ove THE YEAR OF

LOVE FOR girls. LOVE FOR school. LOVE FOR each other . ALUMNAE WEEKEND 2017

ALUMNAE WEEKEND is an opportunity to remember and reminisce about your time at GPS and its impact on your life. It’s a time to share your stories with classmates and explore the school’s campus as it is today. This year there is more in store than ever before with the addition of the Notable and Rising Notable Alumnae Awards. We hope you are making plans to attend. The weekend won’t be complete without you! THE YEAR OF LOVE Message from Dr. Autumn A. Graves This past summer, I became overwhelmed by the devastating events unfolding around the globe. The sadness that pervaded the news seemed almost too much to bear. As I processed headline after headline, I realized that our world is lacking something so important – so basic. I wondered if we as humans had forgotten how to love--or if we had not been taught how to truly love. I believe this is the chief struggle. It is not that bad things happen. It is that when bad things happen, our reflex is not to really, deeply love. So I made the decision for LOVE to be the overarching theme by which the GPS community would strive to live this year. I assured the girls that this might be difficult. It may stretch us. It may cost us everything. But we will learn to love well and in so doing, we will change our school, our community, and, we hope, our world. In keeping with the 2016-2017 school year theme “Year of Love,” the theme for Alumnae Weekend focuses on “Love for the girls. Love for the school. Love for each other.” I hope you will join us in celebrating GPS’s “Year of Love” and experience it in a palpable way during your time at Alumnae Weekend.

HALL OF FAME

Each year, GPS recognizes a select number of alumnae for their outstanding accomplishments in and contributions to athletics while at GPS and beyond. In keeping with the school’s tradition of athletic excellence, we induct into the Athletic Hall of Fame worthy alumnae role models that younger athletes may choose to emulate.

FACULTY emer iti SATURDAY, APRIL 22 AT 10:45 A.M . Faculty Emeriti Inductions – Caldwell Commons Honoring retiring teachers Linda Mines and Anne Exum for their exemplary teaching, professional accomplishments, and service to GPS. All are invited to celebrate with us!

LINDA MINES Chairman of the History and Social Sciences Department, Linda Moss Mines has inspired GPS girls to learn more about their world for 27 years at GPS through classes such as the Modern Presidency and Global Conflicts. Currently the faculty advisor for the school’s Partnerships in the Community (PIC), she has been instrumental in encouraging student involvement in area non-profits. In 2016, she was the recipient of the Tennessee Association of Independent School’s Hubert Smothers Excellence in Teaching Award and most recently was named by the American Lung Association of Chattanooga as a Woman of Distinction.

ANNE EXUM English faculty, PR Coordinator, Director of Communications, and now Senior Writer, Anne Exum has been teaching writing and grammar or editing the school’s publications for 30 years.
