CONTEMPORARY CINEMA COURSE Monday 16 October – Monday 11 December
An ideal beginner’s course for those wishing to broaden their critical understanding of contemporary cinema. Current releases are complemented by engaging discussion around a range of topics. The course takes place over eight consecutive Monday evenings, and is comprised of four film screenings and four seminars. Films will be in early evenings but exact times may vary, seminars will take place at 18.30 in GFT project room. Tue 10 – Thu 12 Oct La Soledad, meaning “solitude”, is the name of a delapidated house in Caracas. Antique portraits hang from crumbling walls and garden weeds force their way through the cracks - yet in the midst of Venezuela’s economic and political crisis it has become a sanctuary. Featuring the real residents of the house, director Jorge Thielen Armand’s debut feature combines sharp social critique with magical realism to offer an engaging portrait of the effects of economic catastrophe on individuals’ lives. However, Oliver Laxe’s second feature is a wholly original and hypnotic journey through faith in the Middle East. A minimalist ‘Eastern Western’ following a caravan transporting a dead sheik back to his medieval city, Mimosas won the Grand Prize at Cannes’ Semaine de la Critique. Sunday 29 October (17.25) In France, formerly colonised Africans arrive to seek a better life but instead find unemployment, unacceptable living conditions, blatant racism, and bureaucratic indifference. Mauritanian director Med Hondo eschewed conventional narrative forms in this scathing attack on colonialism, which remains as relevant today as it was in the 1960s. The film first screened at the 1970 Cannes Film Festival, and screened again at Cannes in 2017, after its restoration by Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Foundation. This screening is part of AiM’s focus on Africa’s Lost Classics, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). Vaya Thursday 2 November (17.50) Vaya focuses on three passengers on a train bound for Johannesburg, strangers to one another but bound by interlocking destinies. Access Film Club: The Boy and the Beast Tuesday 10 October (Film Starts: 18.00) An action-packed Japenese animation from one of the true anime masters, Mamoru Hosoda. Saturday 7 October (18.05) 17-year-old Ying Ling is a trainee mortician in one of China’s largest funeral homes. She delicately treats the motionless corpses, terrified of the spirits that might be lurking in the long corridors. Her work is made bearable through the camaraderie of a colleague, but when he leaves Ying Ling is forced to face the daunting job alone. This documentary is a tender portrait of a vibrant young woman approaching adulthood in a place filled with final farewells, in a time when new philosophies are fast overtaking age-old traditions. Satuday 28 October (14.00) A meditation on the Israel-Palestine conflict centring on the lives and ideas of four renowned critics of Israel: Noam Chomsky, Sara Roy, Norman Finkelstein and Robert Fisk. The impressionistic film takes shape around their reflections - eschewing a more conventional documentary style for a series of ‘notes’. World Wars I and II, the Holocaust, the Vietnam War, Civil Rights, East Timor and the conquest of the New World all enter the frame, evoking commonalities across conflict. Nature of the Beast + Q&A Thursday 26 October (20.10) Raised alongside nine siblings in a mining village, socialist, trade unionist and Labour politician Dennis Skinner has fought for the rights of the working class for over 50 years. Uncompromising in his views and with a set of incorruptible principles, Dennis is respected and feared on both sides of the House of Commons. This revealing documentary looks at what lies behind his passion and drive, and tracks his rise from a local councillor to today, where he is one of Britain’s most recognisable politicians, known as ‘The Beast of Bolsover’.
