Alex Goldie and his wife Beth own the company while their three sons (Scott, Blake and Dallas) are an integral part of ensuring the business is the best it can be. A little over a year ago the company moved into a new 7,000 square foot building to accommodate the growing needs for the technology the metal shop requires. “We are technologically advanced,” Alex says of why their company has been selected for premium jobs like the new Inland Kenworth building, the RCMP detachment, Prince George Toyota and the Wood Innovation and Design Centre to name just a few. “The contractors and customers like working with us, they like how we do things and they like the equipment we’ve got.” Focused on commercial and industrial roofing and wall systems the company has state-of–theart equipment that has them taking jobs in other communities because they can handle the complexity of advanced designs other firms can’t. Customers of Admiral Roofing also like the customer service they receive that goes above and beyond the expected.

To stay ahead of the curve and help other roofing companies do the same, Admiral Roofing is a member of the Roofing Contractors Association of B.C. Angela Lesniewicz The realtor who knows Prince George best

PRINCE

GEORGE profiles of

EXCELLENCE

Written by Ronda Payne Angela Lesniewicz knows a thing or two about Prince George. She’s lived here since her family moved to the community when she was in just grade four. Who better to help others find their home than someone who has chosen to live in and love Prince George their whole life? Living in a community is one thing, but it takes more to be a great realtor. As a consistent MLS award winner and top producer since 1989, Angela has the bases covered. She’s been a realtor for 30 years, so knows the intricacies of the industry almost as well as she knows the community. She’s seen the changes in the area and can help buyers find what they want and help sellers get the most for their property. “It’s diverse here,” she says of her home town. “It’s affordable compared to many centres.” Angela works with first-time buyers as well as those who are more experienced to help them determine their needs and find the right property for their level of affordability. “Things are never the same in this business,” Angela notes. “The market is moving really quickly right now, so if you like a house, three or four other people will as well. We need to ensure you are prepared to make an offer or move on to the next property almost immediately.”

a highly regarded university and thriving college, excellent employment opportunities, outstanding health care and a moderate climate. She’s aware of what’s available to those looking for a new home because she knows the neighbourhoods and what each has to offer. Few realtors know the region as well. Making things easy for clients is one of Angela’s goals. For many she incorporates electronic signing. She regularly upgrades her education and stays current with evolving rules and regulations within the industry. “I work with a lot of very busy people,” she notes. “It’s important to me to work with their schedule and make things as seamless as possible for them.” She can even recommend outstanding lenders, insurers, inspectors and appraisers from those she has worked with. Angela sees herself as a cheerleader for the community and for her clients. For your next real estate transaction, look to someone who is ingrained in the community and dedicated to finding clients what they need.

In order to get her clients’ ready for house hunting, she meets with them to learn their history, wish list and expectations. She will then help them align their desires to the current market. Her approach when a client is selling is similar.

“I like to help my sellers see what is needed to get the best price,” she says. “They need to make their house as beautiful as it can be in the style of current décor trends. Street appeal and cleanliness continue to be imperative.” Angela sees Prince George as the ideal community for growing families. There are diverse outdoor activities, incredible theatre productions, a wonderful symphony,

A bank where a handshake is still worth something

PRINCE

GEORGE profiles of

EXCELLENCE

Written by Ronda Payne Just a year ago, one of Canada’s smallest banks transitioned to provide full-service banking in Prince George. Canadian Western Bank (CWB) may be smaller than the “big five” banks, but that’s what sets them apart – their unique brand of personalized service and focus on making a difference in the community. Derek Dougherty, Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager, notes Canadian Western Bank’s size is an advantage because it’s nimble and can be more responsive to client needs. “We offer the same products and services other banks do, but the way we do it is different, and we think, better,” he says. “We believe a handshake is still worth something. Local decision making is an important part of our commitment to our clients.” This means for certain lending deals, there’s no complicated process that might take weeks. Instead, as Derek explains it, if he likes a deal and it makes sense, he can approve it. If a deal is complicated, approval support is provided by our Edmonton based loan risk group who operate under the same CWB personalized, speedy service. “Many people have come to us panicked two days before the closing date of a real estate deal,” Derek explains. “They thought they had a deal, but the financing becomes a problem with the bank they had been working with. It leaves them high and dry.”

CWB does business. These are people-oriented individuals with boundless energy. They are prepared to make the relationship with their clients positive whether it’s a day-to-day transaction, setting up an RESP for kids or grandkids, arranging a group RRSP, discussing mutual funds or talking to the business account managers down the hall. “We’re a close team and this is a high-energy place to be,” notes Derek. “I work here and I have an amazing experience coming in each day. I want our clients to have the same experience, only better.” That pride and commitment to service ripples from the branch staff into the community with their culture to give to others. Derek personally gives his time and energy to the Prince George Chamber, the Downtown Business Improvement Association and a children’s charity that he’s witnessed grow in leaps and bounds. “A lot of staff take up an interest as part of that culture to give,” he says. “If we’re not good to our community, how can we expect it to be good to us?” For a different kind of banking experience, where people are treated like part of the community, visit Canadian Western Bank.

“We offer the same products and services other banks do, but the way we do it is different, and we think, better.” Derek Dougherty

Derek and his team can look at that deal and make it happen quickly if it’s a fit for CWB. “Being responsive to our clients’ needs is the biggest commitment to service we can make” he says. “We listen to our clients. I don’t think enough people do that. We find out what our client wants and needs to make their personal and business goals a reality. We want to be that trusted partner.” With the move full-service, Derek specifically chose the employees that were a fit to the way

Capri INsurance A full-service agency with a focus on northern commercial needs

PRINCE

GEORGE profiles of

EXCELLENCE

Written by Ronda Payne Don Gaboury knows people don’t love buying insurance. His goal isn’t to make them fall in love with it, but to ensure they see the value when they work with Capri Insurance. Capri offers all personal lines of insurance as well as all commercial and bonding needs. About a year ago, Don and his partner Jason Blackman brought their firm together with Capri Insurance and are one of the larger independent brokerages north of Vancouver. It gives this office – which has been part of Prince George for more than 60 years – greater flexibility, but the same focused service. “We talk to our clients to get to know their needs so we can adjust things with them,” Don says. “It’s just as important for them to know what coverage they have as it is to know what coverage they don’t have. Then they can be comfortable with their decisions.” It’s about educating customers on the basics of their insurance needs. The primary clients of Capri are resource industry-based contractors who have more on their mind than insurance coverage. Don and the Capri team work to provide the right amount of information so the process each year is easier.

sure you’re covered. Our clients have worked all their lives to build up their companies, their equity and their livelihoods. One bad insurance decision can change all that, and that’s what we want to prevent.” Don wants the team at Capri to be seen as advisors. It isn’t about buying and selling insurance as much as it’s about creating relationships to minimize risk and provide the right coverage. The close to 20 staff at Capri are a tight-knit group that brings their own passion to the mix. That means support and sponsorship of a widerange of activities in the community. “We tend to focus on what our employees are involved in,” Don says. “Whether that means time or money or helping to create awareness.” It’s a win/win for the community because staff bring forward what they are passionate about and fellow Capri Insurance team members jump on board to support the causes. Decades of experience and a genuine desire to share the true value in insurance; the team at Capri Insurance is ready for your needs.

“We can deal with our clients or their staff whether they are on the road or anywhere else,” Don says. “It’s the difference we experience in the north. We’re spread out, smaller, more remote communities and some of our clients are nine hours away. I want to make sure our process is effective and efficient.”

“One bad insurance decision can change all that, and that’s what we want to prevent.” Don Gaboury

Most insurance companies are large conglomerates that make the client adjust to their systems. The team at Capri tries to adapt their process to the client, their needs and expertise. “During the year, if something changes, they can call and make sure their insurance is still right for them,” says Don. “It’s one thing for a client to lose a $5,000 tool, but when it comes to liability, that’s the place you really want to be

College of New Caledonia Designing courses for specialized needs

PRINCE

GEORGE profiles of

EXCELLENCE

Written by Ronda Payne The College of New Caledonia (CNC) serves professionals, career changers and career starters by providing education in business, management, health care, trades, technology, arts and sciences, general interest and more. Students come to CNC to get a fresh start or to make their futures brighter. Steve Chase, Program Planner for the Community and Continuing Education department at CNC, helps build programs for a wide range of clients to fit the needs of both unemployed and underemployed individuals and helps them succeed as they move forward. One of the department’s most recent projects included a transitional program offered in partnership with Correctional Services Canada to help 16 previously incarcerated individuals reintegrate into society. “They came ready to invest and take advantage of this opportunity,” Steve says of the participants. “It was exciting to see the way doors opened for these individuals. There was a great response from the CNC community.” The program for these individuals included general life-skills such as health and safety, financial aid and resume creation. The goal is to create programs for groups based on their unique needs from trade or industryspecific courses to generic skills needed for life improvement. In the 2015-2016 year, the Community and Continuing Education department ran a number of life changing courses for individuals who haven’t graduated from high school, who work less than 20 hours a week or who are not eligible for Employment Insurance. Some of this year’s successful programming includes Construction Industry Training, Working in Natural Gas, Reintegration Industry Readiness Training Program, Aboriginals in Trades Training and Heavy Equipment Operator Training. “Four of the reintegration participants have

2016 Prince George Profiles of Excellence

already been funded into trades programs,” Steve notes. “They are on their way to being millwrights, welders, carpenters, social workers, admin assistants and more. Six individuals have found full time work.” The program introduced these individuals to job training and interpersonal skills while equipping them with industry recognized certificates. The funding also created two spots for graduates of the program to take one of CNC’s Foundation Trades Training programs. With flexible course schedules and program offerings across a number of campuses, CNC serves the full demographic of Northern BC. As Steve explains, because of the smaller size of the community and interconnectedness, the college is flexible and responsive making it possible to meet the needs of the region. “Our department offers a wide range of high quality programming options in some of today’s fastest growing career fields,” he says. “Our experienced instructors help students reach their educational goals through hands-on personalized instruction.” “We believe in connecting with community organizations whether on their site or at the college to help them with their training needs,” Steve adds. “We can help with pre-existing courses, like safety courses, or can custom build something to fit their needs.”

“Our department offers a wide range of high quality programming options in some of today’s fastest growing career fields.” Steve Chase

Going back to school isn’t always about picking up a course calendar and making a choice. Sometimes, it’s about being part of a group that has the ideal program created for them at The College of New Caledonia.

Curtis-Elite Security

Advanced technology for northern security needs

PRINCE

GEORGE profiles of

EXCELLENCE

Written by Ronda Payne Bringing new security technology north is the primary objective for Tony Curtis and Brian Bailey, co-owners of Curtis-Elite Security. They’ve made it their mission to see their company be based in the north and to service the north without any sacrifice on the equipment or security provided. Tony started Curtis-Elite in 1998 when the big national companies were centralizing in Toronto or going south of the border. “I saw it as a huge opportunity to invest in the north,” Tony says. “That’s when we put in our own central monitoring station, when other companies were taking local monitoring stations out. I couldn’t see how true security could be provided without being available to our customers 24/7 and keeping all of the expertise right here in Prince George.”

“It’s a special module that converts an old alarm system into the most sophisticated security system available,” says Paul. “There’s no need to throw out a perfectly good alarm system just because it communicates over an old-school phone line. With one of these modules an older system can communicate by internet or cellular, and our customers can use the Curtis-Elite app to enjoy complete remote control of their alarm system and enable amazing smart-home features.” With the approach of Curtis-Elite Security, they could be a metropolis-based organization in a region much larger than Prince George. “But I love the north,” Tony says. “The lakes, the rivers, it’s beautiful. I came up here to look around for a short period of time for work and I never left.”

As a full-service security company, Curtis-Elite takes care of residential alarms and monitoring, commercial accounts, small- to high-end surveillance systems and on-site security patrols. Available 24/7, customer service and support are the highest priorities for the company.

That pride in community is something Tony, Brian and the team of more than 40 individuals stay focused on. They’ve supported the Prince George Humane Society by installing cameras into adoption rooms and piping in music. They also donate to the Cancer Society and to local minor hockey and other sports teams.

“We invite everyone to visit our showroom to see the latest security technologies first-hand,” Brian says. “Our friendly staff Denise, Sherry and Lucilla along with our sales reps Jason and Brenden will show you how advanced local security can be. We recently brought true live video verification to the north. Rather than watch video the next day of a break-in, our proactive solution sends live video of any intrusion through the cloud to our monitoring station and to our customer’s mobile devices simultaneously. This enables immediate, authoritative response and our customers can watch the intruders in their premises in real time and witness their arrests.”

It’s actually easy to get the very best technology from a truly local company, when you’re a customer of Curtis-Elite Security.

Technical Director Paul Harford just brought another security first to Canada.

Dark star Crossfit A better quality of life through fitness

PRINCE

GEORGE profiles of

EXCELLENCE

Written by Ronda Payne Friends Rachel Dhansaw and Jon Gibson saw what CrossFit can do for overall health and decided to offer this unique, inclusive form of fitness to the residents of Prince George through their business CrossFit Dark Star. Their large open space offers all the equipment and training needed, but more than that, these workouts come complete with cheerleaders working out right next to you. “Gyms can be intimidating,” Rachel says. “CrossFit is completely different. It’s the most supportive atmosphere you can put yourself in.” All movements and exercises in CrossFit can be adapted to any fitness level or range of movement. Jon explains that each participant is assessed to gauge their fitness level and help them advance. Not only will CrossFit help them improve their strength, but it will also improve balance, endurance, flexibility and all 10 aspects of fitness. “My dad does CrossFit, he’s in his 60s,” Jon says. “He’s seen such an improvement in all areas of his personal fitness and has even lowered his blood pressure and improved his functional strength. It’s giving him better quality of life.” Both Rachel and Jon started on their CrossFit journey about four years ago. Jon had been playing hockey but was looking for the best way to stay fit. Rachel had been a trainer but wanted to take her fitness to the next level. Together they established their gym two years ago to provide what they call “functional fitness.”

Rachel and Jon have both had successes with CrossFit. Jon is a four-time CrossFit West Regional Athlete, having been ranked in the top in Canada for the last four years. Rachel approached CrossFit recreationally for overall fitness, but began training competitively a few months ago. She surprised herself to be among the top athletes in a four-week qualifier for the Can West Games which she subsequently places as high as 2nd and achieved an overall placing of 6th in eight events. Because CrossFit combines elements from a number of types of fitness, it’s sustainable and improves mental strength as well. Jon says it will get you in the best shape possible as fast as possible because it combines a little bit of everything. “That aspect is really important,” notes Rachel. “A CrossFit workout can be really taxing and you may want to stop, but with your community beside you helping you push through, you achieve more and that’s a huge boost for you mentally.” Rachel and Jon believe that CrossFit is the number one fitness methodology in the world. Find out for yourself at CrossFit Dark Star.

“CrossFit is completely different. It’s the most supportive atmosphere you can put yourself in.” Rachel Dhansaw

Those unfamiliar with CrossFit might think it’s dangerous and Rachel says nothing could be farther from the truth. “The more we get involved and learn about CrossFit and fitness in general, the more we find the importance of proper training, proper coaching and education of other people in fitness,” she says. “We have classes of 10 with a coach, so it’s a community environment but with someone there to help ensure everything is done right.”

A growing family-driven production business

Written by Ronda Payne Judy Russell grew up in a performance-related household so she was a natural to go into the industry, bringing her husband and sons with her. Enchainement Productions Inc. has grown to deliver outstanding performances to the community of Prince George from all angles. “They were hobbiests,” Judy says of her parents. “They had other careers, but spent their free time with the performing arts.” Judy’s mom was a dancer and dance teacher who came out of her retirement to help Judy establish her own dance studio. What started out as a dance studio grew to add a dance shop, then came Judy Russell Presents (which produces and creates large theatrical events and ballet performances), the technical aspects, management of the Prince George Playhouse and now the ticketing business. In fact, under the umbrella of Enchainement Productions are six performance-related entities. “It’s a busy time,” says Judy who also enjoys spending time with her three grandchildren. “Most of the recent changes in the business have been to allow our children to grow the business into what their dreams want it to be.”

Speaking of the team, it’s not just family, though it may feel like one, that runs the activities of Enchainement Productions. “There are a lot of employees. I’m proud to have had the opportunity to give people a lot of work,” Judy says. “A great deal of our staff I’ve trained myself. They’ve grown up here so they know the philosophy behind the business. They really bring a lot to the team.” In the early years of the business, Judy felt she and Bill had the ability to turn their business into what they wanted and now it’s time to allow the next generation the space to do the same. “We’d started something that became bigger than either of us were prepared for,” Judy says.” It became really important to us to maintain what we do.” With the incorporation of at least four more family members into the Enchainement Productions team, there will be plenty of performances to come for Prince George.

Judy and her husband Bill have three sons; two of them, Jonathan and Matt, have jumped into Enchainement Productions with their wives to create a true family and production-dedicated business.

The kids even introduced the idea of customizing a range of items through hydro dipping as part of Every Little Detail’s offerings. Every Little Detail specializes in automotive detailing and polishing but this company goes above and beyond in providing Super Liner box liners and Hydro Dipped Graphics. “We provide spray on Super Liner box liners and rock guard,” says Kari-Lynn. “It’s perfect for our roads and the tough jobs here in Prince George.” Super Liner comes in 13 stock colours or can be custom tinted to match the vehicle colour. The spray on protection is so durable that customers have had entire vehicle exteriors sprayed to make them perfect for off-road use. “We’re incredibly passionate about doing the best job possible at a reasonable price. It’s what we stand by,” Kari-Lynn says. “It’s the reason why, when we added Hydro Dipped Graphics, we went for training. We are the only certified company north of Kelowna and our customers love the flexibility of this unique product.”

While the hydro dipping engages some of KariLynn’s artistic side and allows her to provide something unique, the satisfaction of a job well done is why this family does what they do – seeing the transformation of a vehicle or item. Another transformation can come from driver training, which is Dwayne’s passion. He’s the owner and instructor of Every Little Detail Driver Training and can easily understand when someone is struggling with new information or a skill. Dwayne grew up with learning difficulties, and now applies that personal experience to helping others find different ways to learn. “He looks at things differently and understands when it’s hard to grasp complex information,” says Kari-Lynn. “He comes at teaching from different perspectives to help the student catch concepts and skills.” Having driven logging trucks for many years, Dwayne is a truck lover and enjoys helping people realize the dream of earning their license to drive a rig or other vehicle. For a car you can be proud of, the skills to drive it and customized items, Every Little Detail is ready to be part of your team.

“We’re incredibly passionate about doing the best job possible at a reasonable price. It’s something we stand by.” Kari-Lynn Karpes

Hydro dipping is fairly new to Canada, but if you’ve seen a vehicle with a decorative pattern on the panels, it has been hydro dipped. There are more than 90 patterns in stock and most can have the base coat colour changed, resulting in endless options to create custom looks for just about anything. “I have hydro dipped helmets, mugs, wine glasses, hard hats, rifle stocks, scopes, mailboxes, rims, visors, controllers, bows, and more. If it can fit in my tank and be submerged in water, I can dip it,” Kari-Lynn notes.

Finning Canada Local Caterpillar dealer with world-wide support

PRINCE

EXCELLENCE

Written by Ronda Payne The Prince George Finning branch was established back in 1949 with a focus on servicing the unique resource needs of the north. It isn’t just the excellent selection that makes the dealer an indispensable part of the community, it’s also the standard the company has stood by since its beginning in 1933 – they service what they sell.

handle it all.

Finning sells, rents, and leases the industry’s largest selection of equipment, over 300 different models. Cat products are the highest quality, most reliable equipment backed by the best parts and service support in the business.

Finning was built on the forestry industry when they began in 1933. Obviously being part of the north, forestry is still a big part of their business. It’s created numerous long-term relationships; some customers are now second and even third generation.

Pat McGuire, Product and Services Sales Manager for Prince George’s Finning Canada notes that purchasing the equipment is just the beginning. “Once you buy our product, that’s when the relationship really starts. We work with you to provide the after-sales support you need through the life-cycle of your equipment,” he says. The 15 acre site employs approximately 140 people, making it a significant employer in the community and one that believes working in the north shouldn’t be a detriment to keeping equipment running optimally every day. Numerous buildings on site house The Cat Rental Store, new equipment prep, machine overhaul, hydraulic cylinder rebuild and machining shop, parts warehouse, customer service repair shop, powertrain component rebuild shop, welding and fabrication shop, parts department, sales department and a fleet of mobile field service trucks. It’s a full-service operation that ensures the needs of your Cat equipment can be taken care of quickly, locally and with expertise. Not only can technicians take care of your every need, products are available on site. That’s the benefit of the 15 acre full service campus. They sell and repair the full spectrum of equipment from a mini excavator that can be driven through a building doorway to a mining shovel with an 80-yard bucket. – Big or small they

“We’re a huge supplier to the industry,” notes Pat. “You will see our product at construction sites, mines, pulp mills, saw mills, logging in the bush and even digging basements for new home builds.” “We are trusted partners in transforming our customer’s performance and business.”

“We’re dealing with friends and family,” says Pat. “That’s how we consider our customers. This is about relationships built around quality equipment that holds its value.” Cat equipment is far more affordable than one might think. Resale, rebuild options, productivity and reliability allow for significant long-term value that far outweighs the initial purchase price. The purchase price is a small investment when you consider the overall value. Plus safety is huge for the company. “Safety is our number one core value,” notes Pat. “It influences everything we do. Finning’s involvement in the community goes beyond what they sell and service. They are a big supporter of the Spirit of the North Health Care Foundation, the Festival of Trees and numerous other charities. Finning was also the official equipment supplier for the 2015 Canada Winter Games which left numerous legacies for the community.

“That’s how we consider our customers. This is about relationships built around quality equipment that holds its value.” Pat McGuire

She was also offered a position as a bridal headpiece designer in Toronto, but turned it down to continue to provide a local bridal experience. “I only want to work with beautifully made things,” she notes. “I don’t want to work with anything that is less than perfect.” Casey also donates dresses to associations like Prince George Dress Dreams, as well as donating part of the proceeds from the jewelry she makes to a women’s charity in the community. “I love what I do because I’m fulfilled by it,” she says. “I see other people’s joy in the whole process and that really makes me happy.” If you desire beautifully made bridal fashion and the people who understand how important your big day is, you need to see Casey at The Gallery Bridal Boutique on 7th.

I can make custom pieces on request. If you can dream it, I can make it.” Casey sees the demands put on brides when planning their wedding to make everyone happy. She wants her boutique to be a place for them to be appreciated and understood. “Every bride needs validation and to be accepted for who they are,” says Casey. Written by Ronda Payne As a highly-qualified team of natural resource professionals, Kim Forest Management (KFM) has the expertise needed to assess, manage and complete forest management and forestry operation projects by working hand-in-hand with clients throughout the entire process. Owner, Dave Kim knew from an early age that he wanted to work in the forestry industry making it natural for him to establish in Prince George and start KFM 20 years ago. “We do operational work for our clients. We’ll discuss an area that is targeted for harvesting, visit the location to do reconnaissance, analyze our findings then report back to the client,” Dave says. If the project is to proceed, KFM will mark out logging roads and boundaries, provide ecological assessments including any streams and will make suggestions on responsible harvest methods to reduce environmental impacts. Post-harvest, the team will go back to the site to check on re-forestation. “While some clients need us for only certain things for their project, there are others, like a few of our First Nations partners that we will work with end-to-end,” notes Dave. “We go a bit deeper and can manage their rights to harvest, create plans, explore business opportunities and advise on other forestry matters.”

for the last 15 years, KFM has contributed to a unique fundraiser with the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. Throughout the year employees make donations and the company matches them, then at Christmas the funds buy bacon, eggs, sausage, Mandarin oranges, candy canes and more. The staff cook up the meal and share it with the less fortunate at the Saint Vincent de Paul soup kitchen. “It’s definitely an event we all look forward to here,” he says. “We don’t want to just give money and wash our hands of it. This works really well for us.” The KFM team is a strong one that recognizes the importance of their role in the forestry industry. With excellent products and services, they help clients move forward in their plans while ensuring sustainable harvesting and regeneration. “Our clients are long term clients,” notes Dave. “We enjoy working with corporations and First Nations partners and have built up some great relationships.” For forestry expertise in a team passionate about the industry look to Kim Forest Management.

“While some clients need us for only certain things for their project, there are some, like a few of our First Nations partners that we will work with end-to-end.” Dave Kim

In the cases of clients looking for an end-to-end relationship, KFM can even arrange harvesting contractors and planters to ensure management of the complete project while working closely with the client. “When I was a summer student, I came through Prince George as a tree planter,” Dave says. “Then when I graduated from the University of Toronto, I came to Prince George as a bit of a springboard into British Columbia, but the community got its hooks in me. It’s a great place to raise a family. We love it here.” Because of Dave’s passion for the community,

Lo ElliotT Orthodontics Inc.

A family focused on great smiles

Written by Ronda Payne When Dr. Francine Lo’s father (Dr. Frank Lo) was an orthodontist he was part of the team that established the Lakewood Dental Centre. Dr. Francine saw the pride her dad took in his job and the importance he placed on both his business and the smiles of his patients. It rubbed off on her as she now works with her husband in her father’s former practice. “It’s been a wonderful experience. Dad was very progressive, He taught us so much about running a business,” she says. “We were so fortunate to have him as a mentor. I don’t think many other orthodontists have the opportunity for a mentor like that.” Her dad stayed involved up until his retirement, even coming out of retirement briefly to help when Dr. Francine was on maternity leave. She met her husband Robert Elliott at university, he graduated before her and got involved in the family practice first. Then, after a brief stint as a general dentist, Dr. Francine realized she was meant to do orthodontics and also joined. Many things have changed in the field over the years as Dr. Francine explains. “Times have changed. Even 10 years ago it wasn’t as acceptable for adults to have braces, now a quarter of our patients are adults and it’s growing,” she says. “More adults can afford it and may have been unhappy with their smile or how they are biting.”

match the holidays or a sports team.” Some patients, with mild issues, can take advantage of the Invisalign products, or may be able to use a combination of Invisalign with the brackets. “There’s a lot of different options for people,” Dr. Francine says. There’s also flexibility for Dr. Francine and Dr. Robert in that they share time with their kids and time at work. “We share everything, it’s a great trade-off,” she said. The couple also spends time being part of their community. Dr. Francine was born and raised in Prince George so it’s important to her that they give back. “We have three scholarships we offer to highschool students who are former patients,” she notes. “We also support sports teams, music, dance and other forms of the arts.” The team at Lo Elliott are involved with the Canadian Cancer Society so put on in-office events to keep things fun and exciting. Life at this office is always interesting and the ideal place to have orthodontic work done.

The majority of Dr. Francine and Dr. Robert’s patients go with the standard fixed braces, but even these have changed over time. Gone are the days of “metal mouth”, now the brackets are porcelain and more tooth colour, to blend in with the teeth more. Even the wires can be white to reduce visibility. “The little ties that wrap around the brackets come in all sorts of colours, so the kids like that they can pick these,” Dr. Francine says. “They can change them every six to eight weeks and

Mainline Plumbing and Heating

Day or night you can count on Mainline

PRINCE

Written by Citizen Staff It’s a typical Prince George winter story. You feel a chilling loneliness, staring at the faucet with its mouth open as wide as yours, and nothing comes out of either one. Your eyes look out the window at the cold wind blowing the snow down the dark street. You know those icy fingers are wrapped around the throat of the pipes in your house. You look at the clock. It’s 3am. You look at the breath coming from your mouth, as the air is bone chilling in your home. There is no 911 to call for this kind of thing but there is 250-564-9808. You dial. Someone answers. You tell them the situation. The voice assures you there is help on the way. You realize you were probably loud and stressed on the phone but the dispatcher got you back on track. The professionals at Mainline Plumbing & Heating were on the case immediately and on their way over to you right that minute. No matter how long it took, no matter how challenging the problem, they’d get it right for you. When you ask them, pulse racing, how much this was all going to cost, the reasonable estimate was one more warm blanket Mainline wrapped around you that night. Mainline Plumbing & Heating has met thousands of Prince George people in moments like this. Things freeze, things plug, things break, sometimes the reason doesn’t seem clear at all, but the inner workings of a building’s circulatory system are what these technicians are trained for and experienced 24/7. For Brian and Val Marsh, the owners of Mainline in Prince George, this is one of the most exciting cities in Canada to do this kind of work. It’s an affordable place to buy a home, invest in a business, get your profession well underway and family.

They have established themselves to say yes to people wanting on-demand hot water systems, cutting edge fireplaces, pellet grills, furnaces built for our cold winters and our modern times. “We have to have a team that’s as high-quality as the products and services we offer,” said Brian. “The people who work day and night for Mainline are the best there is. We brought in the best the Prince George region has, we even had to look outside of Canada to find some of our professionals, and that’s why we stand behind our work so strongly. Because our team reflects our city. When that phone rings in the middle of the night, it could be one of us in need. If we hire someone that moves here to work for us, we are going to make sure we have the products and services that make that investment a permanent one in Prince George. That’s what we do for our people, so that’s what we do for everyone.”

NR Motors Ltd. 50 years of friendships built in recreation

PRINCE

Written by Ronda Payne Greg Nikkel, General Manager of NR Motors says gardening is the number one form of recreation. However, that is just part of the diverse lines of recreation and equipment products available at the family-run business which is entering its 50th year of serving Prince George. From RVs and marine to a wide range of equipment such as John Deere, Stihl and Avant – plus all the accessories – NR Motors has your seasonal recreation needs covered in one location. Fifty years ago the business began as a small service station that eventually added RVs with “For Sale” signs. It grew into a greatly respected RV/marine dealer and the NR Motors name stuck. In fact, NR Motors has the largest selection of recreational products and equipment in Northern B.C.! “We’ve been very fortunate, products for recreation are products people want,” Greg says of his family’s business. “My mom and dad still work here every single day along with my sister Donna who manages our parts department. It’s very much a family business.” There is no sales person following you around at NR Motors – unless that’s your ideal shopping experience. Greg and his family believe in treating customers with respect and courtesy whether it’s on the showroom floor, at the service department or in the fully-stocked ski shop. They let people explore in a relaxed atmosphere. The NR Motors team feels it’s their job to help customers get exactly what they want and with some staff members being part of the business for more than 30 years their experience helps customers make highlyinformed decisions. “We have everything for your recreation and equipment needs,” notes Greg. “For some that means camping so we have RVs, tent trailers, campers and more, plus all the equipment someone might need. For boaters, we have fishing boats, speed boats and ocean boats along with water skis, wakeboards, life vests,

downriggers and more.” In the winter, NR also offers full lines of Nordic, Alpine and snowboarding equipment as well as the accessories and service required. Then of course there is the large selection of landscaping and gardening equipment to meet your needs for any time of year whether it’s a snowblower, backhoe or a lawn tractor. Plus the in-house parts and service departments ensure your purchase will always be taken care of in the right way, by fully trained professionals who understand all aspects of their products. Having been part of the community for 50 years means the Nikkels find it important to stay involved and give back to Northern B.C. “It’s home. There’s 50 years of friendships, customers, school and business here.” Greg says. “Everybody has their thing that they like to get involved with. Whether it’s the Ness Lake Bible Camp, local snow mobile clubs, motocross clubs, ski/snowboard teams, fishing derbies or great charities like the Cops for Cancer and others.” Like Greg, most of the more than 65 staff members at NR Motors grew up and live in Prince George, so it’s important to the entire team give people a good deal and take care of them.

Pacific Western Brewing Co. Pure mountain water and passion brew great beer

PRINCE

GEORGE profiles of

EXCELLENCE

Written by Ronda Payne It was 25 years ago when Kazuko Komatsu brought her entrepreneurial spirit and Samurai heritage to Pacific Western Brewing (PWB). She recognized the value of the employees and the spring of pure mountain water that the brewery had been built around. Based on those strengths she purchased the brewery in 1991. She knew she could create a strong brand and develop an international reputation from the brewery originally built in 1957. Kazuko continues to make use of quality and innovation as the seventh, and longest-standing owner of the brewery. Because she would not compromise on quality PWB became the first North American brewery to obtain the ISO 9001 quality manufacturing standard in 2004. “That was followed by another first,” says Tom Leboe, PWB’s consulting manager. “The brewery was the first in Canada to be awarded a gold medal at the Industry International Awards in Munich Germany and coincidentally, last year we added German-born Henrik Braun to the team as our brewmaster.” Over the course of Kazuko’s ownership of the brewery, she has sought out markets for PWB products throughout B.C., Alberta, Japan, the U.S., China, Argentina, France and Russia while also growing the employee base to about 70 and supporting a wide range of community initiatives. “Kazuko Komatsu and Pacific Western Brewery are very good corporate citizens,” Tom notes. “We make significant donations to the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation, UNBC and the College of New Caledonia as well as many major sporting events.” PWB has also supported the 2015 Canada Winter Games, a number of charities – including the Prince George Foundation – the three Prince George Rotary Clubs and others.

2016 Prince George Profiles of Excellence

As well, Kazuko has a passion for environmental projects. She developed a program to replant B.C. forests devastated by the effects of the Mountain Pine Beetle, and has committed to planting one million trees by 2020. This initiative supports the community as well as lumber and silviculture industries in B.C. The Water Shoreline Clean-up and salmon stock rehabilitation projects round out a few of the past environmental projects PWB has supported. “We are a secondary manufacturer not tied to the cyclical forest industry,” Tom says. “We are proud to contribute to our community and generate economic spinoff for several local suppliers.” PWB may be classified as a mid-sized brewery, but it is nimble in comparison to global competitors like Labatt or Molson. It’s Kazuko’s commitment to continually increase awareness of the quality of PWB world-wide that has allowed her to develop the brand globally. Kazuko decided to make a beer solely with ingredients from the province we call home. Cariboo Springs Lager not only supports hard working BC farmers and families that make our craft possible, but it also utilizes ingredients from their craft. PWB is the brewery for all British Columbians.

“The brewery was the first in Canada to be awarded a gold medal at the Industry International Awards in Munich Germany.” Tom Leboe

“Pacific Western has always represented the strong history of BC brewing around the world. Now, we stand collaboratively with our agricultural neighbours,” Kazuko says. Lift a glass of one of PWB’s products to find out what local really tastes like.

PRINCE

Written by Ronda Payne Pine Centre has long been the core of activity in Prince George. As far as shopping centres go, this one is dynamic and poised to continue as a hub for the region with the outstanding team that has joined General Manager, Sonya Hunt. “These are the people who will show our community how vibrant shopping centres can be,” Sonya says. Bozidar (Bo) Gujic, Guest Services Supervisor; Rachel Olson, Marketing Director; Paulo Branco, Operations Manager; and Keriann Harlow, Specialty Leasing Manager is the team of dedicated professionals bringing even more excitement to the community both through their passion for Pine Centre and Prince George. “I have lived in many towns, but here in Prince George, people are genuinely interested in helping others,” says Keriann. Keriann’s role of showcasing what Pine Centre has to offer to potential lease-holders is exciting for her because of the opportunity to create relationships while also delivering the products and services Prince George residents are looking for. It allows her to build partnerships while building the “face” of Pine Centre’s offerings. Like Keriann, Paulo had lived in Prince George previously and found the opportunity with Pine Centre to be a great way to “come back home.” “The opportunity to work in and manage a prominent building in our community is exciting,” Paulo, says. “Pine Centre is almost a community hall for the city. This place brings people together.” Because many visitors to Pine Centre use the facility as a social gathering, meeting and even exercise space, Paulo knows how important it is to ensure the comfort of the facility in all aspects from temperature to janitorial services and safety. Having grown up in the community, Paulo is focused on providing that place for togetherness – no matter what the season – so

that people continue to feel welcome and retail opportunities continue to thrive. Another individual heavily involved in looking out for visitor experiences is Bo. With his background in the hospitality industry, Bo is creating a new, fresh and exciting Guest Service Centre and has already spent time with more than 2,000 guests to discuss their impressions of the facility. “This is a very exciting time for Pine Centre,” says Bo. “I am fortunate to work with an incredibly passionate and dynamic team with a clear and solid vision for the future – there are some exciting new developments in the works!” Rachel is responsible for communicating that growing excitement to Prince George and surrounding communities. “We are the only enclosed shopping centre in Northern B.C.,” Rachel says. “And here you have the best of both worlds – the outdoors and the shopping centre at your door step.” Throughout the year, Rachel also works with local community groups to help them raise funds for activities to benefit the region and its residents. She notes that the diversity of Prince George is definitely part of the excitement felt within the shopping centre. Keep watch for the exciting changes and activities planned at Pine Centre that will make your shopping experience even better.

Written by Ronda Payne Tom Coffey started with Premium Truck and Trailer Inc. in 1979 when he moved to Prince George. He was a truck mechanic and always had a passion for trucks and the trucking industry, so the job was ideal for him. While the business went through a few changes over the years, so did Tom. He worked his way up becoming a partner and sales manager in 1995. In 2004 he bought out the remaining partner and became General Manager. In 2010, he changed the business’s name to Premium Truck and Trailer with Tom as the President and General Manager. Prince George was also a great fit for Tom, he fell in love with the small town feel and numerous outdoor activities. Naturally, being around those from his community allowed Tom to see what their needs were and provide the very best in truck and trailer sales and service – not just in Prince George but in four other B.C. Interior communities as well. “We’ve grown over the years,” he says. “We have about 130 employees now with our head office in Prince George and branch locations in Terrace, Williams Lake, Kelowna and Kamloops. We also have a body shop and an in-house financing company here in Prince George.”

to take care of their customers. Just like Tom and his team, Premium’s customers are small business people who work and live in Prince George. “There’s no passing the buck here,” says Tom. “We make our decisions here, there’s nowhere else to call. If we say we’re going to do something we have to do it. If we make a promise we can’t hide behind a head office somewhere.” Tom describes his customers as friends. His success depends upon their success and their success depends upon Premium Truck and Trailer providing the right vehicles, right parts, right service and expertise. “Some companies can lose sight of that,” he says. “They get caught up in formalities and forget they are in the customer service business.” Tom and his team are also in the business of supporting their community. Over the years they have participated in local events, supported local sports teams and a number of other local charities. For truck and trailer sales and service from people who understand the value of doing things locally, visit Premium Truck and Trailer.

Through Premium, customers can purchase both new and used trucks and trailers as well as parts. Doepker and K-Line trailers are offered at all the locations and Freightliner trucks are available at four of the five locations. It’s everything needed to purchase a truck, keep it running and trade it in when it’s time. “We’re in the relationship business,” notes Tom. “In our business people buy from people. Our average customer is an owner/operator or a small fleet operator involved in the resource industries like logging, mining or heavy haul.” The strength of Premium Truck and Trailer is its many long-term employees who know how

Written by Ronda Payne Prince George Motors, a Ford of Canada dealership, is coming up fast on its 50th anniversary in November and has been a business in the community for 110 years! These are huge milestones, but ones that General Manager Fred Nelson wants to celebrate only after a very important group of people are recognized – the staff of Prince George Motors. This group of approximately 100 individuals is dedicated to their community in a way that should be acknowledged. Their individual passions for various causes creates a year-round hub of activity and synergy that ensures the team is always ready to support something near and dear to this Ford Family’s heart. “I sincerely believe the team’s dedication starts with the sense of community within our workplace,” Fred says. “The catalyst for that is the ‘Ford Family’ vision Ford has fostered over its entire history.” Fred believes the Ford Family vision creates an atmosphere of belonging to a bigger community – Prince George. “This is a great community that provides the full gamut of educational, career and lifestyle opportunities surpassing virtually all of the needs and expectations of our employees,” notes Fred. The employees of Prince George Motors participate in many community events. Fred says the events are opportunities not only to support great causes and activities, but to also speak to a diverse group of people from varying cultures and demographics about the event, the community and more. “Participating in these community-based activities provides all of us an opportunity to contribute and engage,” Fred says. “After all, the people of Prince George make up our team’s customers, friends and family and generally speaking, each of us here at Prince George

Motors is touched or impacted personally by the causes these organizations represent.” Fred sees it in his employees: everyone feels this community is “home.” The place where they work and play and care for each other. Just a few of the things supported and/or sponsored by the team at Prince George Motors in the past include: The 24 Hour Relay for Life, The Wheelin’ Warriors (Ride to Conquer Cancer team),The Cops for Cancer Tour, The University of Norther British Columbia, The SPCA and the Midget Cariboo Cougars. Coming up, look for members of the Prince George Motors team in promotional activities for The Wheelin’ Warriors ride in August – employee Ron Gallo will be one of the warriors riding. Also in August, the team will be helping raise funds for the Cops for Cancer Tour on the 19th alongside local RCMP members; and, together with The Pattison Group and Dave Mothus, they are raising funds for a school in Ghana Africa. These and other activities will be coming up soon so keep an eye out for the community involvement of Prince George Motors.

“I sincerely believe the team’s dedication starts with the sense of community within our workplace.” Fred Nelson

None of this would be possible without dynamic and industry-leading ownership. Prince George Motors is a great place to work with a fun-filled atmosphere driven by great staff and fueled by an amazing community spirit.

Written by Ronda Payne Jonathan De La Giroday often said if he won the lottery his dream job would be to own and work in a recreational sport dealership with all of his favourite toys like ATVs, street bikes, snowmobiles and more. While he didn’t win the lotto, his dreams have come true now that he’s the Managing Partner with Prince George Motorsports.

so we sell fantastic products, we stand behind our products, we have great service and we have competitive pricing.”

Adding to that dream is the fact that the existing location will be moving to a larger facility in September.

The link to clubs and groups that are involved in outdoor recreation is something Jonathan and the 13 employees at the dealership enjoy supporting. They sponsor groups like the Prince George Motocross Association, the Prince George ATV Club, the Prince George Snowmobile Club and many others.

“It’s going to be bigger. Much bigger,” Jonathan says. “There will be more on the showroom floor. There are a lot of things we just can’t display now because there’s not enough space, so all our inventory – everything we store offsite – will now be shown off in one great big showroom.” The new location will allow Prince George Motorsports to show the community just how big it really is and how many fun items there are to offer. “We are a recreation sport dealer that sells Yamaha and Arctic Cat,” notes Jonathan. “We provide the very best for the outdoors enthusiast.”

Jonathan believes that all these things combined give outdoor enthusiasts the ability to head outdoors with confidence, knowing their product will perform the way they expect. They can focus on the time spent with family and friends.

“There are a number of clubs that we donate to, to help support their activities, keep people involved in those groups, ensure that trails and tracks are protected and maintained and to encourage fun in the outdoors,” he says. Find out just how much fun riding around outside can be on a Yamaha or Arctic Cat from Prince George Motorsports.

“We provide the very best for the outdoors enthusiast.” Jonathan De La Giroday

The very best was on display at the dealership recently when the Yamaha Canada Power Tour came through with their demo day. Jonathan had the joy of hopping on various motor cycles and taking people around town to try them out. For him and his clients, it was a great day of seeing what Yamaha has to offer. But, getting involved in sports vehicles is more than just drooling on the latest and greatest models available. Jonathan notes there is a very important social aspect that comes from being outdoors and spending time with others. “This allows people to be part of clubs and social groups so they can connect and come together over a common interest,” he says. “That’s a big part of what we do. People come in here who are passionate about these sports,

Prince George Veterinary Hospital Half a century of caring for local pets

PRINCE

Written by Ronda Payne Growing up in Prince George, Dr. Deb Kalyn always knew she would be a vet. She’s been helping people take exceptional care of their companions for 25 years and owns Prince George Veterinary Hospital, which has been part of the community since 1967. With six veterinarians, six registered animal health technologists and fifteen other support staff, Dr. Deb’s team can provide complete care. This includes a full array of surgical procedures, diagnostics, preventative care and overnight stays if necessary. The clinic has been an accredited member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) since 1990 and is the only AAHA accredited hospital in Prince George. This is a significant accomplishment given that veterinary hospitals are evaluated on approximately 900 standards of veterinary excellence in order to become accredited. To maintain this status, hospitals must undergo comprehensive on-site evaluations every three years. The schooling and experience of the veterinarians and other team members at the hospital means they know the physiology, medicine and science behind what they do, but everyone also respects the fact that pet owners know their pets better than anyone else. “I find it rewarding to work with people and help them develop the bond with their pets,” Dr. Deb says. “Their pets are part of their family. Each of us here is unique in our approach, but everyone is very caring and compassionate. It’s a team effort.” That team effort includes helping educate people about their pets, any problems they may have and assisting with issue and disease prevention. Dr. Deb sees it as working together with pet owners rather than simply doling out information.

2016 Prince George Profiles of Excellence

“Some clients have been with us for generations,” she says. “The kids are now bringing their pets in after they came in with their parents years ago. We want to provide them with new information in a sharing way. We listen, do our best to understand, then provide support and expertise.” The approach from this family-like group of animal-lovers extends through every interaction from answering the phones, to taking a brief history in an exam room to understanding the concerns that brought pet and owner to the clinic. Everyone and every animal is treated with compassionate care and the team does their best to ensure all questions are answered. Having been part of the community for half a century means supporting different local activities. “Our team is great; many of our staff have been here for a very long time,” notes Dr. Deb. “We are very much a part of the community.” The team has participated in numerous activities in Prince George including the 24 Hour Relay for Life for the last 10 years, a major sponsorship of the local SPCA’s Paws for a Cause as well as support for the local humane society.

Written by Ronda Payne Not many people love helping their friends manage their money, let alone their own, but from a young age, Rebecca Sinclair made use of online tools to do just that. Her role now, as a Certified Financial Planner/Independent Financial Advisor with Raymond James Ltd. isn’t all that different from when she helped her friends. She’s still helping people that she cares about, achieve their financial dreams. “As an independent Financial Advisor, I choose every product for every client,” Rebecca says. “Some advisors use checklists and put people into boxes of stock products; I don’t want to do that. People are individuals and their investments are just as individual. It takes more time to do it this way, but I know my clients are better taken care of.” The first thing Rebecca wants to know about any client, family or group of clients is who they are, what’s important to them and what their values are. She doesn’t start with a review of someone’s assets, she starts with a review of the person. Part of being an advisor like Rebecca is the ability to ensure clients are the right fit, so that initial meeting is about getting to know each other to ensure the working relationship is going to be right.

She’s the Vice President of the board for the Drug Awareness Recovery Team Society (DART) which helps recovering addicts build employment skills in a caring workplace. She also supports the Salvation Army and Prince George Pregnancy Centre. In addition, she supports the Prince George Symphony Orchestra each year as well as various sporting events, local artists and other important activities and charities in the community. Finding the right financial advisor isn’t about how much money you have – it’s about building a relationship with someone who cares.

“If I know who someone is, I can then find the right tools in my tool box for smaller niche things or larger broad things,” she says. “When I know someone, I know their specific needs and can help find the right pieces to achieve their goals.” Rebecca has earned her insurance license, securities license and CFP designation so that she can offer a full range of products to her clients for their unique needs. Once she understands who her clients are, she reviews what assets they have, what they don’t have and what they need to reach their goals and dreams. “I love problem solving, it comes naturally to me,” notes Rebecca. “I love putting things together for people’s lives to make their

Written by Ronda Payne Brent Scheck was born and raised in Prince George, so he brought his business, Scheck Construction, to the community in 2007 when he moved back to be closer to family. “It’s a great place to live,” Brent says of the city he calls home. “It’s a tight-knit community. It’s big, but it doesn’t seem as big as it is. There are lots of great people in this town, lots the community has to offer and it’s a great place to raise a family.” Brent believes in helping others raise their families here in the house of their dreams. He wants to talk to people, get to know them and learn about what they want in a home – that’s what Scheck construction does – they build dream homes. “The overall job is what we pride ourselves on,” he says. “It’s about quality work. People are spending a lot of money on a house and it’s a big decision. I think giving them a quality product at a fair price is very important.”

since I was a kid. You do a quality job, you work hard, you do your best. I couldn’t sleep at night if I just went in and did a half-ass job.” Even clients who won’t be living in the home get an excellent job from Scheck Construction. Brent and his team have been donating a portion of the labour on the Prince George Spruce Kings Junior A Hockey club fundraising show home for six years straight. “We’ve tried to do something different in every house, I do all the architectural designs,” Brent says. “My wife works on the interior design aspects and the finishes. It helps support junior sport and gives back to our community.” From the revision and redraw of your plans to meeting at the cabinet shop or flooring store, Brent Scheck takes the time to look after his customers. He wants them to love their new home and helps make it as easy as possible.

As one of Prince George’s premier residential builders, Brent has a solid team of experienced, qualified, licensed professionals behind him who take the job as seriously as he does. They work hard, doing their best to ensure the job is done right while Brent comes to each site as often as once a day to meet with homeowners and discuss the project.

“At the end of the day, I want the homeowner to be happy,” notes Brent. “I’m going to accommodate them as best I can because I’m not happy until they are happy. That’s why I want to work directly with them on site.” Brent describes his team as “super guys who know the client comes first” as well as being excellent tradespeople. Written by Citizen Staff Why go to the park when you can have a park-like setting in your own yard? Russ Hill of Suntree Land Design delivers the park experience to homeowners and commercial clients with creative design and beautiful landscaping. Now in his 13th year, Hill brings plenty of experience to not only deliver the desired look and style but also the amount of maintenance each customer is prepared to do. “Some customers want to enjoy the space without having to do much upkeep but others like to be more hands-on, to be part of keeping it looking great,” Russ said. “That way they can take credit for it!” he added, laughing. That means getting to know their customers, their preferences and their vision for the job. Some clients call Suntree with their own specific plans while others are prepared to just put their faith in Suntree’s expertise. Depending on the complexity of the job, Russ will include pictures and even samples of brick or rock with his estimate so that his clients can not only see a sneak preview, they can even touch it for themselves. Either way, Russ said, the job’s not finished until the client is happy and proud of the final result. Suntree Land Design is a full-service landscaping company for both commercial and residential properties. Russ and his team can install full irrigation systems, lawns, trees, shrubs, any kind of driveway, patios and retaining walls, as well as the luxury aesthetics features, such as planters, ponds, waterfalls and elaborate rock work. They’re comfortable working in any environment, from existing spaces in need of refreshing but new sites in need of a spectacular finish to complement the property. There are numerous examples of Suntree’s fine work across Prince George. Some of their commercial work includes the brick

work at Canada Games Plaza, the brick work, as well as soil and plant installation, at the Via Rail building, and full-service landscaping at Wood Wheaton Honda, Northland Dodge and Northland Nissan. Raised in Prince George, Russ knows what kind of landscaping works for the area, so that it’s looking great during all four seasons and doesn’t break down or cause problems in the snow and cold of winter or the sun and heat of summer. As a result, he works closely with the local nurseries to get the right plants that will flourish and look great for years to come. As for winter, the work doesn’t end for Russ and his team, who offer snow-clearing services during the cold months of the year Whether it’s homeowners wanting to increase the value of their property and wow the neighbours with a beautiful yard or commercial property owners wanting to attract customers with welcoming landscaping, Russ Hill at Suntree Land Design has the knowledge and the experience to deliver an excellent outdoor look.

Dr. Tessa von den Steinen Treating patients like family

PRINCE

Written by Ronda Payne In the Lakewood Dental Building, you’ll find a General Family Dentist who was born and raised in Prince George and loves the sense of small town living within the growing community. Dr. Tessa von den Steinen started her dental practice back in 2008 as an associate for Dr. Steinbart – one of the founders of Lakewood. She took over his practice when he retired and can’t imagine being a dentist anywhere else. “I’m a very social person,” Dr. Tessa says. “You bump into patients at Costco and around town, it’s a bunch of friends everywhere you go.” The relationships are perhaps what she loves most about being a dentist. She builds relationships with her patients every time she sees them. Not only is she talking about their teeth and oral health, she’s also learning about their vacations, witnessing children growing up and appreciating the important parts of their lives. “It’s a fantastic job where you gain these amazing relationships with people,” she says. “I get to hear about their life every six months.” While many people think of dentistry as being a strictly medical or scientific process, Dr. Tessa notes that there is an artistic aspect to the job as well.

“It’s endless and ever-evolving,” Dr. Tessa says of the materials that can be used for all the various procedures in dentistry. “It’s another fun part of the job, you can’t get stagnant because you’re constantly learning and evolving with new materials and new techniques.” Growing up in Prince George, Dr. Tessa spent a great deal of time with Judy Russell of Enchainement Productions both as a dance student and as a mentor. She credits this focus with making her successful in her adult life and keeping her out of trouble as a youth. “Now that I have my own little girl, we’re back at the dance studio and I’ve been putting more of my energy in to support the place that helped guide me,” notes Dr. Tessa. She also loves the fact that the tight-knit community has all the amenities of a big city but is a community that helps each other and pulls together. For a dentist who genuinely cares about her patients – both their mouths and their lives – Dr. Tessa von den Steinen in the Lakewood Dental building is always ready to bring new friends into her circle.

“It’s a fantastic job where you gain these amazing relationships with people.” Dr. Tessa von den Steinen

“We’re in a very aesthetic society these days, so it’s the artistic working with the scientific using a range of materials,” she notes. “Every day I’m trying to regain that person’s ‘perfect’ smile or perfect oral health to recreate their optimal smile. The way it was when they were 16.” In helping to recreate that perfect smile Dr. Tessa may use a wide range of materials, some of which are impregnated with fluoride to be released into the tooth and provide antibacterial properties. A filling like this will work to help repair the tooth. In crown and bridge work, there is even a greater range of materials.

Twisted Cork Restaurant Casual fine dining with a great mix

Written by Ronda Payne Troy McKenzie and co-owner/Chef Chris Angus knew if they were to go back into the food and beverage business, it would be as restaurant owners. They did just that seven years ago with The Twisted Cork Restaurant. This blend of casual fine dining is the kind of place Prince George residents enjoy a great meal comfortably. “We knew we wanted to be in between the fine dining places and the chains,” Troy says. “We fill that gap. It took time to find the right mix of food, but we’ve hit that sweet spot as well.” The menu of The Twisted Cork changes regularly – a few times a year – but there is always something from each classic protein group (steak, chicken, rack of lamb, salmon, even slow roasted prime rib on Fridays and Saturdays) but there is often an item or two that deliver a taste of the unexpected. Recent features included a rabbit stew and the ongoing bison pot pie. “We want to offer what our customers expect, plus a few things they wouldn’t,” he adds. “We put our own twist on things so that there is always something new to look forward to.”

for smaller weddings, entertainment nights and other activities. Bookings can include AV equipment and a range of packages are available to fit any budget. Friday and Saturday nights at The Twisted Cork are a high-energy time this restaurant strives to deliver. “You can feel the energy,” Troy notes. “People can enjoy an intimate dinner but be part of a great vibe throughout the building.” Being involved in the community is another important factor of the business for Troy. The free turkey Christmas dinner hosted each year for those who may be homeless or without the ability to enjoy a festive meal is one of the ways the Twisted Cork has been able to give back. It’s something they’ve done since opening and have had up to 200 guests join them for the meal. “It’s the way I think you should spend Christmas,” he says. “It’s pretty impressive, we almost have too many volunteers now.” Casual fine dining, a twist on classic tastes and a great environment all come together at The Twisted Cork Restaurant.

“We put our own twist on things so that there is always something new to look forward to.” Troy McKenzie

With a tapas menu, there is also something for every size appetite. Cheese boards, chicken fingers and pub-style snacks add to the offerings Troy and Chris put together. The staff at The Twisted Cork are a big part of the experience as well. Each individual is hired for their customer service ability, knowing that they are key to delivering a great lunch or dinner. “We have a philosophy about ensuring our customers’ time here is the best it possibly can be,” Troy says. “That means our staff have to be the best they can be. They need to listen, know the food and drinks and be able to enjoy the time they are serving.” Included in the rustic, but finished English pubstyle restaurant is an 85 seat banquet room ideal
