99 Homes
Friday 25 September - Thursday 1 October Writer/director Ramin Bahrani (Goodbye Solo, Chop Shop) has a reputation for creating gripping character-based dramas, and 99 Homes continues his winning streak. There is a ‘ripped from the headlines’ quality to this tale of a young man (Andrew Garfield) who is evicted from his home by a mercenary real estate broker (Michael Shannon), then ends up having to work for the same broker to provide a home for his mother (Laura Dern) and young son. Powerful performances and tense drama make this a must-see. Director Ramin Bahrani Cast Michael Shannon, Andrew Garfield, Laura Dern, USA 2014, 1h52m, 15
Mia madre
Friday 25 September - Thursday 1 October Cited as his best film since The Son’s Room, Nanni Moretti’s semi-autobiographical Mia madre revisits the themes of family relationships and loss which occupy his earlier film. Margherita (Margherita Buy) is a director in the midst of shooting her next film, whilst dealing with the emotional strain of looking after her very sick, elderly mother. Co-starring Moretti as Margherita’s melancholy brother and John Turturro as demanding American actor Barry Huggins, the film centres on Margherita’s struggle to keep her professional and private worlds separate. Director Nanni Moretti Cast Margherita Buy, John Turturro, Giulia Lazzarini, France/Italy 2015, 1h46m, subtitles, 15

Palio
Friday 25 September - Thursday 1 October Twice a year the Italian city of Siena goes crazy for the oldest horse race in the world: the Palio. Not your average race, strategy, bribery and corruption play as much a part as the skill of the riders. With breathtaking cinematography, director Cosima Spender’s documentary follows 13-time winner Gigi Bruschelli as he is challenged by young upstart Giovanni Atzeni. Two races away from beating the world record, Bruschelli will do anything to win. Their passionate and dramatic battle is an epic and cinematic tale of Italian life in microcosm. Director Cosima Spender, UK 2015, 1h30m, subtitles, 12A: moderate violence, injury detail, sex references

Macbeth
Preview: Sunday 27 September (19.30), Friday 2 - Thursday 13 October Justin Kurzel (Snowtown) brings Shakespeare’s great tragedy to life with bloodthirsty gusto. Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard star as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, with a supporting cast including Paddy Considine as Banquo and David Thewlis as Duncan. This visceral interpretation of ‘the Scottish play’ places emphasis on the physical conflict – transposing much of the action to the epic Scottish landscape. Fassbender excels as the brave general whose ambition leads him to guilt-ridden moral ruin, and Cotillard conveys Lady Macbeth’s power-hungry descent into madness with nuanced sophistication. Shot in locations including Skye and the Highlands, this is a brilliantly bold adaptation. Programme notes are available in the cinema and online at www.glasgowfilm.org Director Justin Kurzel Cast Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, David Hayman, UK/France/USA 2015, 1h53m, 15
Hard to Be a God Trudno byt bogom
Monday 28 - Wednesday 30 September Late Russian director Aleksei German spent the last 12 years of his life working on this jaw-dropping adaptation of Boris and Arkady Strugatsky’s cult novel, and the result is a science fiction epic like no other. Sent to the Earth-like planet Arkanar on a research trip, a group of scientists discover a human civilization that hasn’t moved beyond medieval times in its societal make-up. An extreme and barbarous vision of the human condition, for anyone with an interest in art cinema, Hard to Be a God is essential viewing. Director Aleksei German Cast Leonid Yarmolnik, Yuri Tsurilo, Natalya Moteva, Russia 2013, subtitles, 2h57m, 18
Fidelio: Alice’s Journey Fidelio, l’odyssée d’Alice
Friday 2 - Thursday 8 October In her job as a ship’s mechanic, Alice is a woman in a man’s world. She takes a long-haul position aboard the Fidelio, an old freighter ship, and begins a journey of both body and soul. Discovering the recently-deceased former mechanic’s journal in her quarters, Alice is surprised to find that his desires and emotions were not so different to her own. ‘Easily the most fascinating film to come along and challenge traditional gender roles in the past year’ - Variety Director Lucie Borleteau Cast Ariane Labed, Melvil Poupaud, Anders Danielsen Lie, France 2014, subtitles, 1h37m, CTBC

Sicario
Friday 9 - Thursday 15 October The latest film by director Denis Villeneuve (Enemy, Prisoners, Incendies) is a bracing and brutal look at the escalating war against drugs in the border area between the U.S and Mexico. Emily Blunt plays stoic CIA agent Kate, who is drafted into a mysterious, agency-merging task force headed by rule-bending team leader Matt (Josh Brolin). With striking cinematography by Roger Deakins, a foreboding score by Johann Johannsson (The Theory of Everything) and an all-star cast, Sicario is a rare intelligent genre movie. Director Denis Villeneuve Cast Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, USA 2014, 2h1m, 15
Just Jim
Tuesday 6 - Thursday 8 October Written and directed by talented British actor Craig Roberts (Submarine, Jane Eyre) this awkward comedy focuses on Jim, a loner school kid in a small town. Deserted for the cool crowd by his only friend Michael, Jim has no-one to turn to but his dog for companionship. But that all changes when an enigmatic, street-smart American called Dean (Emile Hirsch) moves in next door. Stylish and darkly funny, pitched somewhere between David Lynch and Wes Anderson, this is a quirky and confident debut. Director Craig Roberts Cast Emile Hirsch, Craig Roberts, Sai Bennett, UK 2015, 1h24m, 15

Zoran, My Nephew the Idiot
Friday 2 - Sunday 4 October An unreliable misanthrope with a fondness for booze, Paolo is the last person you would want to have responsibility over another human being. Yet when his aunt dies, Paolo is left to look after his shy teenage nephew Zoran. It is a match made in hell but Zoran proves to have a special talent – he is a demon at darts. Paolo senses a goldmine and starts training him for a world championship, however, their relationship becomes rewarding in ways that Paolo could never have imagined. Director Matteo Oleotto Cast Giuseppe Battiston, Teco Celio, Rok Prasnikar Italy/Slovenia 2013, 1h46m, subtitles, CTBC

Suffragette
Monday 12 - Thursday 29 October At the turn of the century, British women suffered at the hands of the patriarchy – forbidden the right to vote and basic equality. This film tells the story of the select few who stood up to the social norm, working women who radicalised the status quo and saw violence as the only route to change – willing to sacrifice everything for what they believed in. This is an important and compelling story, told by a female writer (Abi Morgan) and director (Sarah Gavron), and with an all-star female cast. CULT CLASSICS
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Friday 25 September (23.00) Wes Craven’s 1984’s insomnia-inducing scare-fest A Nightmare on Elm Street places its killer in the most chilling location of all; within the victim’s nightmares. Throughout his career, Craven always showed a great understanding of the horror genre, keeping generation after generation awake with his fearful monsters and petrifying stories. Nowhere is this exemplified better than in the clawed murderer Freddy Kreuger, who stalks the dreams of the teens on Elm Street. If Nancy doesn’t wake up screaming, she won’t wake up at all…
Halloween
Friday 30 October (23.00) John Carpenter’s masterful horror film was the first in the long withstanding slasher-flick genre. On Halloween night in 1963, a six-year old Michael Myers dressed in a clown costume and killed his older sister by stabbing her with a kitchen knife. Fifteen years later, aged 21, Myers escapes from the psychiatric hospital where he has been sentenced and returns to his home to terrorise the teenagers who now reside there. A treatise in fear, Capenter’s film is the ultimate Halloween thrill-ride. Director John Carpenter Cast Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tony Moran, USA 1978, 1h31m, 18
Director Wes Craven Cast Heather Langenkamp, Johnny Depp, Robert Englund USA 1984, 2h11m, 18

Gremlins
Friday 27 November (23.00) Great Odin’s Raven! Ron Burgundy is the finest news anchor from the greatest era of television news (the 1970s, of course), but with the arrival of Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) can he and his chauvinist colleagues accept the reality that women can read news too? Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s comic creation is a quotable phenomenon: “News team assemble!”
Friday 11 December (23.00) An antidote to the artificial sweetness of the traditional Christmas movie, Gremlins tells the story of an inventor who purchases a cute creature for his son. When vital instructions are ignored, a pack of predatory gremlins are unleashed upon the town with devastating effect. Director Joe Dante Cast Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, USA 1984, 1h46m 12A: Contains moderate violence and fantasy horror
Director Adam McKay Cast Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Steve Carell, USA 2004, 1h30m, 12A: Contains frequent moderate sex references and comic violence
Die Hard
Friday 18 December (23.00) One of the greatest action movies ever made opens with a festive setting as NYPD officer John McClane (Bruce Willis in his prime) takes on Alan Rickman’s archetypal European villain, Hans Gruber. When McClane goes to the Christmas party at his estranged wife’s office ‘by mistake’, he finds himself embroiled in an action-packed rescue mission to save the hostages being held by Gruber as he attempts to steal 600 million dollars. Yippee-ki-yay! Director John McTiernan Cast Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman, Bonnie Bedelia, USA 1988, 2h7m, 15

Ghostbusters
Wednesday 14 October (15.40) If there’s something strange in your neighbourhood – who ya gonna call? Why, Doctors Stanz, Spengler and Venkman, of course (oh and that other bloke they hire later). This film has it all: state-of-the-art 80s SFX, a loopy guys-on-a-mission plot, some awful synth ’n’ snare electro-pop and a handful of the finest one-liners ever. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and director Ivan Reitman successfully combine their Saturday Night Live/National Lampoons humour with a downright silly storyline to create comedy gold. Over 30 years old, it’s still brilliant. Director Ivan Reitman Cast Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, USA 1984, 1h45m, 12A: moderate sex references
