Professional experience

Jan 2012 current

architect at NL Architects Experience in projects ranging from architectural design to interior design, from the conceptual design to design development, up to interior construction drawings. As an intern I got involved both in international competitions and commissions, joining all the stages of the design, but developing particular skills in the presentation phase, in particolar in the production of visualizations. Over the years - as I got further with the knowledge of the dutch language - my field of action shifted more and more towards commissions. The recent years were particularly crucial in my professional development, getting the opportunity to work on a big public building with an increasing degree of responsability, and in particular in the interior design, which sparkled a special interest that I would like to investigate in the coming years.

Main projects:

Groninger Forum, cultural facility in Groningen _ commission Check of working drawings (supporting role), studies for the concept of the interior design of the whole building (supporting role), interior design of the auditorium and the entrance desk (main responsible)

The design of the Groninger Forum was assigned to NL Architects through an invited competition in 2007. Throughout the years the project survived several crises, such as a referendum to promote the cancellation of the building and a recalculation of the structure due to a new earthquake risk in the area of Groningen. At the moment the building is finally under construction. NL Architects and ABT review the construction drawings. My role in the project: review of the working drawings.

The auditorium of the Groninger Forum consists of a multifunctional room that will be used for different events, such as lectures, concerts, markets, dinners, theater plays and movies. An all-round projection system will be the special feature that can bring any possible scenario into the space. The challenge is to make the space flexible enough to be able to switch from a black box into a white box in order to serve such a big variety of functions. My role in the project: main responsible of the design, from concept design to execution drawings.

The auditorium foyer features a double height space - The images in these pages are just meant as a sample dominated by the spiral stair coming up from the ground to show the way I usually approach the design in NL Architects: using renders as a tool to carry on our floor, and materialized as a treasure cabinet in its studies, in order to understand better the spaciality all - round bamboo cladding - and a lower space, where and the materiality of our ideas, but also to have a the concrete structural walls of the facade will show their common, visual ground for discussion in the team. My role in the project: main responsible for the design presence. Amongst others, we got the assignment to of the auditorium foyer, co-designer of the entrance design the main entrance desk, which is still fully ongoing. desk.

Back in 2014 NL Architects pitched for the interior design of the Groninger Forum. In the design of the building the atrium is seen as a vertical version of the interstitial public space that the urban tissue of cities is made of: a series of squares, vertically stacked and reachable by a continuum of escalators. Behind, in the so called “chunks“, the ticketable functions such as cinema, auditorium, museum - intuitively take place in the enclosed spaces of the building.

Our proposal for the interior desing goes hand in hand with this concept and materializes the atrium as a neutral frame where the program - which is usually a preview of what happens in the “chunks“- takes the shape of loose objects, while the enclosed spaces will be much more expressive and materialized in an overwhelming way, so to generate a total experience. My role in the project: support by the concept design and visuals.

This housing block is located in the most prominent position of the redevelopped, former industrial area De nieuwe stad, in Amersfoort, and is meant to work as a billboard for the urban project. Our proposal aims to make the industrial vocation of the area immediatly recognizable through the materialization - bare concrete - and the compositional language elaborated by studying archetypical industrial typologies. My role in the project: main responsible for the concept and preliminary design.

The competition was intitiated by a neighborhood campaign, that, after the eviction of the tennants of the plot in 2013, promoted their return on the same site, and collected their inputs through a participative design process. Our proposal is to divide the assigned plot of land into smaller parcels, so to guaranty diversity, and to organize them around a new pedestrian street, creating new room for activity. The rooftops get activated as well and form a landscape of public space on a higher level. My role in the project: concept studies, visuals

Following up the competition won in 2015, the team of NL Architects and BeL gets to compete again for the assignment of the single buildings. The Lüttich is a housing block dedicated to the young professionals. Particular attention is reserved to the relation with the street level: the big, sculptural canopy formed by the bowwindowed Wintergärten, and the insertion of a kiosk at the ground level, revives the role of the former Esso gas station as one of the main meeting points for the locals. My role in the project: designer of the housing block

This new cultural facility in the Hague hosts four cultural institutions, each one with its own venue and enclosed program: we propose to organize this program as a ring around the venues, to get the maximum grade of transparency in the facade. The groundfloor and first floor, dedicated to the public program, takes the shape of an articulated landscape made of height differences, voids and a stepped open theater, where the halls appear as floating or landing volumes.

The facade configurates itself as an open curtain, evoking the red curtains of theaters, and inviting the people in. The tree-shaped concrete elements it is made of, are structural, and form the exoskeleton that holds the program organized so compactly together. The result is a very open facade on the groundfloor, with a continuous terrace on the first floor that runs along the Turfmarkt and the Spui square (stadsbalkon). My role in the project: concept studies, visuals (as a team member).

Following up the tender phase, Atelier HH and NL Architects got the assignment to make interior design studies (beeldkwaliteitsplan). In our proposal the halls are treated as instrument cases: hard on the outside, soft and acoustically absorbent on the inside. Each one envelopped in a recognizable volume and materialized in its own peculiar way. Besides that NL Architects is in charge of the DO design of the Royal Conservatoir. My role in the project: layout studies (as a team member), visuals.

The refurbishment of the Holland Boulevard, in the airport of Schiphol, consisted in the reorganization of the waiting area and the design - amongst others - of a new venue for the Rijksmuseum branch in Schiphol, in a new configuration that would represent the dutch identity to the tourists just landing at the airport. The waiting rooms had to be organized in two

distinct

areas: a lounge area and an “active seating area.

Schiphol Holland Boulevard

27

Our proposal is to place the lounge area behind the facade - in visual connection with the landing strip - and to give it a green, clear polder configuration. The active seating area, instead, takes shape in a cluster living rooms with a cozy caracter, but still visually connected to the more public areas. The Rijksmuseum is hosted in a black mysterious box, that through a sensor systems reveals the content with unexpected, informal transparencies, following the esthetics of the candlelight chiaroscuro, typical of the dutch painting technique. The supermarket is the culminating point of the green spine that runs through a big resort area in the chinese province of Hainan. Due to its position, the choise of turning it into a chunck of landscape, with its lush green roof, came quite natural. The stepping roof has also been the main challenge of the project, as the budget was limited and we had to study a way to turn its organic shape into a systematic, simple and effordable structure. My role in the project: main architect in the definitive design phase, visuals.

The masterplan proposed is an interconnected and dynamic system where a double dune belt constitute a first level of protection against flooding, while a hilly landscape ensures a second layer of protection for the permanent settlements. A mixed use hub connects the area to the NY subway: around this point bike and walking routes unravel over the dunes, and a bunch of seasonal cabins takes place in the summer to disappear in the winter. Resulting the density demands in a rather stocky volumetry, we chose to fragmentate the mass in a bundle of smaller towers. This choice leads also to the generation of multiple rooftops (which can be deputated to neighbourhood activities), and a better integration with the surrounding. My role in the project: design of the facade, design of the public space on the groundfloor, visuals.

Kleiburg was the last flat to be renovated in the Bijlmermeer, in Amsterdam. When the crisis hit after 2008, the housing corporation that owned the building decided, under pressure of the local government and the citens’ initiatives of Bijlmer believers, to set aside the plan of demolishing it and sell it, instead, for the symbolic price of 1 Euro. This raised the interest of many initiatives, of which Consortium De Flat was believed to be the most valid: the idea was to deliver unfinished apartments that the tennants would have

had to complete themselves. This would mean to minimize the initial investment of the developer, producing effordable housing in one of the deepest points of the crisis in the Netherlands, but also to make the units adaptable to any possible target group, generating the social mix that the Bijlmer lacked. The DIY apartments (kluswoningen) were quickly sold out, reviving the same pioneering spirit that originally inspired the first Bijlmer believers in the 70s. The project was awarded in 2017 with the Mies van der Rohe prize.

39

The most radical change had to happen in order to restore the relationship with the street level: the storages that occupied the groundfloor were moved on the upper floors, making room for maisonette units destinated to work-living. On the exterior, instead, it was chosen to embrace the esthaetics of the building block: the external liftcases added in the 70 were removed in order to restore horizontality and the concrete surfaces brought back to life.

The units were not only customizable in the layout and in the finishes, but could also be combined vertically or horizontally. On top of that the buyer could choose whether to keep the old facade module (restored and made more transparent), or go for other types they could pick out of a catalogue. The result is a differentiated overall facade that is still hold up by the monumentality of the whole: the building as an interface for urban diversification. Ljubljana’s plans for its new library were quite special: the building will rise over the roman settlement of Emona. The location is unique, but the program super dense for the maximum height requested. That is why NL Architect decided to enter with two proposals: a “safe“ one, that complies the regulations, and a more radical one. I was assigned to carry on the first one, which in principle consists in a bold extrusion of the site boundary, divided into four blocks by the Cardo and Decumanus, forming a spacious atrium that brings air and light in.

The four resulting blocks are excavated to make room for reading indoor terraces, and are connected through elegant bridges and stairs between each other and with the groundfloor. By doing so the central atrium turns the archeological site on street level into a superdinamic, interconnected galleria. The enclosed functions, instead, are mainly oriented towards the outside, but interior openings ensure the visual connection with the atrium. The school hosts a nursery and a primary school. In our proposal the required multifunctional hall gets a central role in the building: turning almost into an indoor square. By organizing the program in separate volumes joined at the center, the classrooms get maximum contact surface with the outside. The specific requirements needed to get the passive house certification (as demanded from the

client), are implemented as much as possible in the shaping of the volume: in this way the need for natural ventilation generates a volcano at the center of the primary school, and the facade exposed to direct sunlight get an arcade all around which also constitute a second playground for the kids. The first two floors are dedicated to retail and the rest (supposely three floors) is dedicated to housing. According to the building code of the area the floor surface has to be reduced of the 22%. Our strategy is to skip one floor of housing, gaining space in high. Compared

to the traditional solution of the inner courtyard, this configuration would cut the costs, having less facade and structure. he remarkable height of the ceilings on one hand compensates the pronounced depth of the apartments, allowing the daylight to shine deeper, on the other paves the way to a multitude of new configurations. Fargo is the typical example of car driven - extensive urbanism. The aim of the competition is to create a downtown feeling in the plot under development. The strategy we chose to achieve this was to free up the street level from the cars by bringing the parking underground and create a dense, mixed-use urban tissue, with retails on the groundfloor (shopping street), offices on the first floor, housing on the upper levels, and a square and a cultural core in the hearth of the plot. An urban void along the river Drava will host the new UGM gallery in Maribor, Slovenia. The intervention here presented aims to generate a high density architectonical space permeable to urban flows: the museum presents itself as an architectural wood from the ground level on, while underground is arranged as a composition of cellar spaces perforated by small and big green courts. The trees

of the wood have been conceived as devices for energy control and capitalization of renewable energies. Some of their manes act as supports for photovoltaic panels while others, designed as funnels, are the collector system of meteoric waters used for the irrigation of the green halls. Some pillars are structured as chimneys providing natural ventilation for the underground areas while others constitute lightpipes for the daylighting.

The entire project aspires to create a naturally controlled microclimate. The choice itself of an underground space wants to take the greatest advantage of the more stable climate of the underground areas taking favour from the huge thermal mass of the ground. My role in the project: floorplans design, 3d model (Rhinoceros), some of the visuals.

This research investigates housing prototypes for suburban areas, where the boundary between intensive urban tissue and extensive sprawl becomes weak. A medium density structure, generated by the melting of single housing units, and integrated with shared facilities and productive spaces, proved to be the best compromise in matter of cost-benefits. The program

was conceived and examined in such a way that the inhabitants of the condo could work as an autonomous and human scale community: playgrounds, plazas, shared facilities, greehouses, leisure and vegetable gardens are located on each level, while bigger facilities as bycicle and car parking, didactic farm, meeting rooms and sport playgrounds are gathered in the groundlevel. The roof is the privileged place for leisure but also for the

collection of renewable energies through photovoltaic panels and wind power devices. The structure consists of a primary concrete structure and a secondary steel structure for the singular units. Due to this dual structural typology, this model could be potentially used to renovate dismissed or incomplete buildings. My role in the project: program studies, production of presentation material.

The given site is located in a complex area, undergoing a radical process of reconversion of industrial clusters, and encircled by massive tall buildings. The increasing need for open and public spaces in Taipei led to the choice of minimizing the built presence of the project, resulting in an urban void that generates new space for public users. The program is mainly developed underground,

S. Angelo del pino is a dismissed religious complex in a valuable area of the medieval centre of Serra San Quirico (AN). The aim of the intervention is to reactivate the complex in order to halt the deterioration of the building, integrating at the same time the structure within the network of cultural facilities provided by the local municipality: the church would turn into a Sacred Art museum, while the rest of the complex would host a house and a private workshop, ideal for an artist who could take up the management of the museum and its didactic workshop. The project, consisting of a conservative intervention and an infill, follows a series of preparatory studies, and diagnostic investigations, resulting in a critic analysis of the building and its stratification which led to an aware use of contemporary architectural language and techniques respecting the principles of distinguishability and reversibility in matter of new infill in historical urban tissues.

The project consists of a spiritual centre just outside the city of Rome. The program includes a large shopping mall, religious and spiritual buildings, leisure facilities and outdoor spaces for mass events. Places of cult and culture are integrated with commercial and exhibition areas. In a way that the complexity of the historical medieval tissues - which in the course of time proved to be successful in terms of liveableness - can be reproduced in order to turn the centre into a crucial metropolitan area. This represents the

multi-ethnic Roman society expressing the tensions animating urban communities. Religious and spiritual buildings constitute punctual, condensed interventions which shift within the extensive commercial program, generating contemplative outdoor spaces, and turning the hit-and-go mall into a rich, spiritual and stimulating environment.

CONSTRUCTION DETAIL: THE BED BOX

This intervention proposes the reuse of a restaurant into a design hotel. Due to the small size of the building, the leading idea was to design a cozy space, configuring the architectural envelope as a third skin for the user: a suspended ceiling runs all over the rooms, wearing out as an elastic tissue; masonries are mostly hidden by raw white fabric, but episodically reveal themselves showing a coarse, irregular texture, emphasized by a thin black overcoat. The whole furnishing is made of raw materials and evokes the human body. For the suite, the concept budded from the position of the room, which overlooks to the inner

court: a massive red rock seems to invade the space, revealing its presence through the windows to the outside. The element is a bed box, consisting of an I-mec body, structured with a steel frame, padded and enveloped by a soft elastic fabric. The rest of the furnishing and decorations are all in grey scale, in order to emphasize the massive presence of the red element.

71

The genius loci suggested to conceive a non impositive architecture, which could be perceived as a natural, spontaneous superfetation of the site. An ancient tunnel structure located in the area, made of masonry vaults, suggested the idea of a rib cage for a church: the structure which in the human body is meant to contain vital organs and

support breathing movements, turns architecturally into an intimate space, which leads the religious community to participate spiritually and emotionally. As the building is an expression of organic architecture, the project materials are traditional, eventhough construction techniques are contemporary: glued laminated timber for the structure, wooden panels for the architectural

envelope, masonry for the basement walls. The typology for the structural joints was chosen in order to recall the connections between vertebras and ribs. Natural light filters from above through the “vertebras, illuminating punctually the altar and the central space, and laterally from the gallerias, refracting from the masonry walls and diffusing through the whole indoor space.
