New opening hours
We start building Cinema 3 on Monday 13 May, from that date GFT will open Monday – Thursday from 5pm, half an hour before the first film starts on Friday and all day on Saturday and Sunday. During the building period, refreshments and snacks will be available from the Balcony Bar.

The Look of Love invites you to enter the plush velvet world of Paul Raymond, the notorious porn baron and property tycoon who became known as the ‘King of Soho’. Michael Winterbottom's stylish, energetic biography follows Raymond from the opening of his first ‘gentleman's club’ in 1958 to his astonishing rise as the owner of many clubs and top shelf magazines. Vast wealth doesn't necessarily bring happiness as Raymond fights the hypocrisy of British sexual mores and his own tragic failings. Steve Coogan gives one of his best performances in a film that cleverly reflects its times through a changing aesthetic and a killer soundtrack.

Rebellion L'ordre et la morale Friday 26 – Monday 29 April In this gritty thriller, set in the tropical landscapes of the New Caledonia jungle, a principled police negotiator becomes caught up in the territory’s struggle for emancipation. When rebels kill four gendarmes and take thirty hostages, Captain Philippe Legorjus travels to the French Melanesian territory in the South Pacific to restore order. The Gatekeepers Friday 3 – Tuesday 7 May Director Dror Moreh has achieved a real coup in The Gatekeepers, persuading six former leaders of the Israeli secret service agency Shin Bet to speak on camera for the first time. They provide a unique perspective on the IsraeliPalestinian conflict over the past fifty years, revealing what they were prepared to do to protect their country and the moral and ethical dilemmas that confronted them. One of the years most important and compelling documentaries, it is reminiscent of The Fog of War in the confessional intimacy of its testimony and the valuable insights it provides. A Hijacking Kapringen Friday 10 – Thursday 23 May (except Tuesday 21 May) The sweaty, claustrophobic reality of being held captive at sea is captured with an unusual level of authenticity in this riveting Danish thriller. In the middle of the Indian Ocean, a Danish freighter is captured by Somali pirates. They demand an enormous ransom for the safe return of the ship and crew. The flinty, ice-cool head of the shipping company assumes responsibility for the negotiations and refuses to give in to their demands. As weeks of stalemate pass, the crew begin to fear for their lives and surrender to despair in a tense, simmering drama with all the nail-biting immediacy of a news bulletin.
White Elephant Elefante blanco Friday 10 – Sunday 12 May Villa Maria is a notorious Buenos Aires shanty town in the grip of ruthless drug barons and corrupt cops. Dedicated priest Julian (Ricardo Darin) fights an uphill battle to bring food, medicine and education to the community. He has set his heart on saving the 'white elephant', a derelict building once intended as Latin America's largest hospital. He is joined by Father Nicolas (Jeremie Renier), the sole survivor of a military massacre in the Amazon. Nicolas has already begun to question his faith before being confronted by the violence and injustice in Villa Maria. The two priests face an impossible situation in a gripping tale of a fight for the soul of a city.

The events of May 1968 are a defining moment in 20th century French identity. Olivier Assayas’ semiautobiographical drama is a love letter to the legacy and possibilities of the period. Set in 1971, it follows teenager Gilles as he tries to balance political idealism, artistic ambition and a hunger for love. He finds a soulmate in fellow idealist Christine. When unrest returns to the streets of Paris, they spend an endless summer at an Italian villa in a giddy atmosphere of intellectual curiosity, chaotic parties and romantic longing. An impeccable evocation of the music and moods of the 1970s lends added allure to one of Assayas’ most personal projects.

The Stoker Kochegar Friday 24 – Sunday 26 May Set in the mid 1990s outside St. Petersburg, The Stoker tells the story of Major Skryabin, a shell-shocked veteran of the Afghan-Soviet War, who works as a stoker. Mad Men meets The Artist in Populaire, a superbly crafted, finely acted debut feature from writer-director Régis Roinsard, which opened Glasgow Film Festival this February. A retro rom-com set in 1958, Normandy, it tells the tale of a young French secretary who, with the help of her highly persuasive boss, hammers her way to becoming one of the fastest typists on the planet. This Gallic charmer boasts immaculate 1950s styling, is loaded with vintage Hollywood references and stars the mightily appealing Romain Duris and Déborah François.
The final film from the late Claude Miller is an elegant adaptation of the François Mauriac novel set in aplayer painterly vision of the pine-forests of southwest France. Audrey Tautou stars as Thérèse, a young woman who marries wealthy landowner Bernard (Gilles Lellouche). More interested in his dogs and the local hunt than their marriage, she is soon reconciled to a loveless but privileged existence. However, when Bernard’s sister, Anne, falls passionately in love with a dashing young Portuguese man, Thérèse cannot help but compare their relationship with her own and begins to think about how to escape her stifling existence.

After completing filming on 2012’s biggest blockbuster, Avengers Assemble, Joss Whedon turned his attention to this passion project, shooting it in his own home in only twelve days with many of the stars of his previous movies and TV shows. The result is a sparkling retelling of the Shakespeare comedy that retains the Bard’s dialogue but updates it to a modern day setting, as two couples debate their respective feelings on love and marriage. This is a 400-year-old rom-com that’s just as witty and relevant today.
One of the great movie romances of the modern era achieves its richest and fullest expression in Before Midnight. If 1994's Before Sunrise was a touching paean to possibility and 2004's Before Sunset a piercing ode to regret, then Before Midnight encompasses all these feelings and more within a fullbodied portrait of a devoted couple facing early middle-age. When the possibility arises that rains have washed the atmosphere clean in the Northern hemisphere, a submarine commander (Gregory Peck) and his men head to San Diego, where faint radio signals have been emanating. By using the voices and memories of the time, Loach hopes to illuminate and celebrate a period of unprecedented community spirit in the UK, the impact of which has endured for many years and which may yet be rediscovered today.
The General Strike of 1926 was a defining moment for a generation fighting to secure decent wages and conditions. The Happy Lands charts the impact on mining families in Fife as they defy the ‘austerity cuts’ of an intransigent management with their slogan ‘not a penny off the pay, not a minute on the day’. Their defiance is measured in hardship, hunger and suffering. Developed from true stories and featuring a largely non-professional cast, the film is a heartfelt reminder of Scotland's industrial past and the legacy of trade union solidarity. Archive footage and the testimony of family members enhances this ambitious drama/documentary.

An experiment in cinéma-vérite, Chronicle of a Summer is a groundbreaking documentary from sociologist Edgar Morin and filmmakeranthropologist Jean Rouch. Filmed over the course of the summer of 1960, Parisian residents were approached with the provocative question ‘Are you happy?’. Their answers reveal the hopes and dreams of a variety of people; from artists to factory workers, from an Italian émigré to an African student, and cover political issues such as the ongoing Algerian War and the Holocaust, as well as calling the very authenticity of nonfiction film into question.

Something vital has been sacrificed in the rush towards industrial-scale farming, which makes The Moo Man such a timely, beguiling documentary. Filmmakers Andy Heathcote and Heike Bachelier have followed Stephen Hook through the changing seasons and challenges of running a small organic farm. As Hook struggles with a long and difficult birth or attempts to sell his ‘raw’ milk, we realise that something precious will be lost if we allow the destruction of this fast-disappearing way of life. A charming and touching film that was one of the discoveries of this year's Sundance Film Festival.
If you had been forced to leave your home, how would you respond to the filmmaker who wants to capture your story? If you were that filmmaker, how would you begin that process? Filmmakers, community workers and participants come together to unpack the work and discuss the journey. The event features contributions from photographer and filmmaker Chris Leslie (creator of a recent film for Scottish Refugee Council and Refugee Survival Trust’s Stop Destitution campaign) and Media Co-op and Refugee Survival Trust’s 'Making It Home' project which developed films from poetry by writers including Jackie Kay, Ruth Padel and Edwin Morgan.

As a small child growing up on the Suffolk coast, Thomas Dolby fell asleep to the rhythmic flash of the rotating beam from a distant lighthouse. Later this year, that lighthouse – on the tip of the mysterious island of Orford Ness, formerly an MOD testing zone for experimental weapons – will be decommissioned and abandoned to the sea. Disturbed by the imminent deletion of this powerful childhood memory, Thomas planned a clandestine solo commando raid on the island in his RIB, and filmed unusual footage with a quadrocopter camera as he spent a few last hours alone with the lighthouse. GFT – a legacy for life GFT took part in the Arts & Business Scotland 'Love the arts, Leave to the arts' pilot campaign this February, which promoted Legacy Giving to the Arts in Scotland. Many of our audience members tell us what GFT means to them; it’s not just a cinema, it’s a cherished part of their lives. Going to GFT – and to its predecessor The Cosmo – is passed down from generation to generation as patrons introduce their families and friends to the cinema.
