Kinnetia Isidore, Pantomime Costume Designer Kinnetia, 30, is the costume designer for Aladdin at the Lyric Theatre. She lives in south London with her family

M Y A L A R M G O E S O F F… At 8am. I move like a hurricane in the morning but I always take time to think about my outfit. I’m often inspired by the shows I work on; when I’m doing a pantomime, it can get quite OTT. I’ll quickly eat some toast, then jump in my car at 9am for the one-hour drive to the Lyric. I’M RESPONSIBLE FOR… Bringing scripts to life: costume is about telling a story. I’ll sketch my designs, then work with my team of four to make them. We often work to a budget, so as well as creating pieces from scratch, I love sourcing things second-hand. I GOT THE JOB… Because I wanted to have fun at work. I knew I’d suit a creative career, so I went to uni to study costume design. When I graduated, I spent hours on Facebook groups, where people posted last-minute jobs. That’s how I got my first job, making an outfit for Lady Gaga on The X Factor in 2013. Then I assisted as many designers as

if I’m completely exhausted, it always makes me feel better.

DESIGNING COSTUMES IS ABOUT BRINGING SCRIPTS TO LIFE

I could, eventually landing a dream role as the costume supervisor at the Young Vic. After three years, I left for more flexibility, and I now work on an array of projects, from Zadie Smith’s The Wife Of Willesden, to Adult Children at the Donmar Warehouse. Pantomime is my favourite – it’s all sparkly and brilliantly ridiculous.

M Y T Y P I C A L DAY… Starts at 10am. First, I make a plan of action with my team – from budgeting to painting shoes. Then I’ll head into a technical rehearsal, noting any tweaks I want to make. For panto, it’s usually: “More glitter!” This Aladdin is rare in that it’s female-led, with a female director, writer and choreographer. Because I’m a woman who makes clothes, my work can sometimes be seen

M Y G O -T O S N AC K AT W O R K I S … Anything from the ‘free from’ section. I have allergies so I’m always careful, but I usually choose something chocolatey. ELLENA VINCENT AS JASMINE IN THE LYRIC’S PRODUCTION OF ALADDIN

as unimportant, but on this show there’s more equality. At the end of the day, I’ll gather my team to make any changes, and leave by 10pm.

R I G H T N O W, I ’ M FEELING… Ready for a break. Many shows were postponed in the pandemic, so I’ve had a backlog of work at once. It’s been incredible, but I’m looking forward to some time off. WHEN I’M TIRED OR STRESSED I… Dance. I started Cuban salsa lessons a few years ago and, even

My Plan B: Pianist I’ve played the piano since I was four and, although I’m now very out of practice, I’d love to resurrect my skills.

MY MOST MEMORABLE M O M E N T… Was seeing the Aladdin costumes for the first time. I started working on them in April, so it was amazing to see my designs in real life. M Y WO R ST WO R K HABIT IS… Starting things and not finishing them. It’s easy to get distracted in the workroom – there are always costumes that need my attention. M Y E M A I L I N B OX … Gives me anxiety. I’d rather call someone than sift through a huge email chain. I combat the stress by keeping things organised. A FT E R WO R K … I’ll meet up with friends or go out dancing. Even though I often do crazy hours, I’m very keen to have a life outside of my job.

WISH NO 4: A TRAVEL HELPLINE Have you attempted to leave the UK yet? Here’s what happens. You will spend at least two hours shouting at your computer. You will start having nightmares about how you will test positive the evening before you OHDYH DQG ZDWFK WKH PRQH\ VSHQW RQ ÁLJKWV DQG KRWHOV disappear like dishwater down the drain. Your bag will become littered with a thousand different pieces of paper and passenger locator forms that you will proffer to various bewildered-looking check-in desk people. Of course, this needs to happen. All I’m saying is that I’d very much like a helpline with a voice at the other end that sounds like the Cadbury Caramel Bunny to talk me through it all.
