Gone Girl

Friday 3 – Thursday 23 October Acclaimed director David Fincher’s adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s global best seller features an all-star cast in a tangled tale of love, lies and deceit in recession-era New York. When Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) reports his wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) missing on the day of their fifth wedding anniversary, he finds himself under intense scrutiny from an increasing media circus that begins to poke holes in their supposedly blissful union. Fincher once again teams up with his The Social Network music partners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, in a film that investigates our celebrity obsessed culture and the impact of the recession on relationships whilst also questioning how much we can really know about one another. Director David Fincher Cast Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, USA 2014, 2h25m, CTBC

Friday 10 – Thursday 23 October New talent Jack O’Connell follows up his star-making role in this year’s Starred Up with this harrowing drama from first-time feature director Yann Demange, scripted by Black Watch writer Gregory Burke. O’Connell is quiet yet captivating as young English squaddie Gary Hook, who finds himself trapped alone in a hostile area of Belfast in the midst of one of the Northern Ireland Troubles’ worst years, in 1971. Fresh out of basic training, the film follows Hook’s nightmarish journey through the ravaged streets, through guerrilla outposts in an alien land. With Burke’s remarkable screenplay, this tight, taught and, at times, explosive period thriller furthers O’Connell’s status as the next big thing. The screening on Tue 13 Oct (18.15) will be introduced by Dr Nessa Johnston, lecturer at Glasgow School of Art, as part of our Contemporary Cinema Course. Director Yann Demange Cast Jack O’Connell, Sam Reid, Sean Harris, UK 2014, 1h39m, 15

Magic in the Moonlight Friday 3 – Thursday 9 October

Woody Allen’s latest film signals the director’s return to lighter-hearted territory, with a sharp script, outstanding acting and a luscious period setting. In 1928, sceptical and tired stage magician Stanley (Colin Firth) finds himself enlisted by an old friend to sojourn to the French Riviera in order to debunk a young woman claiming to be a clairvoyant, who has supposedly taken in a rich American family. However, the young woman, played with an easy effervescent charm by Emma Stone, disarms and softens the curmudgeonly Stanley as personal and professional collide to deliver a comedy of manners that is immediately vintage Allen. Director Woody Allen Cast Colin Firth, Emma Stone, Marcia Gay Harden, USA 2014, 1h37m, 12A: contains moderate sex reference

Tony Benn: Will and Testament

Human Capital Il capitale umano

Friday 3 - Monday 6 October Tony Benn was the longest serving Labour MP in history and also, arguably, the most popular UK politician of all time. Across the globe and in particular over the last five years his brand of socialism has struck a chord with people of all ages and social backgrounds. For the first time ever, through intimate, quasi-confessional interviews and his personal, photographic and film archive, Will and Testament reveals a very human face behind the political mask. The screening on Sunday 5 October will be followed by a live satellite Q&A and panel discussion, remembering Tony Benn and his politics.

Friday 3 – Thursday 9 October Two of Italy’s best-loved actresses, Matilde Gioli and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, star in this slick, stylish fusion of class critique and murder mystery. Based on the best-selling book by Stephen Amidon, adapted and directed by rising talent Paolo Virzi, this tale approaches a stranger’s tragic death from three vastly different perspectives that soon converge and entangle the lives of two families. Shot with vigour and bravura, the narrative unfolds in chapter form, as the three characters’ lives tumble towards an unavoidable tragedy. Programme notes are available in the cinema and online at www.glasgowfilm.org

Director Skip Kite, UK 2014, 1h25m, CTBC

Director Paolo Virzì Cast Fabrizio Bentivoglio, Matilde Gioli, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Italy 2014, 1h49m, subtitles, 15

The Last Impresario

Saturday 4 – Monday 6 October Glasgow-born producer Michael White appears to know everyone. A legendary social butterfly who impacted upon countless iconic figures in popular culture within his sixty-year career – from partying with The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, to helping form Monty Python and bringing revolutionary performers like Pina Bausch and Yoko Ono to British audiences. This debut feature (born of a chance encounter at Cannes Film Festival) from twenty-six-year-old Gracie Otto features a stellar line up, with famous faces such as Naomi Watts, Kate Moss, John Waters, Barry Humphries, John Cleese and many more discussing their relationships with White. Director Gracie Otto, UK/France 2013, 1h32m, 15

Violette

Monday 13 – Thursday 16 October Based on the life of French novelist Violette Leduc (played here by Emmanuelle Devos), Martin Provost’s film recounts her relationship with Simone de Beauvoir (Sandrine Kiberlain), who recognised the young Leduc as a rising talent and a rare female ally in the predominantly masculine post-war literary circles. Whilst it is clear that Leduc is barely keeping her emotions at bay, de Beauvoir holds her at a distance with cool detachment. Although the exact nature of attraction is different from each woman’s perspective, Provost’s film is an engaging and enlightening account of artistic companionship. Director Martin Provost Cast Emmanuelle Devos, Sandrine Kiberlain, Olivier Gourmet, France 2013, 2h19m, subtitles, 15

The Devil’s Backbone El espinazo del diablo Tuesday 14 October (20.30)

A subtle early classic from Guillermo del Toro, director of the acclaimed Pan’s Labyrinth, this Spanish thriller portrays the horrors of Civil War through the eyes of a terrified child. 10-year-old Carlos has been left in a remote orphanage while the war rages on across Spain, threatening to get closer every day. Bullied by his fellow orphans, he discovers that the orphanage is haunted by a murdered child. The film will be introduced by Dr David Archibald (University of Glasgow), author of The War That Won’t Die: The Spanish Civil War in Cinema, which is newly available in paperback. Director Guillermo del Toro Cast Marisa Paredes, Eduardo Noriega, Federico Luppi, Spain 2001, 1h45m, subtitles, 15

Maps to the Stars

Friday 17 – Thursday 23 October ‘Hollywood dreams turn queasy in David Cronenberg’s brilliant nightmare…’ - Peter Bradshaw Canadian maestro Cronenberg returns with his latest look at the dark undersides of humanity, this time focusing on the grotesque caricatures that populate Hollywood, Babylon. An all-star ensemble cast portray the vacuous, the disillusioned and the boorish fictional stars of past, present and future. From Julianne Moore’s bitter has-been to Evan Bird’s uncouth child-star and Mia Wasikowska’s frighteningly determined Hollywood newcomer, no one is spared from Cronenberg’s acidic and cutthroat dissection of modern celebrity. Director David Cronenberg Cast Julianne Moore, Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska, John Cusack, USA 2014, 1h52m, 18

Palo Alto

Friday 17 – Thursday 23 October The hopes and hang-ups of drifting American teens are evocatively examined by Gia Coppola (granddaughter of Francis) in this atmospheric adaptation of a short story collection by James Franco. Featuring a handful of brilliant performances from rising stars Emma Roberts, Nat Wolff and Jack Kilmer, plus hilarious cameos from the older generation, including Val Kilmer and Franco himself, Palo Alto is reminiscent of Sofia Coppola’s debut The Virgin Suicides, and marks the arrival of another talent in this ever-expanding filmmaking dynasty. Programme notes are available in the cinema and online at www.glasgowfilm.org Director Gia Coppola Cast Emma Roberts, James Franco, Jack Kilmer, USA 2014, 1h40m, 15

Bicycle

Fri 17 (18.00) & Sat 18 Oct (16.00) Directed by BAFTA winning director and keen cyclist Michael B Clifford, this film tells the story of cycling in the land that invented the modern bicycle: its birth, decline and rebirth from Victorian origins to today. Weaving bicycle design, sport and transport through the retelling of some iconic stories, Bicycle features interviews with notable contributors Sir Dave Brailsford, Chris Boardman, Ned Boulting, Sir Chris Hoy, Tracy Moseley and many more. A humorous and warm reflection on the bicycle and its place in the British national psyche. We are delighted that director Michael B Clifford will join us for a Q&A after the 18.00 on Fri 17 Oct. Cathedrals of Culture 3D

Sunday 19 (15.50) & Tuesday 21 October (19.35) Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire, Paris, Texas) follows up his pioneering documentary Pina 3D by overseeing another documentary project exploring the possibilities of stereoscopic cinema. Cathedrals of Culture features six short films from six acclaimed directors - including Robert Redford and Wenders himself – each focusing on a different world-famous building, from Berlin Philharmonic to Halden Prison in Norway. Each film uses ingenious camera work and meticulous sound design to transport audiences into ‘the soul’ of the buildings; a totally unique cinema experience. Directors Karim Aïnouz, Michael Glawogger, Michael Madsen, Robert Redford, Wim Wenders, Margreth Olin, 2014, 2h45m, 12A: infrequent strong language

Advanced Style Tuesday 21 October (18.00)

Advanced Style examines the lives of seven New Yorkers whose eclectic personal style and vital spirit have guided their approach to ageing. Based on Ari Seth Cohen’s famed blog, this film paints intimate and colourful portraits of independent, stylish women aged 62 to 95 who are challenging ideas about beauty, ageing, and Western culture’s obsession with youth. The film is preceded by short film The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life (Malcolm Clarke, 2013, 39m). Part of Luminate: Scotland’s creative ageing festival. Director Lina Plioplyte, USA 2013, 1h12m, PG

Northern Soul

Wednesday 22 & Thursday 23 October This is a story of a youth culture that changed a generation and influenced songwriters, producers, DJs and designers for decades to come. This film tells the tale of two Northern boys whose worlds are changed forever when they discover black American soul music. Lux Scotland presents selections from Anne Charlotte Roberton’s Five Year Diary Sunday 5 October (19.30)

Anne Charlotte Robertson’s Five Year Diary stands as one of the major works of diary filmmaking. An intimate chronicle of her life, they describe Robertson’s battles with depression, paranoia, and borderline schizophrenia. The diaries document Robertson’s hospitalisations, her crush on Doctor Who actor Tom Baker, the side effects of prescription medication and the death of her three-year-old niece. Robertson died of cancer in September 2012, and her work is preserved by the Harvard Film Archive. We are delighted that curator Bárbara Rodríguez Muñoz will take part in a post-screening Q&A, hosted by LUX Scotland. Copies of the Anne Charlotte Robertson: Five Year Diary publication will also be available free to ticket-holders. Director Anne Charlotte Robertson, USA 2012, 1h20m, N/C 15+

Highlander

Thursday 30 October (20.15)

Divorced museum curator Minnie (Rowlands) becomes disillusioned after breaking up with her married boyfriend. A chance encounter leads her to parking lot attendant Seymour Moskowitz (Cassel), who falls in love with Minnie and begins the task of convincing her that the two seemingly polar opposites belong together. The screening is selected and introduced by Kathryn Elkin, a Glasgow-based visual artist who works with performance, video and writing.

From the moody, rain-soaked, noir-ish streets of late 20th century America to the wilderness of medieval Scotland, Russell Mulcahy’s wildly entertaining tale of battling immortals is a truly heroic stomp through time and space. The good guys are open-hearted musclemen, the baddies ripple under black leather and pumping hard rock provides the soundtrack - yes, Highlander is quintessential 80s cheese and a total popcorn classic. Psychotronic Cinema presents this much loved cult favourite in glorious 35mm.

Make Way for Tomorrow Sunday 26 October (13.00)

This beautifully made, superbly acted, achingly funny, deliriously romantic and utterly heartbreaking film about old age is one of Hollywood’s greatest achievements. Although not well known, its influence has been far reaching. Indeed, this simple depression-era story of an elderly couple who are forced to separate after they lose their house and discover that none of their children is prepared to take them both in inspired Yasujiro Ozu’s masterpiece, Tokyo Story. No less a figure than Orson Welles said that this most uncompromising of tear-jerkers ‘could make a stone cry’. See it and weep! Part of Luminate: Scotland’s creative ageing festival. Directors Leo McCarey Cast Victor Moore, Beulah Bondi, Fay Bainter, USA 1937, 1h31m, U

JIM JARMUSCH: AN AMERICAN ORIGINAL

Mixing no-wave transgression with a breadth of film knowledge and influences from all over the world, cult American auteur Jim Jarmusch is without a doubt one of the most iconic and revered filmmakers of the past 30 years. Always working with a fiercely independent style, Jarmusch blends music, art and a consistency of tone that is entirely his own, to fuse together some of the most inimitably cool works of cinema.

Permanent Vacation

Fri 3 (14.10 & 18.30) & Sat 4 Oct (20.50) Jarmusch’s first film, made as part of his course in film school, features all the many unique styles that would fast become part of the auteur’s trademark technique. Rarely seen anywhere, least of all in the cinema, the film features a young, alienated youth walking the streets of New York, meeting various characters who only increase his sense of isolation. With quirky humour and a bleak look at a ghostly early 1980s New York, the film is a perfect entry point into the weary and effortlessly cool world of Jarmusch. Director Jim Jarmusch Cast Chris Parker, Leila Gastil, Maria Duval USA 1980, 1h12m, 12A: Contains a single use of strong language and references to violence

Stranger Than Paradise Sun 5 (13.20 & 17.45) & Mon 6 Oct (20.40)

The film that cemented Jarmusch as a revelatory talent of new US cinema, Stranger Than Paradise won Jarmusch the Camera d’Or at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival. Essentially an absurdist deadpan comedy, the film stars jazz musician John Lurie, former Sonic Youth drummer Richard Edson and Hungarian-born actress Eszter Balint. With a minimalist plot that makes you notice every grungy detail of the characters’ lives, an episodic nature and subversive dialogue, the film broke the mould and essentially shaped US independent cinema for decades to come. Director Jim Jarmusch Cast John Lurie, Eszter Balint, Richard Edson, USA 1984, 1h29m, 15

Mystery Train

Tue 7 (19.30) & Wed 8 Oct (13.00 & 17.50) Featuring a more intricate narrative than any of Jarmusch’s previous works, this 1989 film tells a trio of interwoven stories about foreigners who for one reason or another end up in the same hotel, managed by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. From a young Japanese couple on a blues pilgrimage, to an Italian widow stranded in the city overnight and a newly single and unemployed Englishman played by Joe Strummer, who passes the time with two companions – one of whom is his ex-girlfriend’s brother Charlie (played by Steve Buscemi). Eccentric, entertaining and fascinating, Mystery Train closes off Jarmusch’s loose trilogy of foreigners in America started with Stranger than Paradise and continued through Down By Law. Director Jim Jarmusch Cast Joe Strummer, Steve Buscemi, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, USA 1989, 1h50m, 15

Night on Earth

Fri 10 (13.20) & Sat 11 Oct (20.15) Although Night on Earth features a huge international cast, Jarmusch uses a variety of uniquely limiting shots and compositions to depict five stories, all set in taxis across the world, all reflecting on one another in some way. Focusing on the temporary bond between driver and passenger, Jarmusch wrote the screenplay in around eight days. He created characters specifically for actors he wished to work with, including Roberto Benigni’s largely improvised turn as an eccentric Roman cabbie. Director Jim Jarmusch Cast Winona Ryder, Roberto Benigni, Gena Rowlands, USA 1991, 2h9m, 15

Dead Man

Fri 17 (13.00 & 17.50) & Sat 18 Oct (15.15 & 20.00) Jarmusch describes this 1995 Johnny Depp starring film as a ‘Psychedelic’ or ‘Acid’ Western. Shot in monochrome and with a loose guitar soundtrack by Neil Young (in full psychedelic garage mode), this work is often considered the ultimate postmodern western. Depp plays William Blake, a young accountant who is wounded and finds himself in the company of an odd, outcast Native American named ‘Nobody’. A hallucinatory trip into a cruel and chaotic world, this film features an all-star cast that includes John Hurt, Crispin Glover, Iggy Pop, Gabriel Byrne and Robert Mitchum in his final film role. Director Jim Jarmusch Cast Johnny Depp, Gary Farmer, Iggy Pop, USA 1995, 2h, 18

After nearly four decades together, Ben and George are finally able to tie the knot. However, when George loses his job, the couple are forced to live apart and the relationship is tested in unconventional ways. An emotionally engaging ensemble drama anchored by two brilliant lead performances. Part of Luminate: Scotland’s creative ageing festival. Dog Day Afternoon Sunday 26 October (17.00)

This American classic features one of Al Pacino’s best performances as a bank robber running a stick-up in order to get money for his lover’s gender reassignment surgery. Sidney Lumet’s film recounts the true story of a bank heist that took place in New York in the 1970s. Although the robbery was supposed to take ten minutes, it lasted over eight hours – gripping the American public as TV cameras gathered outside. Riveting performances, absurdist humour and brilliant social observations make for one of the most definitive crime thrillers of the 70s. Directors Sidney Lumet Cast Al Pacino, John Cazale, Charles Durning, USA 1975, 1h59m, 15

A captivating account of an unusual life lived to the full and with no regrets. Directors Allison Berg, François Keraudren, USA 2014, 1h41m, N/C 15+

The Watermelon Woman Tuesday 4 November (18.00)

Age of Consent

Wednesday 5 November (20.20)

A classic of the New Queer Cinema of the 90s, director Cheryl Dunye’s The Watermelon Woman addresses the lack of black lesbian representation in cultural history. A young woman makes a film about an enigmatic black female actor from the 1930s known for her stereotypical ‘mammy’ roles. At the same time, she falls for a white woman and intimacy and personal angst mingle with a fascinating investigation into race, sexuality, and history.

Legendary queer filmmakers Todd Verow and Charles Lum profile London’s longest-running leather bar, The Hoist, in a no-holds-barred depiction of the history of gay sex in the city. Interviews with the bar’s unique personalities combine with reflection by experts and historical witnesses such as Peter Tatchell and Brian Robinson, who muse on topics from decriminalization and Section 28 to leather vs sports wear and Grindr.

We are delighted that members of Glasgow Women’s Library will join us for a post-screening discussion on lesbian and female bisexual representation in cinema.

This event will be introduced by Luke & Jack, Scotland’s premiere sex boutique, who will also take part in a post-screening discussion on the history of gay male sex.

Director Cheryl Dunye Cast Cheryl Dunye, Guinevere Turner, Valarie Walker, USA 1996, 1h30m, N/C 12+

Director Charles Lum, Todd Verow USA/UK 2014, 1h28m, N/C 18+

My Prairie Home

Cry-Baby

Sunday 9 November (17.30)

Friday 14 November (23.15)

Indie musician Rae Spoon, who is transgender, returns to their roots in the conservative Canadian Prairies in this stunning musicaldocumentary by director Chelsea McMullan. Rae grew up in an abusive, evangelical Christian household, giving them (Rae uses gender neutral pronouns) a unique perspective on life. Blending magical realism, music video, travelogue, and live concert footage, My Prairie Home is a very original, blissful meditation on what it’s like to feel out of place. Introduced by the Scottish Transgender Alliance, an organisation which works to improve gender equality, rights, and inclusion.

At the start of the 1990s, the biggest teen idol in the world, Johnny Depp, chose to eschew his status by starring in cult director John Waters’ gleefully camp musical ode to the teen rebel genre. Waters brings the 1950s to life with his inimitable style, telling the tale of high school bad-boy Wade ‘Cry-Baby’ Walker (Depp), who wins the heart of the rich, beautiful ‘square’ Allison Vernon Williams, drawing her into his forbidden world of fast cars, music and delinquent lifestyle. Part of our Late Night Cult Classics. Director John Waters Cast Johnny Depp, Amy Locane, Ricki Lake, USA 1990, 1h25m, 15

Director Chelsea McMullan, Canada 2013, 1h16m, N/C 12+
