Referenda Referenda are the way that we make big decisions about the future of the Students’ Union. They are a vote of all students on a single question.
The Referenda Questions 2016 are: Do you agree that the Students’ Union should remain affiliated with the NUS?
Do you agree to the Student Leadership recommendations to create Action Networks and make changes to Students’ Union Council membership and powers as specified under Bye-Law 3?
Should the Students' Union actively campaign for the UK to remain in the European Union?
Do you agree to Students’ Union Council’s proposed amendments to the Students’ Union Constitution and Bye-Laws?
You can read all the proposals in full at sheffieldsu.com/thestudentvoice and get involved by coming along to the Referenda 2016 Big Debate on Monday 29th February 2016 5:30pm in the Students’ Union Auditorium to hear what other students think about these big questions and to have your say!

We elect an Honorary President every 3 years. There are no set criteria for being nominated to the post. Past Honorary Presidents have included: • Those with a connection to the city of Sheffield • Alumni of the University of Sheffield • Individuals who have made a contribution either nationally or internationally to activism, campaigning or the principles of the Students’ Union

Dr. Helen Sharman is the first Briton to have gone into space and became only the second woman to visit a space station, she is now the President of the Institute of Science and Technology. She was born in Sheffield and studied chemistry at our university, serving as a great ambassador for the City and the University.
Assata Shakur Assata Shakur is an African-American activist and member of the former Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army. Assata taught us that ‘no one is going to give you the education you need to overthrow them.’ She is the embodiment of Sheffield Students’ Union’s commitment to liberation and international peace & justice.

Student Trustee Candidates 2016 The Board of Trustees is the group of people with ultimate responsibility for everything that the Students' Union does. It is responsible for the governance of the Students’ Union and the financial and strategic management of the organisation. There are 17 people on the board; 8 SU Officers, 4 external trustees, 3 appointed student trustees and we also elect 2 Student Trustees to the board each year!
Billy Bryan
I believe that I would make an effective student trustee, but a statement like that doesn't cut the mustard without the proper experience and skills to back it up. In just one year of being at the university, I have been heavily involved in the representation of students. I co-founded the postgraduate representative committee, on which I currently sit as housing and welfare officer, working closely with students and the union officers. I currently sit on the SU council representing PGR students. I am also the co-chair for my departmental society and have recently won funding to improve module delivery. As a PhD researcher, I study how the student experience can be enhanced using teaching innovations and student-centred feedback approaches. This means that I not only care for PG student's interests, but UG student's interests as well. I feel that I have a real grasp of what matters to students at our university, and I know I am well equipped to fight for them as a trustee. As your elected student trustee, my objectives are as follows: 1. To represent and protect the interests of all UG and PG students, taking into account their diverse backgrounds and complex needs. 2. To be actively mindful of the potential impact the trustee board will have on future students when creating and implementing the union's strategy. 3. To ensure that the trustee board allocates its budget openly and responsibly, with the student experience as the top priority. Don’t be silly, vote for Billy!
Parsa Pirhady
Diversity is strength I am Parsa Pirhady and I am an international student. The main reason I am running for the trustee position is to bring one more international voice to the table because just one international officer to represent the vast number of overseas students is simply not enough. I am very passionate about the Student’s Union and the community I live in. For instance I am a Block Rep and during the last term I helped to support and organise more than 10 events, such as Secret Santa and Christmas flat decoration competition. I am also involved in SU societies. As the social secretary of SASH committee I help and lead a week of events with a theme of Humanism and Mental Health, in which we had many speakers coming to Sheffield just for this event that required a lot of work between different departments and people. I also volunteer for two different volunteering groups which gave me more access to local charities. All these events taught me so many new skills, which I think will be very useful as a trustee to have. So I am asking you to vote for me because I care a lot about the Student’s union, furthermore I want international students to be represented more, however this does not mean I will completely forget about home students. I have gained a fair amount of experience which I will use, if elected, to make the environment we live in a better place.
Mathy Selvakumaran
My name is Mathy, and I’m running to be Student Trustee because I want to be involved in making our the Students' Union even better. Some of you may not know this, but I’ve been a member of our SU for 8 years. (I know, right?!) I did my undergrad and master’s degrees here, and I’m currently studying for my PhD. I have several years of experience in various societies and committees in the SU, and I also work in the SU Marketing department. I believe the leadership and teamwork skills that I have developed in these roles will make me an excellent fit for the job. Being a member of the SU has shaped me as a person, and I want to give something back to the organisation which has provided me with so many opportunities and experiences over the years. I will bring important perspectives on a wide range of issues to this job, and I will ensure that the trustee board actively reflects the many varied experiences of SU life. I have seen the SU evolve and change so much in the time that I’ve been a student here. As Trustee I will ensure that our SU has a clear vision and strategic direction for the future, one which considers your ideas and concerns and acts in your best interests. So do the math - vote Mathy for Student Trustee!
Brennan Gibson
My name is Brennan Gibson, I have spent a good portion of my life doing charity work such as one year volunteering as a classroom assistant in a school for disadvantaged kids in Belfast, also one year as a young leader at my local scout troop. Shortly after this I spent over a month in Bali, in Indonesia, volunteering for R.O.L.E foundation working with young kids and helping to prevent environmental destruction, through education all over Bali. Most recently I went on a two week trip to Delhi to work with ASHA in the slums of Kalkaji where myself and some school friends taught english and worked to brighten up schools and community centres in the slum, painting their buildings, playing cricket with the locals, and using some of our £20,000 raised to provide solar lights to allow slum kids to do schoolwork at night. Along with charity, I’m also passionate about sports and education, having been a rower for 6 years I would love to see Sheffield University Rowing Club take its rowing to new heights. As an appointed trustee you can expect me to work towards these three main goals, which are: Improving on the already superb charity work that Sheffield students conduct and ensuring that every penny raised goes to incredible charities worth the effort. Pushing for greater funding for university sport in order to achieve higher national recognition. Furthermore, assisting with students' every day problems, such as crippling debt and incredible external pressure to succeed.
