Site Analysis At the beginning of this studio, we were tasked with looking at Federation Square and its context. Visiting it multiple times, different conditions were recorded as well as at human scale. The various confined staircases, the large expanses of open spaces, and the large amounts of shadow all contribute to the lack of user engagement. This coupled with the lack of activity away from Federation Square presents some real issues that are to be solved. The next few pages draw upon the analysis that was conducted.
5
The analysis of Northbank looks at the edge condition of the Yarra river. In particular looking at the thresholds between the path and the river. Where the lines blur.

All of these photos show the condition that occurs towards Birrarung Marr. Flat expanses of gravel with a natural edge condition. These areas would be used for festivals and other activities. It is important to look at this and find the connection between all the areas along this river.

Site Visit 24th March On the 24th of March, we went on a site visit to Federation Square where we were lucky enough to have a tour within the Edge Auditorium space as well as the Labyrinth.
13
14
Site Analysis Fed square was opened in 2002 in time to celebrate the centenary of Australia’s federation. However, prior to that it was a morgue, a railway station, a fish market, home to the prince’s gate towers and most importantly, prior to European settlement was home to the Kulin nation – where the Wathaurung, the Bunurong and the Woiworung peoples gathered for tens of thousands of years. It is important for us to have a closer connection to the land. To incorporate more natural elements in order to not only pay respect to the land that we stand on, but also create a more harmonious environment for us beings. The precedents we chose project that vision.

Site Analysis To enter Federation Square, there are a total of 6 stair wells on the north, east and south side of the site, as well as the main entrance (ramp) via the street on the south-western border. Stairwells are confined and tucked away under roofs/between high walls, concealed from view. This gives the feeling of disconnect between Federation Square and the walkways below it. Site would benefit from much more open stair design, similar to the main entrance across from Flinders Station. As demonstrated with elements of Federation Square, stairs aren’t just stairs - they can coexist as seating, observation decks, etc.
Federation Square offers multiple seating options, with geometric shapes protruding out the ground to allow a generous amount of people to use, however the form that is used in Federation Square comes to a halt soon as you descend down the stairs - there’s a complete change in material and seat design. A stronger flow, unison and continuity would be present in this whole precinct had they continued the form and materials heading towards the Yarra. The site would benefit from more uniquely, thought-out designed seating even for the restaurants/cafes.

DISCONNECT Southbank
The Northbank of the Yarra River is a clear juxtaposition to that of the Southbank side. The arrangement of nature and gravel paths heighten the experience of biophilia and provide a connection to place situated next to Birrarung Marr. This however, does not provide a proper connection between Federation square and the Yarra. The long ramp down to the riverbank disconnects the visual connection of the Yarra. The reasons why the Southbank side of the Yarra is successful is due to the orientation, the large expanse between the river and the bank.

Northbank
Firstly, as it is located on the south side of the river and is mostly sheltered by trees to the south, the climate remains relatively stable. It also is a few degrees warmer which would be beneficial for most times of the year with Melbourne weather. The lack of shade however can also demonstrate its issues during the warmer months. From our analysis, the main items to investigate at on the Northbank are: the connection between Federation Square and the River; the arrangement of the bank; interface with the Yarra; and the shelter from the prevailing south-westerly winds.

Site analysis The various materials found across the Federation Square and Northbank creates a rich palette that can be used for future interventions.

Concept Collage The concept aims to be the visual connection needed between Federation Square, Swanston Street and the river. The use of levels similar to that proposed for the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway creates a plane for congregation to occur that can be seen from street level. By doing so, the space automatically has a connection with place, and creates a sense of passive security at night. I want to create an environment that allows for visual connections between places, which will in turn generate more foot-traffic and more interaction with the space. This, in theory, should passively direct people away from Swanston and into this area. A transport hub situated at the edge of the river is also envisaged, further providing additional means for the user to circulate through the space, potentially stopping at the local bars and cafe’s in the space. The riverside hub could be the basis to invigorate the Yarra river and promote river access to all the current precincts located up and down the rivers edge. The riverside quay analogous to N.Y Central Station or Circular Quay in Sydney could become the first stop to direct travelers to Southbank, Riverside Quay, Freshwater Place, South Warth and leading onwards into Docklands. Alternatively upstream destinations could also be explored, I.e. tennis centre, Botanical gardens and potentially on towards Church Street, Chapel street and beyond.

Past student work It was a great oppotunity to have a look at all of the work presented by past students in order to understand and gather ideas that they have had before.

Looking at movement over the site dictates the pathways that need to be created and the leads to the development of the ramp.

Design Iterations
After mid-semester submission, it was necessary to look at the possibility of opening up the vaults allowing light into the lower spaces.

Site Analysis By exploring the conditions of the site and mapping the movement of people, one can establish the different trajectories and the oscillation of people. Other elements such as the wind and the amount of shade also influence movement throughout. The main idea is to bring the essence of the Yarra River to Fed Square rather than bring Fed Square to the river. By doing so, people are able to naturally meander down to the river.

analysis
The varying climate conditions between Southbank and Northbank make the use cases of them very different and determine when each space is activated. The lack of shade on the Southbank side attracts the users during the colder months where sunlight is primary.

Currently, the large expanse of open space remains an issue as it provides little to no protection from the prevailing south-westerly winds. Simply reactivating this area and creating shelter will encourage people to use this space as a thoroughfare and hopefully help people ponder around the river. Southbank does not have the issue due to the elevation changes and tree cover shielding the user from the wind. This is something that will be explored going forward.

Connections One of the main issues that has been identified at the Northbank is the visual connection between the bank and the main landmarks; Federation Square, Swanston St and Birrarung Marr. The lack of a visual connection creates a disconnect between the other areas of Melbourne and can also make the user uneasy. By enhancing its visual connection, the space assumes a relationship with place.

Model This is the early assembly of the model utilizing 3D printing techniques in extruded PLA , 3d laser cutting technology to define the natural terrain and traditional cardboard cutting and gluing to compose the overall concept. Complexity arises in the representation of clear or fenestration as the scale and extent make this unachievable. However, the lack of glass surfacing represented by clear voids adds to the drama of solid and void spaces.
