Architecture&Migration: A social model for multicultural integration
Project Info
Project Description
2017 / Academic Experience / Teamwork
In the last years the migration emergency in Italy has been growing. 70% of migrants arriving in Europe every year, land along the coasts of this country especially in Sicily. The project is located in Palermo and it’s integrated with an existing reception centre, based in a former air force barracks in the Oreto district.
Residential / Public Space / Conservation Master Thesis Design IUAV, Venice, IT
The buildings, dated 1930s, have been partially recovered since 2002. The immigrant guests - about 350 - live however in large dormitories and the only guaranteed services are accommodation and health care: no cultural mediation services, education, social assistance and preparatory training for work are provided. The objective is not only to provide accommodation for a large number of people, but also to respond to the need to help the dialogue between two communities: on one hand there are people fleeing war, famine and captivity, on the other there is a region like Sicily which, due to its traditions, has a strong and marked identity. This project is a social model based on architecture, capable of creating unity, integration and well-being - economic, social and cultural - for both parties. The structure involves both worlds, providing a space for contact and inegration to immigrants and citizens of Palermo alike.

Design Concept Based on people’s flows, paths and movements, the project spaces are organised on multiple levels. It’s possible to identify two different type of spaces spreading on tree levels: - a public space within services for citizens, including the maket square, shops, and theatre. This is located on the main street level and, therefore, well connected to the city centre. - a private space, with functions intended for immigrants only. The accomodations are placed at the lower level, taking advantage of the existing difference in height of the ground and giving a private character to the living spaces. - a raised pedestrian path connects these accommodations to the main services for the immigratns: study rooms, laboratories, canteen, officies. This solution guarantees preferential lanes to those residing in the immigration centre and, at the same time, this allows a social connection and integration on the intermediate level, hosting services and activities for both communities.

The House of Light: Experimental way of Living
Project Info
Project Description
2017 | Work Experience
This project is a new build three-storey family home set into a steep hill in Sevenoaks, Kent.
Residential, Sevenoaks, UK
The site was purchased with an existing planning permission in place which set out the depth of the plan and the overall height of the development. The original proposal followed a relatively common approach to developer-led suburban housing without much regard to the particularities of the site and location, resulting in a series of dark and undesirable spaces. The project was approached by looking at the conditions of the site itself, set between two detached houses on a hill sloping towards the North.
Design and Construction London Atelier
A more conventional approach of stacking the volumes down the hill would have resulted in a series of North-facing spaces with little direct sunlight. This would also have limited the direct connection to the green spaces, which would naturally be located further up the hill to the south of the site.

Massing and Natural Light
N
Step one: Sun light study in the conventional approach
Step two: addition of the sunken garden
Design Concept The new concept splits the established mass into two halves connecting them via a central glazed link. This was envisaged as an atrium that would house the staircase. The glazed link is set in from the main mass to create a small central courtyard bringing external green spaces into the centre of the plan. The levels in the two halves are staggered. In the Northern half of the building they are set around 1.2 m below the levels in the Southern half, following the slope of the hill. Each half of the building contains three levels with staggered access via the staircase, forming six distinct split levels. The central link is glazed on all sides.
16
This glazed connection allows light from south to penetrate every room, even in the most northern parts of the building. To the rear of the building, a sunken stepped garden with planters at multiple levels forms a dense green space. This begins at the lower ground level and joins the upper levels of the hill when reaching the main back garden. This sunken garden adds a green and light feeling to the otherwise subterranean lower ground floor. The insertion of a central courtyard with a single silver birch tree, accessible from the side of the building, breaks up the deep plan of the building and connects the spaces inside to the outside environment.
Step three: slit the builing in two volumes
Step four: addition of the glass link to connect the volumes

Limited by the height restrictions on the upper floor, the roof form is optimised to maximise the ceiling heights in the habitable spaces. It also provides an opportunity for the insertion of south-facing skylights in all rooms. The building is designed to a high environmental specification. It is comprised of a steel structure and concrete floors. The house is externally clad in handmade grey Danish bricks and folded aluminium sheets. The generous cantilevered staircase rises up inside the atrium and acts as a central spine connecting the half-levels on either side.

The glass portion of the balustrade increases in height as it ascends, allowing more light to enter and improving the visual connection between the multiple levels. The atrium is crowned by three large skylights and it is glazed on both sides.

Aga Khan Museum: The World of the Fatimids Exhibition
Project Info
Project Description
2017 / Work Experience
The World of the Fatimids is a temporary exhibition that bears witness to a remarkable dynasty that built one of the world’s oldest universities, compiled one of its greatest libraries, and fostered a flowering of the arts and sciences. At its height in the 10th and 11th centuries, the Fatimids established one of the greatest civilisations in the world, influencing knowledge and culture throughout the Mediterranean, Europe, and the Near East. The exhibition marks the first time a carefully selected collection of masterpieces from the Fatimid’s dynasty are shown in North America.
Museum and Exhibitions, Toronto, Canada Design and Construction London Atelier
The space has been divided into five thematic areas that allow visitors to immerse themselves in the discovery of life and arts during the caliphate of the fatimids: The land of the three faiths, Architecture in Fatimid Egypt, The palace, Daily life in Fatimid Egypt, The outside world. The boundary between the spaces is not strongly defined. The layout, formed through the arrangement of showcases and the projections panels, allows to play with the perspective and to always be in visual contact with next space, encouraging the “desire to discover“ of the visitor and transforming the path in a fluid and continuous experience. The choice of using simple materials such as whitewashed plywood is aimed at focusing the attention on the objects. The blue colour recalls the Blue Qur’an, a Fatimid manuscript in Kufic calligraphy.

Estate Development in Somerset Conversion: the Stone Barns
Project Info
Project Description
2018 / Work Experience
As part of a larger development of multiple newbuild and conversions in the grounds of a Grade II listed estate in Somerset, we have obtained planning permission for these two barn conversions.
Affordable Housing, Somerset, UK Design and Planning London Atelier
Working within the proportions and the footprint established by the historic barns, these two new buildings are set within the remnants of the historic stone walls. Pre-fabricated sandwiched panels with cedar cladding rise from within the stone walls to form the structures. Both buildings open towards the south, offering spectacular views over the hills and allowing light to flood into the internal spaces. This is further emphasised by the double-height glazing within the larger barn, coupled with tall ceilings to help form a dramatic living space that also benefits the accommodation on the upper level. In contrast, the northern facade of the building facing the road is kept relatively closed.

Estate Development in Somerset Conversion: live minimal, live simple
Project Info
Project Description
2018 / Work Experience
The project is a conversion of a stone agricultural building into a one bedroom single dwelling. The existing building is made of clay roof tiles and heavy stone walls and it’s currently accessed trough its north facade composed of two large openings. The overall volume has been kept and walls have been insulated internally.
Residential Conversion, Somerset, UK Design and Tender London Atelier
The internal space has been divided by the simple insertion of a new pad - conceptually designed as a joinery piece - that creates the necessary space to fit bathroom and kitchen, and it can be used as storage space accessible from both bedroom and living room. Furthermore it forms an additional bedroom or play-room for kids at the top floor. The use of simple materials has been chosen to fully express the intention of minimal and simple living. The openings are repositioned and new openings are introduced in appropriate positions to increase the natural light. A day bed has been introduced to form a dining area and to keep a visual relation with the surrounding nature and increase the natural light into the space.

Estate Development in Somerset New Built: stone building, affordable houses
Project Info
Project Description
2018 / Work Experience
The project is the new construction of a residential building formed by three units. It’s part of the same construction developement in Somerset.
Affordable Housing, Somerset, UK Design and Planning London Atelier
The challenge was to design a building within a very limited space between two existing dwelllings and a tall boundary stone wall. Despite the limited size of the units - conceived as affordable housing development - the goal is to guarantee a space matching the minimum standard for a decent quality of living. That’s why simplicity is the key to the concept behind this project. The relationship with the context was the starting design point: the volume of the new building was dictated by the alignment of the roof lines of the existing buildings. The south façade, partly built on the pre-existing stone wall, tries to reinterpret the composition of the façades of the surrounding buildings. The east side of the building forms a small private patio that can be shared between the three units, the modern language of the façade expresses a sharp upset between the new and the old.
