THE HUNGARY GRAND PRIX, AUGUST 8TH, 2006.
WHAT AN AMAZING START BY ALONSO! 15TH ON THE GRID, AND LEADING AFTER ONLY 18 LAPS …
… IN A RACE LED UP TO THEN BY THE TWO MERCEDES MCLARENS OF RÄIKKONEN AND DE LA ROSA, BUT NOT FOR LONG. THE RENAULT DRIVER MAKES SHORT WORK OF THEM, PASSING THEM ON THE 18TH, AND THEN LEAVING THEM IN HIS WAKE, OPENING A GAP OF 49 SECONDS.
BUT WHAT'S HAPPENED? ALONSO IS RETIRING FROM THE RACE. HIS WHEEL SEEMS TO HAVE COME OFF!
WHAT A SHAME FOR THE RENAULT TEAM. TO THINK THAT ONLY A FEW WEEKS AGO THEY WERE CELEBRATING THEIR HUNDREDTH VICTORY WITH ELF IN GRAND STYLE IN BARCELONA.
RENAULT HASN'T WON SINCE THE CANADIAN GRAND PRIX ON JUNE 25TH. WHAT A TURNAROUND FOR A TEAM THAT WAS IN COMPLETE CONTROL IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEASON. EVEN WITH A LEAD OF TEN POINTS OVER FERRARI IN THE CONSTRUCTORS' COMPETITION, THEY'RE LOOKING AT A DIFFICULT END TO THE SEASON.
3
THE FIRST CAREER WIN FOR THE HONDA DRIVER JENSON BUTTON CAME IN A RACE THAT WAS FAR FROM INCIDENT-FREE! HE BENEFITED ALSO FROM SHUMI'S RETIREMENT FROM THE RACE, WHO HAD FOUGHT BACK TO 2ND PLACE BEFORE BEING FORCED OUT.
NEXT DAY, WEST OF PARIS COME OFF IT! WELL, JEAN-MARC, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS ANONYMOUS PHONE CALL?
RIGHT AFTER THE HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX, SOMEONE CLAIMED RESPONSIBILITY FOR ALONSO'S DEFEAT AND SAID THAT NASTY SURPRISES WERE IN STORE FOR TOTAL IN THE REST OF THE COMPETITION, AND FOR RENAULT.
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
YOU KNOW, EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE TO TAKE THIS SORT OF THING SERIOUSLY, IT'S NOT THE FIRST TIME IT'S HAPPENED.
EVEN BACK IN 1969, WHEN JACKY STEWART AND HIS MATRA BROUGHT THEIR FIRST VICTORY, ELF RECEIVED THE SAME THREATS.
AND WHEN JEAN-PIERRE JABOUILLE WON THE FRENCH GRAND PRIX IN 1979 WITH RENAULT ELF, SOME JOKER STARTED SAYING SIMILAR THINGS.
THE TECHNICAL TESTS JUST BEFORE THE ISTANBUL RACE. DO YOU REALLY THINK SOMEONE COULD HAVE SABOTAGED ALONSO'S CAR IN HUNGARY?
I THINK IT'S FAIRLY CLEAR THAT HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE RACE WAS DUE TO AN INCORRECTLY MOUNTED WHEEL.
AND EVEN THOUGH THE PERSONNEL WITH ELF AND WITH FORMULA 1 IN GENERAL MAY HAVE CHANGED, THIS TYPE OF INTIMIDATION HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE.
DELUSIONAL? I HOPE YOU'RE RIGHT.
IF YOU ASK ME, IT'S SOMEONE DELUSIONAL, WHO HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING.

HEY! WHO ARE YOU? YOU SHOULDN'T BE IN HERE!
WHO WAS IT?

I DON'T KNOW. HE MUST HAVE BROKEN IN. HE SEEMED VERY INTERESTED IN THE OILS.
BUT HOW DID HE GET ACCESS BADGES FOR THE PADDOCK AND THE GARAGE?

Engine oil Hydraulic fluid Brake fluid Bearing grease
Fuel Gearbox oil

products in R26 F1 car
Fuels are designed to comply with stringent FIA regulations and target performance by improving: • Engine power • Reliability and cleanliness • Consumption reduction Engine oil/gearbox oil target reliability and performance and improve: • performance through reduced friction • engine protection • heat evacuation • seals protection • part cleanliness Transmission and bearing greases ensure that metal parts in contact move against each other freely, avoiding failures. An F1 car wheel can rotate at more than 3,000 rpm at full speed. The hydraulic and brake fluids are 100% specially designed for the demands of modern F1: fast shifting of gears, power steering, or slowing from 300km/h to a standstill in less than 80 metres, calls for special products! Coolant protects against the phenomenon of corrosion that affects the special alloys used in engine parts.
6
Elf products keep the Renault F1 Team’s racing car supplied with all the liquids (fluids) it needs.
BACK IN PARIS THE INDIVIDUAL MANAGED TO ESCAPE. IN ALL PROBABILITY, IT WOULD SEEM HE WAS TRYING TO SABOTAGE THE LUBRICANT ANALYSIS APPARATUS OR THE CHROMATOGRAPH.
MESSIEUR, THANK YOU FOR COMING. I HAVE CALLED THIS CRISIS MEETING TO DEAL WITH THESE REPEATED THREATS.
ARE THE TWO INCIDENTS CONNECTED? WHO COULD WANT TO HARM US IN THIS WAY? PLEASE BE FRANK IN YOUR OPINIONS.

… BUT NO UNUSUAL BETS OR ODDS HAVE BEEN RECORDED TO DATE.
WE HAVE CONSIDERED THE HYPOTHESIS OF A GAMBLER WHO WANTS TO FORCE DESTINY'S HAND … AS YOU KNOW, AS WELL AS THE THREATS, THERE WAS AN ATTEMPTED BREAK-IN IN TURKEY.

WHAT DOES TOTAL COMPETITION INTEND TO DO ABOUT THE INDIVIDUAL MAKING REPEATED TELEPHONE THREATS AND ATTEMPTING TO SABOTAGE ITS FACILITIES IN TURKEY? IT'S NOT NICE TO HIDE POTENTIAL FRONT-PAGE NEWS FROM THE PRESS.
FIRST OF ALL, HOW DO YOU KNOW ABOUT ALL THIS?

HELLO, MAX. YOU WANTED TO SEE ME?
AL H N IC
YOU'VE BEEN WORKING WITH THE COMPETITION FOR 15 YEARS NOW.
STAN, YOU CAN DROP THOSE TESTS FOR A WHILE. I HAVE A JOB FOR YOU.
TIME FLIES.
I HAVE A JOB FOR YOU. YOU'LL HAVE TO GET YOUR TEAM TOGETHER.
WHAT?
HELLO, HUGO ? WHERE ARE YOU? CAN YOU MEET ME IN MY OFFICE?
...SO NOW YOU CAN SEE WHY THE COMPETITION DIRECTORS ARE WORRIED. IT'LL HAVE TO BE COMPLETE LOCK-DOWN.
I'LL BE THERE IN TWO MINUTES.
LET'S START BY LISTING ALL THE POSSIBLE RISKS AT ALL POINTS ALONG THE CHAIN:
ANY IDEAS?
AND WE'LL CHECK TO SEE IF ANYTHING ODD HAS OCCURRED OF LATE AT THE CENTRE IN SOLAIZE.
FROM RESEARCH TO RACE DAY, WITH ALL THE PRODUCTION AND HOMOLOGATION STAGES IN BETWEEN, SO THAT WE CAN SPOT THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR SABOTAGE.

Products are formulated to meet Renault's specific needs. They are validated by Renault. 3. Production. Fuels and lubricants are produced in Solaize. 4. Quality Control. Elf ensures that its products comply both with the technical regulations and with the brief laid down by the Renault F1 Team. 5. Homologation. Products are approved by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile). 6. Presence at races. A team of five people (logistics and technical support) is on hand to assist the Renault F1 Team at Grands Prix. 7. After the race… Fuel and lubricant formulations are constantly improved during the season as a function of the technical evolutions on the car.
winning formula
Renault’s exemplary technical partnership with Elf is founded on common values, including open exchange, innovation-led progress, strong bonds and mutual confidence. The challenge faced by Elf in 2006 is to tailor its products to the specific requirements of the V10 engine and the seven-speed gearbox. Three areas were particularly taken into account when developing the engine lubricant: the timing system, the pistons and the bearings. Each of these domains calls for a specific solution in terms of viscosity and anti-wear properties. On the fuel front, the aim was to further speed up the combustion process, since more demand is effectively made of the V8 at high revs than was previously the case with the V10.

YES,
ALL ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES ARE IN THIS LOG.
I CAN CONFIRM THAT THERE HAVE BEEN ATTEMPTED BREAK-INS AT THE SOLAIZE RESEARCH FACILITIES.
CAN YOU GIVE ME THE NAME OF THE PERSON THEY CAME TO SEE?
LÉA
NO PROBLEM.
AS YOU KNOW, THIS IS THE LUBRICANTS LAB.
WE CREATE THE OILS FOR FORMULA 1, AND FOR EVERYDAY CARS. EVEN THOUGH THE OILS ARE CUSTOM DESIGNED, WE SEE MORE OF VISCOMETERS THAN WE DO OF CUSTOMERS.
ALTHOUGH THE OTHER DAY SOME GUY I DIDN'T KNOW CALLED FOR WHAT HE SAID WAS AN ARRANGED MEETING.
AT THE MIXING CENTRE WE REALIZED STRAIGHT AWAY. WE'RE A SMALL PRODUCTION UNIT, CREATING SPECIAL FUELS IN SMALL VOLUMES, FOR COMPETITION. EVERYTHING IS CHECKED AND DOUBLE-CHECKED.
THE ONLY STRANGE EVENT RECENTLY WAS A DELIVERY OF ADDITIVES THAT HADN'T BEEN ORDERED.
HERE IN TRIBOLOGY, WE'RE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR THE PRODUCT WITH THE LOWEST VISCOSITY AND THE HIGHEST FLUIDITY LEVELS.
DURING THE DAY, WE CARRY OUT WEAR AND OXIDATION TESTS ON ENGINE PARTS, AND LEAVE THEM OVERNIGHT.
12
TWO WEEKS AGO, WE HAD AN ALARM GO OFF IN THE NIGHT. IT WAS CLEAR THAT SOMEONE HAD TRIED TO BREAK INTO OUR LABS.
FRIDAY MORNING, TEST SESSION
...THAT THERE HAVE SOMEONE IS TRYING TO BEEN A FEW BREAK-IN MAKE THINGS DIFFICULT BY ATTEMPTS, BUT WASTING THE TEAM'S NOTHING TIME. TO GO ON. STILL, WITH THE INFORMATION WE GOT FROM SOLAIZE AND THE ATTEMPTED BREAK-INS IN THE PAST, I THINK IT’S CLEAR
DO YOU THINK IT COULD BE A COMPETITOR?
I’D BE VERY SURPRISED… WE KNOW ALL THE COMPETITORS. THERE ARE ONLY 11 TEAMS.
I THINK I MIGHT HAVE FOUND ANOTHER LEAD...
13
...IT’S PROBABLY SOMEONE IN THE BUSINESS. HE SEEMS TO KNOW HIS STUFF WHEN IT COMES TO LUBRICANTS, AND EXPERTS IN THAT FIELD DON’T GROW ON TREES!
7 SECONDS... OK!
I FOUND THIS FILE IN HUMAN RESOURCES
THEO RISKOVIC! I KNEW HIM WHEN I WAS JUST STARTING OUT WITH ELF. HE WAS A FLUIDS SPECIALIST, A GIFTED ENGINEER, BUT TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL
I’M DEVELOPING A NEW FUEL ADDITIVE, “X27”. IT’LL MAKE THE ENGINE INCREDIBLY RESPONSIVE.
HEY RISK, WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON AT THE MOMENT?
GROUNDBREAKING! REVOLUTIONARY !
YOU KNOW, I'VE TALKED TO THE TEAM, AND EVERYONE AGREES YOU’VE GOT A LOT OF TALENT. BUT WE HAVE CERTAIN WAYS OF WORKING AND YOU HAVE TO STICK TO THEM.
GET OUT! I’M WORKING ON A MASTERPIECE HERE!
I SEE RISK IS DOING SOME KEY RESEARCH AGAIN. LIKE WRITING TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS, EXCHANGING IDEAS, NEVER SKIPPING STAGES OF THE PRODUCT VALIDATION PROCESS, BEING HUMBLE ENOUGH TO…
… AND THINGS DIDN’T IMPROVE.
I’M GUESSING HE DIDN’T STAY WITH THE COMPANY LONG.
LOOKS LIKE RISK IS TESTING SOME GROUNDBREAKING TECHNOLOGY TODAY…
YOU DON’T KNOW THE HALF OF IT.
LÉA GUILLAUME MANUEL
14
HE’S BEEN WRITING TO ELF, AND NOW TOTAL, FOR YEARS, HARASSING AND ATTACKING THE COMPANY...
SINCE HE LEFT, HE'S BECOME PARANOID AND DELUSIONAL. HE SAYS TOTAL STOLE ALL HIS INVENTIONS...
GRRR… THAT'S WORTH ANOTHER LAWSUIT!
… PARTICULARLY THE INFAMOUS “X27”.
AND YET IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO USE X27 TODAY BECAUSE THE FIA RULES ARE SO STRICT. THE SPECIFICATIONS HAVE CHANGED AND F1 FUELS NOW HAVE TO BE SIMILAR TO REGULAR CONSUMER FUELS.
AT 18,000 RPM AND 150 SPARKS PER SECOND, OPTIMIZING THE FUEL HAS BECOME TRICKIER STILL.
IT’S A HOUSE ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF DIJON.
I MANAGED TO FIND HIS ADDRESS USING THE INFORMATION FROM HUMAN RESOURCES.
15
THERE’S NO ANSWER!
AROUND HERE! THE BACK DOOR IS OPEN.
LOOK! IT’S THE PLANS OF THE SOLAIZE RESEARCH CENTRE! THERE’S NO DOUBT ABOUT IT NOW: RISK IS INVOLVED.
OH NO! IT’S THE ITINERARY OF THE TRUCK TRANSPORTING THE FUEL BARRELS TO THE MONZA GRAND PRIX!
IS ANYBODY HOME? THAT'S NOT ALL, LÉA.
HE WANTS TO DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO STOP THAT TRUCK REACHING ITS DESTINATION.
THE SHIPMENTS ARE PLANNED WELL IN ADVANCE. IF HIS PLAN IS SUCCESSFUL, WE WON'T HAVE TIME TO GET THE NEW FUEL APPROVED BY THE FIA. IT'LL BE THE END OF THE COMPETITION FOR US.
16
WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO, LÉA?
WE’RE GOING TO SET A TRAP
HERE COMES THE DECOY TRUCK
AND THE OTHER ONE, THE ONE THAT'S REALLY CARRYING THE OIL?
WE’VE CHANGED ITS ITINERARY. IT’S GOING ROUND THE ALPS.
PUT YOUR FOOT DOWN!!
BINGO! RISK IS WAITING. LÉA SALVADOR !???
DAMN IT! WE’VE BEEN SPOTTED.
WHAT’S SHE DOING HERE? I’D BETTER SCRAM.
SNOOPING ENGINEERS! PATHETIC! LET’S SEE HOW YOU COPE WHEN THINGS GET SLIPPERY!
LOOK OUT! HE’S THROWING OIL ON THE ROAD!
PHEW… THAT WAS CLOSE.
YOU WERE RIGHT, HE SURE IS AN EXPERT IN LUBRICANTS.
17
MONZA, COLLECTIVE TESTING SESSION, FRIDAY BEFORE THE GRAND PRIX
LÉA, COME QUICK, THERE’S A PROBLEM.
WE’VE FOUND A LEAK UNDER ONE OF THE FUEL BARRELS. LOOK, SOMEONE HAS PLUGGED THE HOLES WITH MASTIC.
OK, SEND IT TO THE CHROMATOGRAPHY LAB.
THE FUEL IS CONTAMINATED. SOMEONE HAS ADDED AN OBSOLETE ADDITIVE: X27.
I KNOW WHO THAT WAS!
HAS THE FIA ALREADY BEEN TO TAKE ITS FUEL SAMPLE?
YES, AN HOUR AGO. BUT THEY’LL ONLY ANALYZE IT LATER.
WE HAVE TO STOP THE CARS FROM TAKING PART IN THE COLLECTIVE TESTING. IF THEY RUN ON CONTAMINATED FUEL, THEY’RE SURE TO BE DISQUALIFIED.
QUICK, STAN! GET TO THE FIA AND STOP THAT SAMPLE!
18
Fuel:
200 ingredients In 7 seconds, the Renault F1 Team mechanics change four wheels and feed around 70kg of fuel into the tank. Over 200 ingredients make up the fuel formulation. The specification reads: find more power, limitconsumption and encourage torque, making it better to drive. The tailor-made petrol used exclusively by the Renault RS26 V8 provides an extra 5% power, or over 40 horsepower, compared with a traditional fuel. As soon as the Elf engineers note a gain of 0.2 - 0.4%, they launch the production process. The fuel is made at a rate of 40,000 litres per manufacturing cycle (stored in 50 or 200-litre drums). The production of each batch requires seven days and keeps the team running for two to three months.
1 2
The role of fuel in the Renault F1 engine 1 Maximum vaporisation for better preparation of the airfuel mixture. This phase is crucial when filling the V8, in order to ensure optimum combustion. 2 Molecules selected by the engineers to ensure sufficiently rapid combustion, capable of burning all of the fuel-air mixture at 18,000 rpm. The aim is to achieve maximum power.
19
MA ! QUE “CASINO”
DID YOU SEE ANYONE GO NEAR THE BARRELS?
WELL, YES, BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS SOMEONE FROM THE TEAM.
A FUEL ENGINEER STOPPING A CAR??!!
LOOK, THERE!
WHERE DID HE GO?
HE LEFT THE GARAGE AND IT LOOKED LIKE HE WAS HEADED FOR THE FUEL DEPOT.
THE DOOR OF THE TRUCK IS OPEN!
START RINSING OUT THE CARS AND CHECK THAT THE FUEL BARRELS HAVEN’T BEEN CONTAMINATED. WE HAVEN’T GOT MUCH TIME BEFORE COLLECTIVE TESTING STARTS.
COME OUT, RISK! IT’S THE END OF THE ROAD FOR YOU.
20
THE RINSING PROCEDURE BEGINS
FASTER, FASTER!
OH MY GOD! HE’S CRAZY. HE’S HEADED TOWARDS THE TRACK!
YOU SHOULD THANK THE TOTAL TEAMS THAT WORKED ON THE BRAKE FLUIDS!
CHECKING OF THE OTHER BARRELS IT’S ALL OK. THERE'S NO CONTAMINATION. WE CAN GIVE SAMPLES TO THE FIA.
21
AND THEY’RE OFF! RENAULT IS OFF ON ITS FIRST TEST LAP… FINALLY!
A MONTH LATER THERE’S NO CONVINCING HIM. HE’S OBVIOUSLY STILL SULKING.
HEY, RISK, THE BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX’S ON. ARE YOU SURE YOU DON’T WANT TO COME AND WATCH?
SSSSHHHH! IT’S THE LAST LAP!
HA ! HA ! HA !
WHAT A MAGNIFICENT FINALE! MASSA WINS THE LAST GRAND PRIX OF THE SEASON IN HIS FERRARI.
THE 2006 SEASON HAS SEEN A SPECTACULAR DUEL BETWEEN FERNANDO ALONSO AND MICHAEL SCHUMACHER, RENAULT AND FERRARI.
AND IT ALL CAME DOWN TO THE FINAL ACT. ALONSO AND RENAULT BOTH HAVE CAUSE TO CELEBRATE. THE SPANIARD’S SECOND PLACE IN BRAZIL WAS ENOUGH TO SECURE HIM HIS SECOND CONSECUTIVE CHAMPIONSHIP AND, AFTER A SUPERB SEASON, RENAULT RETAINED THE CONSTRUCTORS’ TITLE.
HATS OFF TO MICHAEL SCHUMACHER WHO MADE A SPECTACULAR COMEBACK AFTER TYRE TROUBLE EARLY ON TO FINISH IN FOURTH. HE HAS REALLY SIGNED OFF FROM FORMULA 1 IN STYLE.
ALONSO DID THE RIGHT THING. HE DIDN'T TAKE ANY RISKS.
WELL, IF YOU WANT TO COME OUT ON TOP, RISK MANAGEMENT IS VITAL!
OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS, TOTAL’S FUELS AND LUBRICANTS HAVE ENABLED RENAULT F1 TEAM’S CARS TO GAIN THAT LITTLE BIT OF EXTRA HORSEPOWER THAT HAS HELPED ENSURE THEIR SUCCESS.
