Pre-Trip Planning

It is important to familiarise yourself with the road and weather conditions and what facilities and amenities are available on the route you plan to take (especially drinking water). If possible, travel with another vehicle if you are going to remote places. If you are unsure, obtain more information from one of the organisations listed in the Links and Contacts section below.

Rain and other events including bush fires, construction works, flooding and erosion can affect road conditions making some roads impassable during certain times of the year. In addition, some sections of National Parks are closed for short periods of time for park management purposes. Please enquire about the condition of the route you plan to take before travelling. Information on road conditions is available from: parks.des.qld.gov.au | Phone: 137468 www.131940.qld.gov.au www.gladstone.qld.gov.au www.racq.com.au

Equipment All of the 4WD routes involve long distances from services and amenities. It is recommended that travellers bring: • Maps and guidebooks. • An adequate vehicle recovery kit for the type of terrain you are likely to encounter. • Tyre pressure gauge and a pump to reinflate tyres. • First-aid kit. • A mobile phone or other communication equipment. • Adequate drinking water. • Sufficient fuel (and be aware of where you can refuel). Finally, leave trip details with someone so that they can contact Police Search and Rescue if your party is overdue. Make sure you notify this person when you return.

Track Condition As a general guide, all four routes require a moderate level of 4WD skill and experience. The routes are suitable for medium clearance vehicles with dual range. The majority of routes are on sealed or well-formed unsealed roads with minor gradients. All routes include tracks with some steep and/or rocky/ slippery/sandy sections, and several shallow water crossings. Previous 4WD experience or training is recommended. Some tracks can become extremely slippery after rain, and more difficult to negotiate safely and there is also a potential for track closures.

Gladstone to Kroombit Tops Highlights

Agnes Water / 1770 to Kroombit Tops – Highlights

The Boyne Valley has been home to the Glassford Creek Copper & Gold Smelter sites since first discovered in 1893 as a significant part of the European settlement. As a well-known historical asset, the now heritage-listed site was originally mined for silver, followed by copper. You will find the Glassford Creek Copper & Smelter Site off Many Peaks Road in Many Peaks.

• Relax in the pristine parklands at East Shores Precinct or the Marina. • Step back in time and relive the history of Calliope at the Historical Village. • Stock up on local produce and handmade homewares at the Calliope local markets. • Slip into the cool waters for a relaxing dip, leisurely kayak or try your hand at stand-up paddle boarding at Lake Awoonga. • Stay at Boynedale Bush Camp or the Boyne Valley Community Discovery Centre. • Enjoy lunch at Many Peaks Pub or Kirstens Cottage, Boyne Valley.

• Spend the day at Agnes Water Main Beach or explore the calm waterways at the Town of 1770. • Browse the many food and handicraft stalls at the Discovery Coast Markets, held on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. • Call past the Miriam Vale Café for all your local information and try one of their homemade pies. • Visit the newly developed Alf Larson/Lions Park and enjoy all the facilities on offer. • Stop by Mungungo Pub for a good oldfashioned meal and great hospitality.

Camping in Kroombit Tops National Park

Three camping areas are provided: • Griffiths Creek camping area—accessible by conventional vehicle in dry conditions only • The Razorback camping area—accessible by four-wheel-drive. Since camping permits are required and fees apply, please call, click or visit the Gladstone or Agnes Water Visitor Information Centre to make the permit booking. Alternatively you can go onto parks.des.qld.gov.au to make your booking. Note: A tag with your booking number must be displayed at your camp site.

Protecting the National Park

Please help protect Kroombit Tops National Park by following these guidelines. • Use a portable stove to reduce fire danger and eliminate the need for firewood. • Bring your own clean, milled timber for firewood. Collecting wood in national parks is prohibited. • Use fire-rings only for campfires. They have been placed so they are clear of surrounding vegetation. • Avoid contaminating water. Wash yourself and your cooking utensils at least 50m away from waterways. • Bury all toilet waste (and paper) 20cm deep and at least 100m from waterways, tracks and camp sites. Preferably bring a portable toilet to minimise pollution in this area—dispose of toilet waste appropriately. • Take all rubbish home. There are no rubbish bins in the park. Never burn or bury it. • Avoid feeding native animals as our foods can be harmful to them and you might be bitten or scratched. • Check and clean mud and seeds from your shoes, tyres and tents before and after entering parks to help prevent the spread of weeds and the deadly chytrid fungus that kills frogs. • Leave Kroombit Tops as you found it. Everything in the park, including all parts of the WWII bomber wreckage, is protected.

Responsible Touring The two routes in this 4WD brochure include some remote and beautiful natural locations. Being able to access these special areas comes with responsibilities—please look after these places and leave them as you found them for others to enjoy.

Road rules

• Normal road rules apply to driving on all roads in this brochure, including in national parks, conservation parks and forests. • Access to some roads in parks and forests is restricted. Restricted access roads are indicated by signs and road users must comply with any requirements specified on the signs. • All standard give-way rules apply. Most of the roads carry two-way traffic, however, some are narrow. On one-way sections of road, give right of way as signed or to large vehicles, vehicles travelling downhill or vehicles towing trailers. Watch out for wildlife, pedestrians and other road users. • Drive slowly to allow time to react to sudden or unexpected problems. • Keep an eye out for wildlife on or near the road, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. • Expect to share some roads with pedestrians and other vehicles, including small tour buses. • Watch out for, and give way to, walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

Take extra care during and after wet weather

• Watch out for washouts, scoured road shoulders and loose surfaces. • Be especially careful in wet weather. Some roads become impassable, even to 4WD vehicles.

Drive responsibly

• Be prepared for difficulties that could be encountered in remote areas and in rough terrain. • Make sure all passengers wear seatbelts at all times and stay inside the vehicle. • Keep left, especially at sharp bends and crests. • Pull to the side to let other traffic pass but do not damage vegetation or create new tracks. • Wash your vehicle thoroughly before and after trips to prevent the spread of weeds. • Keep the environment clean. Carry your rubbish out. • Slow down for oncoming vehicles, especially those with dust clouds. • Leave all gates as you found them and avoid disturbing stock. • Slow down to cross creeks. Walk across first to check the depth. Never stop mid-stream. • Show extra courtesy with inexperienced drivers.

Communication

Call Triple Zero (000) in an emergency or try 112 if this fails. There is mobile phone reception at the Kroombit Tops Lookout (other coverage points in the park are clearly marked with telephone signal signs). You can also call for assistance on UHF emergency channel 5, which is monitored by emergency authorities.
