Sunday 10 October (4.00), 1h20m
Directors Kerthy Fix, Gail O’Hara
From the early films of Bill Forsyth through to her own work as producer on key films like Silent Scream, Paddy Higson has a fair claim to the title of mother of the Scottish film industry. A phenomenal encourager of talent, she also established Black Cat studios in the Parkhead area of Glasgow and produced top TV drama in Scotland for decades. A UWS: SPA celebration of a true pioneer.
USA 2009, 1h25m
This informal illustrated interview will be hosted by David Bruce, Chair of the UWS/Scottish Production Archive. Presented in association with University of the West of Scotland/Scottish Production Archive
Ten years in the making, Strange Powers is an intimate documentary portrait of songwriter Stephin Merritt and his band the Magnetic Fields. With his unique gift for memorable melodies, lovelorn lyrics and wry musical stylings that blend classic Tin Pan Alley with modern sounds, Stephin Merritt has distinguished himself as one of contemporary pop’s most beloved and influential artists. Presented in association with Bottle Rocket

ENTER THE VOID 12A
Friday 1 – Thursday 7 October
Director Gaspar Noé
Director Corneliu Porumboiu Cast Dragos Bucur, Vlad Ivanov, Irina Saulescu
France/Germany/Italy 2010, 2h15m, some subtitles
Romania 2010, 1h54m, subtitles
Gaspar Noé returns to divide audiences all over again with his first feature since the highly controversial Irreversible. Described as a ‘psychedelic melodrama’, Enter the Void centres on estranged siblings, Oscar and Linda, who are reunited in Japan. When Oscar is killed in a police raid, his spirit lingers on to protect his sister after promising to never leave her. His journey will take him to nightmarish places in an amazing experiment in hallucinatory cinema – the opening credits alone are dazzling. Don’t miss one of the most hotly debated films in years.
Tasked with pursuing a schoolboy suspected of supplying marijuana, a young policeman becomes troubled by the clash between duty and instinct. The struggle he undertakes with his conscience and his superiors provides an intriguing, philosophical allegory; but most delightfully, it’s played with warmth and humour, and an extraordinary investment in the detail of its characters’ lives. Already a multiple prize-winner, this is one of the finest European films of recent years. THE LEOPARD Il Gattopard
PG
Friday 1 – Monday 4 October Director Luchino Visconti / Cast Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale Italy 1963, 3h7m, some subtitles
There are films so richly realised you can live in them: The Leopard is one such – and this new digital restoration, recently premiered in Cannes, makes the experience yet more intense. Like a 19th-century novel (say, War and Peace or Middlemarch), combining magisterial sweep with density of detail, it tells of momentous historical events – here the unification of Italy – through how those events are lived by representative individuals, in this case an ageing aristocrat confronting an on-the-make bourgeoisie. Stately cinematography and meticulously and gorgeously recreated costumes capture the look of Italian painting of the period. Nino Rota’s score sounds like a 19th-century symphony you happen never to have heard and his dances for the mesmerising final ballroom scene seamlessly incorporate one by Verdi. In short, if there had been cinema in the 19th century, this is what it would have been like. Richard Dyer

UK 2009, 1h18m
After the enormous success of Paris je t’aime it was only a matter of time before the whole process was repeated in another iconic city. New York, I Love You invites eleven international filmmakers to offer their vision of the Big Apple. Highlights include Julie Christie as a melancholy retired opera singer, Eli Wallach and Cloris Leachman as a bickering elderly couple, Natalie Portman’s tender tale of a divorced couple and the children trapped by their bitterness and Albert Hughes’s memorable evocation of a passionate one night stand.
Fresh from a rapturous reception at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, this is the story of Alfred. At the age of 63, trailing behind him is a string of disastrous relationships: an estranged lover; a daughter; a granddaughter; and an illegitimate son. The only person who has not grown tired of his self-centred approach to life is his long-suffering pal, Brian. Alfred is planning to take Brian to Spain, but first there is the small matter of making everything ‘nicey-nicey’ before they hit the beach. Alfred’s well-meaning but ultimately ridiculous attempts to set the record straight are charming, touching and often hilarious.
The screening on Friday 8 October (1.30) will be introduced by Dr Jonny Murray. The screening on Wednesday 13 October (6.10) will be introduced by Dr Christopher Gow. Programme notes are available in the cinema and online at www.gft.org.uk/notes

A TOWN CALLED PANIC PANIQUE AU VILLAGE
PG
Friday 8 – Thursday 14 October Directors Stéphane Aubier, Vincent Patar / Cast Stéphane Aubier, Bruce Ellison Belgium/Luxembourg/France 2009, 1h15m, subtitles
Based on the hit Belgian TV show, A Town Called Panic is hilariously and frequently surreal, starring three plastic toys that can’t stay out of trouble. When Cowboy and Indian accidentally purchase 50 million bricks for Horse’s new barbecue, their misfortune sets off a wacky chain of events that takes them to the centre of the earth, across frozen tundra and into parallel universes under the sea. Imagine Monty Python animating Lego bricks on acid and you might come close to understanding this Gallic genius. Screening with short film Battenberg (11m) written and directed by Stewart Comrie. RESTREPO
CTBC
Friday 15 – Monday 18 October Directors Tim Hetherington, Sebastian Junger USA 2010, 1h33m
Restrepo chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers based at a remote Afghan outpost, considered one of the most dangerous postings in the U.S. military. Unprecedented access allows audiences to experience being in combat with soldiers, as the cameras never leave their side. There are no interviews with generals or apologetic diplomats and the distinct lack of moral or political analysis means that it’s a completely unflinching examination of modern warfare. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize Documentary 2010, Sundance Film Festival
PIANOMANIA
OVER YOUR CITIES GRASS WILL GROW Director Sophie Fiennes UK/The Netherlands 2010, 1h45m
Sophie Fiennes’s roaming and almost wordless film documents the artist Anselm Kiefer and the dramatic landscapes he constructed in Barjac, southern France. The monuments, built to house paintings and installations, are visually astonishing, and Kiefer’s dedication to his ‘personal universe’ is highly physical. A fascinating portrait and a compelling study of art.

Directors Laura Gabbart, Justin Schein Cast Colin Beavan, Michelle Conlin
Director Flora Sigismondi Cast Dakota Fanning, Kristen Stewart
USA 2009, 1h33m
USA 2010, 1h46m
Sick of hearing himself complain about the world he lives in without doing anything about it, Colin Beavan embarks on a year-long project in which he abandons his high consumption Fifth Avenue lifestyle in an effort to make sustainable zero impact on the environment. Dragging his wife and two-year-old daughter into the experiment, the family live without motorised transport, takeaways and the internet. Proof that ‘eco’ and ‘entertainment’ aren’t mutually exclusive.
Based on Cherie Currie’s Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway, Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning star as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie in this music-fuelled coming of age story of the first girls to ever dominate the patriarchal world of rock: The Runaways. The film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival 2010, charts their speedy rise to stardom, with their tough-girl image masking the girls’ own personal demons and bitter infighting. A must-see for music fans.
Terrifically entertaining. Compelling and extremely funny. Los Angeles Times
THE ARBOR

Friday 22 – Thursday 28 October Director Clio Barnard Cast Manjinder Virk, Christine Bottomley, Monica Dolan, Neil Dudgeon UK 2010, 1h30m
Playwright Andrea Dunbar (author of Rita, Sue and Bob Too) led a troubled life until her early death at the age of twenty-nine. The Arbor innovatively represents Dunbar’s life, in particular her relationship with her children, by having actors flawlessly lip-synch to stories told by the real-life protagonists who knew her. Barnard’s integration of fact and fiction is inventive and seamless, and though the impact is shattering, it is filled with compassion. London Film Festival 2010 BUY TICKETS ONLINE WWW.GFT.ORG.UK

Friday 22 – Thursday 28 October Director Olivier Assayas Cast Édgar Ramírez, Alexander Scheer, Juana Acosta France/Germany 2010, 2h46m, subtitles
Eagerly anticipated portrait of extraordinary Venezuelan revolutionary Ilich Ramirez Sanchez (aka ‘Carlos the Jackal’) who was for years on the most-wanted list for international terrorism and is currently serving a life sentence in France. The story traverses Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America and is told with suspense and clarity in equal measure. Conceived for television, the film is nonetheless notable for its cinematic production values and sophisticated, gripping performances. The screening on Friday 22 October (1.30) will be introduced by Dr Jonny Murray. The screening on Wednesday 27 October (7.30) will be introduced by Dr Christopher Gow. THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
THE WILDEST DREAM PG Friday 22 – Wednesday 27 October Director Anthony Geffen Narrator Liam Neeson USA 2010, 1h33m
This fascinating documentary explores the enduring mysteries surrounding the death of British mountaineer George Mallory and fellow climber Andrew Sandy Irvine on Mount Everest in 1924. American mountaineer Conrad Anker, who discovered Mallory’s body in 1999, retraces his journey in the company of British climber Leo Houlding in an attempt to answer some of the questions surrounding Mallory’s demise. Tense and entirely captivating.

Friday 29 October – Thursday 11 November Director Lisa Cholodenko / Cast Julianne Moore, Annette Bening, Mark Ruffalo USA 2010, 1h44m
Simply put, this whip-smart comedy drama about modern family life is one of the most enjoyable films of the year. Long-term couple Nic (Annette Bening) and Jules ( Julianne Moore) are the parents of teenagers Joni and Laser, both conceived with the help of an anonymous sperm donor. Before Joni leaves home to start college, she and her brother contact their biological father, and so Paul (Mark Ruffalo) enters the family’s life and is soon causing ripples in the family set-up. The Kids Are All Right is cleverly peppered with laughs in its examination of the ‘modern’ family. Screen International

Ex-con Ali works as a nightwatchman to support his wife and young daughter. Returning home to find them both missing, his life is shattered, and the relentless pursuit of retribution becomes his final obsession. As director and actor, Pitts’s work is outstanding. Revolving around his own magnetic central performance, The Hunter is a powerful thriller that lingers in the mind long after the last gunshot rings out. EIFF 2010
Filmed at considerable personal risk to the cast and crew, Kandahar Break is a nail-biting drama set in the Afghanistan of the late 1990s. Richard is a British engineer under contract to clear the landmines that pepper the country. His task is to remain an objective professional, regardless of the increasingly intolerable conditions under the Taliban. His situation becomes impossible as his love for a local woman puts him at odds with the regime and places them both in grave danger. An engrossing, tautly handled personal tale from the front line of a country in permanent conflict. GFF10

UK 2010, 1h30m
Filmed over a year, with unprecedented access, Matt Pinder’s film follows three troubled Glasgow school children as their lives are completely transformed by the dedicated nurturing of their teachers. The Nurture Room is a bridge between home and school, a safe place where children can revisit early ‘nurturing’ experiences that they missed or didn’t get at home. This moving and impassioned documentary shows how the development of special classrooms is helping previously overlooked children to thrive and is essential viewing for parents and teachers alike. There will be an introduction by Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council and director Matt Pinder will take part in a Q&A after the screening.

When she reaches school age and her mother decides to send her away from London to a special school in Manchester, Mandy’s family begins to show signs of strain. The screening will be preceded by an extended introduction from Dr Karen Lury who will discuss the film in the context of her new book The Child in Film: Tears, Fears and Fairy Tales which is published by I.B. Tuesday 12 (12.45) & Wednesday 13 October (7.00) Director Alberto Cavalcanti Cast Leslie Banks, Thora Hird, Valerie Taylor UK 1942, 1h33m
Cavalcanti’s wartime film, based on a story by Graham Greene, still unsettles, even shocks, with its subversive, almost surreal spectacle of a cosy English village under Nazi attack in the Second World War. Disguised as British soldiers, the invading Germans insinuate themselves into a pretty village inhabited by British character players so familiar to wartime audiences that they must have seemed like family members. Always the mischievous foreign observer, Cavalcanti kicks away their usual charm, letting them kill and be killed in a violent battle for their green, pleasant land. Critics’ reactions at the time were mixed; but now we can properly relish this visionary film, as jolting and quizzical about British life as anything by Powell and Pressburger. Geoff Brown
