Deliverance
Sunday 5 July (19.00) A river-rafting trip in the great American backcountry goes dangerously wrong in John Boorman’s gruelling psychological thriller. Outdoor fanatic Lewis Medlock (Burt Reynolds) is determined to see the Cahulawassee River before it is turned into one huge lake and convinces his fellow businessman friends Ed Gentry (Jon Voight), Bobby Trippe (Ned Beatty) and Drew Ballinger (Ronny Cox) to join him on the adventure. A primal story that undercuts its apparently machismo message by reminding the audience that sometimes people are the biggest threats of all. Director John Boorman Cast Burt Reynolds, Jon Voight, Ned Beatty, USA 1972, 1h44m, 18

The Fog
Friday 17 July (23.00) The modern master of Stephen King adaptations, Frank Darabont, delivered his third King movie after The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile with this hugely effective creature feature. As a disparate group take shelter inside a supermarket when an unearthly mist rolls in, the fear and paranoia growing inside the store is nothing compared to what might be lurking in the mist’s impenetrable depths. Darabont gives us characters to care deeply about and encounters to chill our blood, frequently bettering King’s novella and building the tension expertly all the way to an unforgettable climax. Introduced by Robert Florence
Friday 21 August (23.00) John Carpenter made The Fog at the peak of his powers, two years after Halloween and a couple of years before The Thing, redrafting scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis as part of his gallery of townsfolk spooked by the arrival of a mysterious fog bank. Adrienne Barbeau is a sultry DJ in the quiet California town of Antonio Bay, which gets a rude awakening when its shady past (not to mention undead lepers) comes back to haunt it on the night of the town’s centenary. Told with the precise mechanics of a great ghost story, this is a beautifully constructed shocker with atmosphere to burn. Introduced by Greg Hemphill
Director Frank Darabont Cast Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden, USA 2007, 2h6m, 15
Director John Carpenter Cast Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Janet Leigh, USA 1980, 1h26m, 15

Die Hard with a Vengeance
Tuesday 4 August (20.00) The second film in the Die Hard franchise tried to recapture the claustrophobic magic of the original, but this third film twists the premise on its head. A mysterious new terrorist emerges during a sweltering summer heatwave to force NYPD officer Lt. John McClane into a life-threatening, citywide game of Simon Says. Original Die Hard director John McTiernan returned to the franchise (with a vengeance) to offer arguably the last great outing for Bruce Willis as McClane. Screening on 35mm. Director John McTiernan Cast, Bruce Willis, Samuel L Jackson, Jeremy Irons, USA 1995, 2h9m, 15

Tuesday 11 August (20.00) What would a summer movie season be without an outing for the original summer blockbuster? Steven Spielberg’s 1975 shark saga transformed his career and set the standard for Hollywood, while frightening moviegoers out of the water for years. When pieces of human flesh wash up on the shore of a popular tourist resort, Police Chief Brody suspects the worst. But local officials, mindful of the lucrative tourist trade, refuse to put the island on a business-killing shark alert. After more deadly attacks, Brody recruits marine biologist Hooper and veteran fisherman Quint to hunt down the legendary beast, only to realise it is the shark that is hunting them. Director Steven Spielberg Cast Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Shaw, USA 1975, 1h59m, 12A contains moderate threat and occasional gory moments
Do the Right Thing

However, on this day, the simmering racial tensions between Sal’s Italian-American family and the predominately AfricanAmerican neighbourhood come to the fore as thinly veiled hatred and bigotry explodes into violence. One of Spike Lee’s earliest feature films, Do the Right Thing overflows with creative energy, political relevance and righteous anger. It is recognised not only as one of Lee’s best works, but also as one of the greatest films ever made. Screening on 35mm. The Virgin Suicides
Tuesday 25 August (20.30) Before the summer of ‘99, Sofia Coppola was known only for being the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola. However, upon the release of The Virgin Suicides she quickly became one of America’s most interesting filmmakers, delicately exploring themes of identity, angst and awkwardness in young women with melancholy and balanced humour. One dreamy ‘70s summer, 13-year-old Cecilia commits suicide, and her four older sisters are placed in isolation by their parents, quarantined from social interaction – particularly from the opposite sex. A curious and compelling story that is brought to life by the actors’ genuine emotions and a fantastic soundtrack by French duo Air. Director Sofia Coppola Cast Kirsten Dunst, Josh Hartnett, James Woods, USA 1999, 1h33m, 15
