The studied area for the thesis is historically known as Piana dei Colli, situated in the north of Palermo. In this area has been, since the early sixties, a significant phenomenon of urban expansion. This phenomenon, due to the characteristics of speculation and the involvement of mafia, politics and local interests, has been called "Sacco di Palermo". The expansion towards North follows the criteria of speculation: the most economical and low-tech choices.

It uses a single linear typology on regular urban grid based on a matrix from nineteenth century. This determines the lost of potential of the framed structure but also of the experimentations of the modern movement. The material used, the concrete, is now in a state of obvious deterioration. The proposal starts from finding deficiencies and needs in the area under study, and focuses on conversion and redevelopment using the intrinsic potential. "Learning from the existing, for an architect, is a way of being revolutionary". Rearrange what already exists, in order to find new forms of aggregation and to create new situations that define the urban identity and improve the livability of the area.
This research starts from a reading of urban materials. With an "archaeological" method I made a comparison between the historical maps and the current urban plan. From this reading I identified a curvilinear road network adjacent to the straight main road (viale Strasburgo). The curved road path drags behind a number of urban situations, pockets, plazas, squares, passages under buildings or below ground level, becoming a complex structure.
1956
The buildings don’t make the road The area behind the Villa Pantelleria is the sample area on which the attention is focused. The buildings have a free position within the orthogonal grid, but they still keep a close relationship with the road that enters between them. According to the principles of the modern movement, the landscape should make the structure, and not the road. "The buildings don’t make the road": this is the starting point of the proposal, which consists of the following targets and operations.

The city of Rostock is recently developing the Petriviertel. Section 090 North, the new quarter ‚Zur Stadt – im Land – am Fluss’ is one main part of it. The character and qualities of the site are significant: there is a remarkable view towards the historical silhouette of Rostock (Stadt), it is well connected with the recreational landscape (Land) and close to the river Warnow (Fluss). The design correlates the three different qualities of the site with three different ways of living. Compact living in the ‚ring’, where efficient floor plans are combined with shared luxury. Living with two orientations in the ‚rows’, where the open floor plans guarantee a connection towards the landscape and the green inner courtyard. Panorama- Living in the towers, where spacious penthouse- apartments celebrate the open view towards the riverbed of Warnow. The main purpose of the design is to guarantee a large variation of typologies for all kind of different ways of living. At the same time the three different types of living within one quarter should be related through the same architectonical identity. The quarter is well connected, meanwhile private and shared spaces combine different areas. The material and structure of the elevations are divergent but related through a similar quality of design. The design of the facades (two faces) contributes to this idea. Faced towards the streets there character is rather ‘hard’, faced towards the inner courtyard, there character is rather ‘soft’.
