Joe

Friday 25 July – Thursday 7 August Joe is a rugged, no-nonsense man of quiet intensity, a good soul with an unfortunate propensity towards alcohol and violence. Based on the novel by Larry Brown and directed by David Gordon Green (continuing his exploration of wounded masculinity following last year’s Prince Avalanche), this is a film about the underside of Americana – a land both ugly and beautiful, which Nicholas Cage’s Joe fully embodies. One day, a fifteen-year-old drifter named Gary (Tree of Life’s Tye Sheridan) shows up looking for work and soon Joe finds himself looking after the damaged youth. A tough, gripping and often agonising portrayal of masculinity, featuring one of Cage’s best performances.

Local Hero

Sunday 3 August (17.00) Writer/director Bill Forsyth’s third feature is one of the funniest culture-clash comedies in cinema history. Described by its maker as ‘Apocalypse Now meets Brigadoon’, Local Hero both celebrates and subverts a laundry list of Scottish stereotypes. When a materialistic American corporate executive arrives in Scotland with the aim of turning a huge stretch of unspoilt northern coastline into a gigantic petrochemical refinery, the economics of oil go head to head against the enchantment of Highland culture and mythology. A movie warm enough to melt the heart of Donald Trump. Introduced by Dr Jonny Murray, Senior Lecturer in Film and Visual Culture at Edinburgh College of Art, who will explore the film’s comic subversion of a wide range of well-worn Scottish stereotypes. Director Bill Forsyth Cast Burt Lancaster, Peter Riegert, Fulton Mackay, Peter Capaldi, UK 1983, 1h49m, some subtitles, PG

The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil

Sunday 10 August (17.00) A dazzling (and enduring topical) reminder that politics can be entertaining – and entertainment can be political. Capitalising on the remarkable popular success of playwright John McGrath’s touring production of the same name, this 1974 television film surveys two centuries of Scottish history from the Battle of Culloden to the coming of North Sea oil. Questions about a small nation’s ability to resist wholesale exploitation at the hands of multinational capital and age-old seats of political privilege have rarely been asked with such passion, historical insight and dramatic skill. Followed by a panel discussion examining the film’s portrayal of the exploitation of Scottish people. Director John Mackenzie, Cast John Bett, David MacLennan, Dolina MacLennan, UK 1974, some subtitles, 1h30m, N/C 12+

Trainspotting

Sunday 17 August (17.00) The film that made an entire generation of local cinemagoers dare to think it was all right to be Scottish. A motley crew of junkies trade heroin and low blows in Irvine Welsh’s exuberant memoir of 1980s and early 1990s drug culture in working-class Edinburgh. Rarely can one movie have launched so many top-flight filmmaking careers: some twenty years on, Trainspotting remains a notable high point on the cinematic CVs of director Danny Boyle and actors Robert Carlyle, Kelly Macdonald, Ewan McGregor and Kevin McKidd.

Introduced by Dr Jonny Murray, Senior Lecturer in Film and Visual Culture at Edinburgh College of Art, who will explore the film’s assertion that ‘It’s sh*** being Scottish’. Director Danny Boyle Cast Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, UK 1996, 1h30m, 18

Your Cheatin’ Heart

Sunday 24 August (13.00–19.30, including intervals) Tickets £10 / £8 concessions

Hardly seen since its first (and to date, only) television broadcast in 1990, and still commercially unavailable on DVD, writer John Byrne’s six-part followup to the much-lauded Tutti Frutti (1987) is the great lost treasure in the history of Scottish television drama. Tilda Swinton, Eddie Reader, Ken Stott and John Gordon Sinclair star in an acutely observed tale of love and criminality in Country-and-Western-obsessed Glasgow, a Western frontier town overrun by Johnstone (as opposed to rhinestone) cowboys. Director John Byrne Cast John Gordon Sinclair, Tilda Swinton, Ken Stott, UK 1990, 50m, N/C 12+

From Scotland with Love Sunday 31 August (17.00)

Made entirely of Scottish film archive, From Scotland with Love is a feature film by award-winning director Virginia Heath with a transcendent score by Scottish musician and composer King Creosote. A journey into our collective past, the film explores universal themes of love, loss, resistance, migration, work and play. Ordinary people, some long since dead, their names and identities largely forgotten, appear shimmering from the depth of the vaults to take a starring role. Brilliantly edited together, these silent individuals become composite characters, who emerge to tell us their stories, given voice by King Creosote’s poetic music and lyrics. Followed by a Q&A with director Virginia Heath and composer King Creosote, with King Creosote also playing a couple of tunes live from the film’s soundtrack. Director Virginia Heath Music King Creosote, UK 2014, 1h15m, suggested rating: N/C 8+

Bolshoi: Swan Lake

Live: Sunday 25 January 2015 (15.00) £20 full price / £15 conc / £13 Cinecard

On Christmas Eve, Marie’s magician godfather gives her a nutcracker carved in the shape of a man. In the second act of Tchaikovsky’s enduringly popular festive ballet, Marie and Drosselmeyer’s nephew are whisked off to the Land of the Sweets. Here they meet the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince, who entertain the duo with their dances. Based on E T A Hoffmann’s story, The Nutcracker continues to enchant audiences young and old. This superlative version was choreographed by former Bolshoi Artistic Director Yuri Grigorovich and is magnificently interpreted by the company’s dancers.

White swan by day, human by night, the beautiful Odette awaits an oath of true love to break the curse. The great legend of the enigmatic woman/swan is one of the most romantic classical ballets, appropriately set in the era of courtly romance and characterised by elegance, style and harmony. With Tchaikovsky’s famous, lyrical score, Swan Lake depicts the tragic love between Princess Odette and Prince Siegfried, and will no doubt be performed to perfection by the unparalleled virtuosity of Russia’s great Bolshoi Ballet. This universal and enchanting masterpiece of love, deception and drama is a must.

Love’s Labour’s Lost

Love’s Labour’s Won

As part of a season marking the centenary of the First World War, Christopher Luscombe returns to the Royal Shakespeare Company to direct a fresh pairing of two of Shakespeare’s most sparkling comedies, set in a splendid country house just before and just after the war. In Love’s Labour’s Lost, the mischievous Rosaline tests Berowne’s resolve in the summer of 1914. However, the merriment is curtailed when the lovers agree to part, unaware the world is about to be transformed by war.

Love’s Labour’s Won begins four years after Love’s Labour’s Lost with a world-weary Benedick and Claudio returning from the trenches to a post-war house party, where Claudio falls in love with Hero and Benedick reignites his altogether more combative courtship with Beatrice. Youthful passions run riot before peace ultimately breaks out. Usually known as Much Ado About Nothing, this RSC production welcomes the return of Edward Bennett and Michelle Terry, who will play the lovers in both plays.
