The architectural work is not only the object, but also the one that surrounds it and the voids, the spaces. Oscar Niemeyer

About This portfolio gathers the projects that, up to now, have influenced my personal vision of architecture. I explored issues related to both urban and architectural design and in each project I tried to solve the main issue establishing functional and emotional relations between the subject, the building and the context. I think it is important to define the macrosopic and the microscopic aspects of a project, starting from the landscape (urban or natural) to arrive at the definition of the spatial components capable of communicating a specific meaning. I prefer to see architecture as the art of designing the empty spaces rather than the solid ones, because I believe that it is the absence that generates emotional reactions capable of making even
the functional characteristics of the space immediate. I think architecture should not be a formal expression of the designer’s identity, whose sensitivity undoubtedly influences the final product, but rather that it must be an expression of the identity of the place and the identity of those who will live and relate within the designed spaces. In my opinion, Architecture must be in charge of transmitting beauty: to reveal it, enhancing the landscape and the historical-social values, to create it, through spaces that can astonish and excite, to spread it, educating the community to sustainability and democracy.

One of the most important things I learned during my academic career is that the an architectural project must be conceived in a three dimensional way. I like to use not only 3D computer softwares but also physical models in the design process.

Risalire il fiume The Almendares River as a cultural and ecological infrastructure
location: Havana, Cubs keywords: riverfront requalification, greenstructure, resiliency, reuse year: 2018 credits: Elena Dorato as Master Thesis supervisor

encourage social practices typical of the Cuban context. The project proposes the redevelopment of the entire riverbed and the realization of three urban projects to resolve the discontinuities of the metropolitan green network. The river mouth is the most compact and central context: it represents the starting point for the a regeneration that cares about ecology and sustainability.
The Rio Almendares represents a vulnerable margin characterized by natural and urban landscapes increasingly threatened by degradation and abandonment. These border areas could be a dynamic laboratory for the experimentation of creative spaces able to

Hybrid Hutong Using the void as structure to propose spaces for social integration
location: Prato, Italy keywords: public area, junkspaces, densification year: 2014 credits: Gloria Dal Magro, Elena Fauri, Daniel Lobo Carvalho
The Macrolotto 0, the Prato’s Chinatown, is an extremely complex context, characterized by phenomena of social exclusion and urban decay.
overcome the fragmentation that characterizes the Macrolotto and generates opportunities for meetings between citizens. The project consists of a commercial center that acts as an urban attractor, characterized by a semi-transparent skin, and of fragmented and closed volumes that constitutes the service area. The two areas overlook an underground square, protected by the deterioration of the surroundings. The hidden garden which becomes a characterizing element that generates a ‘surprise effect’ in the city, propose a new perspective about the hortus conclusus’s archetype.
The masterplan is designed to densify the area: the regeneration of abandoned factories or residual voids, creates the opportunity to introduce urban polarities able to respond to the needs of the inhabitants and to attract italians in order to allow a better social integration. The connection of each of these spaces allows to

Nexus A polyfunctunal building creating new relations with the river banks
location: Ferrara, Italy keywords: frames, relation with landscape, permeability year: 2014 credits: Gloria Dal Magro, Elena Fauri
The project aims to rethink the public-private relationship in a densely constructed fluvial context, modeling the visual permeability between the road and the water.
internal activities and the external context. The three buildings above ground are closed and massive: only the common areas and the terraces are completely open to the water. Instead, the community center has been designed to valorize the connection with the river: the interior walls create a flexible relationship with the space and a continuous visual connection with the landscape. The purpose is the creation of physical and visual relationships on different levels that could generate various experiences with the surroundings.
The three duplex buildings are student residencies and are divided by two courtyards, that are the identifying elements of the underground community center. This one connects the residencies. The design of the elevations, characterized by the alternation of glass and corten, reflects the level of permeability between the

emphasize the entrances. The staircase is located at the center of the court and is the hinge from which the connecting balconies depart. Those are one with the internal distribution and, being staggered, guarantee the visual relationship between the floors. The project foresees the closure of the court with a transparent ETFE roof, which allows to maintain the sensation of staying in an open space. The new court is not only an access point but it turns into a real square and a landmark in the building.
The distribution project allows to use the entire building with a great permeability, for students, for professors and for external users. To make the new access recognizable from the outside and suitable for the pre-existence, was chosen to use a design that valorizes the verticality of the faรงade and at the same time introduces dynamism: the oblique cuts

Bend-me A self-standing structure bonded by textile
location: Guimaraes, Portugal keywords: parametric architecture, public installation year: 2015 credits: Petr Vacek
The self standing shelter reflects the tension produced by a structure bonded by texitile. Two contradictory forces: one represented by the rigid plate that tries to keep as flat as possible; and the second of textile which tends to stretch and bend the whole.
rotation of the tension strings is based on selecting outer naked points connected with lines. Also the amount of tension lines is based on parameter. The Grasshopper’s plug in Kangaroo allow to bend the whole virtual structure and allow to get to the shape found using a piece of paper.
The use of the textile refers to the characteristics of the industry of the Minho region. The geometry of pavilion before the folding process is driven in Grasshopper by mirroring and rotation. The
Real tension is produced by using textile and a foldable material.

ANCHORS
Tension strings represent textile structure. Amount and position of lines are controlled parametrically. This is main force that bends the structure. MATERIAL SETTING Mesh represent bendable material. Its behavior is set by two forces: one keep angle between each adjacent mesh face zero, the other keep all mesh edges same lenght as its initial. 28
Anvchor points hold whole structure on the ground and helps it to fold properly.

Dome A temporary trasformable structure
location: Guimaraes, Portugal keywords: lightness, biomorphology, permeability year: 2015 credits: Petr Vacek
The structure define a fluid internal space that can be traversed from outside to inside without interruptions, creating a strong relation with the nature of the surroundings.
The technology chosen, bamboo with steel connections, makes lightweight and easy to mount. The bamboo skeleton is covered by two different membranes: the interior one is transparent and waterproof and the external tissue ensures shading. This allows to play with the triangular modules to adapt the project to the context.
The project proposes a flexible temporary structure, whose functionality varies with the city. Infact, it is expected to change the structure according to the seasons. The aggregation model is susceptible to compositional changes, enabling different uses in different contexts.
If looked from afar the structure seems compact and solid. But, approaching the lightness of the object becomes clear.

11:11 A panoramic structure in the botanical garden of Imér
location: Imér, Trento keywords: self-construction, wood, landscape year: 2017 credits: Camposaz workshop team
The project aims to solve the problem of accessibility to the new botanical park by enhancing the panorama offered by the Dolomiti’s landscape.
The promenade guarantees access from both the heights of the topography of and allows to enjoy the landscape from different points of view. The wood path develops on two main levels: the lower level, characterized by the covered exhibition path and the vegetable garden with seats, is connected by a staircase to the upper panoramic walkway.
The intervention area was occupied by a small building in a state of strong decay that we decide to demolish. The wooden pavilion develops around the foundation of the old building, leaving a central void that becomes a resting area, characterised by a small didactic vegetable garden.
The laying of the wood emphasizes the verticality in the staircase and the longitudinality in the upper walkway.

The wood structure is one with landscape, thanks to the various framed views, in which all the materials, from the stone to the vegetation, are stratified. The nature itself, that absorbes the pavilion, qualifies it and loads it with emotional force. 37
m o d e l s
I believe that the realization of physical models is very important in the design. When I create a model I often use the light, as any other material, because it helps me to analyze the full-empty relationship and to better understand the how the project communicate with the surroundings.

photography Since I was a child, I’ve been fascinated by Photography. During the university I deepened the subject a lot, also learning to develop the photos in the darkroom. This art has greatly influenced my vision of Architecture and my compositional sensitivity. Photography is a indispensable tool for me because with it I can document what strikes me during my travels and, above all, because it helps me to change perspective and experience new reading keys.
41
informality It is one of the themes that I like the most. Discovering the habits, activities and spontaneous relationships that have stratified over time in a given context is one of the main objectives during my site ispections. In these cases I try to use photography to document the atmosphere that the place transmits.

The goal was to apply analytical cubism to photography each picture is made up of a variable number of photographs, each of them framed in a different perspective.
