“Form encompasses a harmony of systems, a sense of Order, and that which distinguishes one existence from another. Form is the realization of a nature, made up of inseparable elements. Form has no shape or dimension. It is completely inaudible, unseeable. It has no presence; its existence is in the mind. You turn to nature to make it actually present. Form precedes Design. Form is “what.” Design is “how”. Form is impersonal; Design belongs to the designer.“

Between Silence and Light Spirit in the Architecture of Louis I. Kahn John Lobell & Louis I. Kahn.

IZMIR MAIN TRANSFER CENTER Competition Entry June 2020 Pre - Concept Design Team : Gizem Kadıoğlu Miray Altındiş Lara Hekimoğlu

Architect Architect Architect

The Project area is in a valuable location due to its easy access to the city’s connecting roads and also its proximity to the city’s major points. The connection from the surrounding provinces can be easily provided without affecting the city. However, it has been determined that due to its closed standing around the existing bus station, this area has become a place that serves a single purpose. The cement factory and concrete plant located in the immediate vicinity of the project area is also strengthening this determination. Our project was designed to serve a dynamic program during the design phase of izmir Main Transfer Center and it is intended to continue the traces of this dynamic effect in mass. The new metro stop in the region and accessibility to the high-speed train are aimed at making the design part of the city’s active life. At the beginning of the design process, mass editing was based on the current but weak circulation and accessibility axles. Maintaining these axles strongly has provided accessibility from residential areas to the main transfer center. Due to the current viaduct project, the facade located in izmir Ring Road Bus Station Link has taken effect on a buffer zone and aimed to remove the atmosphere in the square from the highways. Due to the lack of green spaces in the vicinity, both green and public spaces have been created.

Urban voids created by the abandoned railways induce a network of connectivity which should be re-designed and be opened to the city and its users, with a certain level of flexibility and attainability. Such existing network creates an immerse opportunity in terms of creating a city wide design connection and the railroads in this sense are great assets for the project, and they are revalued as a design tool. Each modular design unit can be moved anywhere within the network thanks to custom carriage system moving along the rails. Primary analysis on the network of Petit Ceinture shows the potential of these spaces and how important it is to maintain the naturality of these voids with minimized interventions. In this regard, to contradict against today’s mass production and consumption-centred mentality, the project aims to “re-invent” an existing construction element, the scaffoldings, and to convert it into a possible design element to reduce the cost and natural impact, whilst increasing the design flexibility, modular usage and ease of access.

Public Space and Functions: Contemporary public spaces can exist as being in respect to the past, as well as being forward looking in the sense of new urban types such as, shared spaces or relational spaces that are diversified typological hybrids. The mono-functional large voids of the urban fabric provides extraordinary opportunities to experiment new open spaces that consist new kind of relationship between its users and its design methodology. The architectural functions proposed in the project feature open air cinema, public library, flea market, aquaponics station, bar, urban farming, leisure and service areas, circled by green areas and interconnected through different connection paths. These functions can vary between the floors as well, given the fact that the expansions can also be in vertical and being able to connect different levels of the cityscape. Depending on the demand on different functions (that could vary over external factors such as seasWon/time/urban policies and so on) the modules can change and expand accordingly. The easy assembly responds to this need of adaptability and is the main theoretical approach for the choice of modular but light structures that are able to create space of activities with the choice and direction of its users.

AIDARA HOUSE Single Family House November 2019- April 2020 Concept Design-Design Development-Tender Design Team : Oğuzhan Güler Gizem Kadıoğlu Miray Altındiş Adem Boz

Project Architect Architect Architect Architect /3d Visualization

The building is designed as a multi-layered and multifunctional residence which not only caters for the Aidara family but also acts as an office for the family business as well as a formal reception for visitors. There is nevertheless a strong need to distinguish its public functions from the private needs of a large and complex family. It is therefore treated as a ‘village’ which brings together all of these needs in what is a relatively small site. With so many functions and a great deal of public / private separation it is possible to think of this as a village complex of disparate and distinct elements much like in a traditional village with an expression of the main hierarchies through roof forms reminiscent of traditional village forms in Congo. We achieved this by wrapping the functions around the perimeter of the site, and enclosing the private family hearth in a courtyard, which is protected from the outside. The courtyard also brings a large opening in to the plan which allows the house to breathe. The elements of the ‘Village’ are expressed in roof forms which are in stone, and also separated by passage ways and galleries to allow both privacy and permeability to people and the wind. The air passes through this house easily, so that even in the hot and humid months it will be possible to allow the east / west winds to pass through and cool the house naturally.Timber screens like ‘mashrabiya’ are used everywhere so that the family can protect itself from visual intrusion while allowing the air to pass through. So when someone looks over from the other side of the valley they may see nothing. But through the veil of the screens the family can see everything outside. Much of the life of the house goes on in its heart around the pool and the inner courtyard gardens, which are dominated by a tall traditional family tree. It is allowed to grow beyond the house. Scope & duties: • Site Approach • Detail Design • Stair & Vertical Garden Design • Interior Design • Drawings of the Plans, Elevations, Sections, System Details, Ceiling plans and details, ,Point details of the roof structure and skylights. • Graphic Design and Presentations. 31

LIBREVILLE GOVERNMENTAL COMPLEX November 2019 Pre - Concept Design Team : Arda Can Buze Ece Çakır Aidan Tolgahan Akbulut Gizem Kadıoğlu Adem Boz Merve Celasun

Design Director Design Director Urban Planner Architect Architect /3d Visualization Architect / 3d Visualization

The new Government Center of Libreville is located in close proximity to the Boulevard of Triomphal. The site is adjacent to several existing government buildings, being a very monumental location. The project is visually and functionally divided into two zones; the commercial and the ministry zones. This division is crucial for both the functional use and the security zoning purposes of the nature of this project. The commercial zone is placed in close proximity to the Boulevard of Triomphal and consists of one 4-star hotel, a shopping mall and three commercial office buildings. The ministry complex which has limited and secured entrances consists of one Prime Minister, twelve ministry buildings at various heights and service buildings supporting the entire complex. A large ceremonial piazza designed in the central zone of the Ministry complex surrounded and architecturally framed by the Ministry buildings. Two monumental towers define a grand ceremonial piazza at the heart of the project area. This piazza can host National Ceremonies. Prime Minister building has its own security entrances and a separate protocol piazza for more official ceremonies. The ministry building has two main facades one facing the ministry complex while the other facing the protocol piazza. Between the two zones in the site plan, a buffer zone which includes the main entrance and drop off area has been designed. At Government Center, VIP, public and service entrance has been designed separately. The public entrance is located adjacent to commercial areas. The VIP entrance is located at the north side of the project area. Scope & duties: • Site Approach • Design of the Facades • Graphic Design and Presentations.

Süleymaniye Envisioning Urban Rehabilitation Project September 2018 - March 2018 Research_Envisioning_Mass Study Within the scope of “Süleymaniye Development Project”, the contents of this document reflecting a synoptic aspect of productions carried out by Urbanista, consist of three main documents. • • •

Interim Analysis Report Outer Space Concept Memorandum Interior Architectural Design Guide

The contents of all these documents were created with the Urbanista crew with the participation of sub-advisors from different disciplines who are specialists in their fields. With the discussion workshops, field visits, individual or small-group studies carried out, while it is not a “design prescription” for sure, it was aimed to create a series of documents as fundamental guidance, which address the typological problems and determine the approaching principles for them. These documents are a kind of directives for the “truths” which will be attained by enabling the design teams and architects to have enough creative space in the future, to find their physical counterbalances. After the completion of the “interim analysis report” which is the first stage of Urbanista’s scope of service, a new team, which will assume the task of preparing the “city block preliminary projects” for the project, processes. With this progress, some changes regarding the direction/contents of the studies were done with the consensus of all shareholders at this stage achieved in the creation of “Outer Space Concept Memorandum. Instead of the creation of interior space detail elements within the scope of the service, studies for the design of the master plan to be executed in the upper scale was given weight. Within this context, detailed planning operations containing all city blocks located in 6 quarters/lands defined in the project area to direct the team, which will prepare the city block preliminary projects, were carried out. In the relevant studies, storey heights and roof formations were defined, and the urban fabric of the design granules and its effect on the silhouette were evaluated through various perspectives. When we go through yet another stage, “interior architecture design guide”; the main headings within the scope of service were transferred into the document with reference projects and sample type resolutions by discussing them in a broader frame since the main focal point evolved into the master plan study and a detailed unravelling of the overall project with the modelling method.

The workshop will be conducted in coordination of The Circle in collaboration with ITU Faculty of Architecture and Politecnico di Milano. We are also planning to cooperate with other institutes. (universities, municipalities, etc.) As soon as we have their confirmation their names will be added.

MSLab - İstanbul Due to the Metropolization issue, - its spatial extension and temporal acceleration -, specific equipment of techniques for structuring and intervening at big scale, related to a formal definition, is needed. At this scale, the urban disciplines get a new and vast meaning and so start to consider the Landscape such as a possible element of their composition. The Metropolitan discipline, that the MSLab of the Politecnico di Milano and the MIT Metro Lab promote, deals with the specialization of the different methodology related to the form issue at different scales dealing also with the environmental issue. According to Gregotti (Gregotti, 1966), in fact, the environmental question not only concerns the biggest set of problems but rather different problems. If it is so, the territory of the urban disciplines becomes more extended dealing with environmental sets at all scales. The Istanbul project areas are perfect to test our capability to work locally thinking globally, trying to insert into our architectonical and urban design disciplines a critic approach about sustainable history within the environmental issue.

CLAUSTROPHO-BOX in collabration with Adem Box and Merve Celasun

Plastic Monument Competition July 2019 Plastic is not our enemy. What makes plas-tic an enemy is the lack of awareness about plastic waste. Excessive consumption of plas-tic and waste can be defined as the damage given to nature by human beings. We can say that plastic is only a tool in vandalism that is done against nature. Humans play a key role in reducing the environmental hazards of the recycling processes. Therefore, we need to start recycling first with human transforma-tion, to give them awareness about the dam-ages caused by plastic waste. People play two different roles in this process. In the first role, human beings define the user profile, which consumes uncontrolled waste and leaves it to nature, while the second role is trapped in the plastic wastes it has previ-ously taken and consumed and affected by adverse conditions. The installation will simul-taneously experience the user “vandal “ and “victim “ profiles, making it the process of working to exist within the plastic waste cre-ated by it. In this process, with plastic waste that continues to be produce by other users, it will express a living space that is constant-ly growing and shrinking as it grows. It turns into a system that contains less living (human) and ultimately closes to a standstill. The user will be involved in the design of daily plastic waste by compressing the plastic waste generated from the fractures on the surfaces of the product. These plastics will concentrate on the process and reach the inner surface of the product. These wastes will begin to narrow the gap that exists in the middle area and the user in the middle area with this narrowest will begin to squeeze into a plastic mountain. This situation will allow the plastic wastes to be seen, the most consumed and left to nature, and also give the user the opportunity to create awareness by experiencing the consequences of the situation he created. Designed as a box to strengthen the Monument’s impact, the installation provides its location and context through human interaction and plastic waste. This situation allows the monument to be transformed into a deformed mass from where it is located. With plastic and user-welded plastic wastes covering the surface, the installation belongs to the place where the plastic waste is located.

The City in Between A Social Platform Proposal in Between Three Bridges of Istanbul’s Golden Horn Master Thesis in Architecture November 2016- December 2017 Supervisor : Prof. Antonella Contin Co - supervisors : Narges Golkar, Hamza Benacer As the major transportation, business, tourist and cultural hub in Turkey, Istanbul is a metropolitan city formed by water and topography. Even though, the water is the main element that differs Istanbul’s cityscape from the other metropolitan cities, this relation is fainting everyday with the each government’s Neoliberal economical policies. This thesis is concentrates one of the Istanbul’s historical waterfronts. The research is starting from analysing the historical Dna of Istanbul with its distinctive elements and the formation of a public space in a city that is developed and re-developed through history by several layers. Several analysis were made in order to figure out the most appropriate strategy. The methodology is based on connecting the bigger scale and smaller scale voids with both pedestrian and mechanical axes throughout the piercing points. At first the the layers of the city analysed and most appropriate axis were chosen. The project area is well connected from both sides in differ from other neighbourhoods of Istanbul. This methodology allows a continuous connection of the important buildings and public spaces for the creation of pleasant walking paths in order to increase the inner quality by developing inner connectivity. The proposal works with the city on metropolitan, urban and architecture levels. The architectural project focuses on the Eminönü Square, one of the major junction points of Istanbul’s historical peninsula, which is right now transforming into a space where the citizens of the city only visit as “domestic tourists”. The architectural project aims to create an experience in the area with a dynamic movement in between the landmarks of the Eminönü square and the elements of the architectural project.

The continuing investment in Istanbul ‘s infrastructure and mega projects is converting the city into a really populated urban agglomeration and made inhabitants mostly dependent on the cars as a transportation. In addition to this, because of the labyrinth-like structure of the street fabric, accessibility is a problem.Even though Istanbul is a city surrounded by water there is no strong relation with the sea in the waterfront. In most of the waterfront areas are poorly designed especially the public green parks. Another problem of the Istanbul is the loss of the dynamism of the street life. Especially in the last 10 years of Istanbul, the old street life was replaced by the shopping malls. All the activities that street life was supplied to the people became a part of the huge shopping mall complexes. The main idea of the strategy is converting the area in between the Yenikapi and Dolmabahce to a dynamic city centre. Another key point is to turn back Istanbul to its previous characteristics as a city can also be perceived as unique sensory experience from the sounds, colour, smells, textures. The first goal of the strategy is to revitalise the liveliness of the streets and make people adjust the city life. To achieve this goal, several axes were defined within respect to the old structure of the city. The four main axes can also be seen in the old city plans but lost their visibility due to urban agglomeration of Istanbul. Furthermore, these axes will enhance the interpretation of the Byzantine and Ottoman character of the city. The second goal of the strategy is the achieve pedestrian mobility and lighten the problem of transportation that inhabitants of the city face in daily life. Several transportation systems were proposed in between axes.

Istanbul is expanding through three sides, (North, East and West) which resulted in Eminonu in the city centre all the time. Also which can be deprived of the population and land use analysis the area is one of the most populated and growing areas of the city. Eventhough the area is well connected compare to the other areas of Istanbul most important parts of the square is left with unidentified voids expecially on the waterfront. The waterfront area right now using as a bus stop and harbour mostly used by touristic purposes. The aim of the site plan is to create a movement between the streets and important points of the project area. From every axis the flux is coming to openness then change direction to a closure, to have the perception of the old streetscape of Istanbul. By doing this, its is aimed to have an urban imagination with in the site. Several installations and services were also added. To achieve this, the urban grid referring to Süleymaniye Social Complex ( Külliye) is used. The urban grid is changing due to landmarks and orientation of the site. Every line of the site plan is referring to important element located in the project area. After the grid system is located in the site areas referring to different purposes were defined in relation to axes and people fluxes coming from the analysis of the urban strategy. One of the key point of the site plan is to create spaces both on hard and soft landscape where the citizens of the city can be involved in the city and revitalize the relation with the water. Furthermore, the vehicle road coming from Sirkeci and Galata Bridge were taken under until the Gümüşpala Street to create a continuous experience between the landmarks.

The project is referring to the palimpsest character of Istanbul. The idea is to experience the cityscape from different levels. The project consists of three exhibition floors and urban terrace in between. The underground level is starting from the Eminonu Square and going down through the building. Load bearing walls and wall elements were added to create the feeling of Istanbul’s cisterns. The ground floor level for interactive art space for gathering. Accessibility to building is maintained by two entrances one from Eminonu Square and one from Gumuspala Street. In between those entrances an open circulation space is design for continuous flux of the people. In between two exhibition floors there is a urban terrace for panoramic view and communication with the city. The terrace is surrounded by different views of the city. Galata, Suleymaniye Mosque and Eminonu Square with Yeni Camii and Spice Bazaar. This is terrace is also accessible from outer staircase from waterfront and a bridge from the new platform. In this terrace point of view is changing with ceiling becoming higher towards the Yeni Camii give the perception of openness.
