A Thank You: My message this year is a simple “Thank You” for believing in us and supporting us. At a time when we are working hard to control tuition and to find efficiencies in our operation of GPS, it was incredibly encouraging to see the 2010-11 Annual Fund surpass its goal by over 7%. Please know we will be good stewards of your support by offering our girls the best education possible and, in return, expecting the best of them. The Founders believed a GPS education was an invaluable gift to their girls. Because of you we continue to provide the Founders’ gift to 600 Chattanooga area young women – young women who will make a difference in their families, communities and country.

Annual Fund

Hooray for the great GPS! The 2010-2011 GPS Annual Fund embarked on a bold, new strategy, with our ultimate goal over the next four to five years to reach and sustain this vital fund to the $1 million benchmark and beyond. I am pleased to say we are well on the way as total dollars raised surpassed the goal by $50,000 - a 6.5% increase over last year! A big thank you is extended to each of you loyal and dedicated GPS Trustees, alumnae, parents, grandparents, parents of alumnae, faculty, and friends listed in this report! I also thank the awesome staff and marvelous volunteer leadership team who brilliantly executed the charge from the Board of Trustees and administration to elevate the focus of the Annual Fund. While we can look at many successes of this past year – 100% faculty participation and a strong reunion giving program to name a few – it was the new focus on the 1906 Giving Society (the top giving society to the Annual Fund) which fueled the overall success. We saw a 31% increase among these 109 donors compared to the year before, and 66% of the total dollars raised derived from donors to this giving society. In tandem with the financial accomplishments was the great community building events among these donors where student and teacher alike shared her story of what makes GPS such a great school. Now I say... let’s seize this wonderful opportunity and build on this success! Everyone involved plus new folks, too - from the $10 donor to the $25,000 contributor - will want to participate again and continue the momentum. Make your annual gift to GPS a priority for this great school... especially as Keith Sanford takes the helm for 2011-2012! We are so fortunate to have his leadership. I look forward to working for him, along with the staff and wonderful leadership team!

What GPS Means to Me: By David Cook

Teaching here for the last eight years has become like a gift larger than I could have asked for or imagined. A thousand stories I could tell to explain what this school means to me:

• Of students so honest, inspiring and courageous it seems they teach me more than I teach them.

• Of colleagues generous like family and intellectually gutsy like the best teachers always are.

• Of facilities beautiful and administrators both professional and loyal.

• Most importantly, of the grand moments in the classrooms when it seemed we all levitated, lifted upward by a thought or idea or discussion much bigger than any of us.

But instead of a thousand stories, I want to offer only one. It’s about Jane Henegar. For years, Jane has been asking her students the right kind of questions, realizing that questions often matter more than the answers. One of her favorite questions is so powerful we could all benefit from answering it.

Who are you? For years, she has asked her students to draft out an answer to that question, and not long ago, Jane found a collection of half-forgotten written answers in her classroom drawers. She did just what you’d expect her to do: taking out her blue calligraphy pen, she handwrote a personal note to each student, bought some envelopes and began mailing these “Who am I?” responses out to alum mailboxes near and far. Imagine receiving this long-lost homework assignment 5, 10 or 15 years after you first turned it in. It’s like an echo long in returning or an old friend that’s come out of hiding, and this story best represents what I love about GPS. All the elements of the GPS education are present in this story. Imagine being asked by a teacher one of the most telling questions of all: who are you? GPS asks this in a multitude of ways, and allows students to answer with their own voice. There is no wrong answer to this question. The only wrong is when this question goes unasked – and unanswered. And to me, that’s what it means to teach here. To be surrounded by enlightened colleagues, hard questions, and gutsy students that seem more like gardens than multiple-choice tests. What Jane did is what we all try to do: to leave a trace, an imprint of sorts, that appears out of nowhere at times, like a letter in your mailbox that says: You are not forgotten. Who you are matters. David is a member of the GPS faculty. He was the only Tennessean to be awarded the prestigious Marshall Memorial fellowship for 2011 and spent 24 days this past summer traveling to Europe to study political, economic, and social issues. He and his wife, Weesie Glendenning Cook ’95, have two children. He is pictured with his daughter.
