DID YOU MISS

Bridge of Spies

Sunday 27 – Wednesday 30 December The fourth collaboration between legendary director Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks is a subtle Cold War thriller, scripted by the Coen Brothers, that owes a strong debt to classics of the genre. Hanks plays James Donovan, a lawyer from New York who must negotiate the release of a captured American pilot, a task that finds him thrust into the centre of the Cold War. Spielberg and Hanks ably balance a raw sense of sentimentality and justice mixed with the cold edge of John le Carré-style paranoia. Director Steven Spielberg Cast Tom Hanks, Amy Ryan, Mark Rylance, USA 2015, 2h21m, 12A contains infrequent strong language, moderate threat and violence

My Nazi Legacy

Sunday 27 – Wednesday 30 December While researching international law, human rights lawyer Philipe Sands came across Horst von Wächter and Niklas Frank, two men whose fathers were advisers to Adolf Hitler, and were later indicted as war criminals for their roles. Support GFT – A Brighter Future

The proposed new GFT Foyer and butterfly staircase

It’s the audience that brings the buzz, atmosphere and energy to any arts organisation, and we’re determined to make sure that GFT is open to as many people as possible. As a registered charity and listed building, we depend on the generosity and support of loyal audiences to continue our work. In 2012, we began fundraising to build Cinema 3 and improve access to GFT for people of all ages, backgrounds, communities and abilities. In 2013 we opened our award-winning third screen and created a new accessible entrance lobby and box office. In 2016 we want to finish what we started: install a second accessible lift, complete the refurbishment of the foyer, bars and education suite, and bring back the grandeur of a butterfly stairwell in the foyer, evoking the Cosmo, GFT’s legendary predecessor. This will secure GFT’s future for generations to come. The entire project will cost £3 million, and we’re over 90% of the way to reaching that target. Crossing the Line

Rachel Maclean: Feed Me

Sunday 17 January (20.40) Margaret Tait Award winner Rachel Maclean’s latest film is a parable of the pleasures and perils of indulgence, and a wicked, waspish skit on a world where greed is good. The film is a provocative exploration of the commercialisation (and sexualisation) of childhood, and a corresponding infantilism in adults. A delirious confection of multi-layered images, made more extravagant by the artist’s trademark multi-character theatrics, this is Maclean’s most ambitious film to date. Filmmaker Rachel Maclean will attend the screening to take part in a Q&A.
