Williams leads Lady Bears past Jefferson, 7-6

Murphy Williams led the Gladewater Lady Bears to a come-from-behind 7-6 victory over the Jefferson Lady Dawgs last Tuesday. Williams, the granddaughter of the late Jack V. Murphy, a former Gladewater AD and head football coach, went 3 for 4 at the plate scoring two runs and collected her fifth win in the pitcher’s circle notching nine strikeouts. Williams and the Lady Bears overcame a shaky start which allowed Jefferson to score four runs in the first inning on two hits. In the bottom of the inning, Williams led off with a single and scored on Kiley Wragg’s double. A single by Miranda Reid plated Wragg made the score 4-2. Jefferson scored two runs in the top of the second inning and Gladewater responded

with two runs of their own. Williams singled, Wragg reached base on an error and Reid delivered with an RBI single. Michaela Reid reached base on a fielder’s choice that also plated her sister to make the score 6-4. Williams and the Lady Bear defense shut-out the Lady Dawgs allowing only one hit for the rest of the game. In the bottom of the fourth, Wragg got on base with a single and Michaela Reid reached base on a hit-by-pitch. Caitlyn Mackey’s single plated Wragg and Reid to tie the score 6-6. Mackey scored the winning run on McKensie Pettit’s RBI single which proved to be the game winning hit.

Emory-Rains rallies to beat Bears, 4-3

The Gladewater Bears

Sports Roundup Ellis Hayden baseball team will open District 16-4A competition on Friday night when they host the Kilgore Bulldogs. The Bears are 1-5 on the season with seven rain-outs on their non-district schedule. The Bears hope the weather allows them to get their last nondistrict game in on Tuesday night against Canton. Despite taking a 2-0 first inning lead on Emory-Raines, the Bears couldn’t stop a late rally by the Wildcats who escaped with a 4-3 win. Cameron Callaway drew a lead-off walk and advanced

to third on Blake Guthrie’s line drive single to centerfield. Josh Huffman grounded out to the shortstop but it advanced Guthrie to second and drove in Callaway for the Bear’s first run. A passed ball by the catcher enabled Guthrie to advance to third base. When Keylon Mack launched a sacrifice fly ball to the outfield, Guthrie tagged up and came home to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. Brian Vickers took the mound for Bears and pitched lights out. In 3 2/3 innings of work, Vickers gave up 2 hits, no runs and walked two while striking out four. The Bears carried a 2-0 lead into the bottom of fourth inning, and got two quick outs. Then Rains capitalized on two hits and back to back Bear fielding errors that quickly made it 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, Vickers drew a lead-off walk and scored on Josh Huffman’s double to right field to tie the score at 3-3. In the bottom half of the fifth, the Bears committed three throwing and fielding errors in a row that allowed a Rain’s baserunner to circle the bases and score the go ahead run. Jace Armstrong shut down the Rain’s bats the rest of the way. In the top of the seventh, Jared Gipson drew a lead-off walk. Advanced to second on a fielders’ choice and stole third base with two outs. With the tying run on third, Blake Guthrie hit a hard ground ball up the middle which was snagged by the pitcher who threw him out at first to end the game. The Bears scheduled game against Jefferson on Friday

was rained-out. Union Grove Splits in District Games Last Week The Union Grove Lions lost 4-3 to undefeated Harleton last Tuesday evening.
