New Hermetix silage covers significantly reduce forage waste on Kilkenny dairy farm Making top quality silage is an absolute priority for Co Kilkenny dairy farmer Bill Fitzgerald. The Glenmore man milks 110 cows. The herd has a 40%:60% autumn/ spring calving split. “Making quality forage available is a key driver for the business. And, clearly, this includes the silage fed to the milking group throughout the winter months. The cows are currently averaging just short of 5,500L with an average of 1½t of concentrates fed per head per lactation.” In the past Bill would have made one dedicated cut of silage during the third week of May with bales making up the rest of the farm’s silage requirement. However, last year saw him make a dedicated second cut around the middle of July and this was earmarked for a second silage pit on the farm. “My concern was, because of its exposed location, the silage put into that pit would have been predisposed to crow damage,” said Bill.
“That was our experience in the past and, obviously I didn’t want that happening again. I made a few enquiries and was told that a new, heavier silo cover was available. This would deter the crows and would serve to significantly reduce the level of wastage within the clamp as a whole.” The product which Bill was referring to is the new triple Hermetix 3-layer silage pit cover. “It worked tremendously for us at a number of levels,” he said. “In the first instance, it did a great job in keeping the crows from getting at the silage. Yes, there were a few holes. But only a small fraction of what I had anticipated. “Where the cover remained intact, there was no spoilage within the silage below at all. The cover comprises of a green top Layer, an oxygen barrier in the middle layer, and a black layer next to silage. All product is virgin material. It worked tremendously well in preventing light from penetrating into the pit itself. What I immediately noticed on
opening the silo was the total absence of any discoloured forage at the surface of the clamp.” Bill added: “The other advantage is the fact that I only had to put one cover on the silo last year. Normally we put two in place. So this saved valuable time for everyone concerned. I intend making two full cuts of silage again this year. And the Hermetix covers will be used on both clamps.
“The reduction in forage losses last winter paid for the new cover many times over.” Hermetix is a metalocene film that is lighter and stronger than other conventional silage films. This makes it much easier to handle than standard covers. Both upper and middle layers are fully impervious to light. The end result is better forage preservation, and faster fermentation, while protecting silage from damage by mould, birds and animals. Hermetix silage covers are 60ft wide and available in lengths of 80, 100 and 120ft. They are available in Glanbia stores now.
