Friday 31 March – Thursday 13 April Ben Wheatley returns with all guns blazing in a blackly comic shoot-em-up that would make John Carpenter proud. The setting is Boston in 1978 and a deserted warehouse where Provisional IRA members Frank (Michael Smiley) and Chris (Cillian Murphy) arrive to buy enough assault rifles and ammunition to start a small war. Friday 31 March – Thursday 6 April Kim Jee-woon’s nail biting, cloak and dagger thriller is set at the close of the 1920s, during the Japanese occupation of Korea. Police captain Lee Jung-chool (Song Kang-ho) is under pressure to expose members of the Korean resistance. He concentrates on Kim Woo-jin (Gong Yoo) who is secretly plotting to smuggle explosives from Shanghai into Seoul. As Lee’s sympathies edge towards the resistance, the hunter becomes the hunted in a tale of shifting loyalties, betrayal and vengeance. Friday 7 – Thursday 13 April Described by prolific director Pablo Larraín ( The Club, Jackie) as “more of a ‘Nerudian’ film than it is a film about Neruda”; this latest provocative work weaves an exuberantly irreverent fantasy around events in the life of the poet and politician. In the early days of the Cold War, as Chile aligned itself with America, Neruda’s communist convictions saw him branded an enemy of the state and he was obliged to go into hiding. Gormless police inspector Oscar Peluchonneau (Gael Garcia Bernal) is soon on the case in a playful, fantastic-looking film that is as entertainingly constructed as it is surprisingly illuminating. Sat 1 (14.30) & Sun 2 Apr (19.15) Assured young auteur Xavier Dolan returns with his sixth feature, an adaptation of Jean-Luc Lagarce’s play: a claustrophobic family drama about an award-winning dramatist who returns to his hometown after more than a decade away. Revealing to his family that he is dying, Louis (Gaspard Ulliel) ignites a pressure cooker of familial melodrama with each member of the household adding to the histrionics in their own way. Dolan filters the drama through Louis’ own woozy outlook and an ensemble cast that includes Marion Cotillard, Vincent Cassell and Léa Seydoux.

Sunday 2 April (15.45) At the age of 21, Saar Maoz arrived in London after being kicked out of his kibbutz for not being ‘religious’. When the highs of his new found freedom come crashing down around him, Saar seeks solace in the arms of the London Gay Men’s Chorus. Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2016 Berlin Film Festival, Who’s Gonna Love Me Now? celebrates the triumph of love over hate, and of understanding over ignorance. Friday 7 – Thursday 13 April Fifty years after the Civil Rights movement, race remains a defining issue in America. James Baldwin’s final book Remember This House was due to address the lives and assassinations of his friends Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. The unfinished manuscript has been entrusted to director Raoul Peck who uses Baldwin’s powerful words, narrated by Samuel L Jackson, along with a wealth of archive footage to reflect on the legacy of these men and contrast with the present day killings of young African-Americans. Friday 7 – Thursday 13 April A Cannes Critics’ Week prizewinner, Julia Ducournau’s debut feature is a surreal and deliriously twisted coming-of-age story. Attending her first year at veterinarian college, shy vegetarian Justine is forced into eating raw liver as part of a vicious hazing process by older students. However, she soon develops an unhealthy taste for meat that drives her to commit acts of increasing savagery, as unquenched sexual urges turn into an appetite for human flesh. Friday 14 – Sunday 16 April This early feature from Iranian auteur Mohsen Makhmalbaf recounts the story of an anthropology lecturer and his daughter through three distinct periods; the last years of the Shah, the revolution and its painful aftermath. Due to its bold critique of Iranian society, the film was long thought destroyed by Iranian censors, and only in 2016 the surviving elements of the film were screened for the second time ever at Venice Film Festival. A rich and rewarding look at family, lost love and the legacy of violence that has shaped contemporary Iranian society.
