Gladewater Bears dominate West Rusk Relays

The Gladewater varsity and junior varsity boys track teams dominated the West Rusk Relays. The varsity team posted 135 points to win the team championship. The junior varsity team collected 171 points to win the JV team championship. The Gladewater girls posted a respectable 35 points to earn 6th place. Competing in the meet were teams from Arp, Beckville, Leverette’s Chapel, Ore City, Overton, Sabine, Troup, West Rusk and White Oak. Canton comeback downs Bears, 9-8

The Gladewater Bears led by four runs in the fifth inning, but Canton put together a furious comeback to steal the victory in the 9-8, on last Tuesday at Gladewater. The Eagles scored two runs in the sixth and four runs in the seventh to take a 9-7 lead. Blake Guthrie singled and scored on Keylon Mack’s line drive to left field to narrow the lead to 9-8. But Mack, who went 2 for 3 on the night was stranded on second base on the last out of the game.

Josh Huffman who came in relief in the top of the sixth inning was charged with the loss. He walked two, struck out two, and allowed four runs. Canton jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Bears answered with four runs in bottom of the inning. With two outs, the Bears had the based loaded for C. J. Jones who hit a hard ground ball that set off a series of Canton errors that allowed Huffman, Mack and Daniel Robertson to score. Jones advanced to second on Jace Armstrong’s single and scored on Braiden Vickers’ RBI single to make it 4-1. Canton brought home one run in the second inning, and matched that run total in the fourth. It didn’t take long for the Bears to respond as they scored three runs of their own in the fourth. Gladewater scored on a walk by Jace Armstrong and a two RBI single by Jaryd Gipson.

Kilgore blasts Bears in Dist. 16-4A opener

The Gladewater Bears dropped a 15-1 decision to Kilgore Bulldogs in their District 16-2A opener at Gladewater on Friday evening. Kilgore’s Daughdrill got it done on the hill and the plate on the way to a win. He allowed one run over five innings, striking out six , walking two and giving up only two hits. At the plate, Daughdrill went 4-4 and scored three runs. The Bulldog’s Shelton did the most damage going 3 for 3 including a double and a grand slam homerun with 7 RBI. Blake Guthrie took the loss for the Gladewater Bears Varsity. He allowed 12 runs in four innings, walked two and struck out one. Kilgore went up for good in the first, scoring eight runs on two errors, a home run by Shelton, a groundout by

Sports Roundup Ellis Hayden Dent, and an RBI single by Daughdrill. The Gladewater Bears Varsity managed to score one run in the fourth inning. Keylon Mack doubled and scored on a steal of home.

Bullard defeats Lady Bears in loop opener

With five runs in the second inning and six runs in the third, the Bullard Lady Panthers took a commanding 11-0 lead on their way to a 13-3 win in their first District 164A contest. The Lady Bears scattered 11 hits, but managed only 3 runs against Bullard’s defense and pitcher, Kyndal Clayton. Clayton pitched a complete game allowing 3 runs with 3 strikeouts and no walks. Kaitlyn Mackey went 3 for 4 collecting 2 singles and a double with an RBI and run scored. Miranda Reid went 3 for 4 and Quinlin Nugget went 2 for 3 with a run scored. Kaitlyn Tant had a single and a double. Michaela Reid had a single and scored a run. The Lady Panthers capitalized on Gladewater miscues and strung together hits that plated baserunners. Bullard catcher, Zoe Hancock went 3 for 5 with two singles and double, scored 2 runs and had 5 RBI. Tori Sexton took the loss for Lady Bears.

Union Grove Lions pounce on Union Hill

Union Grove pounced on Union Hill early and coasted to 13-3 win in Tuesday’s District 19-2A matchup at the Lions’ Field. The Lions scored 12 runs in the first three innings, leaving no doubt

An RBI single by Coleson Klein, an RBI single by Trevor Nations, an RBI single by Ethan Tillery, a home run by Triston Adkins, and a two-run double by Klein in the first inning fueled Union Grove Lions’ offense early with a nine run outburst. The Lions built upon its lead with three runs in the third. A clutch passed ball scored Adkins to open the scoring in the frame. Hunter Gray followed that up with a single that plated Klein. Union Grove tacked on another run in the fifth inning as Chase Day singled bringing home Parker Thornton. Adkins racked up four RBIs on two hits with a double and a grand slam homerun for Union Grove Lions. Klein did some damage going 2 for 3 with 3 RBI and scored 2 runs. Tristen Thompson got the win for Union Grove. He allowed one run over two innings. Thompson struck out none, walked three and gave up no hits. Ryan Griffith was the game’s losing pitcher. He allowed 12 runs in 2 2/3 innings, walked none and struck out three.

Lions falter against Overton Mustangs

With two outs and trailing Union Grove 5-4, the Overton Mustangs had runners on first and second in the bottom of seventh inning. A Union Grove error on a line drive into centerfield allowed Overton to slip away with a 6-5 victory before their fans last Friday afternoon. Union Grove jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Hayden Gray started it off with a single, then, his brother Hayden doubled that plated Parker Thornton. Coleson Klein scored on a RBI single by Trevor Nations and Gray scored on a groundout by Chase Day. Overton answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. An RBI double by Gray scored Rans Mullins in the second inning. Overton responded with a run of their own in

the second inning to tie the score. In the top of the third inning, Nations doubled to left field and scored on Chase Day’s single to put Union Grove ahead, 5-4. The score remained the same until the seventh inning. Nations paced the Lions at the plate. He went 3-4 and drove in one run and scored another. Klein was charged with the loss. He allowed six runs in 6 2/3 innings and struck out six. The Lions are 5-3 on the season and 3-2 in District 192A competition.

No. 2 Beckville shuts out Union Grove

The Beckville Lady Bearcats flexed their Class 2A #2 ranking by shutting out the Union Grove Lady Lions with a 12-0 win in Friday’s district contest at Lady Lions Field. The Lady Lions came into the game with a 5-1 district record, but the Daniels trio led the way to Beckville’s tenth victory and 7-0 district record. The bat of Jayce Daniels produced a homerun and five RBI and her sister, Jordyn Daniels had two hits and scored three runs. Beckville scored four runs in the first, three runs in the second and five runs in the third inning. The Lady Lions threatened in the fourth inning, but their only scoring opportunity was thrown out at home plate. Union Grove’s Kassidy Kruse, who was 5-1in the pitching circle on the season, took the loss.

UG Girls finish third at Grand Saline Track Meet The Union Grove girls track team took third place in the Grand Saline Invitational Track Meet on Saturday. The girls team collected 107 points. Summer Grubbs earned four first place medals and broke two Union Grove records at the meet. Grubbs broke her own record as well as the school record with a time of 12:48.77 in the 3200 meter run. She also set a new school record with a long jump of 16’ 11/2”. Grubbs claimed first place in the 800meter run with a time of 2:34 and was a member of the 4 X 400 relay which ran a time of 4:25. UG Jr. High girls compete at West Rusk Track Meet The Union Grove Junior High girls track teams competed in the West Rusk Track Meet, last week. The 7th grade girls finished 5th with 73 teams.
