Presentation The longest in the PRO range offering speed in all size waves for riders up to 95kg. Redistributed volume from the rails to the standing area maintaining stability with increased speed and reactivity. Tight pocket turning and vertical lip attacks are enhanced even further to handle all wave conditions. Available in Blue Carbon Technology. Bottom shape: “Continuous mono-concave” Monoconcave creates a flat rocker in the middle enhancing the curve on the rail for tight turning.

Presentation The most versatile and popular race board from elite to beginner riders that can performand win in all conditions. New design combines the All Star rail stability with the speed from the triple concave bottom shape of the 2015 Race, making it a winner on flatwater. Added nose volume and refined overall volume distribution made the hull easy and sensationally fast downwind. The bottom shape offers speed from the center channel, stability from the side planes and control from the sharp rail edge for surfing and downwind.

Flat water Stable and fast, the board is suitable for higher weight rider. The well-positioned handle, gives easy transport. The carbon version is top of the range. Light and durable for highlevel performance.

Flat Water The new shape of the board is extremely fast. The concave three made the technical board and performing. The new nose design increases the speed as it avoids that it is covered by water. Shaped by Mat Rauzier and Svein Rasmussen led the development with support from Titouan Puyo, Bart De Zwart, Zane Schweitzer, Beau O’Brian and Connor Baxter.

Wave riding In this discipline the board allows you to express the best. During take off the board shall start a gliding fast and grippy. The mono concave in the nose, you will start to take off vertical. Conclusion

”The vision hit me. fast drop, slam into a bottom turn, carve off the top, drive down the face, repeat. that’s it” Leonard Nika began surfing at age of 10 when his family moved from Torino to Rome near the coast in Italy. The passion for surfing has come natural to Leonard, it did not take much for the passion to become talent. After many surfing competitions around Italy, in the summer of 2008 Nika was introduced to Stand Up Paddling (SUP) and a few months after taking the first wave with a Stand up paddle board, he had already climbed the rankings in the Italian and European competitions both Wave and Race. Sponsored by Naish at the beginning, for two consecutive years, currently runs the world competing for the leading brand Starboard. Italian champion 4 time consecutive from 2012 to 2015, European champion Race 2012 and 2013, is one of the top 5 riders in the world.

In 2013 he ranked 1st place in the Eurosupa race standings and finished 2nd at the Race World Cup Event in Hamburg, Winning the Sup Paris Crossing in 2013, 3rd Place at the Stand up World Series in Barcelona in 2015. Completing his missions, Nika has ridden big waves on the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean, including Capo Mannu – Sardinia, Hossegor – France, Mundaka-Spain and Super Tubos Portugal. When Leonard is not busy traveling the World, he likes to teach stand up surfing and support the others who would like to approach this sport and show his training skills at his sup surf academy in Rome. What led you to become a product designer? It’s pretty much all I have ever done; I have always worked in product development. I built my first board when I was 15, and I guess I did have a hand in shaping that one with my friends, but it has always been something I am really passionate about. Could you take us through your design process and who your biggest shaping influence is? The process for me is very personal, for example with the Flying V, where it’s something I see as solving a problem. Developing short boards that work well in small waves for intermediate

Clinton Filen

surfers is something that is very close to me personally, because of the small waves we have in front of our offices in Muizenberg, and the fact that I’m an intermediate surfer. So some of those designs are very easy for me. I’m basically doing the classic product design process of solving a problem as best as I can. I’m not really that influenced by other shapers to be honest, although I have obviously worked a lot with traditional board designers like Svein Rasmussen and shaper Dave Stubbs who I really respect. For me, it’s always about tying to bring something new to a person. I’m always trying to give something new to people that nobody else is delivering, and that’s one of the challenges.

Flying V Designer

Having spent his entire life developing products for the wind and surf industry, racking up some serious water time in the process, Clinton currently calls the small coastal city of Cape Town home. We spent a morning catching up with Clint to learn more about his process and the recently released Flying V. You don’t consider yourself a shaper, why is that? I was born into an age of machines, so I just don’t consider myself a shaper or a craftsman. In my opinion, a shaper is a classic term for someone who creates something by hand, and my work has 19

always been shaped on a computer. So that’s why I refer to myself as a board designer, rather than a shaper. I also don’t make customs boards. I believe that we should deliver customers a resolved product, something that is well thought out. Even if I do sell somebody a once off, it is something that has been extensively researched and developed, and that’s why I believe we build better boards. We develop an idea completely before taking it to market. Only once we have refined it and gone through many iterations does it reach the consumer, and that’s a big difference from what a lot of our competitors are doing. 20

TlKl MAG

TlKl MAG

What was the concept behind the Flying V? The idea for me was to look at a classic fish and see what conditions it was traditionally best for, which is when waves are small and sloppy, and see how I could improve on this. The issue I have with a fish is that it has inherent weaknesses in terms of being able to ride top to bottom. So I wanted to take that relaxed approach of how you would surf a fish, with the classic style and riding fluid lines, while also driving the product through the turns nicely. Traditionally with a fish, you kind of go down the line and any time you wanted to do something very critical the board would turn very flat. You know it wouldn’t really be good at going around corners either, so I

21

How long did the development process you would kind of get what I like to call take from concept to creation? ‘hunting,’ where the nose doesn’t really go where you want it to until you engage It was a complicated board and it the other rail or fin set. probably took us a year in development. So what we did was introduce the Flying We have developed quite a few boards V bottom shape (where the board name for small surf such as the Ultra and came from) and that was the break other very dedicated super small wave through. Getting a lot of stability out of shapes, but with the Flying V we were the bottom shape, then being able to looking to improve consistency and almost use the fins to loosen up the drive. To do this, we started to find things board and the overall feel of the ride. such as bringing the Tri-Fin feel into the fish shape in order to improve overall What are the benefits of the deep performance. TlKl MAG

Flex Carbon Technology was used in the construction of this board? What are benefits of Flex Carbon for this board?

Could you give us a breakdown of the rest of the board shape? If you look at the nose, it’s pretty narrow. What this helps to do is pull the nose around at the end of your top turn if you don’t have a lot of power and you want to come and kick back into say, a round house or something. Having a lot of curve in the front of the nose really helps to do this. In terms of the total width of the board, it’s a really wide board with good planing area, not as wide as say the Ultra, but the width is the key for really getting going when its super small. 23

We wanted something that you could still stomp the tail and throw into a nice powerful or snappy turn with. So by bringing in the wingers, the tail is now relatively narrow and that’s a big differentiation again over a fish.

We are basically able to reduce the weight with the use of carbon fiber, which is stronger than standard glass fiber too. So you have the benefit of a stronger deck, and because it’s biaxial, you still get the flex characteristics of a traditional glass board because none of the carbon fiber is running longitudinally. We were also able to take the stinger out so that you have a board that’s really flexible and responsive. What type of surfer is the Flying V designed for? Could anyone pick it up and have a blast? We originally developed it as an intermediate small wave board, although some of our more advanced testers have really started to enjoy it; riding it a little bit smaller, they have been really amazed by the flexibility and capabilities of the board. 24

TlKl MAG

How does this board go, and what conditions is it best suited for? Small waves, you are looking kind of 1 – 4 foot where it would excel. Those would be its ideal conditions. Can it still surf OK outside of its “ideal” conditions, or is it pretty specific? It’s quite good with choppy conditions because of the bottom shape too, although it is quite specific. Once you start getting over four foot it would be a real handful, there’s a lot of fin and a lot of board, so you could surf it but it wouldn’t be in its ideal zone. Keep it in the 1 – 4 foot range and it’s a really fun board. What’s next for Starboard Surf and yourself? We have been playing with quite a few

25

TlKl MAG

interesting projects in our development shop, but I can’t say what will be refined enough to take to market right now. We have made some really interesting developments on pure entry level shapes. Some of the more performance thinking is around inverted V designs in the Streetfighter concept, or the negative side cut outline, combined with the deep V from the Flying V; this is our Flying Squirrel concept. These ideas try to solve a similar problem from opposite directions, which is always a really interesting process. As always, we focus on having something really resolved, instead of just chasing fashion, so before we expect anyone to drop money on one of our new shapes, we’ll run through our usual R&D and testing. You’ll hear more on those concepts soon I’m sure.

Matteo Iachino

We at Starboard are pleased to announce the arrival of Matteo Iachino in our ranks. Matteo has shown great potential in the past year and we’re looking forward to see what he will achieve in 2016 with iSonics under his feet.

Following the PWA Noumea World Cup, Matteo came by the Starboard headquarters in Thailand to sign his contract, meet the team, pick up his boards and answers a few questions we had for him. Starboard: Welcome to the team Matteo. What attracted you to sign with us? Matteo Iachino: If you ask around, the general opinion is that Starboard are special in slalom. The iSonic is the board to be on. If you look at the performance of Starboard over the years, it’s been consistently number 1 on the PWA Constructor’s podium. They have the best boards and the strongest team, so if you can get in Starboard with a good deal it’s like a dream come true. Starboard: In the beginning were you apprehensive to join such a big team? Matteo: No, not at all. It’s true that it’s a big team but that’s good because there are a lot of riders with different abilities. Starboard have the young guys, the experienced riders and everyone else in between. I can learn from each one of them. And in the end, you compete with everyone, even if you’re on the same team or not. Starboard: There are currently a lot of riders around your age. However you seem to be on somewhat of a different level, what do you think you are doing differently? Matteo: Ha thanks, I don’t know exactly but I feel like I trained a lot in the last three years, especially in winter time. I was just focused on getting the results, because it’s the most important thing I can have in my life at this point. At one stage, I arrived at a point where I decided it was my main goal, so I started to work hard for it and I haven’t stopped since. If you work hard for something, only fill your mind with it, and if you don’t get too stressed then it’s going to work out.

35

36

TlKl MAG

TlKl MAG

Starboard: You just visited us in Thailand, how did you like it? Matteo: Being in Thailand was great. I got to see a different culture, see where Starboard’s headquarters were based, how the team worked together. I got to explore the workshop as an “employee” but also as a regular windsurfing fan, which was fantastic. Thailand is a breathtaking country that really opens your mind. Starboard: We heard you’ve also joined on an R&D trip with Remi, how was that? Matteo: It was super! It’s great to be recognized as a member of the R&D team at Starboard. To have the opportunity to develop the boards that I am going to use next season is priceless. As a result, you feel the board is like your property because you developed it, and you know it from the inside-out. This will certainly give me an advantage over the competition. Starboard: What’s the difference between sailing for R&D compared to sailing in competition? Matteo: There is quite a big difference. When you sail for R&D you need to focus and try to think about how you actually race, and copy that style. You have to put the board in the position that is similar to your racing stance and only then you can be sure of your opinion. You also have to be confident when sharing your impressions and sticking to your decisions. Starboard: Did you have a set goal to be World champion before a certain time? Matteo: My only set goal was to be a full professional windsurfer before I was 25 years old, that was my only goal. I loved windsurfing and my aim was to be a pro. I achieved my goal in time, and since then I’ve been getting better and better. The progression is perfect. So now, I would obviously love to be World Champion as soon as possible, and I will work hard for it. The level is super high and I’m very close so let’s see what will happen this year. Starboard: Thanks a lot for the answers Matteo. We wish you a very successful year in the Starboard Dream Team.

SAN DIEGO, California - In 2015 SUP expeditioner Bart de Zwart set off on the trip of a lifetime where he traveled around the world in 27 days with friend and photographer Franz Orsi. The twosome flew around the world with inflatable SUPs from Starboard SUP to the corners of the world. Starting the trip off in the Pacific then heading to Asia, Africa, Europe and Central America, de Zwart and Orsi traveled to and met with remote civilizations with strong connections to the water. The first stop on the world SUP excursion took place on a tiny island in Micronesia called Yap. This beautiful island and its inhabitants welcomed de Zwart and Orsi with open arms. From here they flew to Kathmandu, Nepal when a day or so after arriving, disaster struck with a devastating earthquake. After a few days in Nepal it was off to the next destination in a remote village called Omo Valley in Ethiopia. Here de Zwart and Orsi intrigued the locals with the sport of stand up paddling and taught many of the local children how to SUP. The next stop took the twosome to Istanbul, Turkey where they explored and captured the beauty of the city from their paddle boards. When it was time to leave Turkey, de Zwart and Orsi headed towards their final destination of Sayulita, Mexico for the ISA World SUP and Paddle Board Championships. With 2 boards, 1 tent, 5 continents, 19 flights, and 27 days you could easily call this trip the Ultimate Crossing. Take a look at the documentary from their trip in the video below.

Surf Snowdonia is the worlds first public Wave Garden, an artificial wave technology developed in Spain. The wave pool is located in North Wales, UK and opens to the public tomorrow 1st August 2015. This week Surf Snowdonia’s SUP sponsors Starboard UK hosted Starboard International riders Zane Schweitzer, Izzi Gomez, Sean Poynter and Finn Mullen at Surf Snowdonia during the final testing stages of the wave. SUPboarder was on location and captured some of the first SUP surfing action on the UK’s first artificial wave! Surfers all over the world have been patiently waiting for the completion of this monumental project in the beautiful North Wales mountains. In the week before opening four Starboard international riders were invited to this iconic wave pool to test out the wave. Braving the chilly waters of North Wales were World SUP surfing champions Izzi Gomez and Sean Poynter, 2015 world title contender, and innovator of SUP surfing Zane Schweitzer and big wave charger Finn Mullen. Starboard UK are SUP partners to the Surf Snowdonia project and are working closely with Surf Snowdonia to promote not only SUP surfing but flat water SUP on the stunning rivers and lakes in the surrounding areas and whitewater SUP on the technical rivers of North Wales.

Artificial waves bring a new dimension to surfing – incredible consistency means you can learn fast and improve your skills whether you are a pro or a beginner – they present a great opportunity.

51

However, although they try to mimic perfection, they are also challenging to dial into and riders shouldn’t expect to shred on their first wave.

Learning to take off and ride this wave is challenging but when you break the barrier and if you have the right mindset you will be able to improve faster than ever before.

Starboard UK and Palm Equipment UK team rider Sam Ross gives his opinion of the wave, why its unique and why he will be using it in the future to better his SUP surfing.

Climate Change We are racing towards a two degree increase in global warming. This statistic is, of any the most important number for Climate Change negotiations. Scientists agree that if we pass two degrees of global warming the consequences for us humans on earth will be too big and too dramatic to handle. If we continue business as usual as we do it today earth will most likely be 3-4 degrees warmer by 2100 – thats in only 85 years. Even though it is dark and heavy to think about, it gives us a world of opportunities. Fact is that we are the first generation to know that we are capable to wipe out the entire earth ecosystem system, and we are also probably the last generation that still has time to do something about it. The urge for a sustainable transitions comes from many directions and the global target is 0 emission by 2050. It translates in to a carbon budget that will be shared in a fair way among all people on earth. But is it only up to World’s leaders to provoke a change?

67

TlKl MAG

Many brands, actors and artists clearly makes clear statements to inspire more people to think and be responsible for our environment. There are no methods stronger than real action. Many business leaders has already committed to a Sustainable development and hope they can inspire others to do the same. The B-Team for example, which is a group of Business executives who wants to be in the forefront of sustainable business – initiated by Richard Branson and CEO of Puma Joachim Sights recently announced that they have committed to achieve 0 emissions not by 2050 but by 2030. Starboard is another brand that has been pushing a more sustainable development over the last few years. Their target is to minimize and eventually become 0 emission, -and to help bind/mitigate emissions that is already in the atmosphere. Nature has a remarkable way of healing itself from pollution, but sometimes we must help secure its own resources. Blue Forests has proved to be of significant help in the better and safer climate battle.

68

TlKl MAG

TlKl MAG

Heal Nature with Nature Starboards commitment continues beyond managing their own business. Over the last years they have invested in Blue Carbon projects and most importantly restorations of Mangrove trees. Worldview International Foundation has specialized in Mangroves and they operate the Thor Heyerdahl Climate Park, situated in the MaGyi area in Myanmar. Mangroves are one of the most efficient trees on the planet when it comes to mitigating and storing CO2. The tree grows in salt water. Like any other trees Mangrove photosynthesis and capture the carbon through their leafs that eventually ends up in to the soil after the leafs drops to the ground. But since Mangroves live in ocean tides – sometimes fully in water and sometimes in swamps, they have a very broad and shallow root system that they trap the river sediment with. By doing so they not only trap the carbon that they have created through photosynthesis, they also trap the carbon that is coming from the river and the mountains. Because the root system is so shallow, pretty much just on the surface, there is no oxygen in the sediment underneath them. When its no oxygen in the soil the carbon does not oxide in to Carbon Dioxide, the carbon remains. Protecting Mangroves is a comprehensive task that goes far beyond just planting trees. There has to be a solid plan to secure the land for at least 30 years. This includes alternative and sustainable livelihood for the local people, healthcare and education for local kids and scholarship to universities to mention a few of the challenges. Worldview International Foundation has come a long way with Mangrove parks in Myanmar and we feel privileged to be bale to help and support Thor Heyerdahl Climate Park. Before the end of the year 1 million Mangrove trees will be planted in the park and there is much more to be done next year. 69

Depuis, je suis l’intégralité du Stand Up World Tour !

103

sports préférés. Quel bonheur !

This extraordinary landscape seems to be of another world, Lanzarote is of volcanic origin, as the other islands of the archipelago as well, but here volcanos have been active still in 18th and 19th century. Great parts of its surface are covered with ashes and lava, making you feel that you were on the moon, for this reason there are very different amasing spot, like beach brake and rock spot with beautiful background landscapes. In last surf trip in lanzarote when to to Southwest side of the island, the most invested by lava and engoied various spots of volcanic rock. 119
