Seniors Week 2014 Saturday 16th to Sunday 24th August

Bookings are essential for all activities and events except where stated in the program.

Bookings commence Monday 4th August and can be made by phoning 4976 6306 or 1300 733 343 for the cost of a local phone call and ask to be put through to the Seniors Week Bookings. All events and workshops are Free unless otherwise stated. Some activities require participants to bring their own materials. Disclaimer: In the event of insufficient bookings some events may be cancelled. Adverse weather conditions may result in activities being cancelled or postponed. In either event every effort will be made to contact booked participants.

Saturday 16th August Men’s Shed Open Day 23 Off Lane, Gladstone 9am - 12noon Provides an opportunity for residents to view the Gladstone Men’s Shed well-equipped workshop, items the shed is producing and wood and metal work demonstrations. Also includes presentations on Prostate Cancer and Arthritis, complimentary tea/ coffee and a free sausage sizzle. On street parking only. Bookings for catering purposes.

Belly Dancing Agnes Water Meeting Room (Old community Centre) Springs Road, Agnes Water 10am - 11am Have fun while being instructed in Belly Dance movements including veil work, and learn enough to put on a small performance. Classes are designed to be fun and enjoyable and cater to all women of all sizes, shapes, and fitness levels.

Bushwalk 8.30am - 11.30pm Meet at the stage area in Bray Park, Wyndham Avenue, Boyne Island. Fit beginners are welcome for an 8km walk, mainly on track and beach but some bush with moderate hills. Walking part of the Turtle Way, Boyne River estuary and beach, climbing a hill, through bush to view the grave of William Wyndham, a local pioneer and visiting the Lilly Pond on Lillies Hills. Bring day-pack with water and snack, good covered walking shoes/joggers/boots,optional camera, binoculars and walking stick. Led by local experienced bushwalkers.

SBS Movie Show

One of the finest ensemble casts ever brought together for an Australian film. When a car of lady bowlers flips over on the way home from a tournament confusion escalates, no one knows who was in the car, how bad it was or even where it was. Husbands go in all directions in search of their wives; helpful passers-by take the women involved in the accident in other directions; the ambulance gets lost; and the local policeman misses the accident altogether! “A breath of fresh air.....might be the best day trip you’ve had in the cinema for a good while” - Leigh Paatsch (1996)

Saturday 16th August Heritage Walk Old Gladstone Cemetery, Dawson Highway, Gladstone 10.30 - 12noon Meet Dawson Highway end of Cemetery Road The Gladstone Genealogical Society will take participants on a walking tour of the Old Gladstone Cemetery, providing participants with information on graves of historical significance and the people that played an important role in Gladstone’s history. Bring water bottle and snack and wear good covered walking shoes/joggers/boots. Morning tea provided on arrival. Park along Cemetery Rd between the cemetery and racecourse.

Saturday 16th August (cont) Clay Creations New Community Centre Springs Road, Agnes Water 1pm - 3.30pm Dry Air Clay workshop with artist Denise Wild. Using basic principles of sculpting and modelling with air dry, no bake, and self hardening clay to design and create miniature sculptures to take home.

Mind, Body and Soul Community Centre Roe Street, Miriam Vale 1pm - 2.30pm Adam Hansen from Blue Mantis Solutions will teach you how to move your body effectively, more efficient ways to breathe and methods to improve your personal safety. Bring an open mind and water. Wear comfortable clothes.

Saturday 16th August (cont) Indian Cooking & Culture Senior Citizens Centre 83 Oaka Lane, Gladstone 2 - 3.30pm Learn how to cook traditional Indian dishes including vegetarian meals. All ingredients supplied. Please wear closed in footwear and a long sleeved garment. Henna art and dance demonstration included.

Spanish (Flamenco) Dancing Senior Citizens Centre 83 Oaka Lane, Gladstone 6 - 7.30pm Learn the dance that has become one of the most popular dance styles in the world. Traditionally, the older the Flamenco dancer, the closer they get to the perfect dance style. Wear comfortable clothes & shoes. Bring a bottle of water. Suitable for people with moderate fitness level/mobility.

Sunday 17th August

Canoeing Boynedale Bush Camp, Monto Road, Boyne Valley 10am -12 noon Meet at the Boynedale boat ramp 30km past Calliope. Explore beautiful Lake Awoonga by canoe led by qualified canoe instructors from the Boyne Valley Canoe Club. Billy tea, damper and biscuits supplied, bring your own cup.

Classes are designed to be fun and enjoyable and cater to all women of all sizes, shapes, and fitness levels.

Spanish Cooking Senior Citizens Centre 83 Oaka Lane, Gladstone 2.30 - 4pm One of WIN’s Spanish members will teach you the techniques and secrets to making authentic Spanish dishes such as Paella and Tortilla Espangola. All ingredients supplied. Please wear closed in footwear and a long sleeved garment.

Sunday 17th August (cont) Young at Art Acrylic Painting Workshop Agnes Water Meeting Room, (Old Community Centre)

Springs Road, Agnes Water 9am - 12 noon Customised to suit everyone’s capabilities using landscapes or wildlife photos and/or postcards of the Discovery Coast Region. Participants will explore acrylic as a medium and create a postcard on an A3 canvas. Session includes composition, colour, perspective,observation skills, creating light and shadows and having fun! Bring Acrylic Paints, Brushes and an Apron. (Paints and brushes are available for purchase at the Agnes Water Newsagency at a low cost. Canvas supplied.

Sunday 17th August (cont) Young at Art Mount Larcom Room Boyne Tannum Community Centre, Wyndham Ave, Boyne Island 9.15am - 12.15pm Artist Janie Peterson will guide the group through the different stages of painting a still life including sketching, mixing colours and applying the colours onto the canvas, building up layers of paint to create a fore-, middle-, and background. Bring Acrylic Paints, Brushes and an Apron. (Paints and brushes are available for purchase at a variety of discount shops at a low cost.) Canvas supplied.

Monday 18th August (cont) Tranquillity Walk Meet at Fitness Stations at the beginning of the Tranquillity Walk, Lions Park, Miriam Vale 10am - 11.30am Just over 2km long the walk winds through bush land to the old cemetery in Miriam Vale and back. A great way to reach your daily 1000 steps. Conclude the walk with a healthy homemade morning tea. Lead by the DCCHS team.

Drumming Heron Room, Boyne Tannum Community Centre, Wyndham Avenue, Boyne Island 10 - 11am Drumming circles for seniors are rapidly spreading world wide. Not only is drumming fun, but it improves circulation in the hands and body, loosens stiff joints in the shoulders, arms and wrists, and stimulates the mind. Facilitated by students of Toolooa State High.

Monday 18th August (cont) Harmony Farm Boyne Valley 10am - 12 noon Harmony farm is 7.5km past Ubobo, turn right over the railway line at Littlemore, proceed along Rushbrook Rd for about 3.5km to Prizemans Rd on the left and then 5km to the farm. View the farm, guided walk exploring the flora and fauna, horse rides for the adventurous - all within the setting of the beautiful Boyne Valley. Damper and billy tea supplied.

Health and Wellbeing Morning Tea Gladstone Golf Club, off Sun Valley Road, Gladstone 10 - 11.30am Facilitated by the GP Superclinic this activity aims to be both fun and informative with a presentation on health assessments, access to allied health professionals, lots of give-aways and a free morning tea where you can socialise with other participants.

Monday 18th August (cont) Gardening - Bonsai’s Bunnings Warehouse, Dawson Highway, Gladstone Meet in the D.I.Y Workshop. 10am - 12 noon Be instructed on the art of growing Bonsai. Participants will receive a small bonsai suitable plant to take home and plant in your own pot. Workshop is followed by a late morning tea. A second class will be made available on Tuesday 18th August depending on interest.

Monday 18th August (cont) Captain Cook Memorial to 1770 Headland Trail Walk. Meet at the Captain Cook Monument, 1770 2 - 3.30pm This new walk follows the picturesque 1770 Bay (Round Hill Creek) up to the 1770 Headland, dipping through small patches of rainforest and winding along the coastline. This guided walk is just over 3km and concludes with a healthy homemade afternoon tea. Lead by the DCCHS team.

Mayor's Southern Seniors Week Afternoon Tea Community Centre, Roe Street, Miriam Vale 2 - 4pm Come and join Mayor Gail Sellers and Gladstone Regional Councillors at a special afternoon tea to celebrate 2014 Seniors Week and the amazing contribution people 55+ have made to the Gladstone Region past and the present. Come alone, as a couple or bring your friends to enjoy an afternoon of good food and good company!

9.30 - 11.30am 2 - 4pm Neil Rooney, Fitness Instructor will provide personalised tours of the PCYC Gym and instruction on how to use individual pieces of equipment whilst local Body building Champion and senior identity Mac Hosking will pop in to provide additional inspiration on how regular visits to the PCYC Gym can increase your energy, confidence, posture, flexibility, mental health, physical strength and more!

Tuesday 19th August (cont) 50+ Fit & Fabulous PCYC Gym, Gladstone Police Citizens Youth Club Yarroon Street, Gladstone Two sessions available

9.30 - 10.30am or 10.30 - 11.30 PCYC Fitness Instructor Neil Rooney will provide Senior Fit Class’ participants with an aerobic workout which targets all the major muscle groups - gently! Group exercise is not only a great way to get fit and stay motivated it also provides the opportunity to meet new friends!

The track will take you from lookout number 2 to Ironbark Gully where you will enjoy smoko and return. Bring day-pack with water and snack and wear good covered walking shoes/joggers/ boots(no thongs, sandals or slide),optional camera, binoculars and walking stick. Led by local experienced bushwalkers.

Thursday 21st August (cont) Port Curtis Day Respite Fair 36 Rosella Street, Gladstone 9.30am - 1.30pm Port Curtis Day Respite Open Day/ Fete targets frail, aged and people with disability and their carers, but is open to the whole community so they may observe what the Port Curtis Day Respite Centre has to offer service users. A variety of crafts and activities will be available for anyone who would like to join in, stalls with craft items made by clients on sale, stalls with homemade treats, sausage sizzle for $2 each and cold and hot drinks on sale for $1. Bookings not required.

Creative Clay Potters Place, 37 Dawson Road, Gladstone 9.30am - 12 noon Paint a pre-made bowl or mug, make a vase with clay or use the wheel and make a thrown pot. Items will be glazed and fired to be picked up at a later date.

Tondoon Botanic Gardens Glenlyon Road, Gladstone 9.30am - 11am Meet in the courtyard in front of the Visitor Information Office. Enjoy a walking tour of the gardens followed by Morning Tea at the cafe. Wear closed shoes, hat and sunglasses. Presented by Gladstone Regional Council, Botanic Garden’s Visitor Information services.

Raise your heart-rate within your safe thresholds, and learn how mobility and relevant strength will keep your energy levels and positivity up, and make you look and feel younger. A pre-excercise Safety Questionnaire must be completed before the session.

Thursday 21st August (cont) Our Priceless Past Gladstone Region Art Gallery and Museum Corner Goondoon and Bramston Streets Gladstone 9.30 - 11.30am Seniors 70 years and over who have lived in the area for more than 30 years will be interviewed during Seniors Week by Chanel College’ students to enable them to prepare stories on our local seniors to be included in an Observer special lift-out publication. Whilst the Seniors Week ‘Our Priceless Past’ event is only for nominated seniors the official opening and launch of the resulting publication along with an exhibition of the stories, memorabilia and photographs will occur on the 7th October and is open to the wider community.

Friday 22nd August Herbs for Health Agnes Water Meeting Room (old community centre) Springs Road, Agnes Water 9 - 10am Nicoli Freebairn, author of ‘What Heals … Naturally’ will facilitate a Question & Answer Session on alternative and holistic health using a natural resources and remedies - herbs. Includes herbal tea and a light snack.

Not So Naughty Chocolate New Community Centre Springs Road, Agnes Water 11am - 1pm Chef Sam Organ will teach you how to make chocolate from scratch using natural ingredients and learn about the differences between cocoa and cacao. Make a chocolate bar to take home and taste a delicious medicinal hot chocolate.

Learn to Swim Indoor Heated Pool. Gladstone Aquatic Centre, Tank Street, Gladstone 1 - 1.45pm Gladstone Gropers Masters Swimming Club’s coaches will teach beginners how to swim. Basic level of fitness required. Bring towel, swimmers and goggles (can be purchased at the kiosk if participants don’t have them). A further class is available from 2 - 2.45 if sufficient numbers warrant.

Drawing Agnes Water Meeting Room (old community centre) Springs Road, Agnes Water 10am - 1pm This workshop lead by artist Marci Russo will introduce participants to a quick and easy way to create complex drawings. This transfer/ trace technique can be used as the first step in creating a drawing in any size, using any medium, and also to create water colour or oil paintings. Each participant will take home either a completed pencil drawing (5x7inches) and the skills needed to complete their own work.

Suitable for men and women, large or small, strong or weak, young or old! Wear loose clothing and bring a water bottle.

Rock n Roll BITS Golf Club, Jacaranda Drive Boyne Island 7 - 10.30pm Entertainment by Billy Guy a sensational performer with a wide repertoire including easy listening, 50’s and 60’s popular hits and rock n roll. Saturday 23rd August (cont) Music in the Park - It’s on for Young and Old Tannum Blue Park, Corner Tannum Sands & Dahl Roads, Tannum Sands 1 - 4pm Infectious beats you can’t shake, toe tapping rhythms, honest song writing and vocals that fill your heart with warmth; those are what you are getting delivered to your soul from Aussie instrumentalist artist Matthew Barker by way of his solo project, The Bucketseats. Sunday 24th August Organic Growing Tannum Sands 9am - 12noon The Gladstone Organic Group will host an Open Day at the property of one of their members in Tannum Sands (Address will be supplied upon booking). Activity will give participants ideas on how to successfully grow their own food and entails a guided walk through the garden, information on growing organic fruit and vegetables, composting, improving soil quality etc. Morning Tea provided. Please utilise on street parking, for wheelchair uses or for people with poor mobility parking is available near the house.

Sunday 24th August (cont) Tai Chi Qigong Japenese Tea House, Tondoon Gardens, Glenlyon Road, Gladstone 11am - 12noon or Bray Park, Wyndham Avenue, Boyne Island 9 -10am Qigong is an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques and focused intention. The slow gentle movements of most Qigong forms can be easily adapted, even for the physically challenged and can be practiced by all age groups. The gentle, rhythmic movements of Qigong reduce stress, build stamina, increase vitality, and enhance the immune system. It has also been found to improve cardiovascular, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic and digestive functions. Qigong’s great appeal is that everyone can benefit, regardless of ability, age, belief system or life circumstances.
