hmic Lake has several claims to fame, one of which is its spectacular walleye fishing. Though they can be elusive, Ahmic Lake’s walleye are large in number and large in weight. While bass and trout are also in Ahmic Lake, the big story is the big walleye. Past rehabilitation and stocking efforts have paid off with a now-thriving walleye population.
There is also a healthy smelt population in Ahmic Lake. The availability of smelt for the walleye means that walleye will often ignore anglers’ offerings, which can be frustrating.
However, one of the ways anglers have worked around this is to fish when the fish are more active, namely at night. Walleye tend to be far more active at night, and while this can be inconvenient for anglers, it can result in higher catch rates.
© The Angler’s Atlas
SheLovesToFish.com Generally, anglers have discovered that the eastern basin is the most productive. That said, Verna Hibbert from Ahmic Lake Resort says that the western end can be great as well. On that side of the lake, she suggests fishing from midJuly through September, rather than the earlier spring and later fall. For those anglers who are more interested in fishing during the daylight hours, bass and pike are the usual targets. Early spring is best for pike. During the summer is when the bass fishery gets going. LAKE ACCESS

alsam Lake is a fabulous summertime destination for anglers. It supports a great fishery for largemouth bass, as well as walleye, muskie and pike. There are several areas worth exploring. Right out from North Bay, try the shallow, weedy areas if you are targetting muskie. Members of iFish Ontario mapped out several hot spots on the lake. The top of the western arm is a popular spot because of the varying depths and underwater structure. As well, try exploring the weedy areas in the south end of West Bay. If it is walleye you are after, try cruising along the southeastern shore of the lake. Members of the Angler’s Atlas have posted several map markers for Balsam Lake. Member kurl8rocks has posted the locations of various boat launches, as well as warnings, which are especially useful for boaters. Check out the page at anglersatlas. com/lake/186123. Walleye are known to be more active in the later evening, and even overnight. Cloudy days, windy and rainy conditions are also ideal for walleye, though not so much for anglers. Bass are more warm weather fish and can be caught in fairly shallow water. Walleye, as well, can hang out in weedy and shallower areas, though more so in the early season. They tend to prefer cooler water than bass.
According to members of iFish Ontario, there is a good bass spot just out from the bridge, off of the weedy area. As well, there is a good deal of underwater structure in Fife’s Bay, along the eastern shore.

olden Lake has some beautiful depth contours that make it ideal for bass and pike. Angler’s Atlas member adleach wrote several posts about Golden Lake on the Angler’s Atlas website:
“I spent a few hours in the afternoon scouting the northwest stretch of the lake, from the Bonnechere River Launch Point to Brudenall Creek. The water temperature sub-surface was 56 degrees Celsius, wind direction was from the southeast, the sky was completely cloud-covered and the air temperature was below 20 degrees.
“I w a s targeting Pike. I was able to find several groups of fish on the sonar, most of which were either on the bottom or suspended over the bottom in 20 to 25 feet of water. “I casted spinner baits in 10 feet of water and jigged a north land forage shiner with only one strike. On my return trip, I dragged a shiner on a bottom bouncer in 20-26 feet of water where I was able to mark several dozen fish near bottom. “People fishing from a weir at the Bonnechere river were able to hook several fish moving into the system, and one person, after five or six hours of fishing, was able

amaniskeg Lake is long and deep with lots of good depth and contour. The lake supports a great fishery for both small and largemouth bass, as well as some decent-sized pike.
Please keep in mind that there are special sanctuary regulations for sections of the river. Make sure you are familiar with the Ontario fishing regulations before heading out.
Reportedly, there are also walleye and lake trout in Kamaniskeg Lake. This diversity appeals to anglers of all skill levels and tastes.
LAKE ACCESS
Lake trout and walleye tend to prefer cooler temperatures, and the deep sections of the lake provide plenty of that. Keep in mind, though, that while they prefer the cooler water, they may not necessarily be actively feeding at those depths. Walleye tend to feed more heavily at night and in cloudy and windy conditions; at those times, surface and shallow depths will be more productive. For some excellent fishing tips for bass and more, check out shelovestofish.com. Ashley Rae will help you catch more fish! The Madawaska River flows through the south end of Kamaniskeg Lake. ountain Lake is clear, cold and deep. It receives less fishing pressure than some of the other nearby lakes. Katherine and Todd Wootton run Ogopogo Resort on Mountain Lake. They offer some greatsuggestions about where to fish.
“This is a great lake trout lake but it also has walleye, small mouth bass and muskie. There is a dam where Twelve Mile Lake feeds into Mountain Lake, which is a great fishing spot. The walleye in the lake are very recent (and we are happy about it), and that is where they seem to be caught. The Woottons suggest that in the
open water, try trolling deep around the steep eastern shoreline. “Small mouth can be caught pretty much anywhere, but the inlet and outlet areas of the lake are often more active spots,” they add. “Ice fishing is amazing on the lake and we are happy to say that it appears “the spot” is about 250 feet in front of our resort. Guests catch lake trout, white fish, herring and even walleye in the early ice fishing season. “Since our huts are in such close proximity to the resort, it makes it nice for guests as they can walk in for lunch, etc. We provide shiner minnows and, honestly, people have the most success with our tip ups, dropping the minnow right down 2 ft. up from the bottom. “I guess word is out in the area as

Rob and Donna Carter run Camp Ashtabula on Pigeon Lake. They say that part of the draw is that you can get to many places from Pigeon Lake for a great variety of fishing opportunities. “Pigeon Lake is part of the Trent Severn Waterway and offers some of the best fishing in the Kawarthas. Casting or trolling, you will find large or smallmouth bass, walleye, panfish, and muskie.
“A boat ride on Pigeon lake can take you to Little and Big Bald Lake, Buckhorn Lake, through Gannon Narrows and from there travel to Chemong Lake without lockage. Its access to these locations and its size make Pigeon Lake a favourite for boating and fishing.” One of the most popular targets is muskie. These large fish require large gear, patience and persistence. Try Giant Pikies, for example. Trolling near weed beds is helpful. Cast over the weeds and along the shore in mid- to late fall. Walleye, also abundant in Pigeon Lake, are early spring fish. While they are often feeding heavily in

Camp Ashtabula Cottages and Seasonal Trailer Park is situated on the beautiful shores of Pigeon L a k e , close to the inlets and bays for protection in rough weather.
For both large and smallmouth bass, warmer water is key. Smallmouth bass prefer sandy and gravel areas, while largemouth bass tend to seek cover. Popular lures for largemouth are plastic worms, topwater lures, shallow-running crankbaits, weedless spoons, as well as buzz- and spinnerbaits. Smallmouth bass tend to go for things like curly-tailed jigs, crankbaits, shallow-diving spinnerbaits, in-line spinners, streamer flies, or crayfish imitations.

Fishing the st Lawrence river A
ll water flowing from the Great Lakes passes through the St. Lawrence River, making it one of the largest river systems in the country. Throughout this river there are more than 20 species of sport fish to target.
The river begins at Kingston, where Lake Ontario begins to narrow around Wolfe Island and starts its journey to the Atlantic Ocean. Fishing around Wolfe Island can be very productive, having strong walleye and bass fisheries. Pike and Muskellunge can also found here, especially among the weed beds. Moving downstream, you will pass the town of Gananoque, an area referred to as the “Thousand Islands”. As the name implies, this is prime fishing habitat with countless shoals and ledges for the fish to call home. Just past Gananoque you reach Ivy Lea Campground — the first park of the St. Lawrence Parks Commission — and a great place to camp when fishing the 1000 Islands.
Further downstream, the river narrows and the current picks up speed approaching Brockville. Between Brockville and Cornwall there are four more campgrounds operated by the St. Lawrence Parks Commission, along with Crysler Park Marina. Of particular note is Hoople Creek Basin, located beside Long Sault Parkway. This is considered to be one of the most productive walleye fisheries in eastern Canada. Past Cornwall, the river flows towards Montreal, where there is one more campground called Glengarry. This campground “boasts” some of the best carp and bass fishing around.
come up to the shallower depths as the water cools. It is not uncommon to catch northern pike over 10 pounds, and bass over five pounds in the St. Lawrence. There are several charter operations that operate on the St. Lawrence. Several are based in Gananoque and Brockville, and will teach you their trade secrets on how to fish these waters. Remember that the St. Lawrence River shares a border with the United States. Use navigation charts if you are planning to get close to it.
T
ypically fishing is strongest between June and September. For those targeting Muskellunge, you may want to extend that season into October and even November, when the Muskie

Glengarry Campground & Beach
Less than an hour west of Montreal, Some 183 campsites are situated among a towering stand of old growth pine. The region is an angler’s paradise, boasting some of the best bass and carp fishing anywhere, in fact, in July of 2010 the largest bass in North America was caught just offshore.
Long Sault Parkway
A series of eleven islands sweep in an arc through the St. Lawrence River like a necklace of green jewels. It is home to three unique campgrounds with over 600 campsites (Mille Roches, Woodlands and McLaren) where you can get away from it all in the heart of the river. It also boasts the largest public beach on the St. Lawrence corridor (Mille Roches), winding bike paths, pristine nature trails, boat launches, picnic parks, diving and remarkable fishing. In fact, Hoople Creek Basin is one of the largest natural Pickerel fish hatcheries and fishing areas in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.
Mille Roches Campground & Beach Spread over two islands, the campgrounds of Mille Roches offer seclusion and tranquility set amidst a forest canopy of mature trees. Of 219 campsites, Mille
Roches has the largest number of waterfront sites among the Parks of the St. Lawrence, with 64 sites along its wooded shores.
a wide arching sandbank with a southern exposure that is perfect for sunbathing.
Woodlands Campground & Beach
Turn your camping experience into a learning adventure at one of North America’s only campgrounds located in the heart of a bird sanctuary. The nature reserve features 69 campsites and five group campgrounds, a Visitor Interpretive Centre with displays and themed merchandise, 8 kilometres of selfguided hiking trails and, of course, abundant wildlife with over 150 different bird species. The Sanctuary’s Morrison Island offers some of the best carp fishing in the world with anglers coming in on chartered excursions from around the globe.
Thirty 50 Amp RV sites were recently added along the campground’s eastern shoreline along with two beach front cabins. Woodlands Beach and Picnic area, located on the river side of the island, is the ideal location for large scale community events, so why not consider this serene park and beach setting for your next church group, sports team or club get together. There is room for groups from twenty to two thousand.
McLaren Campground
McLaren Campground recently underwent a major renaissance with 113 of its 206 campsites being upgraded to full RV capability with 32 new 50 amp sites and five cabins named in honour of the Lost Villages. We have also introduced several new pull-through sites for quick set-ups and easy get-aways.

ice Lake is fairly shallow, with abundant areas of weeds and sand flats. This makes for some rich fish habitat. Rice Lake is best known for its bass, walleye and muskie.
Bass Pro Shops’ The Fishin’ Guide, says that anglers should try the areas around Bewdley for spring walleye. “Cast a silver rattle spot, retrieving at medium speed in 5-8 feet of water. Try to cover a lot of water, the area is quite large.” In summer, things change somewhat. The walleye will head deeper through the channels at the south end of the lake. Try the area around Gores Landing, trolling slowly with a chartreuse worm harness in about 20 feet of water.

ake Scugog is a popular fishing lake near Peterborough. Ice fishing is especially busy here.
Bass Pro Shops’ The Fishin’ Guide, suggests that when targetting black crappie, try using pinhead minnows and small tube jigs in white, yellow and chartreuse. Usually, dusk and dawn are the best times. Currently, the Ministry of Natural Resources is considering a closure on walleye in Lake Scugog due to a major decline in fish stocks in recent years. The fisheries for other species would remain open. Perch are commonly caught during
the winter, and although many of them are quite small, there are some larger fish to be found. During the warmer months, many of the same ice fishing techniques also work on open water.
For black crappie, try jigging minnows near the bottom with small spoons. Crappie are generally active at night. As they target walleye fry, they c a n often be found near walleye.
Members of the Angler’s Atlas have posted numerous map markers around Lake Scugog, as well as fishing reports. Causeway Live Bait in Port Perry has some excellent fishing information for the lake. Check out anglersatlas. com/lake/102451. LAKE ACCESS

HAVE YOU SEEN AN AMERICAN EEL?
Z
The Ministry of Natural Resources would like to know if you see or catch an American eel. This is an endangered species protected under Ontario’s Endangered Species Act. In recent decades, the American eel has declined in numbers due to a variety of factors, including over-fishing, migration barriers, hydro facilities, habitat loss, parasites, and pollution. The occurrence of eels has not been well documented and you can help determine where they are currently. Please contact the Natural Resources Information Centre at 1-800-667-1940 to report this information.
