eeply rooted in the most advanced medical technology available today, False Creek Healthcare is a state-of-the-art, multi-disciplinary facility structured with an unwavering commitment to patient-centered care. They provide high-quality service to individuals and families seeking to improve and achieve their optimal health and well-being. At its core, False Creek Healthcare works to detect and prevent disease early, when it’s more easily managed and treated. Within a world-class 25,000-squarefoot facility, patients are greeted with an environment with a sense of serenity where they are welcomed with genuine warmth, both from the space aesthetics and the highly-skilled surgeons, physicians and medical support team. A team of over 100 physicians and surgeons with privileges provides a progressive and broad-based proficiency in a wide-range of services and treatments with minimal wait times. Established in 1996, False Creek Healthcare Centre is not your average health care provider; in fact, what sets them apart is their integrated approach to care. Multiple professional services exist under one roof, where all departments work together with a common goal — serving the needs of patients. The facility offers surgeons, specialists and diagnostic imaging services dedicated to expedited patient care. Additionally an Urgent Care Centre, Women’s Wellness Program, Executive Health Program, and Family Practice

program coexist under a cohesive umbrella. Cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures are available too with one of the largest teams of plastic surgeons in BC. “When patients come to our Family Practice or Executive Health Programs and require a referral to a specialist or need surgery or diagnostics, we can provide that very quickly in-house,” says Lauren Fineman, medical director, Family Practice & Executive Health. False Creek’s Urgent Care provides direct access to on-site emergency room physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of acute injuries, conditions, and illnesses. Using advanced diagnostic imaging and bedside laboratory testing, they’re able to provide rapid diagnosis and subsequent treatment options. A comprehensive and effective Executive Health Program is designed and tailored to meet the needs of busy professionals. The program is used by many high-profile organizations, including Canucks Sports & Entertainment, an official partner. The detailed assessment includes testing and screening, a complete blood profile, cardiovascular, respiratory, and physical exams and ultrasounds if required. At the conclusion, patients receive the results coupled with a health risk appraisal and general recommendations. With a devotion to relationship building, you won’t feel like a number when you require medical attention from the Family Practice Program, because of an exceptional doctor to patient ratio, limiting the practice to just 500 families for each doctor. Family medicine is best offered with personal attention, allowing unhurried communication between you and your doctor. “It’s important we listen to all of our patient’s concerns so we can give a more complete picture of their health rather than doing one thing at a time,” says Dr. Fineman. “Providing a good experience includes an appointment that isn’t rushed.”

Valley Laser Eye Centre Laser eye surgery has been practiced in Canada for decades, but Valley Laser Eye Centre (VLEC) is the first in Canada with the most innovative technologies and progressive methods, and it’s where consumers should focus their visioncorrection needs.

V

LEC is ranked as one of the top laser centres in North America and offers the broadest range of the most scientifically advanced eye surgery options in B.C. With a safety-focused work environment, the professional and highly skilled staff is committed to the finest details, while ensuring the utmost in quality and integrity to exceed all their customer’s expectations. “My staff and I are dedicated to bringing the latest innovations, along with our very best care to our patients,” says Dr. Blaylock. Dr. Blaylock performs the vast majority of procedures at VLEC and has been practicing in the Abbotsford area since 1989. With over 100,000 surgeries to his personal credit, Dr. Blaylock is a recognized leader and pioneer in eye surgery. Chances are you know someone who has had some form of laser eye surgery or are considering a procedure yourself. The allure of ditching daily eyewear or to be free from the burden of traditional contact lenses is an exciting prospect. VLEC can correct nearsighted prescriptions as large as -24 and -26 with implantable contact lenses; this state-of-the-art technology

outperforms any refractive procedure available today. Implantable contact lenses (ICL), also known medically as Phakic intraocular lenses (IOL), are contact lenses that are surgically inserted into the eye and provide excellent quality of vision with predictable and stable results. “If you are in your 20s, 30s or 40s and have extreme myopia, thin or relatively unhealthy corneas, implantable contact lenses may be your best alternative,” explains Dr. Blaylock, “as LASIK or PRK eye surgery may not be safe for your eyes.” Many factors determine the best individualized procedure and Dr. Blaylock and his team perform a thorough complimentary preoperative exam to ensure you’re a good candidate for ICL or any other treatment. “We see every person in advance, individually, before surgery, not just the day of surgery,” assures Dr. Blaylock. “We want to determine the best possible option for every patient.” If you don’t qualify for one procedure, VLEC offers an array of alternative surgical procedures such as Custom PRK (often the first line of treatment). This is the most advanced version of the original PRK laser eye surgery. Custom PRK is the preferred treatment for people with thin corneal tissue who are looking for the very best visual outcomes possible. VLEC specializes in LenSx, an all laser cataract surgery for patients who’ve undergone LASIK, PRK or Radial Keratotomy. “Our practice is not built around the notion that we can only do this or that,” says Dr. Blaylock. “We tailor treatments to safety, effectiveness, lifestyle, and budget.” You can confidently trust Dr. Blaylock and the VLEC team to deliver quality procedures and customize treatments to the unique dynamics of your eyes for the very best vision correction possible.

ancouver’s Symmetrix is an exercise rehabilitation and personal training company with a firm foothold in the industry, implementing a proven strategy to help all of their clients reach their individual goals. The key to their longevity has been a solid reputation built on lasting relationships of respect and support with dedicated clients (some as long as 24 years), coupled with the highest expertise in the field: everyone in their team is a practicing kinesiologist and member of the B.C. Association of Kinesiologists. “We are very proud to be one of the only exercise rehabilitation and personal training companies in the Lower Mainland that has a full team of practicing kinesiologists,” says Sheron Stone, principal & practicing kinesiologist. From start-up to high-growth company, Symmetrix was the brainchild of husband Terry Stone, founder & principal and practicing kinesiologist, who established the enterprise at grass-roots level in Burnaby in 1992 with an initial focus on personal training. To compliment the business model, services were expanded in the late ‘90s to include exercise rehabilitation, predominately catering to ICBC referred clients. Sheron joined full-time in 1999 and five years later the Symmetrix Studio opened in Yaletown. The company’s tagline “Bounce Back. Press Forward”

embodies their purpose; to provide exceptional exercise programs to both injured and non-injured clients, whatever their personal fitness goals are. Symmetrix’s unique training provides safe, measurable, motivating and challenging exercise programs aimed at maximizing the client’s quality of life. “When we opened our studio our goal was to create a balance and niche with a really great personal training service for everybody who wanted to work with highlevel professionals,” reveals Sheron. Through the years Symmetrix has developed solid relationships with health practitioners, an ever-expanding network of referral partners throughout the Lower Mainland. “We work very closely with an informal but tight referral network with people we trust, and we’re really proud of that.” With a far-reaching client base, whether a professional athlete or retired grandpa, CEO or stay-at-home mom — whatever your circumstance requires, a Symmetrix kinesiologist will assess and work one-on-one to educate, inspire, coach and respond to your needs. “Our rehab programs use exercise to help people who are injured or experiencing chronic pain, return to daily activities,” explains Sheron. “Our knowledge of exercise physiology helps us get specific results such as improving function, restoring mobility and decreasing pain.” The science of human movement is the backbone to Symmetrix’s niche in the market. “It’s all about the education around what our clients can do for their own strengthening, conditioning, and exercises to help with their fitness and health,” says Sheron. Within a warm and comforting environment, Symmetrix’s family feel is extended through their dedicated professional team, whereby new and long-term clients can expect a wonderful and caring, positive fitness experience.

Float House Just float. That’s the message from Andy and Mike Zaremba, brothers who saw the benefits of float tanks also known as sensory deprivation tanks.

T

hat’s why they created Float House and are witnessing the positive benefits clients are having. The popularity of floating has caused the expansion of Float House to nine tanks in Gastown (the largest float operation in the world) as well as a Kitsilano location and a Victoria franchise. It’s an interesting concept: crawl into a tank filled with 10” of water and 900 pounds of Epsom salts heated to about 93.5° F (the same temperature as your skin), close the lid and float on the salt water in complete darkness and soundlessness for 90 minutes. “In our society we are regularly overstimulated,” says Mike. “There are stressors constantly bombarding us. In the tank, you eliminate all physical sensory input and can reset.” The brothers explained that the tank is ideal for those under stress or mental strain, those in need of physical recovery after extensive exercise or injury, people dealing with chronic pain from arthritis or surgery and those who are looking for a deep meditative or creative boost.

tank allows you to enter into theta and maintain that state longer even for nonmeditators. “90 minutes is to achieve a circadian rhythm cycle,” says Mike. “Sometimes it can take up to 45 minutes to get into Theta. Then, because you’ve experienced a natural cycle, you wake up feeling well rested, energized and not groggy. Very peaceful and light.” At 90 minutes, underwater speakers play a soothing soundtrack that increases in volume to help you wake-up more naturally. “We provide everything people need to do their float,” commented Andy. “From private rooms with body wash and towels to vanity areas with products and blow-dryers. We also have a lounge to relax in after your float.” The concept of sensory deprivation has been part of human kind for millennia be it in caves or temples. The brothers describe their business as a more contemporary and refined version of that experience. “It’s an oasis in a very busy, energetic city,” says Mike. “I believe it brings balance without pharmaceuticals. It’s a way to hit that reset button for your entire being.” Coming out of a float leaves people in a calmer, relaxed, yet more aware state. “Your senses are heightened,” Mike noted. “You become more aware of the world around you, yet better able to manage what comes at you.”

“You aren’t distracted in the tank, your body has no pressure points,” Andy noted. “So you’re in complete awareness of your mind and thoughts. It can lead to more time in the Theta brainwave state.”

“I feel like we opened a flood gate,” Andy added. “We spent a lot of time educating people on Facebook and everyone was really intrigued. Now we’re amazed by the number of people who are aware of floating.”

Theta state occurs just before falling asleep and is also achieved and prolonged in states of deep meditation by experienced meditators. Being in the

hese marginal, temporary solutions and people’s desire to remove this nuisance follicle (whether facial or elsewhere) is something members of the Canadian Organization of Professional Electrologists (COPE) take very seriously. “We want to stand up and be recognized in this industry for who we truly are,” says Evelyn Geatros, owner, Fairview Electrolysis Clinic. “Passionate, certified, professional leaders in quality permanent hair removal.” Established in 1989, non-profit COPE National functions as a referral centre to assist consumers who require help finding a qualified professional electrologist. The organization also provides direction to those individuals who are seeking training options to become a competent professional electrologist. Members of COPE National are among those elite practitioners who meet and adhere to superior standards of practice. In order to remain in good standing, all active COPE National members must have Health Canada Infection Control Standards and Guidelines or their provincial standards in effect. “Just because someone has a certificate on their wall doesn’t mean they’re legit or in good standing,” says Geatros. “Consumers need to do their homework, research, and ask questions when looking to find an electrologist.” A good electrologist should be forthcoming about how their treatment

works and what equipment they use — the more transparent about their business, the better. Make certain the electrologist’s training and experience is in place; it will ensure you receive the best results, and more importantly, keep you safe. During the safe procedure the skin is not punctured; rather, an electrical current is emitted into the hair follicle through a filament, which destroys the hair growth cells. To their credit, Health Canada invited COPE to sit on their committee to create and establish the health standards for all Canadian electrologists. According to Geatros, consumers need to learn what the practices and principles of electrolysis are before undergoing any treatment; plus, it’s imperative to book a consultation and arm yourself with the necessary information so you can make an informed decision: is the technician and the treatment right for you? All COPE members are well-trained practitioners specializing in confidentiality and an empathetic ear: “we want to be able to help people build self esteem and confidence,” says Geatros. So, how many treatments until the desired results are achieved? No one figure, as it turns out. The number of treatments varies from person to person. However, at the end of the complete treatment program, your results will reflect a permanent solution to hair growth. You’ll be free from the incessant cycle of tweezing, plucking, and waxing — or any other hair removal procedure. COPE National disseminates valuable information on the proficiency of electrolysis across Canada. Throughout B.C. there is a COPE National member available to provide their expertise, including, but not limited to: Karen Le Francois, Skin Sense Day Spa, Prince George; Chantal Peacock, Calida Electrolysis, Prince George; Kim Gerry, Timeless Electrolysis, Chilliwack; and Lisa Perizzolo, Take It Off, Burnaby, B.C.

Lark Group: Develop Build Manage Outstanding communities have a few common denominators: proximity to transportation and infrastructure, exceptional builder/ developer reputation, a healthy appreciation, and more than ever, a commitment to sustainable development.

S

urrey’s Innovation Boulevard is the artery where a fusion of innovation and technology integrates with health care, a network hub connecting businesses with health institutions and universities over one square mile.

Constructed with infinite imagination, vision, modelling and a greater awareness of what is possible, City Centre One (CC 1) was developed by Lark Group in partnership with Dayhu Group of Companies. Executing quality project delivery and leading-industry design-build, the $75-million, 12-storey office building (targeting LEED® Gold design) is positioned to provide optimal environments and productivity. “CC 1 is the first retail and office building to be built and occupied in Innovation Boulevard,” says Kirk Fisher, the group’s senior vice-president. “We are currently at 87% sold/leased, and proud to say we were the Judges’ Choice Best Overall Entry in the 4th annual Fraser Valley Commercial Building Awards. CC 1 also won the Excellence Award in the Office Category.” Innovation Boulevard is focusing on three technology areas: medical devices, independent living and digital health. The shared vision is to achieve remarkable results in four areas: improve health outcomes; implement

intelligent solutions for the health-care system; attract talented clinicians and researchers; and grow companies in health-care technology and services sectors. “CC 1 is 180,000-square-feet of office space and ground floor retail,” reveals Kirk. “It’s a mixed-use facility with over 600 parking stalls in a multifloor parkade. CC 1 is directly across the street from the expanded Surrey Memorial Hospital and two blocks from the Surrey Central SkyTrain Station.” “It is truly the vision of the city to have Innovation Boulevard and Lark supporting it in every way possible,” says Larry Fisher, Lark Group president. “We have 30,000-square-feet dedicated to Innovative companies in CC 1 and planning much more in CC 2 and CC 3. To have Dr. Ryan D’Arcy with his remarkable success in brain research heading the team and Surrey’s former Mayor Dianne Watts working with the non-profit is outstanding. Without question, this is an incubator for new entrepreneurs to take their research and inventions to a new level to become successful businesses to create employment in Surrey, but even more important, to enhance the tools to improve the health of Canadians and the rest of the world.” For 16 years Lark has been a leader in health-care development and construction in the Fraser Valley having completed 17 Public Private Partnership (P3) projects. Lark develops award-winning institutional projects by synthesizing the best of evidence-based design and patient-centred care, while delivering the services and features that clinicians need. “We’re excited about being part of Surrey; we’ve been here a long time and seen the growth,” admits Larry. “To partake at this level is very rewarding for Lark. We look forward to creating new opportunities and making exciting buildings that will contribute to the future growth of the city.”

Baptist Housing For fifty years, with a faith-based history and value-driven culture of care, Baptist Housing has established itself as a major contributor to B.C.’s health-care system, providing valued and holistic living through a myriad of quality seniors’ housing options, independent and assisted living, residential care, and affordable rental while continually achieving exceptional senior care.

R

eaching a half-century milestone speaks to the organization’s model of excellence, upholding a steadfast responsibility to maintain the founding vision of quality and compassion, while facilitating seniors’ life’s necessities: ensuring personal wellness and quality of life and providing homes in engaged communities for those in need. “It’s a privilege for families and seniors to entrust their care to us,” says Marc Kinna, chief operating officer. “We take the confidence of those we serve very seriously.” Actively building on their Christian principles of humility and grace, an inspired team of over 900 dedicated members is devoted to making a difference in the lives of over 2,000 residents in their communities. “We believe our team makes a huge difference in that we really try and operate like a family, collaborating together, while delivering services to our residents,” reveals Kinna. “It’s with a familiar face that you build a relationship; we create a relationship-based home-like environment for seniors.”

Moreover, in the face of fiscal restraint and continued demand for services, registered non-profit Baptist Housing leverages its strong foundation of relationships with resources invested into improving the lives and well-being of their residents, including but not limited to, partnerships with regional health authorities, and BC Housing. The Heights at Mt. View, a new 260-suite residential care community in Saanich, is an example of such a collaborative partnership between Baptist Housing, Island Health and the Capital Regional Hospital District. While some senior housing rental residences are at the low end of the market, others are subsidized for low-income seniors through their partnership with BC Housing. Without sacrificing quality or comfort, spiritual care support and a host of amenities including inclusive health and wellness programs drive the benefits of living in the community while maintaining independence of your own suite. Baptist Housing prioritizes fitness and recreation programs, and nutritious menu options to sustain optimal well-being. “Maple Towers in Maple Ridge is a subsidized senior housing community and Vancouver’s Grandview Towers includes both affordable rental senior housing apartments and 55 suites with supportive housing services, part of the Seniors Supportive Housing Program offered through BC Housing,” says Kinna. An optimal middle ground for seniors who value their independence and welcome the support services and all-inclusive lifestyle of a retirement home are ideal candidates for independent living. Residents of premier Shannon Oaks in Vancouver and Victoria’s Oak Bay continue to live well and be active in a supportive community that provides freedom, security and peace of mind. Kinna shares an anecdote about one Shannon Oaks resident who said moving in saved his life. “We provided a supportive community, he became more active, ate healthier, felt better, and essentially we’ve helped him live a longer, more enriched life.”

We believe our team makes a huge difference in that we really try and operate like a family, collaborating together. – COO, Baptist Housing Marc Kinna

Viva Care In the face of everincreasing challenges to the delivery of health care, Viva Care’s unique approach to caring for B.C.’s patient population is what puts them on the map, literally.

C

hampioned by the same organization, patients receive an equal level of quality care and service in each of their eight clinic locations throughout the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland. “As an organization, we could have easily taken our 35-plus practitioners (including specialists, family doctors, and allied health professionals) and housed them in one professional building,” says Gary Prihar, co-founder. “However, that would defeat our objective of access to care; rather than pick one location that’s convenient to us, we wanted multiple locations all over the Lower Mainland to provide maximum access to our health-care practitioners.” Convenience is one aspect lauded for their model of care; however, it’s not to be understated. Their integrated EMR (electronic medical records) system sets the bar for all other facilities. “If someone visits any one of our clinics and wasn’t registered, we’d create their patient record,” explains Prihar. “Potentially, they could arrive at any of our other seven locations and that patient record would follow them.” This circle of care for the patient provides the opportunity for Viva Care practitioners to share medical records securely and instantly anywhere, reducing travel time and positioning patients to the same level of services without ties to particular clinics, regardless of the physician’s specialty.

“Although a patient may see a different physician, that doctor is comparing and sharing the notes in a collaborative approach with the first physician,” says Prihar. “Our quality of care model isn’t fragmented; whether someone sees a physiotherapist or other specialist, that physiotherapist writes a detailed report for the doctor, in other words, those reports travel with the individual so a higher quality of care is delivered, regardless if they’re an unattached walkin patient.” Expediency is a natural result of this care model (you can book appointments online too). With specialists and allied health professionals working at concurrent locations, they’re rubbing shoulders with your family physician or walk-in doctor; once you leave a clinic your files are transmitted to the doctor immediately — therefore, you’re not subjected to lengthy waits. The integrated nature of Viva Care takes expediency to another level. With a cross-section of walk-in doctors, family doctors, and specialists, if you’re a patient in their system you are eligible for referral to any of their in-house specialists, rather than endure an extensive waiting list. Proximity takes on a whole new meaning when tele-medicine is part of the equation. The virtual health-care concept brings patients and doctors together online and gives new credence to “the doctor will see you now.” “We’re one of only two companies that offer this service in the province,” reveals Prihar. “If it’s more convenient to receive your lab results over web conferencing, we provide that service; we’re not trying to recruit patients from far away, we’re simply adding value and extra convenient service to our existing patients.”

If it’s more convenient to receive your lab results over web conferencing, we provide that service. – Co-founder, Viva Care Gary Prihar

John Volken Academy By the time people have reached their golden years, most have already transitioned into retirement, enjoying the fruits of their life’s work and acquiesced to a life of leisure.

A

t 72, John Volken, founder of the John Volken Academy — is not most people. He continues to oversee all aspects of his long-term residential drug and alcohol treatment centre, which he conceived 10 years ago. Volken parlayed his hard-earned millions from his United Furniture Warehouse fortune into his philanthropic endeavours. “Making money was fun, but this is rewarding,” he says. “Helping others has brought me tremendous joy and satisfaction. I believe that once we have provided for our families, we should then work for the good of all.” He was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year in 1995, and most recently, honoured with the Dalai Lama Humanitarian Award. “There are so many others who give their life’s work to help others, so I feel a bit humbled about the whole thing,” confesses Volken. “But of course, the reflection this has on the academy is great.” Modeled after the therapeutic community methodology to addiction treatment, the academy provides young men and women, mostly in their mid-twenties, with healthy lifestyle changes necessary to forever live successful and sober lives, instilling a daily reinforcement that recovery is possible. An abstinencebased approach with strict guidelines works on a foundation of discipline and

accountability with a minimum two-year commitment. “Short-term programs can only handle the symptom of the addiction not the cause,” explains Volken. “We get to the cause, resolve the issues, and teach the tools needed to stay sober.” The newly built John Volken Academy is a 72-unit facility in Surrey’s Newton community, housing all the modern conveniences to help students achieve a healthy level of living: first-rate gymnasium, dining facility, residences, library, amenity building and on-site dentist. There is a $5,000 intake fee. The program is free including: treatment, food, clothing and education. The steadfast goal here is that students acquire freedom from addiction, to become self-sufficient and contribute back to society through hard work and dedication. “Any individual predisposed to addiction, needs long-term treatment,” says Volken. “Addiction becomes a chronic disease.” The program provides the tools with a hands-on approach for recovering addicts to live life with purpose. So hands-on is Volken, in fact, he lives at the academy, often sits with students during mealtimes, and is part of the encounter groups. “We are teaching empowerment, self esteem, self control and self confidence — long-term life skills so they learn to be the best that they can be,” says Volken. “Students develop interpersonal skills, management and leadership skills and humility; they learn to be reliable, disciplined and responsible. Some stay here and work at Price Pro, others, stay at our transition house and look for jobs.” “Sometimes it’s emotionally draining when someone doesn’t succeed,” admits Volken. “But when graduation comes, parents are amazed, proud, and we see students’ tears of gratitude and success. That’s all worth it; life doesn’t get any better than that!”

Kamloops’ Dr. Preety Desai is a certified specialist in periodontics with a Masters in laser dentistry. With over 5,000 implants placed and 19 years of specialty experience, it’s no surprise she was the first periodontist in Canada to introduce the erbium laser into everyday specialty practice. Not to mention, she’s the only periodontist in North America acquiring a Masters of Science degree in laser dentistry. Discovering her aptitude for the field was mostly an organic process. She always excelled in science but also harboured a love for graphic and visual arts, which had her torn between career goals. “I discovered that dentistry provided a perfect balance of art and science and therefore satisfied both of my personal interests,” reveals Dr. Desai. “Periodontics is a true balance of art and science in dentistry,” she says. “The detail, finesse and precision to which our surgical procedures are executed make us the plastic surgeons of the mouth.” Laser technology has completely changed the methods of delivery of all facets of dentistry and the periodontal

specialty is no different. Benefits of using lasers in periodontics results in improved esthetics, faster healing and longevity of surgical results in: gingival grafting, flap surgery, osseous surgery, crown lengthening, extractions, bone grafting, sinus lifts, placement of implants and treatment of periimplantitis. According to Dr. Desai and her colleagues, the biggest challenge is trying to educate the public, but also the dentists, to recognize, diagnose and refer a patient in need sooner rather than later when things are not painful. “We periodontists have the skill, graduate education and experience to help people save and maintain their teeth rather than dealing with things too late when the teeth cannot be salvaged and thus extraction and implants are the only options,” explains Dr. Desai. Dr. Desai outlines the advantages of dental laser technology, the cornerstone of progressive medical procedures that have been adapted and indispensible in dentistry. “The transference of laser technology required dentistry to design a different machine, a true dental laser. This technology elevates periodontics and our surgical skills to the next level. Laser surgery is less invasive, less painful, less need for traditional cutting and stitching, less bleeding, and of course, it produces better results in executing the same procedures we traditionally practice.” Dr. Desai and her experienced staff have the respect of the community (nominated for the Best Green Business) and are committed to working together with you and your dentist and hygienist to provide excellence in the latest techniques and exceed your expectations. “We believe in educating our patient’s so they’re able to make the best, informed decision about their treatment.”

Active Choices “I like being a coach because it keeps me mindful of my own exercise goals. It would be difficult to call a participant to ask about their exercise goals if I am just sitting on the couch.”

C

oach Betty is a mentor and a volunteer with Active Choices and she is helping change people’s lives one participant at a time. Her comment taps into the core of the program: keep people physically active and help people develop an exercise habit, ultimately holding participants accountable — and so it seems, her too. Active Choices is a licensed program developed and researched at Stanford University. It follows a standardized format that is proven to help people to achieve their exercise goals. It is considered a best practice program in self-management. As a six-month personal telephone support program, Active Choices is part of the overall Self-Management Program delivered through the University of Victoria. The coach works with individuals one-on-one through regular telephone contact to develop an exercise routine customized to their needs, abilities and goals. “Research shows that if a person remains consistently physically active for a period of six months, then they will have developed a habit, and habits are hard to break,” says Angela Sealy, coordinator. “Active Choices is an individualized tailored program and is free to B.C. residents over 19, as are all of our Self-Management Programs, because they are funded by the B.C. Ministry of Health.”

The program is open to adults who want to be more active and are medically safe and physically able to engage in aerobic or cardiovascular exercise without supervision. Participants are paired with a telephone coach who has taken special training, and meets with you first, face-to-face and then offers support via personal phone calls to track goals and progress. Sealy’s job is to train coaches and match them to participants, who currently include 400 coaches and 350 participants. “I do an intake for each participant, ask health questions, find out what works and what doesn’t and then match them within their same city,” explains Sealy. “When they meet, they build rapport, and through a facilitative process and collaborative approach, the coach designs a personal activity plan, then moving forward, they connect over the phone.” The coach provides encouragement and also links people with resources in their community. Coaches teach self-management skills, such as goal setting and problem-solving to help shape exercise habits. “When I saw the advertisement for Active Choices, I was curious as to what active choices meant,” says Elizabeth, a recently retired participant. “I soon found out, thanks to my coach, that it actually meant active living. Through her help and support I was able to make better choices in my daily life that complements what I am able to do to incorporate activities into my schedule.” The health benefits of regular physical activity are hard to ignore. Regular physical activity is for every — body, a great way to feel better and have fun; after all, “Living Active is Living Well.”

Kinsmen Lodge If you are an elder living in a care home, one of the most important aspects of leading an enriched quality life is the opportunity to make independent choices about how you want to live.

K

insmen Lodge, a 157-bed, fourstorey care home in Surrey, has created an environment where people feel productive and valued, and who continue to have a sense of purpose and contribution. The Kinsmen Care Team makes this possible through their recreation and volunteer programs, facilitated through the Eden Alternative Philosophy of Care™. This philosophy, in part, is designed to reduce the plagues of loneliness, helplessness and boredom. The program intention is structured to promote wellness, encourage independence and choice, meaningful activities, social engagement, stimulation, purpose, and of course, fun. “The Eden Alternative Philosophy of Care™ helps staff, elders and volunteers focus on what is meaningful and important to elders,” says Leisa Bannerman, director of Recreation and Volunteer Services, “to create a home that includes possibilities for real friendships and foster strengths and talents yet to be discovered.”

On the surface, recreation may seem like a nice added value, but it’s essential to the quality of life elders enjoy at Kinsmen Lodge. According to extensive research, there’s a direct correlation between social engagement and purpose to the overall wellness of elders.

“Recreation is a vital part of our philosophy of care,” says Kathleen Strath, CEO. “The activities and programs stimulate the elders and keep them engaged, often providing an avenue to try something new. The volunteers are a wonderful asset to Kinsmen Lodge; they visit with elders, help them attend activities and create an atmosphere of fun and home.” Gardening, music, art, exercise, weekly happy hour, special events, day trips, and the Java Music Club are some of the key program activities available to our elders. Elder Patrick Muir says art therapy gives him a chance to express his creativity. “I look forward to it each week and am pleasantly surprised by the quality of work by my fellow elders,” he says. “We have fun and socialize while attempting new projects.” “The Java Music Club is a significant addition to our core recreation programs,” says music therapist, Maddie Bourdages. “People come each week to spend time with friends over a cup of coffee, chat about life, share stories and enjoy the music. One of our ladies often brings and plays her own maraca.”

The Java Music Club reaches out to those elders who may be isolated, lonely, and sometimes depressed. Don’t be surprised to catch elders enjoying Frank Sinatra’s silky voice or the unforgettable Nat King Cole. “Many of our recreation programs would not be possible without the 200-plus volunteers that help make Kinsmen Lodge a warm and loving home,” reveals Bannerman. “Their contributions enhance the quality of life for our elders, and in return, Kinsmen provides volunteers with opportunities to grow, gain confidence and expand their skill set. Our youngest volunteer is five and our most senior volunteer is 83.”

Integrated Health Clinic Cancer Care Centre People living with cancer have treatment options that can be safely and effectively added to conventional Western medicine.

ntegrative oncology focuses on the whole person, body, mind and spirit, with expertise on evidence-guided naturopathic methods of treatment and symptom management. Dr. Gurdev Parmar, clinical director of Fort Langley’s Integrated Health Clinic Cancer Care Centre, is enhancing survival and quality of life with his integrative approach. He has been offering cancer care since 2000 and has developed a highly respected professional approach to evidenceguided, patient-centred, naturopathic oncology.

“We don’t suggest any of our patients who are candidates for standard of care, use us as an alternative; however, we recommend that our patients integrate our treatments alongside their standard of care in that setting,” explains Dr. Parmar. As a leader in the field of Naturopathic Medicine, Dr. Parmar is committed to the highest levels of integrative cancer care available. He is the first Canadian naturopathic doctor to qualify as a Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology (FABNO), and chairs the Education Committee for the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians. The Cancer Care Centre was the first facility in Canada to integrate LocoRegional Hyperthermia (LRHT). The Oncotherm EHY-2000 Plus is the only LRHT device approved by Health Canada for use in integrative cancer care.

“It was a long process to get the device approved by Health Canada,” says Dr. Parmar. “Four and a half years ago they approved this LRHT device for the palliation of solid tumours.” The originally German LRHT has approximately 25 years of use worldwide, with many countries having granted approval for various tumourtypes. According to Dr. Parmar, their centre has now safely treated over 20 tumour-types with LRHT, having performed over 8,000 treatments. When asked whether it works better on some cancers: “After only four and a half years it’s difficult to answer it’s true statistical benefit.” The Cancer Care Centre identified three cancers with very poor survival rates, to retrospectively assess survival benefit: glioblastoma multiforme (average survival of 12 months), nonresectable pancreatic adenocarcinoma (3-6 months), and stage four colorectal cancer (12-15 months). Dr. Parmar reveals: “At both three and four years we were able to show a significant statistical difference in survival times in these three cancers, albeit with small sample sizes and without a prospective trial, which we are now actively pursuing.” “We’re showing impressive early results using state-of-the-art technology few in Canada are using,” says Dr. Parmar. “We treat patients from all over Canada and the U.S., and it’s all by word of mouth; we receive referrals from doctors from across the U.S. and Canada, and abroad.” Dr. Parmar’s message to patients is three-prong: “I want to continue improving the lives of people living with cancer; to continue to provide patients with the best, evidence-guided information available in integrated oncology; and to move forward with prospective clinical trials and publish our outcomes in a meaningful way.”

grace fertility Centre Couples facing fertility challenges have a great deal to consider when making the profoundly important choice of choosing a fertility clinic, success rates — yes, but also, other factors.

P

atients want to feel comfortable in their surroundings, receive continuity and quality care from specialists who provide state-of-theart in technology-advanced fertility options, and a service model that reflects professionalism and integrity. Vancouver’s Grace Fertility Centre meets these objectives. Founder and medical director of Grace Fertility Centre, Dr. Anthony Cheung is a reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist who established the clinic in 2011, equipped with a high-tech laboratory, including the latest gamete and embryo tracking and monitoring technology. Involved in research and education at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Dr. Cheung is an active member of the Graduate Program in Reproductive and Developmental Sciences at UBC. He teaches and mentors students at all levels: undergraduate, postgraduate, and post-doctoral and trains physician residents and fellows specializing in Gynaecological Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (GREI). As an academic fertility specialist for over 20 years, Dr. Cheung works with his dedicated and highly-qualified team of clinical, laboratory and support staff towards a balanced and comprehensive approach to fertility and reproductive medicine. “I started Grace because I felt I could make a difference with my years of

experience in clinical practice, research and education, particularly in research methodologies to make sense of the constant flow of new research findings,” reveals Dr. Cheung. “I have the perspective and wisdom to know what works and what doesn’t, balancing the art and science of clinical practice with empathy, patience and resolve.” “Being a boutique, highly specialized program allows tight quality control in a calm, supportive environment, resulting in excellent pregnancy success,” says Dr. Cheung. “Our pregnancy rate from one ovarian stimulated cycle can reach 82%.” “Many people think that the technology or techniques in a smaller program might not be as comprehensive,” says Dr. Bronwyn Williams, managing director. “On the contrary, with our cutting-edge laboratory setup, we are more nimble to provide individualized treatments best for our patients who are all known to our staff; this makes for a really nice, family-minded centre.” “Dr. Cheung and his staff at Grace Fertility Clinic were able to help me achieve something I had been told was not possible,” says Lesley, a former patient. “I got pregnant and had a healthy baby boy. Going through something like fertility treatment was very emotional with its ups and downs. The staff was like family, always kind and thoughtful when I arrived for my appointments. Working with people who made me feel comfortable made all the difference.” Dr. Cheung is continuously trying to find better and simpler ways to improve patient care and treatment success, while fostering the same spirit in his team. “The word “grace” implies kindness, compassion, elegance and sacredness and a privilege to serve,” say Dr. Cheung. “It’s both sacred and a privilege to work with embryos and to help patients having difficulty conceiving to create life, which bespeaks our motto: together, life.”

Dr. Sabrina Chen-See

Pediatric and Family Wellness Chiropractor

Kind, caring and graceful. These words best describe Dr. Sabrina Chen-See.

A

s you walk into her office you can’t help but be struck with the “un-doctor-like” atmosphere. From the warm tranquil colours to the explanatory posters hung on the wall, Dr. Chen-See creates a professional, yet inviting ambiance you wouldn’t expect in any old doctor’s office. This isn’t just your average office and Dr. Chen-See isn’t just your average chiropractor. She has a kind and caring face and moves with a grace that hints at her athletic abilities. Most doctors you come in contact with are more stoic and much less engaging. Meeting Dr. Chen-See will remind you of your favourite grade school teacher: smart, encouraging and wanting you to succeed. “Even though I’ve been in practice for 15 years, I never forgot why I got into chiropractic — to make a lasting difference in people’s lives,” says Dr. Chen-See. “As a child and teenager, I learned the hard way that good food and exercise are often not enough for good health. In spite of my healthy lifestyle, I still suffered from migraines, stomach ulcers, knee pain and more. I didn’t want pills to merely cover up the pain; I wanted to be well.” “I learned to live in fear of what would bring on the pain or discomfort. Out of fear, my world shrank. I distanced myself from others and began to lose trust in my body. My life changed with chiropractic. So much more than symptom relief, chiropractic gave me freedom from being in fear of pain and I learned to trust my body again. I got my life back!”

“I love seeing people break through their health limitations,” says Dr. ChenSee. “I don’t give up on people, even those with difficult cases. I do whatever I can to help that person’s body heal and function naturally.” “That is what my practice is about: giving hope to people for a more animated and fuller life, with a whole lot less pain.” Although Canada has the world’s best health-care system, there are people who need more personalized and hands-on care. Each of Dr. Chen-See’s patients are treated and recognized as individuals. While she is on the cuttingedge of chiropractic, she still takes the time to get to know each and every one of her patients. Along with digital X-ray technology in her office, she is the only chiropractor in Western Canada trained in both Atlas Orthogonal and Sacral Occipital techniques. This training allows her to assess and help people with conditions not normally associated with chiropractic care such as MS, concussions, bipolar disorder, infertility, behavioural and learning disorders and autism. Of particular note, she is certified in Chiropractic Pediatrics. “I treasure every opportunity to help someone get their life back. My patients say they appreciate the time I take to get to know them as well as give them the amount of care with the frequency they need to truly regain their health. You’re never just a patient. You’re a member of my family.” – Written by Dr. Kevin Pallis

F

ound on the north end of Commercial Drive at Venables, owner and pharmacy manager Robin Manweiler takes a different approach – treating people like people, getting to know them and working together for better health. “It’s not about being an authoritative figure,” says Robin. “It’s about being an equal with the people we serve. We dress casually in order to better relate to our customers.” Robin opened his pharmacy almost six years ago and has worked as a pharmacist for 18 years. “In order to improve the health of patients, trust is the key,” says Robin. “And when people feel you care, trust is the natural by-product.” “That’s how you go above and beyond,” noted Robin. “You have to want to make a difference for people. We work with patients who have simple health-care needs as well as those who have highly complex health issues. We cater to both groups equally.” As a full service pharmacy, Robin’s provides a complete range of prescription needs, over-the-counter medications and day-to-day items like toilet paper, toothpaste and skin moisturizers. And the unique design of the pharmacy provides a mom-andpop shop comfort, making people feel immediately at ease. “I think people appreciate that we carry a little bit of everything,” he says. “And if people feel at home when they come in, then taking care of their health becomes much easier.”

“We are now providing flu vaccinations for people who want them,” says Robin. “It’s just another way we can help our customers stay healthy and they don’t have to travel for it. They get the advice, medicine and support they need right here in their local community.” Robin believes in making his customers’ days better when they visit. “We strive to be a positive part of the community – we use humour to connect with people,” he commented. “We take a personal approach to health–care. It can be stressful and challenging to live in Vancouver with the high–cost of living, the rainy weather, and the state of the economy. We take it upon ourselves to make people smile or laugh to lighten the load.” It may be a different style of health care, but on Commercial Drive, it’s definitely appreciated. Robin knows there is more to health than just prescriptions. “There are significant benefits that come from interacting and connecting with people,” says Robin. “You have to be passionate about it and believe in helping others, and you need to be willing to put in the extra effort to make it happen.” Robin also helps others through his long-standing relationship with The Kettle Society. “The Kettle is an amazing organization that works selflessly to support people with mental health issues in Vancouver and I help in a small way by servicing their clients’ prescription needs,” says Robin. “The Kettle is truly a rock for mental health patients in our city, and I am humbled to be associated with them.” – Written by Ronda Eyben
