Grecanica. Identità e visioni per la rinascita di un territorio del margine. Master thesis, Architecture and Urban Design, Politecnico di Milano.
The classification of inner areas in 2012 furthered the debate on the problems in the country’s rural and mountainous areas since World War II: depopulation and abandonment. Knowledge of these fragile territories is of crucial importance for their survival today. This thesis examines these issues starting with the study of a particularly identifiable territory, the Grecanica Area of Calabria, to explore a vision of future development. The first part of the research defines the phenomenon of depopulation on a national scale, investigating its causes and consequences. Fundamental is the approach with which the analysis is carried out: in addition to the quantitative dimension, it aims to investigate the social and urban aspects and how different characteristics are present from territory to territory. Finally, current policies are analyzed by comparing them with a collection of case studies of interventions and projects implemented in places of high depopulation or abandonment. The second part studies an area where this phenomenon is inevitably marking its becoming: the Grecanica Area. The distinctive features of these places are explored: the particular morphology, the uniqueness of its history and tradition, and the communities living there. The analyses travel on two parallel tracks: on the one hand, the phenomena that have led this Area to become the extreme of the extreme of Italy are analyzed; on the other hand, opportunities and strengths are recounted in order to identify material and immaterial resources from which to restart and be reborn, making the landscape and identity of this place the real engine of development. The third part proposes a picture of a possible vision of the future, a framework within which to develop a territorial strategy of rebirth for the Grecanica Area. The strategy focuses on the Amendolea Valley and explores some possible punctual project proposals, strategically distributed throughout the territory based on accessibility and travel criteria, which aim to introduce or redistribute essential services, implement alternative mobility solutions and enhance ongoing cultural projects in the area.

Casa da Dança, no Frexio Projecto 4, FAUP, Porto, Portugal.
The following project was the subject of a course taken during the Erasmus year at the Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto. The focus of Projecto 4 is on the city of Porto, in the eastern district of Freixo. This is an area that was originally formed without the support of a master plan, as an industrial area with medium/ large plants together with small support industries and complementary services. The difficulty of access to the lower levels, the decommissioning of production facilities, and the abandonment and demolition of part of the buildings all contribute to an image of degradation and urban periphery that needs to be reversed and qualified. As a design exercise, the objective was the design of a Dance School, called ‘Casa da dança’, similar to the other two Houses (of architecture and music), completing

the triad of cultural facilities, strategically located in the metropolitan area of Porto. The developed project takes into consideration the obligation to maintain the body of the old power station still existing in the lot defined for the intervention, rehabilitating and expanding it in order to fulfil and satisfy the defined functional programme. The functional programme of the project includes a university residence, a dance school and an auditorium. These three functions are housed in three separate interconnected buildings. In particular, the auditorium space (located inside the old power station) is joined to the dance school with the main entrance hall.

In scena Chiaravalle Laboratorio di Resaturo, PoliMi
The development of the project In scena Chiaravalle allowed the complex process of study, analysis and architectural restoration project to be faced, paying particular attention, through functional, compositional and technological choices, to the conservation of the existing and the compatibility of the new. The project theme involves the reuse of the guest house building of the Abbey of Chiaravalle (founded by St. Bernard of Clairvaux in 1135), in the southeast area of Milan. The challenge proposed by the teachers in the laboratory course was to make compositional, material and formal choices taking into account the principle of distinguishability of the new from the existing, of compatibility, reversibility and minimum intervention. The aim of the project is to create a cultural centre in the heart of Chiaravalle. A

creative forge where theatre, dance and parish activities develop and increase the sociality of children and young people, to whom the project is mainly addressed, becoming a point of reference in the area. The project finds in art its vital spirit, but also diversified opportunities for income, indispensable to the economic sustainability of abbey life and management. This is why the motto ‘In scena Chiaravalle’ (on stage, Chiaravalle!) wants to put a spotlight on the territorial and landscape reality in which the abbey is immersed and on the new leisure, education and entertainment opportunities proposed by the intervention.

Territorial Analysis. The territory of the Lecce Marines today presents a landscape that is the result of the ‘settlement littoralisation’ that has taken place since the second half of the 20th century. The construction of unauthorised dwellings right up to the beaches, without planning (with individual definition of settlement spaces and pertinences) and lack of urbanisation works have damaged the naturalness and landscape value of the marine sites of excellence on the Apulian coast. Project Phase. The project plans to guide the natural environment through its intrinsic process of resilience, favouring the renaturalisation of the coastal territory. The landscape that we imagine could be created in the next hundred years will be characterised by several natural ecosystems that, intersecting, will find a way to coexist: the coastal lagoon with its sandbanks, the dune and the beach, the coastal pine forest and the new design interventions of the flood parks, which will be inserted starting from the lagoon and unravelling up to the urban centres of the Torre Chianca and Spiaggiabella marinas. A.Wa.Re! Adaptive Waterways Regeneration
Competition “Tactical Urbanism - Redefining the contemporary city in order to face rapid changes and to improve the adaptability of public spaces”. Nowadays, drought is one of the extreme negative effects of the climate crisis raging on earth. Canal beds lie without water for long periods of the year and perhaps, in the future, it will leaving forever these artificial impermeable surfaces exposed. What‘s next for this linear system, which no longer serve its original function ? The project explores the possibility of reusing and re-functionalizing dry canal beds as an extension of the city’s public space. The project concept is to develop a network of linear public spaces that, starting with activation “pilot projects”, can expand over time, colonizing the city’s dried-up canals. This project is developed along the corso Naviglio Martesana (a canal), within the city of Milan. The intervention is set in a possible future, when there will no longer be water inside the canal. The aim is to create a new public space and return it to the community. To do this, a system of modular platforms has been designed.

Period: Mar 23 - May 23 Group work with Chiara Centoducati, Federica Fazio, Giulia Martignoni, Valeria Mastroianni, Greta Petrarca. The intervention consists of creating a 2 km long path in which four areas have been identified, intervening with the extension of elements already present in the settlement context: the first area, like the fourth, corresponds to a playground designed for children; in the second space, the focus is more on sports, with areas that define different stations such as aerobics, dance and yoga; the third space is the local market, located in the most central position of the project. This specific location was chosen because the canal site is larger and allows for the installation of more platforms, in combination with the nearby urban gardens. The fourth and last block of platforms is dedicated to relax: here we find hammocks placed within a space enriched with scented essences and medicinal herbs, useful for calming stress and cultivating hobbies such as gardening.

Tra strade, ferro, boschi e vigneti... Workshop “Atelier di esplorazione territoriale Dora Baltea”.
The workshop was carried out across the river territories of the Dora Baltea, with the aim of exploring their potential for use and spatial quality at the intersection of environmental, hydraulic and settlement issues. The activity was an integral part of the actions of the Dora Baltea River Contract. The objective of the workshop was to propose a project in reaction to the actions of the River Contract, but starting from the direct study of this territory. The workshop shared a style of direct investigation that interpreted the survey and exploration as an indispensable way of investigating a territory, recalling much of the thinking of Burckhardt, the founder of promenadology. The route that my team and I studied was the one furthest north, on the border with Valle d’Aosta. It ran through Settimo Vittone, Tavagnasco, Quincinetto and Carema. During the first phase of the workshop, during the direct study through a sort of itinerant site visit, we realised how that portion of the territory was strongly characterised not only by the presence of woods and typical vineyards, but also by the passage of three different types

They run longitudinally and parallel to the valley with very few points of interchange between them. The general objective of the river contract is the socio-economic, tourist and recreational enhancement of the Dora Baltea basin with the specific aim of protecting the rural heritage and promoting sustainable agricultural and tourist activities. With our project proposal, we wanted to connect the opposite sides of the valley with transversal routes that unite slow mobility (of the Via Francigena) and fast mobility through pedestrian and bicycle paths with inter-mobility hubs (understood as an exchange between train, car, bus, bicycle and pedestrian). They are identified in railway stations that are no longer used, through the reactivation of the railway node and the design of spaces for the exchange of slow/fast mobility.
