ith a very busy and always-onthe-move schedule, Gabon born Nigerian Actor, Movie Producer, Record Label Executive, Fashion Entrepreneur and one of Nollywood’s top actors, Jim Iyke who has had a very successful career and we must add, a fair share of controversy through his 14years in the industry.

Jim Iyke

For the first time in a very long while, he agrees to an exclusive truth with the GA Team, addresses the negative comments and responds to the media and his critics. Get your cup of tea, as this will be an interesting, annoying, but quite motivating ride.

Speaking of being controversial and why it is the case, he quotes John Travolta saying “that this is the worst time to be a celebrity with the advent of social media. What we do right now with all due respect is really beyond Africa. Its not continental anymore, it has a global appeal. I represent the continent to the world. Controversy is something that finds you, you don’t find it, it is a mysterious propensity. I have a knack for speaking my mind, a knack for doing something completely out of the norm. My philosophies are different, I can’t do the conventional, I can’t be conformed, I don’t go with the band wagon, I cannot be affiliated with a group or persons or philosophy or idealism. I never go to do press on my own, the point is it finds me not because I welcome it, but because I exist in an industry where I want to benefit from without allowing the effect of the industry to rub off on me. When little is known about a person that is in the public eye, things will be created in order to fit that gap, and a lot of times they are blown out of proportion. There are bloggers that know next to nothing about journalism, they are what I like to call the ‘cut and paste journalists’, who pretty much go to your twitter timeline, crop everything on there word for word, then paste it on their blog. Everything is so easy now, and everybody is incredibly lazy, and that is sad. So, these are some of the things that give birth to a great deal of controversy when there is none. I mean what I have done that seriously is out of context that no one else has ever tried; we are human beings with all our feelings, our mistakes, short comings and weaknesses. That is what makes us unique in who we are”. – He continues… GLAMAFRICA.COM

feature cover story In recent years, the star actor has made headlines more than ever, with his viral deliverance video, reality show debut and more about his women. First it was Kentura Hamilton(and her famous press release) and then Nadia Buhari(the on-air engagement). Speaking of Kentura he says “In the heat of the whole drama between Kentura and I, people asked why I did not say a word. She released a story to the press about how I wrecked her life, I believe it was the emotions of the moment because that is not who she is and that would never define her, a lady whom I spent 6 years of my life with. She is an incredible person, incredibly beautiful, incredibly gifted, and incredibly generous with her soul, her spirit. You cannot spend 6 years with a Caribbean girl if she is not incredible. In our moments of grief and disappointments, we say things that we do not mean. Would I hold it against her? Maybe I did, but I moved on 5 minutes after, and I do not hold it against her. But she is always going to be a part of my life; my history will never be complete without her. It completely spells the measure of man that I am. I did not say one word and I still will not say one word in respect of who she is. If she is right I will leave it for people that know us to judge. They are the ones I owe my explanations too. I have often said that I don’t owe anybody any apology as to the steps and decisions I take in my life. I owe hardened fans an explanation and not an apology. People that are waiting for me to wake up and say stuff have eternity to wait. She is who she is, she said what she did. She may regret it or not, I do not know because I never asked her, all I know is that someone spent 6 years with me and come rain come shine, anytime she calls me I will readily rise to the occasion. My life will never be complete with her and she will always have a special place in my heart”. And as for his business with Nadia? “You don’t need a soothsayer to tell you nor do you need a fake prophet to spell it out to you. I am the kind of man that drops hints; I do not have to tell the whole story because it makes you lose your mystic, it makes you lose the strength of your advantage over people”. Not spilling anything but leaving the juicy part for educated minds to figure what their relationship means. Outfit SPRING BLINK BOUTIQUE

cover story With this sorted and moving on, it makes me wonder how Jim’s journey to Nollywood all started. He says “primarily it was the quest for adventure; I always knew I was not a 9-5 person. Though I tried it for a few years when I was fresh out of college, but I just knew that was not my call. The first thing that came to mind at the time was acting, I was looking up to Ramsey Noah, Saint Obi, Emeka Ike, Genevieve Nnaji and Rita Dominic, and I wanted to be a part of it, so I went in that direction. It was not orchestrated by anybody, if anything, everybody opposed and did everything to frustrate me in the wake of my quest, but I stayed steadfast and I am glad I did”. But today, Jim Iyke wears the crown for ‘Most Controversial Male Actor in Africa’, and why does he think this is the case? “I am self-expressive, my form is always fearless, I will not stop speaking my mind, I will exercise my intellect when an actor is not expected to be intelligent about anything because he’s an actor. They just expect you to look pretty and wear good clothes, shut up and say the lamest things. I will not go with a certain group or entity because they are socially relevant or because they are from an old money background. I will not be friends with colleagues that do not like me personally but want to climb on me to gain relevance. I will not kiss directors’ asses that do not know the basics of their jobs and ride

on my far knowledgeable expertise. I do not have to attend birthdays or be at events that will put me on the pages of newspapers, magazines or social media in order to become politically or socially correct. I attack social, economic and political issues, which by default, affect me directly as a person or affect people I am concerned with. I am not going to be a coward about life. I am not going to wake up rich, famous and lean without doing anything extraordinary with my life. All these are not expected of a public figure. I am going to sing this song, but I want to sing it my way and it is just that simple”.

After more than a decade being a bad boy, that viral deliverance with the famous Prophet TB Joshua which trended for weeks (if you didn’t know about that video then you must have been living in a cave) brought more than popularity for Jim but a reconnection with God. About that video and his thoughts on the public and some of his colleagues suggesting he orchestrated it in pursuit of more fame, he says “I will deem it completely reprehensible if I say what happened was orchestrated like people suggested. Segun Arinze and Charles Novia, men that I respected a lot, came out to say something completely derogatory of what happened that day. I am not really cool with Novia, we have always been

at odds with each other, and nobody asked his opinion on what happened to another actor. If you want to be relevant; direct movies and project your creativity, so people will respect you more. Do not involve yourself in people’s private issues, I don’t talk about your wife, I do not say she is overweight, nor do I talk about the fact that you need therapy. I do not talk about your personal issues though looking at you, I am sure you have enormous personal issues. I do not talk about Segun, I know one or two things about him like he knows about me. We are not that close so he has no authority to talk about what happened in my life. He used to be like a big brother, one that I respect, but he lost all that because

cover story of the way he went about this issue. I had people that shared my experience, people that were happy for me. I went there to get answers for something entirely different. There are things that happen in your life that if you don’t have the answers to, you go to a higher calling to make sense of it. When I got there, in a space of 5 - 10 minutes, something transpired and till this day I do not know what it is. They thought it was a PR gimmick that was to the gain of a synagogue church against one of Africa’s top celebrities, and they needed some sort of validity and authenticity, they believe I was used, well that is their opinion. You cannot choose your time and place with God, you do not have that authority, God chooses it. The medium with which it happened was through a man, but my focus is the architect, so let them focus on man and a make mockery of it, I do not care what they say, my focus is on God”.

How has this new found relationship with God changed Jim, his lifestyle and the people around him? “It has made me a more patient person, perhaps a kinder person. It used to be about the big group, the entourage, having heads turn around when I walk into a place, then one day I woke up and looked around and said to myself “why are you feeding these guys, why am I buying them expensive stuff when they are not doing anything in my life except stirring up trouble?”. 80% of the trouble was through my entourage, I was just a part of it. What do I need these people for, which woman would be comfortable with that group? Yes, a lot of industry women would, but the woman that is truly your woman would not be comfortable with a third party, how much more a multiple party. So, I got rid of that”. This is quite interesting. And how about that bad boy image and how it makes him a waiting prey for the media and industry at large. He scuffles “What is a bad boy?” And continues… “Is it questioning the norm or daring to be smart about what others do not want to question? Or is it being comfortable with being an existing factor that is thriving, relatively successful and by no means have individuality and a sense of personality? If that is what they call a bad boy, then I am one. I know myself, the people that matter most in my life know me and I think that is what matters most. How many people can say that what made them happy 20 years ago can still make them happy now? I know what makes me happy, it is not hanging

A case of bad boy turned good man still on the spotlight, I am still curious as to why Kentura Hamilton’s press release stated she was set up to appear as a jealous and crazy lover in a scene from his reality TV show. Could this be true? Still denying such happened.

in the club with a bunch of strangers I do not know but call colleagues, it is not what makes me happy. The strangers I make friends with on an airline that tell me about their simple needs, about family, about values, about their small growing business concerns they want me to invest in, still makes me happy. I am just tired of predictable people and I do not want to be one of them. A lot of people have come to understand that the industry expects some sacrifices, including pleasing people, and they have come to embrace it. I do not agree with that philosophy. Sometimes you must walk alone, as you walk people will follow you”.

“That is amazing. I must have set up the whole group because everybody watched it. People are trying to say I orchestrated the whole picture taking, whispering in girl’s ears and everything else that went on. That would take a whole lot of setting up. Everything that transpired there is enough to give a woman grounds to be upset, and she was. Did I tell her to play it up? I don’t think so. We all saw a friend of mine take a fall from a convertible and nearly break his neck; I would not put a friend in danger like that. My show is called ‘unscripted’, it will always be called Unscripted”. So is this the case of the media or what is described as ‘New Media’ blowing things out of proportion and the public taking things personal? “Oh Yes! They are bloggers that cannot feed themselves, and then all of a sudden someone informs them that with a few hits, money would be transferred into your account and it becomes an obsession. Any lives that get wrecked in the wake of that obsession, they do not care about. GLAMAFRICA.COM

cover story There are some good blogs out there, do not get me wrong. I am not a great fan of BellaNaija, but she is smart, she is articulate, and she knows what she is doing. Even when she attacks me or writes about me, you will know that there is the chance of a researched truth, though it may not be in its entirety. So, there are one or two good blogs out there that make an effort to research. Linda Ikeji is one of the lamest of them all, and some others that do not make any effort, they just cut and paste. There are people who are really trained for this job, they understand this job, people who are intellectually gifted as writers, yet they are taking food out of their mouths because of the new order of things. There is one they call Ladun, with me I call names if I want to, I do not care. This is stuff that fellow so called celebs want to talk about but do not have the balls to. This is part of the gains of already being labelled a black sheep, whatever I say now would not shock anybody. I just keep it real”.

and that is what I am doing right now. For me, it is not about riches anymore, it is about wealth. I want to create the kind of wealth that would make my next generation wake up every day and be able to recreate it and turn it into a generational success. I want to hold my old wife by my hands when I am all bent, and we will still be laughing together. In 5 years, I want to still see my mother, I want to see my sisters all married because I trained them in school, so I feel like a surrogate father to them. I want to be able to take kids off the street and wipe tears off the faces of widows”. Finally, you think you know Jim Iyke now? He doesn’t think so – “I am so many things to different people; the wild one, the unpredictable one, the crazy one, the smart one etc, but the industry has forged many dimensions of me. The public persona is out there and is pretty much well known, and everybody is entitled to their opinion of it, but it does not determine who I am, not in the slightest. The public sometimes gets to have glimpses of what I am like in private; the family man, the business man, the entrepreneur, the philanthropist, the passionate and the compassionate man, one that is in tune with my God and my family. But I think people would rather go with the image of ‘me’ that suits their imagination, the one they are most comfortable with”.

While keeping it real, does he plan to go into Hollywood with this attitude and which Hollywood star would he want to act alongside with… “Denzel Washington has lived quite an exemplary life. It is not because he is a good looking ladies’ man, because he has won Oscars, or because he has been in the same marriage with Paula for over 20 years, but because he is a man who still finds time to pray on set. So Hollywood still works, but how does it work? It is by taking the effects of Hollywood and making it your own, as opposed to the effects of Hollywood making you their own. That is all I want, the life and times of Denzel does it for me. I do not want to know what he does in secret, but the public and the private suffices for me. If you find a place with God in this trade we ply, I think you have taken the first 20 steps to enormous legendary success, and that is where I want to be”. And where does he see himself in the next 5 years? “Hopefully doing something enormous like a Bill Gate foundation. I want to attend charity events and reckon with the legends in charity. I want to be able to give so much to charity that will draw people’s jaws to the floor. Not because I have so much, but because I have the balls to. I want to be a charity empire on my own,

But before we round up, he has a message for his fans “God is first. You look up to me; we all look up to him. I tell my fans every day, never be fooled by what you read in the media, do not forget everybody has an interest. Nobody will say ‘’Jim Iyke is a good guy, he does charity’’, because that is not interesting news. They would rather say I fought on the street, I broke a girl’s heart, and that to them is news. Once you begin to understand the order as to how life works and what people derive from the good and bad things they say, then you will be able to be more tolerant, more patient”.

Q: What’s your definition of a perfect woman? A: A woman you can’t go wrong with is your mother. A perfect woman in your life is the one that sees you as her child that loves you as her child. A woman that finds your jokes funny, that finds your weakness, hides it but reveals your strength. One who gives you honest criticism and allows you to criticize her as well. A woman that pushes you to strive to be bigger and sets competition for you. A woman that gives herself wholly when she’s making love to you. A woman that can lift you before God like no other person. Q: So how many pairs of shoes do you own? A: I have stopped counting because it is getting embarrassing. I left about 150 in Abuja, I have some in New York, which I am yet to collect for obvious reasons. I have started building a collection in Ghana, which is almost 48. I have about 19 pairs in my sister’s house in London. I have about 8 unclaimed shoes with my shopper in Turkey and 5 pairs in a friend’s house in Houston. If you look at it, my shoe collection is intimidating, that is the best way I can put it, it intimidates me. Q: When did you last use the public transport? A: Last year, I did a bus in London. It was in the evening, and I covered up with a baseball cap, zipped my jacket up to my cheek and wore big shades. I am sure people were wondering if I was a criminal. Q: If you were not an actor, what would you have been? A: A financier. I like the world of business, so I would have been a business man. Q: What’s your definition of fun? A: Anything that brings out that adrenaline in me. I like extreme sports, I enjoy little spaces, I enjoy reading books. I enjoy intelligent conversations with people that teach me new things. I love my dad’s mind, it is very keen. He has a very absorbing mind. He does not have a PHD but he has learnt the power of research. Q: What’s the most expensive item that you own? A: Within my jewellery collection, I own an expensive watch but I do not want to say how much it is. It was in my crazy days when I woke up and did stupid things. But now I see it as an investment Q: What will we never see you wear? A: You will never see me wear one of those speedos looking tights that you tuck into boots. It usually comes in these amazing rainbow colours all in the name of fashion. I am extremely brave and fearless when it comes to fashion, but that is insanity, not fashion bravery. Q: When you see a lady, what attributes does she need to have before you consider her sexy or appealing? A: I search for something that makes her stand out, it could be the fire in her eyes, the swing of her hips, the strength in her character, the

Personal with Jim

boldness in her stare, the way she carries herself with her head up and shoulders high with a gaze that is unmatched. Then when she speaks, what comes out of her mouth is important. It has never been just about what she wears, but what is underneath. Q: You would rather live on the street than ...? A: I would rather live on the street than be unkind to a widow Q: What would you miss about being a celebrity should you decide not to be? A: The doors it opens. It opens doors that even men of power and authority cannot easily access. I would miss that. Q: Who was your childhood crush? A: A youth corper living next to my father’s house. She was so beautiful; she liked me a lot, but saw me as her baby brother. She used to put my arm around her waist and though she thought it was on her waist, I was in fact doing something else. She saw me as a 12 year old on her waist, but I was a man and I was doing manly things. If she knew half of my history at 12, she would not have let me, saw me as her kid brother, but I kept saying to myself, “if this girl makes a mistake, I will show her that I am indeed a man” Q: What was your nickname as a child? A: Ebony, because I was so dark I was almost blue. My cousins turned off the lights to make me mad, so only my eyes and my teeth would glow in the dark. Q: What’s the perfect holiday to you? A: Holiday with my best friends, being stupid and doing things we enjoy. Biking, mountain climbing, throwing food at people when they are not looking. Yes, we do that. We threw food at a builder in Germany, he came after us, and I knew martial arts would not save me so I ran away, but we got caught. It is not being in an expensive hotel where everybody serves you, for me it is about getting back to your roots. I would love to do these things here, but no, I cannot because rumours would start flying, so I do it in Europe. What keeps me on the edge is my perfect holiday, when you eat burgers on the road, walking up to catch the train without having people bug you. Q: When was the last time you said ‘Do you know who I am’? A: I used to say it a lot back then. I used to get mad when I walked into a place and people pretended that they didn’t know me. Now, I have gotten to that place where I am so comfortable with who I am. It is people who still have things to prove that do that. I want to go out, find a small corner and hope nobody comes for a picture or anything so I can eat my food in peace. Q: What are your activities when you wake up in the morning? A: I wake up say 5am, get on my knees and do what I have to do to spiritually get myself right. When I am done, I run. I also do endurance training, sit ups and martial arts.

ALL ABOUT GROOMING YOUR HAIR by Frank White

F

or the best part of two and a half decades I have been nothing but clean shaven, however I recently tried to grow a beard in accordance with the current trend but in the past few months I have come to realise that to groom a beard, first you must grow one — a feat not easily accomplished by everyone. How quickly facial hair grows and how long it will grow often depends on genes, Stimulated by the male hormone dihydrotestosterone, the same hormone linked to male pattern baldness, facial hair grows at the same rate as scalp hair, generally half an inch a month, said Dr. Sobel, who counsels patients w h o want to grow a thicker beard to take a multivitamin with high levels of vitamin B complex (which may help speed hair growth) and to possibly try using Minoxidil

(5 percent), which is prescribed for hair loss on the scalp.(I know this because I have tried it) But beware of possible hair growth on other areas of the face.

suggests first-time beard growers take a photo of a beard they like to their barber or stylist if they aren’t sure what will look best.

Itchiness, a common complaint among men growing out their beards, can be allayed with a leave-in conditioner to soften hair follicles. Bluebeard’s Beard Saver, for example, uses aloe vera to soothe skin and lime essential oil to break down trapped dirt, which can lead to pimples and further discomfort. Men prone to forming acne should also steer clear of products with jojoba oil, which can clog pores and consider using a cleanser with salicylic acid.

And yet, for some men, tearing out photos from magazines and keeping a lineup of products on the bathroom shelf may defeat the purpose of growing a beard in the first place. “If I had to go through another regimen for my beard, I don’t think I would have one,” said Daniel Langer, the chief marketing officer for Oribe Hair Care. Mr. Langer has his one-inch full beard trimmed by his hairstylist or a barber every four weeks, but otherwise does very little maintenance.

In terms of finding the right shape or length of beard to suit your face and aesthetics, some people favour a more natural-looking beard — not too long and not overly manicured — others warn against shaving the neckline too close to the chin. It can make you look fat or like you’re in a gang. Meanwhile my barber

Whereas I manage to do even less. “I take an electric razor on setting No. 3 and trim the entire beard, careful not to take off too much but also keeping it from looking unkempt “No shampoo, just soap in the shower.” “That’s how a real man does it.”

EDITORS NOTE

“It’s a new era in

fashion - there are no rules. It’s all about the individual and personal style, wearing high-end, low-end, classic labels, and up-and-coming designers all together

- Alexander McQueen.

This issue, being our maiden edition has been a journey for me – an inspirational one. Amidst the turmoil in several African countries, we cannot deny that there is a lot for this great continent to offer the world in terms of culture, tourism, entertainment and even fashion. African fashion is fast taking its place in the international scene, with high street and high end fashion outlets dedicating an entire collection to African inspired pieces, and with several African designers showcasing their designs to the world at International fashion shows. Glam Africa is here to celebrate the Africans and businesses behind these key creative industries which we believe in a few years would create a new meaning to the word ‘Africa’. Join us on this journey to discovering some of Africa’s hidden beauty. In this issue, we speak to one of Africa’s most popular and controversial actor, Jim Iyke. And for the first time in a while, he addresses some of the controversial issues surrounding him. We take you through some runway trends from around Africa, holiday getaways in Africa you should put down on your bucket list and hangout spots inspired by Africa within London. As cliché as it sounds, it is a must-read!

orn in the city of Abidjan, our cover girl grew up in San Pedro, a town further along the coast. But her rise to fame was winning Miss World Cote D’Ivoire 2014 beauty pageant which led her to representing her country at the Miss World 2014. Currently a business school student, Jennifer who although didn’t make it to the top 5 still hopes to be a Marketing and Event PR Leader in Africa. Our congratulations are still in order on her journey to Miss World 2014 stage, and curious to how she felt when her name was called as the Miss Côte d’Ivoire 2014 she says “I remember as it was yesterday because it was the best day of my life. I was very excited. In my mind many ideas came, first of all “I am more than just daddy’s girl; it is time to also become a WOMAN” What has the journey been like for Jennifer and how she felt representing her country at the pageant, she keeps it very brief “Whether you are a leader in something, it is very important to evaluate your personality, the opportunities, the challenges and all the areas where growth is needed. Representing my country was a big opportunity to discover many countries, including the United Kingdom to participate at the Miss World pageant. It is a fabulous adventure!” Being a French native, you will wonder how it was for Ms Yeo communicating with other contestants who speak different languages “I am a French native and the challenge was to build relationships with those who speak other languages, it was also an opportunity for me to improve my spoken English. The highlight of my journey to Miss World was being the favorite contact of all the girls”. For a 20 year old girl, fashion and style goes a long way for her image, who influences her style? Who are her icons? She says “I think fashion and style is like being “dressed to impress”. I don’t have a particular style or style icon; I am an original piece addict. I can be classy today and tomorrow sporty. I believe in originality”.

With African fashion on a fast growing pace, and not a lot coming from Ivory Coast, what are her thoughts on African fashion in general, and on Ivory Coast in particular. “I think African fashion is going places. Africans are putting in their best to promote our culture all over the world. Many international brands and celebrities are recognizing and using our African prints and international celebrities are wearing it. It makes us fierce! The fashion industry in Cote DÍvoire very small but it is definitely growing in terms of professionalism and economy growth. People are investing in the sector” Is Yeo single, in a relationship or secretly married? – “Yeo, me myself and I are in a relationship with ourselves and I’m very happy”. So how would you describe your ideal man? “A man who make me laugh every day. A man who is like a brother, a father and a best friend”. If Yeo can change one thing about Cote DÍvoire what will it be? “I would delete in the heart of my people, the hurts of war. I know time will grant me this wish. Recently we won the Africa football cup and it has brought so much happiness to the country” Where does she see herself in 10 years? “I hope to have a successful marketing & events company in Africa and be married with maybe 2 children”.

2015 Hair Trends We Dare You To Try by Dawn (Afrotility)

W

ell Dear readers we are well into a new year and so we at GlamAfrica thought what better way to celebrate the versatility of ‘Afro-textured’ hair than to highlight Bold trends to try out in 2015. Whether we sport ‘relaxed’ or ‘natural’ tresses, this year is all about being bold and daring. I hope you are ready!

Big Bold Cornrows

Faux Locs

The Afro!

Jumbo Box Braids

Cornrows have been around forever and are a classic style. They are basically rows of interwoven hair strands lying flat against the scalp. This year why not make a statement with giant cornrows like Ciara or go for a cornrow ‘crown’ like Shingai Shoniwa?

Fancy finding your inner ‘Bob Marley and the iThrees” this year. Then we dare you to try faux locs. This is a super cute but statement style that allows you to be loc’d but without the commitment. So the celebrities did it with lots of colour but we think this is a style anyone can pull off just by maybe going for locs that a medium in size as they will be easier to style in ponytails or wear to work.

This is easier if you are a ‘natural’ but we recently saw Naomi Campbell sport an Afro Wig. We love Viola Davis for showing how our 49year old sister can wear the Afro in a classy sexy grown up kinda way. This is bold because to be fair we come under a lot when we sport our natural hair, so weaves and braids are seen as “more acceptable”.

Why are they a bold move? The clue is in the name. These are not your ordinary medium sized braids. These a fat chunky and long glorious braids to wear for that relaxed “Im a free spirit” kind of look.

We think giant styles are workable into any lifestyle as it brings a fresh classy look which is refreshing. Try matching your extensions to your own hair colour to pull the “I have a full head of hair “ look.

incorporate into your weave or braids?

If you work in a corporate environment then more classical colours may be less controversial so stick to your hair colour or go for brown highlights. See Ciara and Jhene for inspiration

Make it work by gently blow drying your hair or better yet “african threading” your natural hair whilst damp is a heat-free way to stretch it out. Or just buy a wig or get an afro weave if your hair is relaxed.

Make it work by tweaking the length. No one wants you fired cause your boss thinks your braids should not be trailing the floor. Add some colour to them to keep things fun and style like the gorgeous Keri Hilson. Though not jumbo Stephanie Okeres braids look very classy styled into an up do.

Colour Colour Colour

The Lace Front Wig

This has got to be my personal favorite as it pushes hair boundaries and is very liberating! Think Nqobile of CEO Dancers, and Raven-Symone. I hear you screaming “what”! True their jobs are very accommodating to the look but it can be worked by us mere mortals.

There is absolutely nothing wrong in wearing wigs or lace front. Wigs are super safe and allows you access to your hair whilst giving you the option to change your length, colour and hair density. The crown for bold wigs is jointly shared by” Beyonce” and Nicki Minaj. Nicki’s full fringe wig was a sellout for a leading hair supplier in England.

This is the trend that is flexible as it can be incorporated into ANY hairstyle. If a full head of green hair is not workable why not get a pack of coloured hair to

You could get clip-in tracks to shake things up if you have chemically straightened hair. You don’t need to dye your own hair ladies but if you do get a professional to do it. You want it to look classy right? Also maybe settle for a semi-permanent colour instead of a permanent colour. You could even go for the ombré look or chocolate brown and honey golds if the idea of purple hair will lead to disciplinary action at work. Better yet get a wig with interesting colours (not the fancy dress type please) and it can ease you into the world of colour safely.

A well fitting wig is one of the safest for black women as there is no pulling and tugging at your roots. Just always remember to wear a wig cap to reduce friction and look after your own hair underneath the wig. You can sport a half wig if you have relaxed hair as it will change up your look just make sure the texture matches. You can get lacewings in all textures and colours so we dare you to give the wig a go. Don’t rush the buying process and make sure you try it on before buying it. If you don’t like it you won’t wear it so enjoy the process

So Ladies, go take on our dare and try something bold but beautiful.

Happy hair loving!

With her team behind her Edee has already made a powerful impact on the industry making her highly sought after especially due to her renowned creative flair and without a doubt her big smile and willingness to please her precious clients. This influences everything from her day to day studio life to her social media and including her Edee Beau YouTube Channel. We had a quick chat with Edee about beauty ideas, trends and lots more. Enjoy;

GA: What’s trending in the world of makeup in 2015? Edee Beau: One trend that I think we are going to be seeing a lot of is

60

SPRING 2015

the ‘minimalist’ look. This is a look that keeps colours to a minimum i.e eyeshadows are a barely there shade and lips are a muted nude lined with a darker or similar shade, and focuses on the eyes by using graphic winged liner and long natural looking false lashes. This look surprisingly takes just as long to achieve as some of the brighter bolder makeup looks that were popular last year.

GA: Can you tell us how we can recreate this look at home? Edee Beau: Starting with

clean skin that has been cleansed, toned, moisturised and primed is always advisable before wearing any makeup as having an amazing base makes the look 100x better.

For Eyes; When doing makeup it

is usually recommend to start with the eyes first. Make sure your brows are groomed to your taste. For the minimalist look make sure eyelids are primed- I like to use Urban Decays Primer Potion- then apply nude eyeshadow of preference. Once you are happy with the eyeshadow, then comes the graphic winged liner. The purpose of this liner is to make the eyes pop as the eyeshadow is very

GLAMAFRICA.COM

For your face; Seamless blending is a necessity when creating the minimalist look. You don’t want your highlight too bright, or your contour too dark. The trick is to highlight using only 1 shade lighter than your base foundation and going only 1 shade darker for contouring. This enables your face to still have a sculpted defined look without being too harsh. For this look bronzers are used in place of traditional blusher on the cheeks. I like to use MAC Mineralize products for this as they create a warm dewy sunkissed glow. For lips; Lip liner is definitely an essential for this look! Line lips using a warm brown lip liner such as MAC Bittersweet or Chestnut and apply a peachy nude such as MAC Cherish to the centre of lips and blend out using a lip brush until the blend between the lipstick and liner are seamless. And voila! There you have the complete look!

GA: Beauty Dos & Donts for day and night time make up Edee Beau: Daytime makeup Do - Keep a clean simple colour palette. It gives a youthful vibrancy to the skin when it is not heavily laden with colour during the day time. Don’t - Get carried away with glitter and shine. A little extra shine or glitter can spice up an evening look, but during the day it can be distracting, kind of like wearing a sequinned gown to the office. Nighttime Makeup Do - Be daring! At night almost anything goes! Smokey eye or big false lashes it’s up to you! Don’t - Colour Clash! For example bright eyeshadows with bright lipsticks. The rule of thumb is to focus on one key area. If your eyes are the focus then by all means use strong eye makeup but keep the lips nude with a nude shade of lipstick and gloss and vice versa, if the lipstick is going to be a popping pink or sultry red keep the eyeshadow to a minimum and use clean skin tone shades.

GA: 4- 5 Must have beauty products at the moment? Edee Beau:

• Face Atelier Ultra Matte Primer • La Mer Lifting & Firming Mask • Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lips • Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Fluid Foundation • MAC lip liner in Chestnut

GA: One beauty tip/ piece of advice? Edee Beau: Take good care of your skin ladies and your skin will take care of you. Look at it like this your face is like a canvas, when it is fresh and well taken care of your makeup will look smoother. Take up a daily routine of cleansing, toning and moisturising and never go to sleep with your makeup on. Most importantly drink at least 2 litres of water a day as this keeps skin hydrated and prevents the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. GA: What is the best way of avoiding the “melting face” look in hot weather. Any products we should be using to ensure our makeup looks great all day? Please share a guaranteed 5-minute. Edee Beau: The best way to avoid the dreaded ‘melting face’ look in hot weather is to make sure you prime your face with a good mattifying primer. My personal favourite is the Face Atelier Ultra Matte as it is lightweight and non caking which is perfect for European Summers. However, when in hotter countries you may need to use something a little more heavy duty such as Milk of Magnesia which literally ensures that your makeup isn’t going anywhere! Even if you do break a sweat this is easily fixed by using facial blotting papers and a little bit of powder and your makeup is back to being 100% fabulous! Hair done? Nails Done! Everything did. By Senior Online Editor Ama Badu

Nothing completes an outfit quite like the right nails and with all the money we spend to look fine it’s always nice to find ways to cut corners right ladies? Here are some ways to have salon fresh nails without the extra cost, just the nail vanish you already have.

Tribal

1. Start off with a bright base coat 2. Using the tip of the nail varnish brush or a nail art paint brush paint on four triangles at each corner of your nail 3. When dry add smaller white specks at the centre of your triangle 4. Using a black nail art pen accentuate the rim of the triangle and the centre specks

The Quilted Nail

1. Begin with a coloured base coat 2. Once dry place three thin strips of tape diagonally across your nail 3. Repeat with the tape placed in the opposite direction 4. Now re-coat your nail the same colour as your base (this step can also be done with a different colour if you wish) 5. When fully dry, remove stripes of tape 6. Finish off with a thin layer of clear vanish

Kaleidoscope Dream

1. Start off with a clear (or translucently coloured) base coat 2. Using a nail art brush add lines of different shades, thicknesses and spacing. For a cursive effect, draw a semi-circle for the line nearest to the cuticle 3. Using a fine nail art brush pull the coloured lines in the direction you desire (a different direction will give you a different pattern). The key to this stop is speed. It must be done BEFORE the lines dry 4. Add a clear top coat and the look is complete

The Ombre

Ombres have transcended from the hair salon to the beauty shop. Achieving this look on your nails is easy; all you need is a couple of tooth picks (to mix the colours together), a sponge and your nail varnish. 1. Begin with a light base colour and allow to dry 2. On a disposable surface, paint two sections of the colours you wish to use ad use a tooth pick to merge them together 3. Use a sponge to blend 4. Using the same sponge, dab the ombre colour onto your nail until you achieve the desired effect 5. Add finishing of clear top coating

Lace on Pastel

1. Start off with a clear base coat 2. Section off half of your nail diagonally with tape (this will act as a resistant so you get a smooth straight line) and add a nail colour of your choice to the tape-free section 3. Along the line where the coloured varnish meets the tape, draw a row of semi-circles in a contrasting colour using a fine nail art brush or a nail art pen

Roses

1. Start off with a dry base colour 2. Using a contrasting colour, paint rounded blobs on your nail (this will make the impression of the roses so choose a colour you would like and leave a reasonable amount of space between each blob) 3. When dry paint a small black u shape at the centre of the blob with a fine nail art brush or pen. Repeat going outwards and increase size slightly as you do 4. Using another fine art brush or pen, paint around and within each rose to accentuate. Add green flicks to create an impression of leaves 5. For a smooth finish add a layer of clear nail varnish

4. Repeat the row of semi-circles on top of the one you have. You can repeat this step two or three times to liking 5. Now add small circular dots to the top row of semi-circles 6. Remove the tape when your coat of colour is fully dry and neaten the line by using you fine brush or pen to draw a thicker line. Add small circular dots to this line 7. Finish off with a layer or clear nail varnish

CALL FOR PEACE AND UNITY

AFRICA UNITE Hashtags You Should be Aware of, if you are not!

Here’s a look at some of the most influential hashtags of the year 2014 calling for peace, unity and love in Africa;

1. #BringBackOurGirls

If you are not aware of the #BringbackOurGirls campaign then you have been living in a cave. On April 15th, 273 school girls were kidnapped from the Chibok Government Secondary School by Boko Haram Islamic militant group in Nigeria. The hashtag #BringBackOurGirls became a global social media rallying cry to generate attention for the girls. Sadly to date none of the young women have been rescued (though a few escaped), despite the extensive Twitter campaign that went viral.

2. #AfricaStopEbola

Some of Africa’s top musicians launched an alternative Ebola appeal song to Bob Geldof’s Band Aid’s new recording of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”. The profits went to Medicins Sans Frontieres’ efforts to fight the virus that has killed more than 7,000 people in West Africa this year. The launch of the song coincided with #AfricaStopEbola trending with many repeating the lyrics which are meant to educate Africans about the disease, as well as giving hope

3. #IamLiberianNotaVirus

Following the fight by Africans to stop Ebola, Shoana Solomon let the hashtag speak for itself when she captioned her picture, “#iamliberiannotavirus.” After her daughter was accused of being a vector of disease. #IamaLiberianNotaVirus is a social media campaign started by four women in order to educate the public and end the stigma of Ebola. The campaign features a powerful video by Shoana Clarke Solomon, a Liberian photographer, TV host, and mentor.

4. #MyDressMyChoice

In November in at least three incidents, mobs of Kenyan men publicly attacked and stripped women wearing skirts, claiming they were “inappropriately” dressed. This prompted a march through downtown Nairobi by hundreds of people, protesting the assaults across the country. The hashtag #MyDressMyChoice soon began trending in Kenya - and was picked up by other activists around the world - as social media was set alight by those who demanded that women have the right to dress how they want without being harassed or attacked, while others criticised what they deemed inappropriate dress.

5. #Orwell

In Egypt a student was arrested at Cairo University. The police said it was because he was filming without permission, but the initial report in the Al Masry al Youm newspaper claimed that he was arrested for carrying a copy of George Orwell’s novel “1984”. The twitter-sphere jumped on what they saw as a connection - comparing modern-day Egypt to the dystopian world created by the British novelist and #Orwell began trending.

6. #EvilNanny

Suspecting that his nanny was abusing his toddler, Ugandan father, Eric Kamanzi, set up a hidden camera in his living room. The result was a horrific video showing his nanny beating and standing on his little girl. The video circulated on social media and went viral - it was shared on Twitter with #EvilNanny and it became a catalyst for debate in civil society about child raising in modern Uganda.

7. #JusticeforHanna

The name Hanna Lalango was mentioned in the Ethiopian Reporter Amharic edition for the first time on November 16, 2014 despite her ordeal taking place in October. She was a 10th grade student who was kidnapped, gang-raped and eventually lost her life. The local media’s reporting on the case was shockingly low, demonstrating the lack of dialogue on gender-based violence within Ethiopia. As a result #JusticeForHanna was launched, driven by a community determined to bring her rapists to justice and a statement that young Ethiopian women should not and could no longer tolerate gender-based violence.

8. #ThingsIloveaboutSouthSudan

Following a renewed outbreak of violence in South Sudan in December last year, the country was plunged into chaos which resulted into the deaths of thousands of people within a few days, and the displacement of millions. #ThingsIloveaboutSouthSudan was launched as a way of reintroducing positivity, reminding the world that the country is not all about conflict, into the increasingly dire dialogue on South Sudan. Tweets went viral and included things like the food, local customs and the hospitality.

9. #ICantBreathe

Eric Garner, an unarmed black man, died after a white officer put him in a chokehold. In a video of the fatal encounter, Garner repeatedly cries, “I can’t breathe! I can’t breathe!” That phrase became the hashtag that united the movement to end police brutality.
