OPINION
“In these uncertain times…” How often have we heard that phrase uttered since March 2020? How often have we used it ourselves to explain why things are so different, so unusual, so unpredictable? Yes, 2020 will be forever remembered in the nation’s history books for a collective experience we hope will never be repeated. We reflect on a year of uncertainty, closures, deep sadness over postponed opportunities and canceled trips. We mourn our friends and family and missed milestones, yet, despite the darkness, we must remember to look for the blessings that the 2019-2020 member year bestowed upon us. As an organization, Girl Scouts morphed into a lifeline for many girls, volunteers and families as they struggled to maintain a sense of normalcy during a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic. For GSNYPENN members, the 20192020 member year encompassed planning some of our most ambitious reward trips and camp experiences ever. We were excitedly well on our way to one of our most successful cookie seasons ever.
Like everyone, we were compelled to completely shut down and suspend all activities, including our iconic cookie booth sales, on Friday, March 13, 2020. Our staff shifted to work from makeshift home offices. Working closely with our passionate volunteers, we pivoted quickly to recruit over 150 community partners to help sell girl and troop cookie inventory safely. Local establishments made room for Girl Scouts,

and our volunteers worked tirelessly to provide a connection for their girls while schools remained closed. Our product program team partnered with Meals on Wheels organizations, first responders, food pantries and others across our entire territory to donate cookies to those who needed a little lift or worked tirelessly for the good of all. Our programming, volunteer support and customer care teams realigned to provide activities in an online environment. Our marketing and communications team provided much-needed crisis communications, COVID-19 response updates and guidance with changes occurring almost daily. Our retail team shifted to online and curbside in order to provide members with program supplies and core necessities. Our development team pursued grant opportunities to benefit our membership and remained connected to our alums, community and funders.

Girl Scouts is more than a leadership organization for young girls. It is, in many ways, a chosen family. An opportunity to examine situations and challenges and rise to a call for action. It’s about pushing ourselves and our girls to creatively find ways to stay involved despite the obstacles thrown in our paths. And isn’t that true leadership development at its best? Thank you for being a vital part of our family. Thank you for being Girl Scout Strong.
Julie Dale, CEO
Members taught girls how to sew masks. Girls learned new skills as they created videos to share their talents with others. We all learned a new verb: Zoom. Troop leaders and adult volunteers especially had to pivot as many families put a pause on all activities.

We joyously laughed; we silently wept when the magnitude of the pandemic’s effects became too much to bear alone. We’ve given each other space as needed and grace and kindness when things changed so rapidly that they led to unnecessary confusion.
To the promise of brighter days ahead,
Our finance team helped members handle delicate money issues in a time when many families had lost jobs. Our property and outdoors team ensured our camp facilities and grounds were secure, safe, sanitized and welcoming–allowing our staff and member families the chance to escape reality and immerse themselves in nature therapy.

and encouraged the use of technology at Girl Scouts, these online experiences served as a channel for even deeper personal connection and kept girls engaged at a time when we remained “together but apart.” Our
endeavors offered every girl the chance to continue to take part in Girl Scouting on her own, with her family, with her troop or with her sisters in other states and even countries!
Family & Troop Camp Starting in September 2020, we opened our camps for Fall Family Retreats and Troop Camp programs and have promoted these offerings across our communication channels. Our members are so excited to get back together and enjoy quality time at the camp properties they love. One family who attended a recent retreat at Hoover wrote this to “Chainsaw,” Camp Director Becca Scheetz: “Chainsaw, Just wanted to say a huge thank you for making this weekend amazing. The kids all had a great time! This was actually our first family trip since Riley (the little one) was born
since Destiny was always at camp. Riley said he just wanted to stay there forever! I really do appreciate you again doing the extra fire and for getting the archery set up as well. It was truly a wonderful weekend, and it was nice taking them somewhere and feeling safe too! So again, huge thanks!!! Jennifer Tayler” It’s moments like this that make our programming and marketing/ communications efforts this year to bring a little bit of “normal” back to our membership during such a challenging time so worthwhile!

STEM Lab Opens At Amahami “We know that to be effective, STEM engagement needs to start early on. The Solar STEM Lab/Classroom continues our mission of building tomorrow’s leaders by preparing girls for STEM careers through their Girl Scout experience. The lab is not only a place to be creative and learn, but a space that feels ‘alive’ thanks to unique features showcasing how its green elements work. We’re grateful to the donors and community organizations that stepped up to make
this a reality for our girls and the greater Binghamton region,” - GSNYPENN CEO Julie Dale. Girl Scouts explore progressive, girl-led STEM activities at every level. The lab/ classroom allows our council to deliver even more programming. Features of the one-story building include a solar equipment viewing area with energy gauged in real-time and displayed on TV monitors; two “truth panels” that provide a behind-the-scenes look into the heated
floor, insulation, and wiring; and a (nonCOVID) capacity of 45 people. The building is self-sustaining for its electrical needs. Maximized solar panels installed on a standing seam metal roof are predicted to contribute substantially to energy needs of the entire camp property at a projected savings of $9,000 annually. Funding for the $300,000-plus project included gifts from four generous Girl Scout alums/families who wish to remain anonymous. The project was
also supported by grants from Robinson Broadhurst Foundation, United Way of Broome County, Community Foundation for South Central New York, Guthrie, IBM (in recognition of GSNYPENN Board Member Michael Sabo’s volunteer service and retirement from the company), P&G Fund of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, Rotary District 7170, Friends of Amahami and many individual donors. In-kind support was provided by SUNY Broome Community College, with students under the direction of Associate Professor and
Chair of Visual Communications Patricia Evans providing interior design concepts. Girl Scouts is committed to filling the STEM workforce pipeline and in 2019 launched the Girl Scout STEM Pledge, a multi-year initiative to put 2.5 million girls through our hands-on STEM programming by 2025. This new facility affords us the ability to help those endeavors.

Thanks to generous donors, the council presented a total of $12,000 in memory of three special Girl Scout sisters lost in 2019 who helped build girls of courage, confidence and character and who each made the world a better place. The Marie Hepworth Scholarship ($5,000) was presented to Adeline Whitmore.
Adeline Whitmore Barton, NY Take Action Project: The Nichols Veterans Memorial Park
Allyson Wieser Williamson, NY Take Action Project: Designing and Installing a Sensory Integration Pathway for Williamson Elementary School
Sydney Woods Baldwinsville, NY Take Action Project: A Salute to Fallen Veterans: A Gold Award Project
Ms. Hepworth dedicated her life to supporting girl development through her 20-plus years serving as executive director of
GSNYPENN legacy council Indian Hills and various volunteer activities in her community of Johnson City. The Kelly Perkins Scholarship ($4,000) was presented to Elizabeth Serafin. Ms. Perkins, a lifelong Girl Scout and GSNYPENN summer camp staff member, impacted the lives of campers and younger Girl Scouts in her community of Newark Valley. The Kerrie Black Scholarship ($3,000) was presented to Dorothy (Dora) Donacik. Ms. Black, a lifelong Girl Scout, was a GSNYPENN Regional Support Manager for Broome and Delaware counties who served her volunteers with excellence and was always willing to lend a hand to her colleagues.

Your Donation Makes A Difference Your support stays local and has a direct impact on the lives of GSNYPENN members across our footprint. Did you know a donation to our financial assistance fund helps cover the cost of opportunities like summer camp, annual membership, uniforms, patches and travel? We’re deeply appreciative of the annual support our council receives from corporations, foundations, individuals, community chests and the United Way. Thanks to gifts made from October 1, 2019, to September 30, 2020, we supported girls in more than 2,000 ways! 1,965 girls and 71 adult volunteers were given the gift of an annual membership—a $25 value. This allowed for new troops to form and more girls to participate in Girl Scout programming, no matter their financial burden. We also helped 152 troops with program supplies and assistance. Along with membership and program supplies, your donations also give girls the chance to attend camp. In a normal year, more than 150 camperships would be given. (*Due to COVID-19, all summer camps were canceled and therefore no camperships were awarded.)

Juliette Gordon Low National Society Through planned giving, you become part of the Juliette Gordon Low National Society. Please let us know, so that we can honor you with this beautiful Juliette Gordon Low Society pin. If you haven’t made a planned gift yet, it’s easy. You can leave any amount or percent of your life insurance or estate to Girl Scouts. A small bequest can make a huge difference in the future of our girls and young women! Membership in the society ensures that members stay connected to GSNYPENN now and in the future. GSUSA and Dianne Belk, Founding Chair of the Juliette Gordon Low National Society, raised a challenge back in 2018 for each Girl Scout council across the nation to acquire four planned gifts. In return, each council would receive a planned gift of $10,000 from Dianne Belk and Lawrence Calder. GSNYPENN accepted and met this challenge! Members: Elizabeth Brando, Nancy Calandra, Angela Carpenter Gildner, Katie Crowley, Judi Dixon, Mary & Brad Grainger, Karen Hegeman, Carleen Lattin, Ellen MacMaster, Yolanda Peterson, Michael & Betty Sabo, Jane Spellman. If you’re interested in joining our council’s society members, contact us to discuss your options. The process takes less than five minutes, but your gift helps girls develop leadership skills to last a lifetime! Reach out to our Development team at 1.855.213.8555 x2053.

GIRL SCOUTS GIVE BACK
From educating communities about food production and selling Treasury Bonds during WWI and the Spanish flu pandemic to planting victory gardens and training in first aid during WWII, Girl Scouts have always stepped up in times of need. The COVID-19 crisis is no different. All across our council, country
and world, Girl Scouts have leapt to the aid of others by engaging in wonderful acts of service and kindness. Today, tomorrow, together. We’ll get through this.

Girl Scout Promise
On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.
Girl Scout Law
I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.
