THAT INFIDEL PLACE From its foundation in 1869 as the UK’s first residential higher education institution for women, Girton College has been at the forefront of widening participation. Its foundational aim has been extended in recent years to ensure that all who have sufficient ability and potential to secure a place can do so, irrespective of who they are, where they come from, or what their pathway to university has been. Today, Girton is a co-educational college, split 50:50 female to male. Nearly a quarter of its 500 or so undergraduates, and nearly 40% of its 250 graduate students, are from outside
the UK. Its students are drawn from more than 30 countries worldwide, and it has a very diverse Fellowship. Girton is the only College to be led by a Mistress, regardless of gender! For nearly 150 years, Girton has offered access to the University of Cambridge for those who are academically excellent, who take their social responsibilities seriously, and who go on to make a difference in the world. It’s a wonderful place to learn to think independently, to develop lifelong values and ethics, and to prepare for the world of work. I know: it was my time at Girton which brought me to where I am today.

Our goal is to encourage talented and enthusiastic students from all walks of life to join the educational adventure that is Girton College. We aim to provide a world-class learning environment, with exceptional support for students, who have myriad opportunities to achieve their highest potential. Many go on to do extraordinary things, often for the direct benefit of society.
campaign is to raise £50 million to grow the permanent endowment capital to underpin the long-term financial sustainability of the College. Six years on, halfway into our 12-year campaign, we have reached half of our total. £25 million has been raised from donations and pledges of gifts in Wills, thanks to the generosity of more than 1,200 alumni and friends..
In November 1867, George Eliot wrote to Girton’s founder, Emily Davies, about the importance of establishing an institution that is “capable of transforming lives and changing the world”. That, she believed, would demand “A Great Campaign”, which then, as now, would be anchored on philanthropy.
This report details the significant difference that your gifts have made to Girton and to the lives of our students. As we move into the second phase of the Campaign, which includes the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the College, I look forward to welcoming you back for the celebrations in 2019, and to thanking you for your outstanding support.

A Great Campaign aims to raise £50 million to secure the long-term financial sustainability of Girton College In the first phase of A Great Campaign (2010– 2016), with your support, Girton has been able to prioritise: Aim 1. Aim 2.
Growing the unrestricted permanent endowment capital to secure the future of a College that values excellence and inclusivity. Safeguarding Girton’s uniquely supportive research- infused learning environment across all subjects, by underwriting six College Fellowships in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
Your gifts have also helped the College: Aim 3. Aim 4. a.
To build an award-winning, environmentally sustainable new wing of undergraduate accommodation. To position sports, arts, study and social skills at the centre of a rounded higher educational experience by enlarging the range and improving the standard of some of the best on-site sports facilities in Cambridge, whilst preserving 53 acres of heritage gardens and grounds. b. establishing a visionary new Artist Residency.
In the next 150th Anniversary Phase of A Great Campaign (2016–2022), Girton plans to: 1.
2. 3. 4.
5. 4 | Girton College Making the Difference
Continue to grow the permanent endowment capital, providing financial flexibility in uncertain times for a radical institution with an uncompromising quest for excellence in diversity. Enable the widest possible range of talented students to achieve their full potential by growing the funds for undergraduate bursaries. Secure the future of the bespoke education that is our USP by funding College Fellowship positions in Science, Clinical and Veterinary Medicine, and Music. Develop the Graduate School by a. providing new en-suite accommodation and facilities in a purpose-built complex forming part of the University’s exciting urban-academic development in North West Cambridge. b. endowing a suite of graduate scholarships to enable Girton to attract the best students internationally and from the UK. Support the choir and a growing array of instrumental ensembles.
AIM 1 Growing the endowment capital to ensure a sustainable future The College’s permanent endowment – at around one third of the Cambridge average on a per student basis – is insufficient to bridge the gap between income from fees, charges and rents, and expenditure on essential educational services. That’s where philanthropy comes in! To keep Girton at the centre of the global education stage, A Great Campaign aims to grow the permanent endowment capital to a sustainable size. This will allow the College to plan ahead, and will give Girton the flexibility it needs to thrive in uncertain times. At the halfway point of A Great Campaign, in June 2016, £12.3 million had been donated to the permanent endowment as part of A Great Campaign, both for unrestricted and restricted purposes. The spendable income from this fund – £500,000 at today’s prices – is available in perpetuity to support Girton’s strategic goals, cementing the future of this remarkable, radical, educational adventure. Gifts in Wills Legacy gifts have had a transformational impact on A Great Campaign. This is already apparent from bequests and In Memoriam donations received, which have helped to endow four of the six Fellowships in teaching and research. Imagine, then, what the further £13 million (which has been committed by our supporters collectively in their Wills) will achieve, especially if we can double that pledge in the next few years.

AIM 2 Teaching and Research Fellowships Our mission is to benefit society through the pursuit of excellence in teaching and research. The ability to attract and retain world-class scholars, committed to both teaching and research, is key to delivering transformative teaching in a multi-disciplinary setting. Our permanent official Fellowship provides our undergraduates with the bespoke learning experience that is the hallmark of the University, and these scholars direct the research-active teaching teams that include postdoctoral and postgraduate students. £10 million was raised to endow in perpetuity six College Fellowships in English, History, Mathematics, Modern and Medieval Languages, Economics, and Law.
Dr Stuart Davis BA, MPhil, PhD Jean Sybil Dannatt Official Fellow in Modern and Medieval Languages “Life as a College Teaching Officer is never dull; one day teaching amazing texts and films, the next translation, another day working alongside colleagues in committees, and then the following immersing myself in my research.” 6 | Girton College Making the Difference
Dr Clive Lawson MA, PhD Frank Wilkinson Official Fellow in Economics, Director of Studies in Economics “Economics has remained at the top of the Baxter Tables within College for the last five years. Part of this performance is due to the fact that we have, possibly for the first time since I’ve been at Girton, had enough resources to teach the course as we would like to.”
Dr Sinéad M Garrigan Mattar BA, DPhil Jane Elizabeth Martin Official Fellow in English, Director of Studies in English “Girton English is thriving, and the past year has been a successful and an exciting one. We are full of hopeful anticipation for the future, and we are committed to developing outreach and widening-participation activities to ensure that the very brightest come to Girton to study English.”
Dr Stelios Tofaris MA, PhD
Dr Ross Lawther MA, PhD Olga Taussky Official Fellow in Mathematics, Director of Studies in Mathematics “The Cambridge Mathematics degree is widely regarded as the most demanding in the country; the personalised support afforded by the Cambridge supervision system is indispensable in rendering it accessible to the number of students who successfully take it each year. This system is the envy of other universities, but does not come cheap.”
Barrister (Inner Temple), Brenda Hale Official Fellow in Law, Director of Studies in Law (Part 1B and II) “I am proud to be the Brenda Hale Fellow in Law at Girton College. Lady Hale’s achievements and well-known commitment to young lawyers are a constant source of inspiration. At the same time, I am immensely grateful for being afforded this opportunity through generous donations. These have enabled me to continue to work towards making the law more accessible to students and the wider public, and towards contributing to the improvement of the law in order to better serve the needs of our society.”
Dr Benjamin J Griffin MA, PhD Marilyn Strathern Official Fellow in History, Director of Studies in History “Girton’s History undergraduates have enjoyed great success in recent years, and the essential condition for that success has been the college’s ability to provide teaching from within its own fellowship. For that reason, gifts of funding for teaching have been vital in enabling us to preserve the highest academic standards. In a challenging climate, the endowment of a College Teaching Officer post has allowed us to secure the services of the best supervisors for our students, and to offer a supportive environment in which students can continue to excel.”
AIM 3 An award-winning new wing at Ash Court for undergraduate accommodation In October 2013, College opened a new £8.5 million wing to enclose Ash Court, the largest expansion of its buildings in 40 years, with a contribution from philanthropic gifts. The new building provides 50 en-suite study bedrooms over three storeys, all of which are wheelchair accessible, overlooking splendid views of the courtyard, pond and orchard. The wing also includes six rooms which are specially adapted to disabled users, six new kitchens, a laundry and a leisure hub, as well as a lift to all floors. Two key themes define Ash Court:
1
Firstly, the project is one of the most energy-efficient student accommodation buildings in the UK, providing half of the onsite energy requirements from renewable sources including photovoltaic panels on the roof, and a remarkably low air leakage rate. In addition to an Excellent BREEAM rating for its ecological features, it has also won several awards including from RIBA East, Green Apple Environmental Award, South Cambridgeshire Building Control Award, and the Schueco Award for Sustainability.
2
Secondly, the design makes a gesture to the neighbouring historic buildings, reinforcing Girton’s distinctive Victorian architecture, with its Grade II listed red brick buildings around courtyard gardens. Ash Courtyard garden – an entirely new outdoor space with seating and benches has also been created.
Ash Court underlines Girton’s historic commitment to providing an all-round residential educational experience set in a landscape with facilities that create unique spaces for reflection, as well as opening up the high-end conferencing market to enable College to generate additional revenues during the summer.

New on-site sports facilities The College values sport for women and men as a means by which students from diverse backgrounds can work together in teams or compete individually to develop skills that complement their studies and to learn the value of work-life balance. Participation in sport can nurture leadership and encourage teamwork – qualities that are often highly sought after by employers. Our sporting scholars are also ambassadors for the College; we are proud to report a succession of Blues who have joined University teams in women’s and men’s rowing, football, rugby and hockey, among many other sports. To complement the existing full-size rugby, cricket and football outdoor pitches, A Great Campaign has secured a range of new and refurbished sporting facilities including:
Indoor swimming pool
Multi-gym and ergo
The College’s much-loved swimming pool needed rebuilding from the foundations upwards. Necessary for structural and environmental reasons, this provided a better heating system as well as improved access and modern changing facilities. It is the only indoor pool in a Cambridge College. The pool is used regularly – not only by students, Fellows and staff, but also by local swimming groups and classes, and conference guests.
Leading from the long colonnade, which extends Cloister Corridor, is Girton’s new multi-gym and ergo room. Offering a training facility for all sports, not just field sports and rowing, it is well used by members of College, and will be of permanent benefit to future generations of students.

The Grassie Squash Court The existing squash court was retained rather than rebuilt, although the north gable of the existing building was reconstructed to link to Ash Court. The walls are now clad with a timber trellis and planted with climbers to complement the Ash Courtyard garden.

Girton hosted its first University Blues cricket match now that the grounds and John Marks Sports Pavilion provide first-class facilities
The sports pavilion was named in honour of Dr John Marks (1924–2016) and incorporates home and away changing rooms, bathrooms and showers. It is ecologically friendly, has full disabled access and looks out onto the cricket pitch. A new social area has been created for spectators and for players’ use, which is also widely used for outside events and conferences.
Engaging with the Arts Girton recognises that a rounded higher educational experience includes – but is simultaneously more than – excellence in an academic discipline. It is about all-round personal and social development, and this includes engaging with art and artists, being shaped and challenged by their methods, approaches and ways of knowing. This engagement is deepened by the College environment – ranging from the artwork that is encountered in the College corridors and the grounds, and the museum collections housed in the Lawrence Room, to the rare books and historical material preserved in the Duke Building repository.
Artist-in-Residence Scheme Our Artist-in-Residence scheme was inaugurated in 2013, enabling a pioneering contemporary artist working across different media to be resident in College for up to a year, interacting with the student communities and culminating in an exhibition of work infused by their residency at Girton. Each artist is selected by College from nominations put forward by a panel of recognised artists, art journalists and curators and, so far, three artists have been in residence: 2013–14 Colden Drystone Colden Drystone with Hannah Barry Gallery – coldendrystone.tumblr.com 2014–15

A Great Campaign: financial overview Girton College took a decision six years ago to play a long game to win financial sustainability. Hence the aim of A Great Campaign is to grow the College’s permanent endowment, both from unrestricted donations and from donations restricted to core areas of College’s educational mission, such as student support, teaching and world-leading research. This was because Girton’s endowment capital generated insufficient investment income to support the College’s ambitious and pioneering plans – 62% of Colleges have a higher endowment and investment per student. There is a significant gap between the College’s overall income and expenditure. This is partly due to the shortfall between the income received from undergraduate fees and the expenditure required to educate our students. This reflects the fact that academic fee income for home students is externally constrained by the UK Government,
and does not cover the cost of the small group teaching, intensive tutorial support and activities which add value to all-round personal development. Additionally, income from students’ and members’ rents and charges does not cover the cost of delivering the residential and catering services that are an integral part of a Cambridge education. Investment income is required to bridge this gap but this depends on Girton substantially increasing its permanent endowment. The aim of A Great Campaign is to raise £50 million from donations, bequests and legacy pledges of the living which, when received, will be invested in the permanent endowment capital, and create an income stream in perpetuity. Over the longer-term, if we raise this target, it will generate an uplift in income of up to £2 million per year, every year, helping to transform the College’s financial position. Thank you to everyone for your support.
