Message from Minister for Sports, Health, Youth & Culture I am thrilled to welcome participants at the 2014 Inter-secondary Track and Field Championships. Over these three exciting days of competition, we will celebrate the sporting achievements of our young men and women, as they pursue the champion’s laurel crown. This annual meet is much-anticipated by teens and teachers alike. It serves as a critical indicator of talent to coaches, and facilitates the further development of young sportspersons across our Islands. Interacting with each other in this setting does much to encourage friendships and positive peer relationships among the youth that make up the “Millennial Generation”. As you enjoy the competitive atmosphere of this inter-mural event, I expect that you will exhibit good sportsmanship and respect for all involved. I also look forward to hearing the results of your efforts. It is a given that physical activity offers much to benefit young people’s health, as well as their mental and social growth. In addition it allows them to demonstrate and express pride in their school and community. I implore you to hold fast to these concepts, and to always strive to apply them in your wider lives. Equally important are the academic opportunities and benefits that sport offers athletes. At home, in school and abroad, the discipline and commitment of these young people demonstrates to everyone, that the youth of today are still on the right track. From a policy perspective, government introduced the Cayman Islands National Sports Policy and Strategic Plan last year, and we have committed to all aspects of its recommendations – from the recent upgrades of this central facility, to the realisation of sports-tourism opportunities. These measures should facilitate the Cayman Islands’ continued prominence at the regional and international levels. Today, there are also many people to thank. As this is the fourth year of cosponsorship by Maples and Dart Cayman Islands, we are especially grateful to them for investing in our rising stars. I similarly thank the Department of Sports, the Cayman Islands Athletic Association and the many volunteers, coaches, teachers and parents who make this event possible. Have a rewarding, safe and enjoyable event. God bless, and have a great time!
Hon. Osbourne Bodden Minister for Sports, Health, Youth & Culture 2
Message from Minister for Education, Employment & Gender Affairs Sports are an integral part of almost every society in the world, including the Cayman Islands. Many of us either play a sport or watch sports. Playing sports and being involved in sports has a very positive influence on a person’s life. You learn how to be committed, how to work hard to achieve your goals and how to be a team player. It is important for us to encourage our children to play sports and stay active, especially as childhood obesity has become a serious health issue here in the Cayman Islands. Through national events such as this, it shows the government’s commitment to sports and to providing opportunities for our students to have fun. Being involved in sports also has a positive influence on children’s academic progress through the discipline it teaches them. Keeping fit and healthy help children to perform better in school. Sports can also lead to great academic opportunities, as many schools scout for new talent and many high schools and colleges will accept students based on their athletic performance. The Ministry responsible for Education is in full support of all students living active, healthy lives and taking part in sports wherever possible. The Ministry is also supportive of events, such as this, which promote healthy competition and interaction between all secondary schools and students in the country. The Inter-Secondary Track & Field Championship provides a great opportunity for students to showcase their talents and test their abilities. The Ministry is committed to helping to provide this opportunity to our secondary students in both government and private high schools. I am truly delighted to attend this event and thank all involved for organising it. I would also like to wish all the athletes here today every success in your competitions and to remind you, that the most important thing is to try your best in all that you do.
Hon. Tara Rivers, JP Minister for Education, Employment & Gender Affairs

Message from The Cayman Islands Athletic Association President National Inter-secondary Championship Competition Sports is a vehicle through which Education, Social Integration, Competition and Friendship can be achieved. I therefore encourage all participants to see sports in this light and take advantage of all the opportunities that sports allows for selfimprovement and advancement. I am certain that some of you will win and some others will enjoy the game and at the end we all will leave the stadium knowing that you have done the best to make your parents proud, your school name shine and yourself better off for having participated. Good luck to each participant and I wish for you all a safe and enjoyable championship. DR. DALTON WATLER-LYONS, GMM
