through the generosity of alums and donors like Barbara Teal, our movement continues to have a profound impact on the girls we are honored to serve. This year, our movement embraced a new theme: the acknowledgment of the G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™ within each of us. We apply this theme to everything we do and made great progress in delivering on our promise to membership. For example, we reimagined our cookie convention and troops saw a significant increase in their sales. We reintroduced the semi-annual program guide to make it easier for troops to plan their year out. We realigned our staff into four regions, and purchased new technology to enable member service in the field. We invested in our Adventure Center properties, adding a new paved road, new buildings, and newly improved facilities for better experiences. We initiated traveling stores and popup boutiques to better serve outlying areas of our Council. We found new ways to recognize and support our volunteers. Our work is far from complete. Girl Scouts continues to evolve as the needs of our membership change. We are investing in our properties to use them year-round, and partnering with community organizations in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) to deliver more robust programming to our members. Our outdoor programs are challenging and encourage girls to take calculated risks that encourage leadership. Girl Scouts is the best leadership experience for girls for one reason. It works. Why? It’s G.I.R.L.– led. Since our founding we’ve had plenty of competition; 105 years later and we’re stronger than ever because of our laser-focus on one thing: the girls. Thank you for your continued support,

Highest Awards THE HIGHEST HONORS A GIRL SCOUT CAN EARN. All three awards - Gold, Silver and Bronze - give girls the chance to do big things while working on an issue they care about, to inspire others, and to leave a lasting impression on their community. The Gold Award is the highest Girl Scout honor. Once achieved, it demonstrates to colleges, employers, and the community that she’s out there changing the world.

Gold Award Girl Scouts Crystal Bulger Geneva, NY Take Action Project: Art Donations for Goodman Street Boys and Girls Club Crystal is passionate about art and wanted to be sure that the children in her community were given the opportunity to explore their creativity. She set out to raise awareness of the benefits of art with local businesses and collected art supplies for the Girls and Boys Club in her community. Crystal is a graduate of Geneva High School and is currently attending Finger Lakes Community College. Rachael Cleveland Covington, PA Take Action Project: Cancer Care Packages Rachael raised awareness and addressed the issue of loneliness among children hospitalized with cancer. She and her team created “cancer care packages” for a local hospital. One of Rachael’s favorite Girl Scouts memories is her trip to Washington, DC to celebrate 100 years of Girl Scouting. Rachael is a graduate of North Penn Mansfield High School and is currently attending Mansfield University, where she is studying nursing.

8

Deanna Cofone Nichols, NY Take Action Project: Health and Wellness Fair Deanna served her community by creating a health and wellness fair and invited several community partners to share their opportunities with the public. Sarah Connor Geneva, NY Take Action Project: Bringing Bluebirds Back to the Finger Lakes Sarah built bluebird boxes to help bring the birds to the Finger Lakes region and placed them in the Kashong Conservation Area, as well several residential areas in Geneva. She also planned presentations to help educate elementary-aged children about the bluebird. Sarah is a graduate of Geneva High School and is currently a freshman at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Rachael Davis Horseheads, NY Take Action Project: Memory Garden Rachael created a Memory Garden at a local senior living facility to provide residents with a quiet place to reflect on their lives and enjoy nature. Families of residents who have passed away can contribute to the garden by leaving plants in their memory. Rachael is a graduate of Horseheads High School and is currently attending Keuka College. Samantha Fairbanks Horseheads, NY Take Action Project: Roof Overhead Samantha and her team built a pavilion at Camp Casowasco. The site did not have a shelter to protect campers/visitors from the elements. One of Samantha’s favorite Girl Scouts memories is attending Misty Hollow Summer Camp. She is a graduate of Horseheads High School and is currently a student at James Madison University, where she is studying earth science with a concentration in policy.

Gold Award Girl Scouts (cont.) Jillian Gregory Andover, NY Take Action Project: GreenWood Hill Farm Trail System Mapping Jillian created a mapping system and birdfeeders for a local nonprofit farm. One of her favorite Girl Scouts memories is camping in the Adirondacks. Jillian is a graduate of Andover Central High School and is currently a student at Alfred State College of Technology - State University of New York, where she is studying digital media and animation. Natalie Griffin Oswego, NY Take Action Project: Feminist Speech Natalie’s project focused on educating the public about injustice and bias against women and about empowering young girls to be successful. She is currently a senior at Wayne Central School. She created a presentation using various learning methods; portions of this will be used in future Veteran’s Day programs and social studies curriculum in her school district. She also erected a flag pole at GSNYPENN’s Amahami Adventure Center. Amelia hopes that earning her Gold Award will inspire younger Girl Scouts to stay with scouting and go on to earn their Gold Awards as well. Amelia is a graduate of Afton Central High School.

Brenna addressed the issue of teen stress by creating a yoga club for teens in her community. The club

Caylin located and mapped gravesites of every veteran in each cemetery in her community. Program Supplies & Assistance

Your support stays local to GSNYPENN and has a direct impact on the lives of girls and adults across our Council region. Did you know a donation to our Council’s financial assistance fund helps cover the cost of favorite Girl Scout opportunities like camperships, a girl’s annual membership fee, vouchers for uniforms and patches, and travel and destinations? We are deeply appreciative of the annual support our Council receives from corporations, foundations, individuals, community chests, and the United Way. Last year, 2,731 girls who might not have had the means to join Girl Scouts had their annual membership dues paid for because of your generosity. Through your support, we also provided assistance to help 134 adult volunteers lead troops—because you cared enough to give to GSNYPENN.

Adult Volunteer Memberships

For over a century, Girl Scouts have proudly worn uniforms that identify them as members of this distinctive leadership organization. Thanks to your gifts, 333 girls applied for assistance and received items such as their Start Up Kit, Guide to Girl Scouting, tunics, sashes, and vests from our Council. Girl Scouts and camping go together like chocolate, marshmallows, and graham crackers! Girls make memories that last a lifetime when they attend programs at our Adventure Centers. In 2017, your donations provided 192 camperships. Just imagine all of the friendships, memories, and laughter created because you gave girls the gift of camp! If you would like to make a donation to support one or all of these opportunities, please contact Angela Smith at 315.698.9400 ext. 2020 or asmith@gsnypenn.org.

The Girl Scout Mission Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

Girl Scout Law I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.
