hairstyle Work-Life balance is one of the most overused corporate phrases of the century. Whether they are large or small, our employers preach about this urban legend called “work-life balance”. No one knows what it looks like. People whisper about it at the water cooler, but no one has ever seen it happen in real life. Companies schedule conference calls at 7:30am or 6:00pm, Expecting us to travel on Sundays, return home late on Fridays, and work weekends. They send a company memo out about wellness and stress the importance of balance via email. Then another memo reiterates the policy about not talking on your cell phone while driving. Say whaaaaaat? We can’t change company policies or expectations. to make this all work -all of it. It can be done. Achieving balance is a mindset. There are a million responsibilities on any given day. Each day presents additional requests, emergencies, situations, and events that do is to decide what is really important to you and hold fast to those priorities. Knowing what you want in your life with complete clarity is incredibly important to achieve balance. Take some time to think about your life goals. What kind of life do you really want? needed to be happy will come automatically. How? By focusing on the things you want and only the things you want. You will draw more of those things into your life. When you focus on how much time and money you don’t have you will only pull more of that into your life. When we drift around in life emotional warfare affects everything. Work, family, friends, and other things can pull us into a tailspin. We can’t focus on anything. In turn, we aren’t really good at anything. We let commitments dictate our lives because we can’t say NO. We feel guilty if saying no might hurt others or that others may be disappointed in us. We show up late, we text while we drive, and take conference calls while preparing dinner. We take our kids through the fast food drive up because we have no time to cook. We are too tired for sex; we fall asleep with blackberries in our hands, and work across our laps. Does this sound familiar? Of course it does. You’re American. That’s how we roll. Follow along if you’re ready to make some changes on your day to day life. Decide what’s important in your life and what you

really want. This is so incredibly important. This will drive your daily focus. Take the time to do this now, it’s the most important thing you can do. If having dinner at the table with your family is important then say no to all other things that will prevent this from happening. Decide how many nights you can make this work and get the whole family involved with the meal planning and preparation. It IS that simple. You just have to decide. Don’t get me wrong, work is important. Respect your work because it pays your bills. While you gladly accept a paycheck every two weeks, you better damn well be focused when you’re at work. Likewise, the rest of your life matters too. You better have the same focus on your relationships with your friends, and family. You want those relationships to work too. It’s best of you, not what’s left of you. If you time, I can’t ever go out with my friends, or we never have dinner together,” then you will never have the time. You will only spiral into that same pit of despair, frazzled feelings, frustration, and disarray. Write a list of your top goals. Write down your life as you want it to be. Each day you should focus on moving closer to these things. You can say no, it’s ok. If personal or work commitments don’t contribute to these goals then you have to say no. At you have to do what you have to do, but the goals you have at work are equally important. You don’t want to waste your time there either. Every minute of every day should contribute to YOU. If you want to get in shape and have better health, you have to make a decision that this is important to you. Here’s the key: You have to have the discipline to make it happen. You might have to turn off Tosh.O earlier and get some additional rest so you can wake up an hour earlier to get to the Pilates class. You might have to take ten extra minutes to pack your own lunch vs. grabbing a sandwich from the local deli. This isn’t really about work-life balance. It is more about life balance. It’s all within your control, if you want to own it. You can choose to let your schedule and responsibilities control you. Nevertheless, you can also have the discipline and ingenuity to create the life you want. You just have to decide. Gia Claire www.giaclaire.com

It Moving I love you, I love you not. I love you, I love you not. Remember when you were

The woman on the other end of the phone however, is mistaking his simple need to

How about when a woman continues to accept a dinner invitation from a man who looks good on paper (perfect job, nice personality, affectionate, etc), but each time she goes out with him she realizes that there is just no chemistry. She vows to never do it again…until she has no other plans. A dinner invite seems better than staying in; she’s bored, or lonely.

This is my version of that tennis match that goes on in our minds when we are looking at an old relationship. When we are wondering if we want to rekindle the but unfortunately it’s a bit more complicated. I love you, I love you not. Or is it? So many of us live in relationship purgatory. It’s that relationship limbo that neither one of us can get out of because of lingering feelings, comfortable conversation, predictably good sex, or possibly out of loneliness. This is normal, according to the men and women I spoke to. There seems to always be these patterns within

We are human and we all have done something close to the above mentioned these patterns, don’t beat yourself up, or get upset that I’m holding the mirror up to you. The challenge with these behaviors and relationship patterns is that we are blocking true love. We aren’t able to be open relationship ends, it should end! It’s that

there is an actual relationship. For exam- ing. It’s that men and women can never be ple, if a woman holds on to a relationship friends. It’s true. They can’t. Keep it Moving continued

Skip the booty call with the old boyfriend. It doesn’t serve you. Get the Rabbit (or whatever the modern version is these days!) and keep it moving.

Don’t be afraid. He or she is out there. You just have to believe you deserve them, believe you deserve love, and believe you are worthy of an amazing partner. If

Skip the dinner date with the ex, because you think it’s better than being alone. It’s not. Read a book and learn something new about yourself.

because the 80% of what you really need/ want is just not happening. Something doesn’t feel right deep in your gut, you know it, but you just don’t have the courage to act on that feeling. I’m asking you to make that leap of faith. Decide if you are with the right partner and act accordingly. It is that simple. You deserve better.

So many unmarried people are staying in these two and three plus year relationships much work BEFORE marriage, what will it be like when you exchange vows? My advice is to keep it moving. Release the belief that you can mold the other person over time with your subtle, yet cajoling ways. You can’t. Most importantly, look at yourself in the mirror, and try to understand who YOU are. Look at who YOU are in a relationship and that is the only one you can change. Then, decide exactly what type of partner you want and hold on to that image of clarity. Hold on to the idea that you deserve that person. Feel that feeling of love, acceptance, comfort and joy. We tend to think that holding on to something old is easier than being open to something new. Starting a new relationship means we have to let go of the past and become vulnerable again. Once we get clarity about what we are looking for and focus on that, the rest unfolds. It is often said we only get about 80% of what we need from another person. If the person you are grappling with has that 80% and you’re expecting 100%, then you might need to adjust your expectations. If what they bring into the relationship is not the 80% of the things that are important to YOU, then keep it moving. Understanding what is important to you, what you really want and need from a partner will help you move out of these old patterns.

How to

manage a micro-managing boss Do you have a pile of papers accumulating from your boss at the end of the day? Are you sitting hands intertwined atop your desk with tasks to accomplish? Have you stared waiting for the clock to tick to 5 p.m.? Either way, we’ve all experienced micromanaging in one way or another. Before you think that a micro managing boss robs you of your freedom and limits your ability to spread your wings in the work place.

It’s essential to consider the pros and cons of your situation. Are you feeling pressure from a new boss on a project that will eventually pass? Is this person in for the long haul? Regardless of the circumstances, you have two options. Either adjust or get out. Micro-managing is a dirty word with a lot of negative connotations. Believe it or not, not all micro-managing is a bad thing. Well trained administrators not only encourage personal growth and unity within a company. They also have learned how to manage authoritatively without stripping employees of their ability to perform well Unfortunately not all bosses have successfully acquired proficiency in this arena. So the million dollar question is this: how do you deal with a stick-in-the mud micro manager? Here are some tipsto help you remain positive when circumstances aren’t so ideal. Wear black. Dark colors give you a sense of authority. Make lists. Preparation is the key in most situations. Micromanaging is not any different. Get involved and volunteer on committees where decision-making comes into play. Exercise your right to have a voice in your work environ-

ment. Make an attempt to know your bosses on a more personal level. Yeah, maybe suck-up a little. Why not, If it makes your day a little more pleasant. Keep a positive attitude. This makes every situation more tolerable. I’m sure your coworkers are probably not thrilled either. So showing that you are easy to work with may give you an edge and perhaps show your higher-ups that you are capable of being flexible. If you are a person who can’t appreciate being lead by a steady hand, you aren’t alone. A huge debate in politics recently is the micro-managing going on in Washington. Many states and citizens aren’t keen on the idea either. No Child Left Behind, a federal mandate that requires schools to increase student learning and raise test scores. It applies various penalties if goals aren’t achieved. This is an extreme case of the national government exercising their control over the states. Stephani Fohman, Belleview High School’s chorus and English teacher shares a

positive outlook about bosses with a strict hand in your daily activities. “I am an abstract and random person. I like to be left with my own creative devices, but if you are a regimented person micro-managing offers a schedule. A list of things to do gives a person set goals to work toward. However, sometimes it’s necessary to play the game.” After exercising all of these options without success, perhaps more extreme measures are necessary. If that’s the case, consider whether or not you can communicate openly to express the way you are feeling with your boss. Communication often makes a world of difference. If not, consider exploring other career paths. Remember even if your current position has shown you no courtesy, it’s essential to part on fair terms. Be polite and give a two week notice. Don’t allow emotions to get the best of you and don’t burn your bridges.

“To thine own s With one out of every two marriages ending in divorce, I can’t understand why people are in such a hurry to rush to the altar. Ahem…Ms. Kardashian? No offense, I am a HUGE fan of “Keeping up with the Kardashians.” I was stunned to see that after only a handful of weeks and perhaps real life experiences she was already willing to end the marriage. Granted, I’m not in her shoes. Mostly because I can’t afford them, but the bottom line is she is re-joining that group of people who stare blankly before checking the box at the doctor’s office that says “single.” Wait, she might have to check, “divorced x2”. I’m not hating at all. I’m just trying to illustrate a point. When women hit the age of twentyfive they start thinking that they HAVE to get married. When they hit thirty they think they HAVE to start having babies. Well if you do the math of life statistics and you realize some important facts: First, women are living well into there 80’s and men in there 70’s. If you get married at twenty-five you’re looking at forty plus years with the same person. I’m sorry, but for the most part this isn’t happening. Why should it? Why should we be in such a hurry to check the “married” box? We are evolving so much as human beings that the rate of evolution in married years is almost impossible to calculate. We can only hope that the person we chose as the “one” is evolving at the same pace as we are. If not, we end up categorically, metaphorically, and numerically, back at one. Just one… no more plus one. So why hurry?

Let me put my non-scientific spin on this to put it all into perspective. First, being alone is fabulous. There is no negative stigma that can change my mind on this. It screams high selfesteem and confidence. It says, “I’m waiting for the right one and I’m not going to compromise what I’m looking for.” Second, women are having babies well into their early to mid forties. So there isn’t any real need to hurry and bed down for the sake of pro-creation. I’m just saying. Having babies is complicated and it changes your life forever so before you jump – THINK.

Now, that I have pontificated my point on this subject long enough let’s get back to point number one. Being single is fabulous (I echo Ms Carrie Bradshaw wholeheartedly). Why? If you have

“Why haven’t I found the ONE yet?” “What’s wrong with me, that I can’t find the right person?” My personal favorite, “Why do I always find Mr. Wrong instead of Mr. Right?” been asking yourselves the following questions you really need to read this. Well, I’m here to tell you that this is all crap that you tell yourself. None of it’s true and you are exactly where you are supposed to be. You’re on track with your life. It’s all part of your magical orchestration. What’s magical orchestration? Fair question. It’s the time in your life when everything comes together. You are no longer competing for things that

n self be true” you think you need to have or want. Rather, your life falls into place. The orchestration of love, career, and your ultimate purpose in this world becomes clear. You can’t rush this, it takes time. It occurs when you slow down and enjoy your place in life. When you figure out what you really want. The focus on finding the “one,” puts way too much pressure on the timeline of things that we think have to occur at certain milestones in our lives. There is so much to do and to explore in life. It’s only when we have our own proverbial “shit” together, that we can truly attract all the love we could possibly desire. Dare I say the, “one?” So take stock of your life. Ask yourself, “What do I really want?” “What brings me joy?” Create the life you want by fulfilling your own desires and dreams. Enjoy building your career and establishing yourself in your chosen field. Build a support system and learn to cherish the people in your life. Do Yoga, write a book, sing a song, go to Arthur Murray to take dance lessons, and travel somewhere, anywhere. Design your life and enjoy the moment of NOW. Chasing love and being in a hurry to get married will only lead to subsequent disappointment. Regardless of your present age, it’s a well-known fact that we evolve into the woman we are going to be once we hit our mid thirties. Our confidence glows, careers flourish, and our inner beauty exudes love. Men are attracted to confidence not, “clingers”. So, live your life. Do YOU. Take chances and let chasing love go. Loneliness is a state of mind. Sure, sometimes we genuinely feel lonely.

When we rid ourselves of the notions that we can’t be alone, shouldn’t be alone, or that it’s “uncool” to be alone. We can actually give ourselves permission to just do whatever the hell we want and let GO! There is no shame in spending a night in, catching up on some alone time, and slowing down for a bit. On the other hand, go out, and dance like your hair is on fire. Run at the crack of dawn and watch the sun come up. Go to a planetarium to watch the jellyfish. Cook your favorite meal while playing your favorite music, while drinking your favorite wine, and enjoy every bite. Buy a puppy. Write a blog. Make jewellery, paint on canvas, learn to play the piano, or whatever makes you happy. Create your life! Live your life! Love your life! Nothing is sexier to a man than a woman who has a life of her own, with confidence in her step, peace, happiness, and genuine love for herself in her heart. Keep in mind this very important thought. If you are one of those women who say (even secretly to yourself ): “I’ll be happy when I have a boyfriend,” or “When I can finally find love.” You need to realize the danger of that statement. It implies that you are not happy and only the presence of another’s love will bring happiness into your life. Thus when it leaves, your happiness goes with it. We can’t afford to put our happiness in someone else’s hands. Be single. Be fabulous. Be true to YOU. Shakespeare said it best. Gia Claire www.giaclaire.com

It’s a sunny day in Carson, California the day I go to Lolo’s Boutique. As soon as I enter, I feel a warm and welcoming presence. There is jazz and neosoul playing in the background with beautiful clothing and fashion accessories hung all around the store. This ambience is the set for Taaji Rauf’s book signing of Short Stories. I whip out my recorder and get to know the woman behind the book—Taaji Rauf. eight very different tales. As a reader each story will give you something different and leave you wanting more from Rauf. Truthfully, each story could be its own novel. At the end of each narrative I was left wanting more, but in a good way. I found myself asking, “What happened to character so-and-so or an author allows me to have a dialogue with their work it is a good sign. Usually with a collection of short stories there is one common setting. However, with Rauf’s stories you end one and travel to the next one, which you can bet it will be in a very different time period and with different characters. The reader is taken to a slave plantation in the 1800s, to a drug infested neighborhood in D.C, and even to a train during a nightmare. Through a book of short stories you can see a writer’s creativity as well as the growth of their writing. Rauf wrote these stories while she attended Howard University in Washington D.C. Rauf used her surroundings for inspiration, which you can tell from the settings she chooses; D.C and her hometown of Los Angeles both play prominent roles in her writing. Whenever she is out, Rauf likes to observe people and their relationships. The world is her inspiration. There is always a story brewing in her mind. Her characters are developed and described in such great detail a reader can formulate the image of picture for her readers throughout her stories. Her ability to use words to paint a picture allows her readers to envision the characters she creates— from their faces to their surroundings. She is able to immediately engross you with her stories, while also keeping you interested as they develop. At one point you feel as if you are on the train character’s nightmare. A true talent that is not taught; Rauf is a natural.

It is a breath of fresh air to read an urban work that is not simply about sex and drugs. All the stories have a central theme; the characters are in search of answers to a hidden treasure

which is inspired by Rauf’s younger brother, gives a voice to an unborn child. As the narrator, he is telling us about his family before he family full of love, but with a secret hidden in the attic. In this tale, the narrator is cleaning up the family’s vault when he suddenly locates love in a shoebox. Another story, “Black Robin thirsts for knowledge, which leads him to discover how a life of crime can turn into spreading love to his community. Rauf says, “I will be turning all of these stories This is exciting news for her fans, many of whom want to know more about a few of the stories and characters such as Sinica and Toxic Urine Boy. In addition to turning the short stories into books, she is also working on her second novel. There are many great things to come from Rauf. Before Life is just the beginning of her life as a writer and publisher. Rauf is not only a writer, but also a high school math teacher in Los Angeles. Her second novel will be a romance story available to the public in September 2012. Despite the clichés surrounding romance chic lit, I’m sure this will not be your typical romance novel! I challenge readers of urban Stories. This is not the typical book in the African-American Interest Section in your bookstore. The characters and plot have depth. You will not be disappointed with the book and will want to read more from Rauf. com, Barnes & Noble and even as an e-book.

Diet, Blood and a

Bathing Suit By: Alecia Sampson

The holidays are over, your refrigerator is packed full of leftovers, and you are between 2-10 pounds heavier (approximately). Now, February has rolled around, and spring break is peeking its sneaky little head around in foreboding of bathing suit season.

B

lood Type Dieting First, learn about the diet that is right for your blood type. Check out dadamo.com. This site contains oodles of information about what kind of diet will promote the best results for your blood type, what makes your body flourish based on your DNA, and even detailed traits of each type’s personality. It also highlights news on developments in the science community. It is important to understand that this isn’t necessarily a “diet” per say.

26

the

March 2012

I

t’s more of a lifestyle change, and “diet in the more traditional sense, meaning a way to eat,” Dr. D’Adamo says. Following the diet for your blood type will help you lose weight, but this is because your body will use your caloric intake more efficiently. For instance, blood type A flourishes on a vegetable diet. Omitting red meats and heavy carbohydrates is difficult, but the boost in energy and well-being is worth it.

A

ccording to the website, “For type Bs, the biggest factors in weight gain are corn, wheat, buckwheat, lentils, tomatoes, peanuts and sesame seeds. Each of these foods affects the efficiency of your metabolic process, resulting in fatigue, fluid retention, and hypoglycemia.” Those with Type B blood should also avoid chicken, and exchange it with lamb, rabbit, goat or venison, etc.

I

Interestingly, type Os commonly experience thyroid disorders and ulcers. Dr. D’Adamo suggested staying away from iodine supplements, and instead having a diet that embraces seaweeds and saltwater fish. Also, since it is common for type Os to experience an unsettled stomach and ulcers, Dr. D’Adamo suggests a licorice preparation before eating called DGL (de glycyrrhizinated licorice). A variety of experiments have showed that it soothes uneasy stomachs. Finally, AB blood types take on the characteristics of both A and B types. “Type AB should avoid caffeine and alcohol, especially when you’re in stressful situations. Dr. D’Adamo recommends that Type AB focus on foods such as tofu, seafood, dairy and green vegetables if you are trying to lose weight.” Smaller, more frequent meals are also suggested. This is to counteract a lack of stomach acid. Note that smoked or cured meats can cause people with lower stomach acid to have stomach cancers later on in life. After Considering Blood Type: Tricks of the dieting trade The most important part of dieting for your body type is setting achievable goals. If your longterm goal is to lose 50 pounds, that is amazing, and I applaud you, but you must think on a smaller scale first. Give yourself 8 weeks to lose 10 pounds. (If you are losing more than 3 pounds a week, it is unhealthy, and the weight most likely won’t stay off.) It’s important to notice differences in your body. Without them, people get discouraged and lose sight of their longterm goal. When you’ve obtained small goals, you gain a sense of accomplishment. Don’t think of 5 pounds as 5 of 50; instead, consider the weight you’ve lost in a tangible sense by using comparisons. For instance, think of 5 pounds as losing weight comparable to a sack of potatoes. Achieve those short-term results by following a few health guidelines. The first and most essential part of losing weight is making yourself accountable for the things you eat. Everyone has smart phones nowadays and lucky for all of us, there is a free app called, “Lose It”. Get it. It tailors a plan to your body and goals, allowing you to track the things you eat throughout the day (and the amount of calories they have), scan barcodes, and calculate the amount of calories you burn. Ultimately, it creates a chart of your progress. I guarantee that if you are trying to lose weight and you know that fondue is 1,130 calories, you won’t eat it. For those of you who haven’t explored the new technology, write down what you’re eating. Seeing it in writing will help keep you accountable to yourself. And no one can make you achieve your goal but you. most beneficial for your blood type, and you will get the job done. With a little work and discipline, you’ll be looking fabulous come bathing suit season.

Next, develop a workout plan that you enjoy. It may seem like an oxymoron, but working out is just as important as dieting, and a critical part of getting the results you want. You must make sacrifices. If you aren’t a person who loves the gym or working out in front of others, pick up a copy of Ripped in Thirty by Jillian Michaels. If the workout, which is 24 minutes of high intensity cardio and weight training, doesn’t have you drowning in a pool of your own sweat by the end, something is wrong. I highly recommend this to people who prefer working out at home, or who can’t afford an expensive gym membership. The DVD is $10 at Wal-Mart. You’ll eventually need 3-8 pound weights, which can also be picked up for about $10. You’ll eventually need 3-8 pound weights, which can also be picked up for about $10. If the gym is your thing and you love running on the hamster wheel, make sure you’re switching things up so you avoid hitting a plateau. Do intervals—3 minutes of brisk walking and 1 minute of sprinting—for 20 minutes total. Once that feels easy, walk for 2 minutes and run for 1, or go up hill. You have to make yourself a little uncomfortable for results. If you can be one of those people who chat on the phone while on the elliptical, you need to ramp up the intensity because you aren’t doing enough. What people often forget is the most important part: you must do a full body workout to get full body results. Cardio will slim you down, but will not give you any definition in your body. Weights will give you muscle definition, but will not help your endurance. Dieting will trim down fat, but will not offer any muscular benefits. Don’t get discouraged; all of this doesn’t mean you need to spend 2 hours in the gym each day. Also, make sure to follow dieting for your blood type. This is an important step that would help you shed those stubborn last 10 pounds. Alternating between cardio and resistance training or doing the Michaels’ video. Lastly, make sure you are following the diet that is most beneficial for your blood type, and you will get the job done. With a little work and discipline, you’ll be looking fabulous come bathing suit season.
