CV Giulia Stecchi Born in Rome, 6 Dicembre 1993 Living in Milan Contacts: giulia.stecchi@gmail.com 3472227889 The academic background achieved during the Bachelor’s degree in Rome allowed me to develop a strong design sensibity for the urban context. Learning how to design the relation among historical preexistences with contemporary grafts was extremely interesting as well as complex. The move to Milan for the Master degree in Architecture was due to a strong willing to be closer to an international scenario and maturate, simultaneously, the capability of reading the urban texture. Attending the international course, I explored very current topics such as urban regeneration, resilience after disaster, global risks and sustainability, with the opportunity to interact with colleagues from all over the world. Architecture represents such a dynamic and multidisciplinary dimension that allowed me to develop a very flexible mind and the capability to work in sinergy.

The Agro Pontino plain is one of the most at risk Italian coastal landscape due to erosion, sea level rise and flood phenomena. The integral reclamation and the consequent urbanization process modified a territory once dominated by vast wetlands and dunes. The altered topography and the water pumping system will no longer be able to effectively contrast the impact of climate change. The simulation of the flood risk scenario due to the sea level rise, expected by 2100, shows the lowland as the most critical area. The complex line between earth and sea has to be considered as a dynamic border on which to intervene referring to a landscape that interacts by mediating the respective forces. In order to turn fragilities into opportunities, the plain treatment will be adaptive to the future environmental challenges, preserving the inland production, through the introduction of an open lagoon, as a natural water control basin, the regeneration of the dune system and the consolidation of the boundary. The design process involves a progressive gradient of natural and artificial elements along the buffer zone applying specific solutions and creating a continuum with the context. The aim is to create a flood resilient system and an ever-changing landscape able to face the future upheavals and to provide a social catalyst. Sustainable design opportunities - social, cultural and physical processes- will lead to a new scenario aiming a resilient attitude and a new collective identity.

The general purpose of the competition was the design process of an architecture of water in the archeological landscape of Villa Adriana, the roman Villa close to Tivoli (Rome). The specific tasks were related to an architectural design of a thermo-expo pavilion inside Villa Adriana, a water landscape design for the relative Unesco Buffer Zone; and a strategic communication and visual design for the marketing process.The pavilion summarizes the essential feature of the Roman thermal building based on the relationship between water and idealized human body, between water and art, between water and beauty. The pavilion is therefore characterized by the organic presence of art or archaeological collections, organized in his indoor and outdoor spaces, qualifying their target and the intent of cultural communication that is at the basis of the very special objective of equipping an archaeological site such as that of Villa Adriana in wellness and contemplation equipment to support the enhancement processes. The internal spa area consists of an entrance-reception area, which in turn distributes others five areas: one for changing rooms and bathrooms, one for thermal baths with water temperature differentiated, a relaxation area, one for cultural activities and one for the bar-restaurant. The collections are arranged within the spa area. The outdoor area is used only for the display of sculptural collections. The landscape design consists in the construction of a park (Horti Hadriani) which is constituted as new access to the Archaeological Area from Via Maremmana Inferiore, starting from the intersection with Strada Galli-Via Antonio Marziale and Strada di Roccabruna. The design reflection has as its main object the relationship between Soil, Water, Vegetation under the aspect of Perception. The goal is the design of a connection path in which these elements are articulated in a landscape synthesis in which two main presences emerge architectural: the Porta al Parco (Propylaea of ​​ Villa Adriana) and the Aquae Ligoriane (water path architectural).

The design process involves the reuse of an abandoned building and the relative extension in order to provide a retrofitting project and a transformation able to provide a sustainable solution. The plot is located in Gallarate, a small town close to MIlan. Mapping Gallarate was essential to notice the proximity of the project site with schools and families attractors. A coworking space with the addition of a child-care centre seems to be the most suitable function for the community and for the extension project. The necessity of inclusion of working moms and dads in a coworking centre is a very current issue. The proposal provides a platform for kids daycare and flexibility to working parents to pursue their job along. The presence of children inside the building makes the relation with the sorrounding park extremely important: emphatizing kids activity spaces can help to merge both built environment and landscape. The conceptual idea is driven by techical tools as solar and shadows analysis: this operation helps to understand the best location for the building extension. the main issue is the phisical connection between the old building and the extension: a glass element will work as a trasparent connector able to provide contrast between the two main volumes.The design process involves the problem of the accessibility: an articulated system of ramps and stairs provide a sort of piazza in front of the complex and an easy access to all the functions. The interior distribution of the space is designed through different levels, shifted, in order to emphatize the importance of the visual perceptions. The finishing is a complex techological system of bricks ensures different perception of the natural light and an interesting relation with the old bricks facades of the existing building.

INVISIBLE FORCES A parametric approach for urban regeneration Individual work Design studio 2, February- March 2018. Tutors: Simone Giostra, Elisa Cattaneo Master, Politecnico di Milano.
Visso is a municipality belonging to Marche region in Italy, 5km far from the epicenter of the earthquake of the 26 October 2016. The topography and the soil condition seem to be the same everywhere if analysed superficially. The GIS software allows a deeper analyses of the land: a combination of digital map and georeferenced data show the conditions that affect a territory. Through the overlapping of several mappings, Visso’s territory results to be the most vulnerable one in terms of coexistence of risks: seismic risk, flooding risk and landslide risk. Grasshopper software was helpful to highlight the natural forces that could have been taken into consideration to develop the project. The landscape project along the valley consists of a wet-land park organized around a drainage system that lead the water flow of the rivers through small channels into artificial basins that can collect the excessive amount of water in case of flooding. According to the simulated analysis, the basins are disposed along the most critical areas: some of them are meant to work as phytodepuration basins or as leisure pool in case of normal condition of the rivers’ water flow. Low artificial hills are placed among the channels and the basins in order to enhance the proper water distribution. To improve the whole system, the intervention on the slope consists of artificial inflections that let the water reach the rivers and the basins. The building project has been designed along the slope as a consolidation system: the terraced building avoids the erosion of the soil in a specific critical area of the mountain.The design is the result of a re-shaping operation of the level curves of the mountain.

Quattro libri e un paio d’occhiali Exhibition for palladian Basilica September - January 2019 Design studio, Group work Tutor: Caliari Pier Federico. Master, Politecnico di Milano.
The aim of this course was the arrangement of a temporary exhibition inside the Basilica of Vicenza and the topic of this exposition consisted in a reinterpretation of Palladio through the eyes of Scarpa. Using the architectural approach of Scarpa it was possible to realise a narrative path of Palladio’s studies through the classic architectures that have so much fascinated him and have been the foundation of his style. Moved by Scarpa’s attention to specific perspective views, studied in every single detail, the exhibition was organised mainly in two different volumes that hide inside them a sequence of space which show the architectural references of Palladio and his most important works. The design intent was to create an exhibition that allowed the visitor to be surprised once he entered in a space that looks differently from the outside, keeping the relation between the classic architectures studied by Palladio and his reinterpretation. The flexibility of this exposition allows the visitors to take a journey into Palladio’s architecture thanks to a initially linear path which subsequently begins to break up in the heart of the exhibition before ending in the Theatre, the maximum expression of his architecture.

The hostel line Urban grafting Group work Design studio 1, March - June 2017. Tutors: Zucchi Cino, Cassiani Matilda, Sturla Paola Master, Politecnico of Milan
The project is located in the final part of Porta Genova rail
yard. This neighborhood has been involved in a long process of transformation: the railway line that runs through the area of intervention has been decommissioned in 1936 and some part have been converted into green areas. Moved by the historical and architectural value of the district, the proposal is to provide a connector function, alway guaranteed by the presence of the railway line. The analysis of the green highlights how the system is interrupted in correspondece of the project area. Therefore the proposal is to include spaces wich allow to patch the system, creating a green connection between Solari Park and Baden Powell Park. The presence of the railwya has always marked a sharp cut in the urban fabric of the area, without taking into account the architectural value of the close building and preventing fro benefit of views. The project area is between two different urban fabric, but at the same time closely related. In the west part there is the former industrial area, converted in the Design District, which has many buildings of social and cultural importance: this peculiarities make the neighborhood alive and appropriate for the new hostel. the area is filled with social infrastructure from bleachers, bench seats and raised lauwns that allow people to gather. The design of the landscape shifts as it moves along the line to create rich, sub-spaces for different usages. The design promote opportunities for occupying and using the corridor not only passing through: social interaction plays the main role. Also the dormitory are implemented with particular spaces designed for guest to share and relax. The architectural features od the hostel respond to the feature of the context identity, with a metal cladding of Tortona side and a more domestic coating on the square side.

Ostiense district represents a very dynamic scenario for the city of Rome. It takes advantage from the strategical position along the Tiber river and close to hystorical centre- that allow an unstoppable growth. During the industrial revolution it became a very important productive centre for the city. In the ‘90es the settlement of the Third university of Rome, Roma Tre, in the district triggered several trasformation and re-use strategy of all those insutrial building that have been abandoned after the Second World Word II. The perspective of rearrangement is consolidated in the social dimension: the recovery and adaptation interventions contribute to characterize the neighborhood in cultural terms. The district became an important urban centrality and expression of culture, relaxationa and amusement. In this conditions, the library project has to be meant not only as a culture centre but as a social catalyst for the community. The area of intervention is characterized by the presence of Roman archaeological finds and of a historic portal dated back to the beginning of the XX century. The entire design process was driven by the relation with theese preexistences. The portal will be integrated inside the building as a buffering zone able to separate a more private and silent area from the rest of the library. The Roman finds will be integrated in the outdoor public space. The main feature of the project is the suspanded circulation path designed to connect all the functions together. The metallic envelope of the building is extremely related to the industrial archeological features of the district.
