mammography and CTs; ultrasound uses sound, and MRI uses magnetic field and the intrinsic tissue compositions of the body.” Dr. Leipsic adds, “They have different mechanisms of action or image development and yield images that have distinctive strengths. Ultrasound is quite good at looking at superficial parts, especially abdominal, gynaecological issues, testicular issues, and thyroid, for example. As a part of their community focus, Robin’s Pharmacy works closely with Kettle Friendship Society serving patients who require mental health support. Kettle, a nonprofit organization, has been a pillar for those in need of mental health services throughout Vancouver for decades providing housing, employment, and support services for vulnerable citizens. Robin’s Pharmacy works with Kettle, providing prescription medication delivery and administration to many of those who utilize the Kettle’s services.
Having worked for many years as a relief pharmacist after graduating from UBC in 1996, Manweiler had enough experience in different pharmacy environments to formulate a best practices model for Robin’s Pharmacy, which he opened in 2009. Relying heavily on his staff to carry out the engagement with patients and customers, he counts his team as the most valuable asset he has to ensure people are being cared for.
Robin’s Pharmacy is currently in the process of expanding its location to include the business unit next door. In addition to physically growing, Robin’s Pharmacy has moved into technology, launching an app in conjunction with their drug wholesaler Unipharm, which will allow patients to refill prescriptions and make other requests directly from their smartphones. The app, which customers can download on their iPhone, Android, or tablet under the name “Medicine Centre,” sends a request to the pharmacy’s fax, which staff will then add to their workload. The goal is to improve the patient’s quality of care and make the staff ’s workload more efficient.
“It’s about developing strong relationships with customers, making sure they know we’re interested in their general wellbeing,” Manweiler says. “We spend the time to get to know them, so we have a greater picture of who they are, rather than just being a number or a prescription. If we have enough information outside of the medicine they take—such as who they are and what their habits are—our general understanding of what they need is more clear.”

We do what we can to continually make a difference for those we serve. We want to know people’s opinions on how we can more effectively serve them and expand our scope to fulfill their needs more completely. We don’t know what those needs are until they tell us. John Volken Academy It’s all about Changing Lives! John Volken believes in the phrase “learn, earn, and return.” His time to return arrived in 1995 when he was awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Shortly after, John sold his furniture business and put all the proceeds into a foundation to help those who cannot help themselves – those who are wanting to better their lives but don’t have the means to do so. He then travelled all of North America and Europe to investigate the successes of therapeutic communities. He formed a Board of Directors to oversee three facilities in Arizona, Washington, and BC and it was decided to name the program the John Volken Academy.
The John Volken Academy’s long-term program provides the opportunity for participants to adopt a health new lifestyle, develop strong character, receive extensive career training, and advance their education.
Therapeutic Communities (TC) are group based, highly structured treatment centres that go much further than simply helping individuals to stop using drugs and alcohol. They provide a supportive environment where individuals learn why they used and develop all the tools necessary to stay sober.
For his success in changing lives, in 2015, John Volken was awarded the Dalai Lama Humanitarian Award. “The steadfast goal here is that students acquire freedom from addiction,” says Volken. The program provides the tools for young men and women in recovery to live life with purpose and become the best that they can be. “Sometimes it’s emotionally draining when someone doesn’t succeed,” admits Volken. “But when graduation comes, parents are amazed, proud, and we see students’ tears of gratitude and success. The motto of Therapeutic Communities is “each one, teach one”. This implies that individuals assume responsibility not only for their own recovery, but also for the recovery of their peers. They recognize that the recovery of each member is related to the recovery of all and conduct themselves accordingly – this, in turn, reinforces their own recovery. Personal growth and proper living are achieved by peers serving as role models, providing support through interaction, and confronting each other in group sessions. By doing all of this, participants come to understand and resolve the cause of their addiction and also gain the tools they need to stay sober.

mastermind studios Mastermind Studios is a full-service video production company, known for capturing authentic video that engages the audience. Based in Kamloops, Mastermind Studios provides video production work for clients in the heavy industry and resource sectors across British Columbia and Alberta. In 2010, Mastermind Studios became one of the first production companies in western Canada to work in aerial drone video production. Mastermind Studios is licensed by Transport Canada, and is fully insured and trained to operate multi-rotor, remote, unmanned aerial vehicles.
