HEARTBREAKER L’arnacoeur
WHITE MATERIAL 15
Friday 2 – Thursday 15 July Director Pascal Chalmeuil Cast Romain Duris, Vanessa Paradis, Julie Ferrier France 2010, 1h44m, subtitles
Rom-com is not usually a term associated with cinema gold. Heartbreaker is 24 carat funny, already securing a huge and appreciative audience in its native France. Leads Vanessa Paradis and Romain Duris are a very glamorous but unconventional couple. Alex (Duris) has a policy of only chasing women already in a relationship, and Juliette (Paradis) seems very happy and fulfilled in hers. Perhaps Alex’s motivation in breaking up couples will be exposed by his new conquest? See this sexy film before you have to tolerate the inevitable word, remake.

Friday 2 – Thursday 15 July Director Claire Denis Cast Isabelle Huppert, Christopher Lambert France 2009, 1h40m, subtitles
Set in an African country in the throes of a civil and racial conflict, White Material follows a French woman determined to keep her coffee plantation functioning even while social structures are collapsing and her workforce is bailing out. With her ex-husband at her side and her son violently propelled into the action, Maria must draw on all her resources to survive. Meanwhile, a rebel officer is hiding out nearby. As their way of life disintegrates around them, each character makes choices, none of which are predictable. Claire Denis: The Cinema of Desire and Sensation (see pages 23 – 25 for details of the season). Jenny Munro, postgraduate student at University of Glasgow, will introduce the season prior to the screening on Sunday 4 July (5.30).

Friday 9 – Thursday 22 July Director Catherine Corsini Cast Kristin Scott Thomas, Sergi López, Yvan Attal
France 2010, 1h44m, subtitles
France 2009, 1h25m, subtitles
The first ever feature length documentary about the emblematic 60’s rock band The Doors. Director DiCillo hypnotically weaves together archive and previously unseen footage to provide new insight into the revolutionary impact of the band’s music and legacy. The film provides a riveting insight into the history of both the band and America from 1965 to Morrison’s untimely death in 1971.
When an unhappy housewife tries leaving her husband for another man, she runs into even unhappier times in this brooding tale of explosive amour fou. Tightly wound and crafted, with robust performances by Kristin Scott Thomas and Sergi López, the film offers a rough, no-frills take on a story as old as France itself. Director Catherine Corsini is no stranger to making films with complex female protagonists, and her story of wilful female passion is made all the more engrossing by the bold performances of her high-calibre cast.
On Wednesday 7 July (6.00) will be introduced by Dr Miriam Ross as part of the Contemporary Cinema Course.
Screening with The Artists’ Cinema short film A Love Story (5 mins) part of a new series of artists’ film commissions from the ICO and LUX.
THE OTHER FINAL
N/C 8+
Wednesday 7 July (8.15) Director Johan Kramer Netherlands 2003, 1h18m, subtitles
Want to escape the World Cup this year? Want even more action before the final? This delightful, funny and uplifting film tells the story of one of the most memorable games never played. On June 20, 2002, while Germany faced down Brazil, another final took place between the two lowest ranking national teams on earth: Bhutan and Montserrat. Putting happiness, sympathy and a faulty loudspeaker ahead of glory and product placement, the match caught the imaginations of millions of people around the world and offers an unforgettable reminder of what the beautiful game is really all about. Presented by Take One Action, Scotland’s global action cinema project, with input from football lovers in South Africa. For information on events through the year visit www.takeoneaction.org.uk. TRASH HUMPERS

Wednesday 14 (9.00) & Thursday 15 July (3.00/7.00)
LE CONCERT
Director Harmony Korine
Director Radu Mihaileanu Cast Mélanie Laurent, François Berléand
USA 2009, 1h18m
France 2009, 1h59m, subtitles
Controversial writer/director Harmony Korine (Kids, Gummo, Julien Donkey-Boy, Mr. Lonely) returns this year with one of his most provocative films yet: the award-winning Trash Humpers.
Andrei Flipov was a prodigy – the celebrated conductor of the Bolshoi Orchestra, the greatest orchestra in Russia. Today aged 50, he still works at the Bolshoi, but as a cleaner. During the communist era he was fired at the height of his fame for refusing to get rid of his Jewish players, including his best friend Sacha Grossman. Then Andrei finds a fax. An invitation for the orchestra to play at Pleyel, in Paris, in two weeks time, as a last minute replacement for the indisposed San Francisco Philharmonic. The Concert is pure weepie pleasure – and a brilliant, old-fashioned lesson in how a piece of music can be used cinematically to carry and mould an audience’s emotions. Screen International
A film unearthed from the buried landscape of the American nightmare, Trash Humpers follows a small group of elderly “peeping toms” through the shadows and margins of an unfamiliar world. Crudely documented by the participants themselves, we follow the debased and shocking actions of a group of true sociopaths, the likes of which have never been seen before. Inhabiting a world of broken dreams and beyond the limits of morality, they crash against a torn and frayed America. Bordering on an ode to vandalism, it is a new type of horror – palpable and raw.

WOMEN AJAMI WITHOUT MEN 15 Monday 19 – Wednesday 21 July Friday 16 – Thursday 22 July Director Shirin Neshat (with Shoja Azari) Cast Pegah Ferydoni, Arita Shahrzad, Shabnam Toloui, Orsi Tóth France/Germany/Austria 2009, 1h40m, subtitles
In 1953, four Iranian women search for freedom or survival. IranianAmerican artist Shirin Neshat’s interpretation of the banned novel by Shahrunsh Parshipar combines her skill in creating mood and tone with the magical-realist elements of the original writing. In parallel sequences, filmed in haunting muted hues, she portrays the women’s lives and individual journeys.

Directors Scandar Copti, Yaron Shani Cast Shahir Kabaha, Fouad Habash, Ibrahim Frege Israel 2009, 2h5m, subtitles
Scandar Copti is a Palestinian. Yaron Shani is an Israeli. Together they have collaborated on an extraordinary crime drama set on the mean streets of Ajami, one of the toughest neighbourhoods in Jaffa. Weaving together stories of violence and vendettas, illegal refugees and conscience-stricken cops, dreams of escape and hopes of sanctuary, they have created a film that offers a startling insight into the tensions, resentments and misunderstandings that are part of everyday life in Ajami. Winner of the London Film Festival’s Sutherland Trophy, a prize previously given to Persepolis, Red Road and Tarnation. GFF10 On Wednesday 21 July (5.45) will be introduced by Dr Miriam Ross as part of the Contemporary Cinema Course.

Friday 23 July – Sunday 1 August Director Giuseppe Tornatore Cast Francesco Scianna, Margareth Madè Italy 2009, 2h31m, subtitles
Written and directed by Academy Award® winner Giuseppe Tornatore (Cinema Paradiso), the film follows Peppino from his childhood in the 30s, to his forbidden romance and marriage to the beautiful Mannina through a turbulent time of Italian political upheaval. Baaria is a humorous and often heartbreaking tale set against the backdrop of a vibrant Sicilian town in the first half of the twentieth century.

A writer visits his isolated family home to say goodbye to his dying father, but memories of his beautiful twin sister awaken long buried secrets from their past. Actress Rachel Ward’s debut feature is a handsome and intense love story, a gothic tale of buried guilt and family dysfunction set in Australia’s outback. BRONCO BULLFROG 15 Monday 2 – Wednesday 4 August Director Barney Platts-Mills Cast Del Walker, Anne Gooding, Sam Shepherd UK 1969, 1h26m
A leading cult film of the 1960s and one of the finest records of Mod culture in British cinema, Bronco Bullfrog was largely improvised by a non-professional cast of teenagers from Stratford, East London, and is loosely based on events taken from the actors’ lives. 17-year-old Del and 15-year-old Irene suffer the perennial problems of teenage lovers – no money and nowhere to go. Del’s resentful, suspicious dad and Irene’s uptight, comically snobbish mum only make things worse. So they turn for help to old friend “Bronco Bullfrog”, who is fresh out of borstal and pursuing an enviably independent lifestyle. A wonderful time capsule of late 60s London – from the brutalist tower blocks and bomb sites of the East End to the trashy glamour of the West End – this is filmmaking with a spontaneity, wit and endearing humanity that still feels strikingly fresh.
BLUEBEARD Barbe Bleue CTBC Tuesday 3 – Thursday 5 August Director Catherine Breillat Cast Dominique Thomas, Lola Créton, Daphné Baiwir France 2009, 1h20m subtitles
This elegant Freudian fable begins in a bygone age, with two girls sent home from convent school when their father dies. With their family facing poverty, defiant Anne marries a much-feared local seigneur, the hirsute Bluebeard, and proves an unflappable match for him. In a present-day parallel strand, the tale of Bluebeard is read by another pair of siblings, who give the story a comic gloss. Offering pointed commentary on girlhood dreams and rebellious impulses, Bluebeard will appeal not just to Breillat devotees but also to lovers of the dark side of fairy tale. bfi Southbank

Wild Grass explores how one small event – the theft of a purse – can lead, by the most improbable and digressive of routes, to something very significant: a matter, in fact, of life and death. It’s one of Resnais’ more discursive pieces, broadening out from the obsessive and often perverse mindscape of its leading character to include a range of idiosyncrasies, all handled with such a light touch that eventually the film quite literally spirals off into the ether, as exhilaratingly as one of the countless crane shots that discreetly litter the movie. bfi Southbank 12A: Contains infrequent moderate language

Mousse and Louis are young, beautiful, rich and in love. But drugs have invaded their lives. One day they overdose and Louis dies. Mousse survives, but soon learns she’s pregnant. Feeling lost, she runs away to a house far from Paris. Several months later, Louis’ brother joins her in her refuge. Like Ozon’s Time To Leave and 5x2, Le Refuge is a bitter pill to swallow, peopled by brittle characters coping with intensely painful situations. But it’s also a bold exploration of outmoded social mores and unconventional relationships which will please arthouse devotees and lovers of provocative French cinema. THE ILLUSIONIST L’Illusioniste
Scotland 2009, 1h20m
Rooted in French popular culture of the 1950s, The Illusionist is based on a 1956 script by Jacques Tati (Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday), written as a private letter to his daughter and never produced. Chomet’s film focuses on an animated version of Tati in an emotionally complex story of a father and daughter. The illusionist is an old-style entertainer, touring Scotland (not the original but the final locale) and struggling with increasing alienation in a world where tastes have moved on. In this case, the new world is driven by the rhythms of rock and roll. Screening with The Artists’ Cinema short film Pulmo Marina (5 mins), part of a new series of artists’ film commissions from the ICO and LUX. £ Friends and Family Deal: 4 tickets for £20. Why not bring all the family? All tickets must be bought in one transaction either online or at box office.

Benoît Jacquot’s fifth film with Isabelle Huppert, Villa Amalia begins one rainy night on a Parisian road. Ann is tailing her husband’s car. When they reach his destination, she gets out of the car and, careful not be seen, follows him to the front door of a quiet suburban house. Two incidents occur almost simultaneously which will set in motion a riveting chain of events which the viewer will observe, engrossed if a little perplexed, until the film’s quiet conclusion: Ann will see her husband Thomas kiss another woman, Ann will run into childhood friend George. Sunday 29 – Tuesday 31 August Director Bob Rafelson / Cast Jack Nicholson, Karen Black USA 1970, 1h38m
A drop-out from upper-class America, Robert Dupea (Nicholson) lives life on the road, picking up work on oil rigs. The work is rough, as are the bars he frequents. Despite his affluent background, Robert is troubled by an all too common problem, his emotional inner conflict. Returning home to visit his dying father, he is confronted by what he has left behind, and why. Despite the film’s introspective theme, it is at times very funny and endearing, especially due to the touch of director Bob Rafelson.

This early Kurosawa film is based on a traditional story that exists in both Noh and Kabuki stage versions, with the director making use of elements from both. A young nobleman has to cross a checkpoint in his flight from a vengeful brother, and impersonates a porter to do so; one of his juniors has to beat him to make the deception more convincing, but thereby violates one of the prime tenets of the feudal code.

Kurosawa’s first independent venture is a revenge tragedy in which a rising executive (Mifune) attempts to expose big business corruption. As an employee of a big housing corporation, he marries the boss’s daughter in the hope of establishing the truth of his father’s “suicide”. The explicit social significance may now seem reminiscent of a Warner Brothers drama, but it proved controversial in Japan at the time, and there is nothing dated about Kurosawa’s deft handling of the TohoScope format.

Toshiro Mifune stars in this intimate epic as a doctor who works in a nineteenth century rural hospital that is in desperate need of modernisation. An ambitious young intern, to his horror, finds himself posted to this backwater and is tutored by Mifune to appreciate that care for the poor is more important than a society practice.
In Drunken Angel, Toshiro Mifune gives a glowering, dangerous performance as an arrogant young gangster. Takashi Shimura, Kurosawa’s other favourite actor, is the drunken doctor the gangster consults. Kurosawa’s anger at the damage being inflicted on his society seethes through the film, offering no easy answers.

When a wealthy foundry owner decides to move his entire family from Tokyo to Brazil to escape the nuclear holocaust that he fears is imminent, his family, afraid of losing their status and inheritance, tries to have him declared mentally incompetent. Made at the height of the Cold War, with the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki still a recent memory, this blazing attack on complacency stemmed from the same H-Bomb paranoia that gave birth to the Godzilla films.
LIVING IKIRU
Monday 9 (5.40) & Tuesday 10 August (1.00) Cast Takashi Shimura, Nobuo Kaneko Japan 1952, 2h21m

Hidden Fortress is another Kurosawa masterclass in the conflation of Japanese and Hollywood tropes. The filmmaker’s first widescreen effort, the story of a ragtag band trying to transport a princess to safety and eventually helping her to free her land, is the acknowledged source for George Lucas’ Star Wars.
Cast Toshiro Mifune, Takashi Shimura
Seven Samurai, the story of a band of masterless samurai defending a village from bandits, arguably remains Kurosawa’s towering cultural achievement. The biggest movie Japan had seen at the time in terms of budget, production and box-office takings, it was also an enormous influence on Western cinema, most notably in The Magnificent Seven (1960). ANDRE RIEU LIVE IN MAASTRICHT
BREAKING ROCKS
Tuesday 20 July (7.30)
Director Alan Miles
2h20m plus interval
UK 2009, 1h15m
Andre Rieu’s summer’s evening concert will be broadcast by satellite from Maastricht. Andre Rieu is a classical superstar who produces enormous set-piece concerts. His recent surge in popularity is due to the success of shows like Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing on Ice.
Breaking Rocks is an inspiring documentary that tells the story of Jail Guitar Doors, an initiative set up by Billy Bragg in commemoration of Clash musician Joe Strummer. The project provides musical instruments to prison inmates to help facilitate rehabilitation and prevent re-offending.
The evening is filled with musicians, singers, ballroom dancers and skaters set amongst the cultural backdrop of Vrijthof Square, Maastricht. As always, Andre is joined by his famous Johann Strauss Orchestra. £ All tickets £12.50 (£11.50 GFT CineCard holders)

Sunday 8 August (7.30)
Director Dziga Vertov
Director Andy Glen
USSR 1929, approx 1h20m
Scotland 2010, 55m
A Constructivist “documentary” of urban Soviet life in the most radical sense, Man with a Movie Camera is as much an investigation of the medium of film as an attempt to create a “truthful” image of reality, very much in line with other artistic strategies of the modern avantgarde. One of the most writtenabout and quoted experimental films of all time.
Following the maxim that “the best way of learning is doing”, piping legend Barry Donaldson forms a band of beginners to enter the 2009 World Pipe Band Championships. This amusing documentary follows pipers and drummers from throughout Europe through two days of mayhem and mutiny as they battle the elements and themselves in a quest to make it to the trigger line. Can the true spirit of Scotland win the day?
Live piano accompaniment by Neil Brand.
Director/producer Andy Glen has, for 20 years, blended music and film, working with such directors as Bill Forsyth, Richard Attenborough, Roman Polansky and Andrei Konchalovsky. Here he makes his directorial debut. This screening will be followed by a Q&A session with director/producer Andy Glen and some of the stars of the film. BUY TICKETS ONLINE WWW.GFT.ORG.UK

Director Tommy Wiseau Cast Tommy Wiseau, Juliette Danielle, Greg Sestero
Director Steven Spielberg Cast Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Shaw
USA 2003, 1h39m
I don’t think there’s any words to describe it... Possibly one of the most unique movie-going experiences of my life. Charlie Brooker After repeated requests, GFT is proud to present the Glasgow premiere of The Room, which has been dubbed “the Citizen Kane of bad movies”. Written, directed, produced and starring the now legendary Tommy Wiseau as the unlucky Jonny who is being TORN APART by his unfaithful fiancee Lisa. Riddled with glaring plot holes, bonkers performances and some atrocious cinematography, The Room has become a cinematic comedy phenomenon. We’ll be handing out an audience participation guide on the night so you can fully understand this truly special film.

GFT pays tribute to the summer blockbuster that transformed Steven Spielberg’s career and Hollywood itself. When chewed human torsos wash upon the shore of a popular beach resort, a local cop struggles to convince local officials that a killer shark is behind the grizzly attacks. Aided by John William’s unforgettable score, Jaws is still terrifying all these years later. I queued four hours outside the ABC Kirkcaldy to see it back in the day and I’m still too scared to swim in the ocean! Allison Gardner, Head of Cinemas, GFT

80s DRESS UP!
DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN
15
Friday 13 August (10.45pm) Director Susan Seidelman Cast Madonna, Rosanna Arquette, Aidan Quinn USA 1985, 1h44m
Dress yourself up and get Into the Groove with Madonna as she shocks us all with her ability to act... Desperate housewife Roberta passes the time by following the exploits of party girl Susan through her regular personals ad. After a convenient case of amnesia, Roberta is mistaken for Susan and ends up pursued by shady gangsters throughout the downtown clubs of NYC. A farcical feminist comedy that remains beloved by generations of wannabes 25 years later. So pull out your neon leg warmers, fix your wet perm or don your conical bras in honour of 80s icon Madonna for a late night dress up. The best-dressed boy and girl will win a prize on the night!

Friday 27 August (10.45pm) Director Joel Coen Cast Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi USA 1998, 1h58m
“Sometimes there’s a man… I won’t say a hero, ’cause what’s a hero? Sometimes, there’s a man. And I’m talkin’ about The Dude here, The Dude from Los Angeles. Sometimes, there’s a man… well… he’s the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that’s The Dude. The Dude from Los Angeles.” The cult of The Dude abides all these years later in the Coen Brothers’ most quotable and daft film. Jeff Bridges plays Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski, a hippie burnout, bowling enthusiast and accidental detective on the trail of gangsters who urinated on his precious rug (it really tied the room together). Featuring some hilarious turns by Julianne Moore as a “strongly vaginal” artist and John Goodman, The Dude’s intimidating best friend. Quotes from The Big Lebowski have become a form of cultural currency second only to The Simpsons; for modern cult-movie fans looking for fellow travellers, they’re the closest thing to a Vulcan hand-sign we have. THE FIRST MOVIE N/C 12+ Wednesday 4 August (8.30) Director Mark Cousins UK/Iraq 2009, 1h26m, subtitles
Northern Irish cineaste Mark Cousins is a passionate advocate of the power of film to transform our understanding of the world. In The First Movie he visits a small village in the Kurdish north of Iraq armed only with a projector, a selection of great movies and three small cameras to allow the village children to express their imaginations. The result is a film about war and its human casualties but also an uplifting account of how innocence survives and beauty endures.
GREGORY’S GIRL 15 Tuesday 10 (12.45) & Wednesday 11 August (6.00) Director Bill Forsyth Cast John Gordon Sinclair, Dee Hepburn, Clare Grogan Scotland 1981, 1h31m
BAFTA-winning Gregory’s Girl is probably the most beloved Scottish film ever made. Writer-director Bill Forsyth beautifully portrays the awkwardness and cock-eyed optimism of adolescence in a film that captures school life like no other. John Gordon Sinclair is the gangly teenager besotted with the new star player in the school football team but fate has other plans in store for his romantic longings. Bella Bella.
BURNING: MOGWAI N/C 15+ Wednesday 25 August (9.00) Directors Vincent Moon Nathanael Le Scouarnec UK 2009, 48m
Glasgow based musicians Mogwai present a black and white concert film, capturing their unique layered rock sound. Shot over three nights in Brooklyn, the imagery of the film is artistic and beautiful. Band members are almost motionless as the soft melody gives in to the cacophony of distortion and raw emotion the band are famed for. Screening with GFF10 Short Film Festival inaugural Best Short Film Award winner, Joanna Wagner’s Peter in Radioland (10 mins).
