Winter Collection 21 November – 21 December 2018 Dear Friends, This year has been a particularly poignant one; a year of celebration of the past and excitement for what the future will bring. January marked my 50th year at Gladwell’s and I would like to sincerely thank all of our clients who have supported the gallery during this time. I have enjoyed innumerable conversations and firm friendships formed through a love and appreciation for our paintings. No picture conveys the same feeling for each of us because of our varied tastes and preferences, so the field is wide open for artists to capture their own choice of subjects and style. Therefore, in simple terms, if a fine painting has an emotional effect for the good on one, then it has to be considered as something which you can enjoy. Johannes Vermeer’s The Milkmaid reduces me to tears every time I am lucky enough to visit The Netherlands. Gladwell & Patterson has for 266 years been offering our valued clients the finest art by the leading artists of their respective periods. Our opinion is based on our generational experience as art dealers and also on the academies and museums who award the artists with accolades and honours by including examples of their work in their National Museums. Artists such as Alexandre Louis Jacob, Georges Charles Robin, and my great friend Robert Chailloux all received honours from their National Institutions to back up our own judgement of their quality. I very much hope you will enjoy our latest acquisitions of these fine artists’ work within this collection of paintings. Our talented contemporary artists stand alongside these masters of yesteryear. Ranging from the delicately depicted floral still lifes of Pieter Wagemans to the marvellous marine battle scenes by Ronny Moortgat, our Belgian friends continue to surprise and delight. The British landscapes of Martin Taylor and London cityscapes of Peter van Breda call to mind the beauty of this fair Isle and will, we hope, entice those of you that live further afield to visit us very soon. The new year brings us an exciting array of exhibitions at Beauchamp Place as well as our overseas sojourns at Palm Beach and in Asia. We are delighted to announce that we will be exhibiting a David Shepherd retrospective, The Art of Survival, in January 2019, in association with the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation to support their highly effective conservation projects in Africa and Asia. We welcome in the Spring with Paul S. Brown MMXIX, an exhibition showcasing Paul’s exquisite new works, which promises to be a delight for the senses. We hope that you enjoy the fine paintings and bronze sculptures within this collection and we look forward to welcoming you to the gallery this festive season. Warmest regards, Anthony Fuller

“My father started dealing with Charles Perron after the Second World War and up to the artist’s sudden passing in 1958. In 1987 I met Perron’s daughter at an auction in Brittany; Madame Perron took me back to her father’s studio where his palette lay on the floor beside the easel, exactly where he put it on the day he died nearly thirty years earlier. This meeting renewed Gladwell’s relationship with the Perron family. I learnt that when the war began, the artist buried all of his paintings in his garden and moved to Brittany, where his subject matter expanded with the change of scenery. On the cessation of war Perron returned to his studio, dug up his pictures and resumed his career. The many accolades awarded him by the Art Institutes of France during his life confirm his status as one of the leading artists of his time.” - Anthony Fuller

“On a post-war visit to Paris my father discovered the artistic talents of Georges Charles Robin - the same visit on which he came across the work of Alexandre Louis Jacob. Being in his fifties, Robin had already established himself as one of the foremost French artists of the day; he continued to go to from strength to strength, culminating in the award of the Medaille d’Honneur by the Société des Artistes Français. Sadly in his late seventies Robin lost his sight, but he continued to release examples of his earlier work to Gladwell & Co until shortly before he died in his one-hundredth year. His tonal values and his positioning of pure colours side by side on the canvas, each slightly altering the appearance of the other, remain his lasting legacy to future generations of artists. The numerous French museums who have examples of Robin’s landscapes in their collection are fortunate indeed. Robin was just the nicest man to deal with.” - Anthony Fuller

The son of a lace designer, Pierre-Eugène Montézin was apprenticed to a decorative workshop at a young age to learn the art of executing murals. In 1903 he met the French Impressionist Ernest Quost who encouraged Montézin to concentrate on drawing and painting en plein air and to study the theories of Impressionism. Montézin was most strongly influenced by the work of Claude Monet; after the First World War he spent a year in the countryside around Dreux and Moret, capturing the favoured scenery of other notable Impressionists such as Alfred Sisley. Throughout his career, Montézin maintained an Impressionistic style, but sought a greater freedom of expression in his use of colour and application of paint, marking him out among the most influential Post-Impressionist artists of his generation. Montézin first exhibited at at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1903, and was subsequently awarded numerous accolades. In 1932 he was awarded the Medaille d’Honneur by the Société des Artistes Français, the first landscape painter given this prestigious award in thirty years, and the following year he was elected the president of the Salon Jury.

"My father joined Gladwell & Co in the late 1920s and it was at this time that the gallery held the very first British exhibition of Auguste Bouvard’s work at 68 Queen Victoria Street in the City. My father continued to acquire paintings from this fine artist until Bouvard died in 1956. During the early part of his career Auguste Bouvard painted a variety of French subjects under several pseudonyms in order to satisfy the demand for his work, but always maintained the same easy flowing brush and palette knife strokes. His son, Antoine Bouvard, continued the family tradition of painting the waterways and monuments of Venice with the same rich colouring as his father, although in a broader and looser style. Having purchased the finest examples of both father and son’s paintings, directly from the artists themselves, we have kept a photographic archive of their work, in order that we can accurately authenticate each artist’s paintings.” - Anthony Fuller

André Hambourg’s lustrous work is characterised by an expressive, Impressionistic brush and gorgeous colouring. Most renowned for his seascapes and beach scenes, Hambourg’s long and prestigious career carried him all over the world. Born in Paris in 1909, he initially studied sculpture under Paul Niclausse before entering the studio of Lucien Simon at the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1928, aged just nineteen and in the midst of his studies, Hambourg had his debut solo exhibition at the Galerie Taureau in Paris, which was met with great acclaim. This early recognition of Hambourg’s talent ensured a membership at the Salon des Indépendants, which by now was setting the trend for twentieth-century art along with the Salon d’Automne. In 1933 he won the Prix Abd-el-Tif, resulting in nearly ten years spent working in North Africa. He was struck by the immense power of the light there and its relationship to movement and colour. During his time away, Hambourg continued to exhibit in Algeria and Paris. In 1939 Hambourg became a military reporter and draughtsman, and in 1944 went on to become a war correspondent, for which he was awarded the Croix de Guerre. Hambourg resumed his painting career in 1946 and became the official painter to the navy, allowing him the opportunity to travel. He covered almost every corner of the world, accumulating sketchbook drawings that would later become the inspirations for his vivid canvases. Luminous marines and delightful beach scenes offer a spontaneous interpretation through rapid application of expressive colours. Vast areas of sky often dominate his scenes and his canvases are imbued with a feeling of endless space and time. Hambourg’s paintings can be found in numerous museums and institutions in France and further afield, including the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris, Eugène Boudin Museum in Honfleur and at the European Courts of Justice in Luxembourg.

Jean-Baptiste Oliver was born in Marseille in 1848. Oliver’s artistic talents were evident from a young age, and at the advice of a local artist named Étienne Cornellier, he was enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts de Marseille. His skill as a draughtsman was quickly recognised, and in 1871 Oliver was awarded the first prize for life drawing. Following his studies, Oliver entered the studio of Gustave Julien and then Étienne Cornellier, with whom he travelled to Paris for the first time. In Paris, Oliver became immersed in the bohemian circle of artists and writers that lived around Montmartre and soon assisted with the painting decorations of Sacré Coeur du Montmartre and the pavilions of the World Fair of 1889. Oliver began to exhibit in the Paris Salons and received numerous awards for his vibrant and colourful landscapes, becoming a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1881, a year which marked the beginning of a long and successful artistic career. Oliver is greatly favoured for his dazzling marine paintings. He captures the sea, its shores and ports in a diffusion of bright light inspired by the intensity of the southern French sun of his childhood. His are canvases that sing the splendours of the sea. Oliver travelled extensively in France and northern Italy, but it was the particular atmospheres of Venice, Genoa and the Treport in Normandy that led to a more mature style with subtle shading and soft colouring.

“My father found Alexandre Louis Jacob exhibiting at the Paris Salon in the late 1940s and our gallery continues to acquire the best examples of his work to this very day. During this time we have been fortunate enough to acquire at least seventeen of his largest canvases, mainly still in their original reverse hand-carved French frames, and most of which won him major awards at the Paris Salon. I feel the secret of Jacob’s success was simply finding a subject matter and depicting it in delicate tones and hues, which have continued to exert universal appeal ever since. Whether it is the old man punting across the water, or the horses pulling the log cart, his refined colouring always focuses one’s eye on the central subject. Jacob’s death in 1972 aged ninety-six was a great loss to French artistic circles, but his work lives on through his ethereal landscapes.” - Anthony Fuller

“In his early career Robert Chailloux painted the French landscape and harbour scenes, but sadly he developed a very bad curvature of his spine which restricted his mobility and eventually confined him to his studio. His need to paint was so deeply entrenched that he switched to painting still lifes, for which he won many major awards. We started dealing with this superb artist in the early 1950s and continued acquiring examples of his work until his passing in 2006. In his spare time Chailloux built wonderful model ships, each one taking up to three years to complete, and every tree in his garden supported a bird box, such was his passion for his feathered friends. I attended his funeral along with just four others, but he leaves a legacy to the world that will last forever.” - Anthony Fuller
