Creating Strength for the Future

Dear Penn Stater:

Since it was established in 1855 on land donated by a central Pennsylvanian business leader, the institution now known as Penn State has been a pioneer in higher education, and philanthropy has been both its inspiration and its strength. Through a series of successful campaigns, the University has secured an endowment of more than $1.8 billion, creating and sustaining programs ranked among the best of their kind. Today, Penn State receives more applications for admission than any other college or university in the country, and it is the leading producer nationwide of Fulbright Scholars as well as one of the top ten institutions in the country for research expenditures, as ranked by the National Science Foundation.

From the success of THON to the generosity of more than 75,000 alumni who support the University every year, giving back is an essential part of the Penn State spirit. No one knows this better than graduates like you who have chosen careers in fundraising and advancement. Through your example and enthusiasm, you are helping to strengthen organizations and institutions around the country, and some of you are sharing your talents and dedication with your own alma mater. Whether you work at the University or elsewhere, you understand what it means to be a Penn Stater and a development professional. And I am asking you to draw upon that understanding to help us build our development team at Penn State. In the coming months, I will be sending you occasional emails highlighting some of our staff and the fundraising program as well as seeking your input on issues facing higher education fundraising. I’ll also share listings for open fundraising positions and information about the rewards of working at Penn State. I would appreciate your assistance in finding the very best candidates for roles on our team. Please consider

The Office of University Development is an essential partner in that success. With more than 310 employees working together on the central level and at colleges and campuses across University Park and the Commonwealth, our team is recognized across higher education as a leader in the field of fundraising. Dedicated offices for research and prospect management, gift planning, and annual giving, among others, support the work of frontline fundraisers who secure more than 300,000 gifts each year.

whether there are individuals in your network of colleagues and peers who could contribute to our success. We need advancement leaders, established or emerging, who believe in the importance of public higher education and who want to be a part of a top fundraising team. A career at Penn State can provide competitive pay and exceptional benefits, strong local communities where families and individuals thrive, and challenges and opportunities that will help every development professional to grow.

The majority of our positions are based at the University Park campus, located in State College, Pennsylvania. State College is ranked among the lowest-stress and safest small cities in the country, and along with the surrounding communities of Centre County, it offers excellent public schools, beautiful public parks and other natural assets, and a broad range of cultural and athletic events and venues, including the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts and a minor league baseball stadium shared with the University.

If you know anyone who might be interested in helping Penn State to fulfill its potential as a leader in higher education, please ask them to contact us at 814-865-0964 or advancementprofessionals@psu.edu; you can also share their contact information with us, and we will reach out to them directly. And if you yourself are interested in coming home to Penn State as a development professional, we would be delighted to hear from you. Our alumni are among our most powerful advocates, whether they are working as members of our fundraising team or representing us through their accomplishments in the larger world. Thank
