Isle of Dogs

Friday 30 March - Thursday 19 April Visionary director Wes Anderson returns with an all-star stop-motion animated feature that is destined to win your heart. Set in a dystopian future Japan, an outbreak of “canine flu” has led to all dogs being quarantined on Trash Island, an exile colony. 12-year-old Atari Kobayashi (Koyu Rankin) defies the authorities to embark on a daring rescue mission to the island to save his beloved dog Spots (Liev Schreiber). He is soon face to face with five local dogs eager for adventure and determined to protect and serve Atari on his noble quest. GFF18 Opening Gala. These screenings will be preceded by the DepicT! award winning short film Winnow by director George Lewis (UK, 2m). Journeyman

Psycho Vertical

Friday 30 & Saturday 31 March Based on his best-selling autobiography of the same name, Psycho Vertical is a raw and emotional study of the complex life and motivations of British writer, funny-man and unlikely hero-mountaineer, Andy Kirkpatrick. The film focuses on his 18-day solo ascent of El Capitan, Yosemite. This unique, raw and intimate portrait of one of climbing’s most unpredictable and celebrated figures explores how our past shapes us, drives us forward, and stays with us all our lives. Preceded by the British Mountaineering Council’s award-winning short film The Bothy Project (dir. Jen Radall, 2015, 11m). Director Jen Randall, UK 2017, 1h4m, N/C 15+

After winning a punishing title defence on points, Matty collapses at home. The true battle then begins, as he fights to regain his speech, movement, personality and memory. Preview: Sunday 1 April (16.00) | Friday 6 - Thursday 12 April Revisiting elements of his own experience, Robin Campillo has created a bustling fresco of the personalities and politics of the ACT UP Paris LGBTQI community during the 1990s. The sense of urgency, authenticity and attention to detail is exemplary as individual stories come into sharper focus. We follow hot-headed Sean (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart) as he falls under the spell of gravely handsome newcomer Nathan (Arnaud Valois). A moving, lump-in-the-throat love story is matched by a celebration of the power of activism to awaken an indifferent world in this superb drama. GFF18 The preview screening on Sun 1 Apr will be followed by a panel discussion, led by Helen Wright (SQIFF). Director Robin Campillo Cast Arnaud Valois, Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, Adèle Haenel,
France 2017, subtitles, 2h24m, 15

Have a Nice Day Hao jile

Monday 2 - Thursday 5 April A hard rain is about to fall on a small town in Southern China. In a desperate attempt to find money to save his fiancée’s failed plastic surgery, Xiao Zhang, a mere driver, steals a bag containing 1 million from his boss. News of the robbery spreads fast within the town and, over the course of one night, everyone starts looking for Xiao and his money in this whirlwind neo-noir. With meticulous line-work and muted solid colours, Liu Jian’s second feature is a pioneering slice of independent Chinese animation. Specially commissioned programme notes will be available. The Mon 2 April (18.15) screening will be introduced by Alistair Harkness as part of the Contemporary Cinema Course.

My Golden Days Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse Friday 30 March - Monday 2 April Mathieu Amalric reprises the everyman hero role of Paul Dédalus from My Sex Life…Or How I Got Into an Argument. Preparing to leave Tajikistan, Paul reflects on his early years; his childhood, his mother’s madness, his first trip to USSR and the love of his life. A shimmering and aching coming of age tale that also acts as a mature essay on love and memory. With echoes of French New Wave, particularly in his explorations of young love and memory, Arnaud Desplechin once again shows why he is one of the most individual directors working in France today. Director Arnaud Desplechin Cast Quentin Dolmaire, Lou Roy-Lecollinet, Mathieu Amalric, France 2015, 2h3m, 15

Director Liu Jian Cast Zhu Changlong, Cao Kai, Liu Jian China 2017, Mandarin with English subtitles, 1h27m, 15

Wonderstruck

Friday 6 - Thursday 12 April Todd Haynes brings all his imagination and craft to bear on this enthralling adaptation of the children’s novel by Brian Selznick. In 1977, lonely 12-year-old Ben (Oakes Fegley) leaves Minnesota for New York in search of the father he has never known. In 1927, 12-year-old Rose (Millicent Simmonds) a deaf girl who is unhappy also heads to New York, seeking a glimpse of her favourite movie star Lillian Mayhew (Julianne Moore). Deftly interweaving two stories and two very different styles, Haynes creates a sweet, whimsical fable filled with warmth and charm. GFF18 Director Todd Haynes Cast Julianne Moore, Oakes Fegley, Millicent Simmonds, USA 2017, 1h57m, PG

Shiraz: A Romance of India

The Islands and the Whales

Tuesday 3 April (18.30) In their remote home in the North Atlantic, the Faroe Islanders have always eaten what nature could provide; hunting whales and seabirds. But today, it is not the controversy surrounding whaling that threatens the Faroese way of life; the danger is coming from the whales themselves. Their beloved whales are toxic, contaminated by the outside world. What once secured their survival now endangers their children, and the Faroe Islanders must make a choice between health and tradition. This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Mike Day.

Wednesday 4 & Thursday 5 April Based on the romance between 17th-century Mughal ruler Shah Jahan and his queen, this epic silent film is the ravishing, romantic tale behind the creation of one of the world’s most iconic structures: the Taj Mahal. The film is the story of humble potter Shiraz, who follows his childhood sweetheart Selima when slave traders sell her to the future emperor. Shot entirely on location in India, it features lavish costumes and gorgeous settings – all the more impressive in this restoration that features a specially commissioned score by the Grammy Award-winning Anoushka Shankar.

Director Mike Day, UK/Denmark 2016, 1h24m, 12A: scenes of whale hunting

Director Franz Osten Cast Himansu Rai, Enakshi Rama Rau, Charu Roy, UK/Germany/India 1928, 1h45m, U

GLASGOW FILM FESTIVAL 2018

Custody Jusqu'à la garde

Friday 13 - Thursday 26 April Xavier Legrand won the Glasgow Film Festival Audience Award for this, his debut feature: a tense, gripping depiction of the fallout from a bitter custody battle. Miriam (Léa Drucker) has left her husband Antoine (Denis Ménochet) and is now seeking sole custody of their son Julien (Thomas Gioria). Both sides seem to be hiding something, and with accusations of violence, the judge must decide whether or not to give a seemingly repentant Antoine the benefit of the doubt. Her decision marks the beginning of a brilliantly acted, tautly handled drama in which Legrand calmly escalates the tension towards breaking point. GFF18 Specially commissioned programme notes will be available. The Mon 16 April (17.50) screening will be introduced by Alistair Harkness as part of the Contemporary Cinema Course. CINEMASTERS: WES ANDERSON

Wes Anderson is a singular filmmaker; his precise vision, detached humour and particular style are unmistakable. One viewing arguably isn’t enough to take in everything contained across the many layers of his intricately-constructed stories, and their idiosyncratic characters. As his new film Isle of Dogs goes on general release, we are delighted to take the opportunity to revisit five of his earlier works. Join us on a tour of Wes’ world. Specially commissioned programme notes will be available.

Rushmore

Tuesday 10 April (20.50) Wes Anderson’s breakthrough sophomore feature stars Jason Schwartzman as Max Fischer, an eccentric 15-year-old student at Rushmore Academy, who, despite seeing himself as the king of the campus by engaging in a plethora of extracurricular activity, is also one of the least scholarly students at the school. Max’s life changes when he finds himself both on academic probation and in love with elementary teacher Miss Cross, at odds with wealthy industrialist Herman Blume. When released in 1998, the winning performances, witty script and fantastic soundtrack marked Anderson as one of the most distinct voices of his generation. All tickets £6. Director Wes Anderson Cast Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Olivia Williams, USA 1998, 1h33m, 15

Take 2: Fantastic Mr Fox

Saturday 14 April (11.30) Based on Roald Dahl's classic book, Wes Anderson’s film is full of deadpan banter and clever silliness. After 12 years of bucolic bliss, urbane Mr Fox, breaks a promise to his wife and returns to his farm raiding ways. Giving in to his animal instincts endangers not only his marriage but also the lives of his family and their animal friends. When the human farmers force Mr Fox and company deep underground, he has to resort to his natural craftiness to rise above the opposition and use all of his wiles to survive the farmers’ retaliation. All tickets £5.50. Director Wes Anderson Cast George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, USA 2009, some subtitles, 1h27m, PG

The Royal Tenenbaums

Tuesday 17 April (20.15) Royal Tenenbaum and his wife Etheline had three children; Chas, Richie and Margot, and then they separated. Chas started buying real estate in his early teens and had an almost preternatural understanding of international finance. Margot was a playwright and received a grant of fifty thousand dollars in the ninth grade. Richie was a junior champion tennis player and won the U.S. Nationals three years in a row. Virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums was subsequently erased by two decades of betrayal, failure and disaster. This is the story of their unexpected reunion one winter. Director Wes Anderson Cast Gene Hackman, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, USA 2001, 1h50m, 15

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Tuesday 24 April (20.20) Internationally famous oceanographer Steve Zissou and his crew (Team Zissou) set sail on an expedition to hunt down the mysterious, elusive, possibly non-existent Jaguar Shark that killed Zissou's partner during the documentary filming of their latest adventure. They are joined on their voyage by a young airline co-pilot who may or may not be Zissou's son, a beautiful journalist assigned to write a profile of Zissou, and Zissou's estranged wife and co-producer Eleanor. One of Anderson’s most fanciful and iconic films, combining stop-motion and life action, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou demonstrates once again his aptitude at handling ensemble casts.
