My parents watched movies there when Attlee was Prime Minister and I take my children there now. I love that it’s modernising and expanding and yet still retains a look that evokes the Golden Age of Hollywood. It’s pretty much my favourite cinema in the world and in a cultured city brimming with cinephiles is just irreplaceable.” Mark Millar Comic Book Writer and Film Producer

Eddie the Eagle
Friday 1 – Thursday 14 April Eddie Edwards did not have the background to become an Olympian. Near-sighted, accidentprone and from a poor family, he was constantly reminded that he did not have the right qualities for an international athlete. Yet, through dogged perseverance he became the first competitor to represent Great Britain in Olympic ski jumping at the 1988 Calgary Winter Games. Sunshine on Leith director Dexter Fletcher’s adaptation of his inspirational story features a charming lead performance from Taron Egerton, and a hilarious turn from Hugh Jackman as the disgraced former Olympian who teaches Eddie to soar like an eagle. Director Dexter Fletcher Cast Taron Egerton, Hugh Jackman, Christopher Walken, UK/USA/Germany 2016, 1h46m, PG

Black Mountain Poets
Friday 1 – Thursday 7 April One shot, two hours, total triumph ***** - Nigel M Smith, The Guardian Filmed continuously over the course of one evening in 22 locations, writer/director Sebastian Schipper’s latest is a remarkable achievement of form and substance. Beginning in a Berlin nightclub, the camera fixes on a young woman named Victoria, following her as she leaves the club and encounters a group of young men who entice her to continue the party. From there, the plot spirals in unexpected directions as apparently random events slowly coalesce in a dark and powerful tour-de-force.
Friday 1 – Monday 4 April Lisa and Claire are con artist sisters on the run. After a plot to steal a JCB goes wrong they seek refuge at a poetry retreat in the Black Mountains of Wales. Assuming the identity of internationally renowned poets ‘The Wilding Sisters’, the poetically-challenged duo find themselves hopelessly adrift in a world of astute wordsmiths whilst duelling for the affections of Richard (Downton Abbey’s Tom Cullen), a talented and handsome poet attending the retreat with his jealous wife. A hilarious improv-based farce from director Jamie Adams (Benny & Jolene), this story is has wit and heart.
Director Sebastian Schipper Cast Laia Costa, Frederick Lau, Franz Rogowski, Germany 2015, 2h18m, subtitles, 15
Director Jamie Adams Cast Alice Lowe, Dolly Wells, Tom Cullen, UK 2015, 1h25m, 15

Ran
Friday 1 – Thursday 7 April A stunning 4K digital restoration of Akira Kurosawa’s incomparible adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear. When Japanese warlord Hidetora Ichimonji abdicates the throne, he divides his kingdom between his three sons. However, greed soon besets his two eldest sons and it is not long before the united empire is divided in war. Large-scale, painterly vistas and Kurosawa’s bold use of colour and widescreen cinematography make this an unmissable treat for the big screen. GFT is also screening Kurosawa’s Macbeth adaptation Throne of Blood (Sun 17 & Mon 18 April) alongside other Shakespeare titles, see page 21 for further details. Specially commissioned programme notes will be available. Director Akira Kurosawa Cast Tatsuya Nakadai, Akira Terao, Jinpachi Nezu, Japan/France 1985, 2h40m, subtitles, 12A: contains moderate bloody violence
The Here After Efterskalv
Monday 4 – Thursday 7 April Returning to his home in a small Swedish town after serving two years in juvenile detention, John is looking forward to starting a new life. However, the close-knit townsfolk who make up the local community are not able to look past the terrible crime he committed, and slowly a lynch-mob atmosphere begins to take shape. Lead actor Ulrik Munther plays John as both childlike and cruel, caught in a cycle of aggression and unable to leave the past behind. Director Magnus von Horn Cast Ulrik Munther, Mats Blomgren, Stefan Cronwall, Sweden/Poland 2015, 1h42m, subtitles, 15
Court
Tuesday 5 – Thursday 7 April The flaws of the Indian legal system are laid bare in this striking absurdist drama about the trial of a 65-year-old folk singer accused of inciting the suicide of a sewage worker. Although the trial of Narayan Kamble provides the narrative context, the personal lives of his lawyer, the judge assigned to the case, and the public prosecutor also come under scrutiny as the trial slowly unfolds. The debut of writer-director Chaitanya Tamhane, Court explores the cogs in the legal machine, revealing a bizarre system terrifyingly fuelled by incompetence, indifference and social inequality. Director Chaitanya Tamhane Cast Vira Sathidar, Usha Bane, Pradeep Joshi, India 2015, 1h56m, subtitles, PG

Couple in a Hole
Friday 8 – Saturday 16 April Deep in the middle of a French forest, an apparently normal and affluent Scottish couple exist like savages, foraging for food and shunning modern conveniences. The mysteries of who they are and how they came to be there drive this powerful yet understated drama, as the full psychological and literal meanings of the title are explored. Scottish actors Kate Dickie and Paul Higgins throw themselves into their challenging roles with gusto, delivering performances that stagger with their authenticity and subtlety, and the result is a haunting examination of loss and grief. Director Tom Geens Cast Paul Higgins, Kate Dickie, Jérôme Kircher, UK/Belgium/France 2015, 1h45m, subtitles, 15
I Am Belfast
Monday 11 – Thursday 14 April As a director, Mark Cousins has captured everything from the history of film to the desires of D H Lawrence. Now he ventures back home with a portrait of his native Belfast, depicted here as a copper-haired woman (Helena Bereen) who has survived times of violence, despair and elation. Cousins’ playful dialogue with her unfolds around archive footage, interviews and images, finding great beauty in the familiar and mundane. Cousins doesn’t avoid the bitter conflicts of the past, but travels beyond the divisions to find humanity, hope and the indomitable spirit of the city. A love letter straight from the heart. Director Mark Cousins, UK 2015, 1h24m, 15

Adapted from a manga, the story revolves around three adult sisters who live together in the house once belonging to their grandmother. When their absentee father dies they are introduced to Suzu, a 13-year-old half-sister they never knew of. Deciding to become the child’s guardians, the sisters find their lives changed in unexpected ways. An engaging story that demonstrates Kore-eda at his most effortlessly charming. Dheepan
Friday 8 – Thursday 21 April This immensely powerful Palme d’Or winner from director Jacques Audiard (Rust and Bone) couldn’t be more topical or involving. Ex-Tamil Tiger Dheepan, played by real life former-Tiger child soldier Antonythasan Jesuthasan, flees Sri Lanka for Thailand and then France, having created a fake family with fellow lost souls Yalini (Kalieaswari Srinivasan) and nine-year-old Illayaal (Claudine Vinasithamby) to win the sympathy of the authorities. They find themselves washed up on a Parisian housing project, a wild frontier place of drug-dealing, gun-toting gangs and ordinary people trying to survive with dignity, where all three discover that the past is never easy to escape. Specially commissioned programme notes will be available. Director Jacques Audiard Cast Antonythasan Jesuthasan, Kalieaswari Srinivasan, Claudine Vinasithamby, France 2015, 1h55m, subtitles, 15

Eisenstein in Guanajuato
Friday 15 – Thursday 21 April When an ex-cop commits suicide, detectives Mørck (The Killing’s Nikolaj Lie Kaas) and Assad decide to delve into a 20-year-old cold case that involved the double murder of the former officer’s two children. At first failing to turn up the scantest of leads, the duo’s investigations soon take them to one of the country’s most upscale boarding schools. A taught noir-tinged tale of twisted secrets and grim surprises, from director Mikkel Nørgaard (Klovn, The Keeper of Lost Causes).
Monday 18 – Thursday 21 April Peter Greenaway subverts the stodgy conventions of the biopic with swashbuckling irreverence in this restless, inventive reflection on filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein’s life-changing visit to Mexico in 1931. We encounter the director of Battleship Potemkin as he travels south to start work on his ill-fated epic Que Viva Mexico, having spent two long, frustrating years in Hollywood. He is instantly smitten by the country, and by his handsome Mexican guide Palomino Cañedo (Luis Alberti).

Friday 15 – Thursday 21 April It may have escaped your attention but God (Benoît Poelvoorde) is alive and well, and living in Brussels with his wife (Yolande Moreau) and their ten-year-old daughter Ea (Pili Groyne). Time has made the Almighty cruel and capricious, so Ea retaliates by writing a brand new testament, performing a few minor miracles and texting everyone on the planet with the exact day and time of their deaths. Nominated for the Golden Globe as one of the year’s Best Foreign Language Films, Jaco Van Dormael’s satire on the absurdity of organised religion is as stylishly executed as it is wittily conceived. Director Jaco Van Dormael Cast Benoît Poelvoorde, Catherine Deneuve, Yolande Moreau, Belgium/France 2015, 1h53m, subtitles, 15
Louder Than Bombs
Nasty Baby
Friday 22 – Thursday 28 April Joachim Trier’s English-language debut is a beautifully-crafted exploration of family ties and the way we never entirely know those closest to us. Three years after her death, prize-winning photographer Isabelle (Isabelle Huppert) is the subject of a New York Times profile and a major exhibition. Her eldest son Jonah (Jesse Eisenberg) returns to the family home where his father Gene (Gabriel Byrne) and younger brother Conrad (Devin Druid) still live. What will it take for the three men to honestly face up to the past and make sense of the secrets and lies that have defined their family life for far too long? Watch Joachim Trier’s GFF interview at bit.ly/GFT-Bombs
Friday 22 – Sunday 24 April Chilean director Sebastián Silva (The Maid, Magic Magic) takes a starring role in his latest film, an offkilter New York tale about a close-knit trio who attempt to bring a new life into a world they barely understand. Freddy and Mo are a comfortable Brooklynite couple who enlist their friend Polly (Kristen Wiig) to be the surrogate mother for their child. But getting Polly pregnant is not as simple as they hoped, and the couple also face Mo’s conservative parents, Freddy’s struggles with his first major gallery exhibition, and their increasingly disruptive neighbour. A compellingly modern film that serves up an audacious turn in its final act.

Director Sebastián Silva Cast Sebastián Silva, Tunde Adebimpe, Kristen Wiig, USA/Chile 2014, 1h41m, some subtitles, 15

Director Gavin O’Connor Cast Natalie Portman, Joel Edgerton, Ewan McGregor, USA 2015, 1h38m, 15
Arabian Nights Vol 1: The Restless One
Arabian Nights Vol 2: The Desolate One
Friday 22 – Thursday 28 April Miguel Gomes’ three-part epic Arabian Nights is a vastly ambitious, hugely exuberant fresco in which he attempts to address the problems of modern Portugal using the structure of Scheherazade’s ‘One Thousand and One Nights’. It begins as Gomes struggles to justify making such an extravagant film in a time of austerity. What follows are real-life tales of hardship, poverty and addiction, juxtaposed with colourful yarns of cunning wasps, exploding whales, overexcited politicians and a talking cockerel. Specially commissioned programme notes will be available.
From Friday 29 April The second volume of Miguel Gomes’ epic is the most heartrending. Dark, disturbing themes of inequality, poverty and history repeating are addressed in the jauntiest fashion. In ‘Chronicle of the Escape of Simão’, a mass murderer becomes a local legend. In the hilarious ‘The Tears of a Judge’, we find a stern magistrate presiding over a succession of absurdist court cases. Finally, ‘The Owners of Dixie’ follows a loyal poodle as it is shuttled between owners in a concrete apartment block wreathed in cigarette smoke and despair. Specially commissioned programme notes will be available.
Director Miguel Gomes Cast Crista Alfaiate, Adriano Luz, Américo Silva, Portugal/France/Germany 2015, 2h5m, subtitles, 15

Miles Ahead
Friday 22 – Thursday 28 April A passion project for multi-talented actor/director Don Cheadle, Miles Ahead strays from conventional ‘biopic’ territory to compose a layered, impressionistic portrait of jazz legend Miles Davis. Cheadle plays Davis and captures his physical look and swaggering attitude to perfection. The film’s core is set in the 1970s with Davis drifting through drug use, medical problems and creative inertia. Journalist Dave Braden (Ewan McGregor) arrives at his door, claiming to be from Rolling Stone to discuss a big comeback that Miles knows nothing of. So begins a freewheeling ‘bitches brew’ of a journey through aspects of Davis’ life and loves, self-destructive urges and creative genius. Director Don Cheadle Cast Don Cheadle, Ewan McGregor, Michael Stuhlbarg, USA 2015, 1h40m, 15
The Grump
Monday 25 – Thursday 28 April The Grump (Antti Litja) is a stubborn, sourfaced curmudgeon happily attached to a rosy-eyed vision of the past. Incapacitated by a fall, the old devil moves from the family farm to the city home of his exasperated daughter-inlaw. Every conversation is a battlefield, any newfangled invention defeats him. Then it starts to become apparent that the old fellow could still teach the modern world a few tricks and the film moves from a playful, chalk and cheese comedy into something much more poignant. Director Dome Karukoski Cast Antti Litja, Petra Frey, Mari Perankoski, Finland 2014, 1h44m, subtitles, 12A: infrequent strong language

Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures
Friday 29 April – Monday 2 May Robert Mapplethorpe was a controversial figure; his bold, unflinching and often graphic photography captured the late 20th Century New York underground at its most daring, pushing boundaries and breaking taboos. Using a 2016 retrospective as a springboard, this film recounts Mapplethorpe’s life, from his Catholic upbringing to his time with Patti Smith at the Chelsea Hotel and his growing interest in the New York BDSM scene. Rediscovered interviews and revelations from family and friends shed light on Mapplethorpe’s legacy and wider notions of decency. Directors Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato, USA/Germany 2016, 1h48m, 18

Son of Saul
Sunday 10 April & from Friday 29 April Winner of Best Foreign Language Film at this year’s Oscars, László Nemes’ astonishingly assured debut feature breaks from traditional depictions of the Holocaust in cinema. Saul Ausländer, a prisoner of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1944, is tasked with burning the corpses of his own people. However, when he finds the body of a boy he believes to be his son, he tries to save the remains in order to give the child a proper Jewish burial. A devastating portrait of life in a concentration camp, Nemes eschews the wider historical narrative in favour of maintaining a close-up, subjective portrayal of a single man’s experiences. The Sunday 10 April (19.30) preview will be screened on 35mm and preceded by László Nemes’ breakthrough short film With a Little Patience (Hungary 2007, 14m). Specially commissioned programme notes will be available. Director László Nemes Cast Géza Röhrig, Levente Molnár, Urs Rechn, Hungary 2015, 1h47m, subtitles, 15

Davis’ letters catch the attention of customer service rep Karen (Naomi Watts) and the two form an unlikely connection. With the help of Karen and her son Chris (newcomer Judah Lewis), Davis starts to rebuild, beginning with the demolition of the life he once knew. Carmina and Amen Carmina y amén
Wednesday 13 April (20.15) After the sudden death of her husband, a working-class family matriarch convinces her daughter to conceal her father’s passing for two days, until she receives the bonus he was due. Fans of The Royle Family or Shameless are bound to appreciate its wickedly comic use of Spanish class and region stereotypes, from the ostentatious Catholic to the wacky non-conformist Catalan. Peppered with inspired wit and deliriously surreal moments, this film is a delight to watch. Director Paco León Cast Carmina Barrios, Paco Casaus, María León, Spain 2014, 1h33m, subtitles, N/C 15+
To Kill a Man Matar a un hombre
Wednesday 20 April (20.50) Winner of the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2014, and based on real events, this psychological thriller is a portrait of an ordinary man driven to murder in defence of his family. With a masterfully restrained and non-sensationalist style, the film makes excellent use of both music and silence to build tension as we follow the humiliation of the protagonist step by step, and are confronted with our own fears in the process. A compelling tale of vigilante revenge. Director Alejandro Fernández Almendras Cast Daniel Candia, Alejandra Yañez, Daniel Antivilo, Spain/France 2014, 1h22m, subtitles, N/C 15+

SWG3 Presents:
Herostratus
Sunday 17 April (19.00) A lost gem of British avant-garde cinema, Herostratus was years ahead of its time upon its release in 1967. It depicts with bold and vivid imagination the collapse of 60s idealism into the rampant individualism of today, through the story of a young poet who sells his own suicide to a marketing firm as a mass media spectacle. More direct than Debord, more technically adventurous than Godard, Don Levy’s Herostratus transgresses the rules of cinema in a way which still feels audacious almost fifty years on. This screening is delivered as part of the exhibition Don Levy: Time Regained, curated by Alexander Storey Gordon at SWG3 as part of Glasgow International 2016, and will be accompanied by an introduction and programme note. Director Don Levy Cast Michael Gothard, Gabriella Licudi, Peter Stephens, UK 1967, 2h23m, 15

Pain Is...
Sunday 1 May (20.00) Pain Is... combines interviews, archival footage and director Stephen Dwoskin’s thoughtful voice-over to arrive at a scrupulous anatomy of pain (encompassing disease, dental work and sadomasochism). The interviews range from those who suffer from chronic pain to those who find pleasure in wilfully inflicting pain. Dwoskin doesn’t belabour the distinction, choosing instead to search for underlying meanings. Without getting into tortured semiotics, he examines the language of pain and wonders if it is possible ‘to make an image of pain’. Director Stephen Dwoskin, UK 1997, 1h20m, N/C 18+
