Dear Families: Your girl is starting a family business and you are on her Board of Directors. Your support will help her WOW the World during her cookie journey. The cookie program gives girls the opportunity to experience what it takes to set and meet goals, learn business ethics and people skills, make decisions and manage money. All of this wrapped up in a single box of cookies and the relationship that is built with your girl and her customers. Whether she is setting up her digital cookie website or designing posters for her booth she is gaining marketing skills that will last a lifetime. It is so rewarding when I see our top cookie sellers of the past pursuing careers in business because they got their start selling cookies as Daisy Girl Scouts. Over and over again I hear from parents “my daughter was so shy before she began her cookie journey”. I also hear things like my daughter understands how to manage money now and she understands why budgets are important. Another common remark is, it was wonderful to go with our troop as we delivered our gift of caring proceeds to the Hermitage Cat Shelter. Do you know that the cookie program allows girls to invest over $700,000 in our community. This year we are asking you to support girl’s success by reinforcing what she is learning as she builds her business. Encourage her to attend the Cookies Rally, Digital Cookie Day and Financial Literacy Badge Nights. You can enjoy these experiences side by side with your girl. Help her understand why she is participating in the program. Listen to her pitch. Cheer her on as she builds her website. Let her take the lead at her cookie booth. As your girl sets her goals for the program please help her understand the importance of Girl Scouts Give Back. The cookie program gives your family an opportunity to support our Heroes in the military and our first responders. Our Public Servants need our support and they love getting Girl Scout cookies especially with a personal note from you and your girl attached. Also your girl can decide with her troop how they will support the community with their cookie earning. Please talk with her about community issues that are important to you as a family. Help her do some research and visit organizations that she might like to support. These family activities will help your girl become a life-long community advocate for things she cares about. Let her know she can WOW the WORLD one box of cookies at time. I look forward to seeing you and your girl out and about during the cookie program.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Debbie Sisco Rich CEO, Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona

And for many of them, the cookie Program was a major learning event.

Former First Ladies of the United States Michelle Obama and Barbara Bush, news anchor Barbara Walters, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, labor leader Dolores Huerta, actress Carrie Fisher, and Mrs. Fields Cookies founder Debbi Fields are but a few of the long list of amazing women who took part in this longstanding tradition.

What are your hopes for your girl? Certainly, you want her to make good decisions, know how to manage money, and feel confident setting and reaching goals, like attending college. The Girl Scout Cookie Program helps her succeed today and prepares her for future success! The money raised will help your girl and her troopmates try new things, like travel, camping, and STEM, but the real experience is the program itself. As part of the world's largest girl-led business, your girl will develop the skills it takes to be a successful entrepreneur—like teamwork, planning, and money management—while also growing the confidence she needs to shine, no matter what path she chooses. You’re the key to making this happen—so keep reminding your girl about the 5 Cookie Skills (see left). Recognize milestones as she reaches them, and encourage her to share and reflect on her experiences with you as she learns and grows.

Safety Tips Do not enter.

Show you’re a Girl Scout.

Never enter someone’s home or vehicle when you are selling or making deliveries. Avoid selling to people in vehicles or going into alleys.

Wear uniforms, the Girl Scout membership pin and/or Girl Scout clothing to identify yourself as a Girl Scout.

Buddy up. Always use the buddy system. It’s not just safe, it’s more fun.

Be streetwise. Become familiar with the areas and neighborhoods where you will be selling Girl Scout Cookies.

Partner with adults. Adults must accompany Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors when they are taking orders, selling, or delivering cookies. Girls grades 6-12 must be supervised by an adult when selling door-to-door, and must never sell alone. Adults should be present at a cookie booth in any public place at all times.

Plan ahead. Always have a plan for safeguarding money, and avoid walking around with large amounts or keeping it at home or school. Give proceeds to supervising adults, who should return it to troop leaders. They will deposit it as directed by your Girl Scout council as soon as possible.

10

7 8 9

Be Netwise. Take the GSUSA Internet Safety Pledge before going online, and follow the specific guidelines related to marketing online (see page 14). Girl Scouts cannot collect money online.

Be safe on the road. Always follow safe pedestrian practices, especially when crossing at intersections or walking along roadways. Be aware of traffic when unloading passengers and cookie boxes from vehicles.

Protect privacy. Girls’ names, addresses, or email addresses should never be given out to customers. Use a troop contact number or address overseen by an adult for customers to request information, re-order, or give comments. Protect customer privacy by not sharing their information. Girls should never take credit card numbers.

COOKIE BOSS 101: SELLING STRATEGIES. Try these awesome tips from real Girl Scout cookie sellers: Cookie Boss Tip #1: Load up a wagon with cookies, make signs, and head out on a neighborhood walkabout!

Door-to-Door Sales Leave no doorbell unrung! We encourage you to visit friends, family, and neighbors to make sales. The number one reason people say they didn’t buy Girl Scout Cookies last year? They were never asked!

Cookie Boss Tip #2: Bring along some printed door hangers or letters to leave if folks are out. Make sure to include your Digital Cookie URL! Important Note: Please do not bring a wagon to the University of Arizona campus, through the Gem Show, or through city parks during sporting events. Per Arizona law, you can be fined for doing so.

Cookie Boss Tip #3: Try a text-a-thon! Let friends and family know it’s cookie time and ask for orders.

Telephone Sales It’s fast and easy to sell Girl Scout Cookies by phone.

Cookie Boss Tip #4: Once cookies have been delivered, reach out to thank your customers—and ask if they need to re-stock!

Workplace Sales Ask business owners or managers for permission to sell cookies at a workplace. Remember, even if an adult helps make the connection, it is always a girl’s responsibility to fill all orders, oversee their delivery, and thank her customers!

Cookie Boss Tip #5: Make a quick sales pitch at a staff meeting! Cookie Boss Tip #6: Leave an order card in a visible spot, along with a note from your troop outlining your goals and plans for the cookie proceeds. (Remember not to list girls’ last names, phone numbers, or email addresses.)

11

Cookie Booth SA L E S At cookie booths, troops have the opportunity to reach customers directly in high-traffic areas like grocery stores, gas stations, and retail stores. Make the most of your booth sales by participating in our 2020 cookie contests! (See page 18 for more info.) Remember, you represent all Girl Scouts! Wear your uniform, and be on your best Girl Scout behavior! Cookie Boss Tip #7: Always follow the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Be polite to customers, show off your 5 Skills, and stay engaged! After all, if you are not enthusiastic about your product, who will be? Cookie Boss Tip #8: Check-in with store managers at your booth locations, and follow store instructions. Selling in front of local businesses is a privilege and you want to be able to return next year! Cookie Boss Tip #9: Find loads more tips for booth strategies, etiquette, and success, including how to respond to impromptu “What If?” scenarios, at www.girlscoutssoaz.org/cookieresources. In the spirit of sisterhood, Girl Scout Councils always respect council boundaries. All public sales must be within GSSoAZ’s council jurisdiction.

12

Cookie Booth BA S I C S Booth Schedule Booths are scheduled Monday through Friday, 4:00pm to 7:00pm; and Saturday and Sunday, 8:00am to 8:00pm. No selling is allowed after 8:00pm, regardless of girls’ ages or levels! How To Sign Up Your troop leader will sign up for booths in advance and will share dates and locations with families once booths are scheduled. Lemonade Stands Want to set up a booth in your front yard? Go for it! These are called “lemonade stands.” If no other Girl Scouts are present, you do not require a chaperone besides your parent or caregiver. MySales Booths Want to set up a booth at a business NOT on the council list? These are called “MySales” booths. Talk to your Troop Cookie Manager first, so they can make sure council did not already approach the business. Safety First! Booth Rules & Regulations Daisies through Cadettes require at least TWO adult chaperones. Seniors and Ambassadors require just one adult chaperone. All adult chaperones must pass a background check, and at least one chaperone must be a registered member of Girl Scouts. If just one Girl Scout is present, only one chaperone is required, which may be her parent or guardian. No more than four girls at a time should sell at a booth. Siblings, friends, and pets are NOT permitted to hang out at booths. Girls may not sell cookies at locations where they are not old enough to be a patron. For more information, and to sign up to support your girl’s troop as a booth chaperone, visit www.girlscoutssoaz.org/boothsupport. Individual sellers may contact the Cookie Team to discuss booth opportunities.

ONLINE COOKIE SALES DO’S & DON’TS

The Internet is a wonderful tool! It allows us to connect with others and promote our amazing entrepreneurship program further than ever before. To ensure these online resources are used in a safe and fair manner, all girls and their families must follow Girl Scouts USA’s guidelines regarding online Cookie Program sales.

Digital Cookie is the ONLY approved platform for accepting Girl Scout Cookie money online. You may not use any additional online payment platforms. Digital Cookie links should never be posted publicly where it can reach people a girl does not know in real life. This ensures a safe, secure, and protected online environment for girls to sell cookies. Friends and family of a girl participating in the cookie program must not market or share a girl’s contact information, sales links, or sales information on public-facing online sites. Digital Cookie links may NOT be posted in any online forum, including but not limited to NextDoor, Facebook Marketplace, Facebook groups, Craigslist, garage sale pages, swap meet pages, or other public-facing online sites. Girl Scout Cookies may NOT be sold on Amazon, eBay, Craigslist, Etsy, Facebook Marketplace, or any other online marketplaces besides Digital Cookie.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program is a girl-led program. Online marketing and sales should always be led by a girl, with supervision by her parents or guardians. For cookie entrepreneurs ages 13 and up, social media platforms are a great place to promote cookie season! Girls should only use accounts set to “private.” Caregivers may share on social media that their girl is selling cookies, and make the connection between interested friends and family and their Girl Scout, but remember: girls should be building their skills and making the sale themselves!

Girl Scouts G I V E BAC K Making a World of Difference... One Cookie at a Time.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program also provides girls with lifelong lessons in philanthropy! Girl Scouts across the country use Girl Scout Cookies and their proceeds to show their appreciation for men and women in uniform and to support those in need.

Cookies For Our Heroes To widen our girls’ reach in the community, Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona is expanding the Cookies for Military program to become Cookies for Our Heroes, supporting first responders in law enforcement and firefighting as well as our brave women and men serving overseas with delicious boxes of Girl Scout Cookies. All Girl Scout cookie sellers can participate by collecting money for Cookies for Our Heroes as they would for a regular box of cookies. However, this is a “virtual” donation— cookies do NOT come of your troop’s (or your girl’s) inventory. Girls are encouraged to promote Cookies for Our Heroes with a collection box, cookie box wrap, or signage. Find these resources and more at www.girlscoutssoaz.org/cookieresources. The Mission Military patch program gives girls the opportunity to reflect on and honor our armed forces by learning about military service and history. Learn more at www.girlscoutssoaz.org/cfoh.

Uniform-to-Uniform The Uniform-to-Uniform program gives girls the opportunity to invite local uniformed police officers and firefighters to visit Girl Scouts at their cookie booths. Girls can learn more about the work these amazing women and men do for our communities! Show Us How You Care! Share Your Troop’s Story Every year Girl Scouts all over Southern Arizona use their cookie earnings to do amazing things. Help us spread the word across our council (and the country!) about the amazing impact Girl Scout cookie sellers make on our community. Share your girl’s Gift of Caring project at www.girlscoutssoaz.org/shareyourstory to see her and her troop featured on our social media, website, or even in the news!

Gifts of Caring The Gift of Caring program is a nationwide community service project where Girl Scout troops decide on a charitable organization that they would like to support with cookies or donations. Girls may choose to donate physical boxes of cookies to food banks, homeless shelters, and senior citizens’ homes, and other local organizations. Or, girls may choose to use a portion of their cookie proceeds to provide local organizations with goods or resources. For example, stocking animal shelters with cat and dog food, purchasing paint to refurbish a local non-profit’s 17 playground, or providing children’s books to a youth literacy organization.

Cookie Season C ON T E S T S Don’t miss out on these fun and creative ways to participate in the Cookie Program!

Wow The World Contest (January 18 - March 1) Show us how you’re wowing the world this cookie season! We invite all Girl Scouts in Southern Arizona to snap a selfie that shows you putting one of the 5 Cookie Skills into action. Submit it at www.girlscoutssoaz.org/shareyourstory for a chance to win big! Goal Setting: Girls set both short-term (daily or weekly) and long term sales goals and make a plan of action to accomplish them: Decision Making: Girls call the shots! They decide how many cookies to sell, when and where to sell, how to market their business, and what to do with their earnings. Money Management: Girls develop a budget, take cookie orders, handle customers’ money, learn about philanthropy, and track troop income and expenses. People Skills: Girls learn how to talk (and listen!) to their customers and each other as they work together towards a common goal. Business Ethics: Girls act honestly and responsibly during every step of the Cookie Program, from managing their inventory and handling money, to be being clear and honest with customers Grand Prize: 5 wow-worthy winners (one for every skill!) will be selected to appear on the cover of next year’s Family Cookie Guide (yep, this same guide you’re holding in your hands right now!).

Fly High Booth Contest (January 18 - March 1) Encourage your troop to go all-in on cookie booths this year! When 75% of your troop’s cookie sellers each participate in 3 council-scheduled cookie booths, the troop will automatically be entered into the grand prize drawing. Grand Prize: One go-getting troop will be randomly drawn to win a free ziplining adventure! Level up! For more chances to send your troop flying high, sign up for additional booths. Each time 75% of your cookie sellers each participate in 4, 5, or more booths, your troop will receive another entry into the drawing for the grand prize. Important Note: Remember, no more than 4 girls may sell at a booth at a time.

Late-Breaking Cookie Contest - Dates TBD!
